Book Description

The far north was once a land feared by many, traveled by few. Now it's the kind of place people travel hundreds of miles to visit. This quiet sanctuary of quiet rivers and lakes that come in all shades of blue and green, is also home to some of the most unusual wildlife in the Americas - caribou, bison, whales, musk oxen.

This is the most detailed guide to traveling the Alaska Highway, a road that is a feat of engineering in itself. The authors detail all the major towns along the way from British Columbia through the Yukon to Alaska and Prudhoe Bay, including Fairbanks, Anchorage, Dawson City, Skagway, and more. You'll also find information on sidetrips along alternate highways: the Top-of-the-World, the Haines, the Stewart-Cassiar, the South Klondike, the Richardson and the Glen. A one-stop resource for Alaska-bound travelers, this book has over 30 maps and color photos.

5 out of 5 stars *The* book to bring.......2005-03-20

I recently rode my motorcycle up the Alaska Highway and space was pretty limited. I photocopied pages out of various other books, but brought this one along intact.

It stayed in my tankbag every day, was brought out at every meal, and was pored over in hotel rooms at night. I'm also a writer, and my Adventure Guide to the Alaska Highway became my de facto notebook on the trip -- post-it notes of every color peek out from its pages; notes line the margins.

There are a finite number of places to stop along the Alaska Highway; most guidebooks will give you pretty much all of them. What makes this one different is its tone. The authors obvious enjoy both the road and writing about it. Personal anecdotes are lightly sprinkled into the text, giving the impression that yes, the authors know what they're talking about. I learned little bits of history about the areas I rode through; not so much that it weighed down the book, but just enough to pique my interest and send me scampering to the library once I got back.

Also, the book is laid out very well. The font is easy on the eyes; bold section headers made it easy to find what I was looking for, even while balancing the book on my tankbag after pulling to the side of some gravelly road in the middle of nowhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide to The Alcan and Beyond........1999-09-03

While the Milepost will give you every pullout and scenic view on the highway, this book is great reading about what to do, and what to see on your way. The information is very accurate and intresting. In this book, when you look up a certain place you end up reading on and on.

5 out of 5 stars Great travelling companion.......1999-06-09

I took this book with the AAA guidebook on my trip to Alaska, read the AAA intro on the plane there and read only this book for the rest of the trip. We traveled more than 2,000 miles on the Alaska Highway. This book has been a great companion and guide book wherever we go. I even did some more reading on the plane back home because the writing was interesting. It may be partly because Alaska is such an interesting subject; but the book is definitely fun to read.

2 out of 5 stars Bonnie and Clyde.......2007-05-28

Not as great as I was hoping it would be. Have read better written books on the couple and I have read most of them available.

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Bonnie and Clyde.......2007-05-16

This is my first book on these two and it will not be my last. There is a good bibliography provided to follow up sources of information and other books. As well as being a history book the author delves frequently into his reflections about what made Bonnie and Clyde tick. The author seems determine to provide psychological profiles at regular intervals throughout the book to explain Bonnie and Clyde's actions and decisions and almost tries to get inside their minds. At times l thought why does he bother at others l thought he made some interesting comments. Mr Treherne does a good job of explaining how the folklore of these two developed over the years and endures to this day. Even here in Australia a lot of people know about Bonnie and Clyde, though mainly through the Faye Dunaway movie.

He covers their childhood and family life very well and provides plenty of details of the harsh, poor economic times they lived through and the circumstances of their late teens that led to their fateful meeting which developed into an enduring bond and progression into a life of crime that spiraled into senseless violence and devastation of so many lives. Sometimes there is too much psychological speculation and not enough history as the book seems to skim the surface in some areas and could have dug deeper into the history of Bonnie and Clyde, but the photos and newspaper headlines of the time are great. This book is worth a look!

4 out of 5 stars amateurs on the run.......2006-12-31

It is great to read how Bonnie and Clyde were able to escape from the law over and over again untill they were gunned down in 1934. They were nothing more than two amateurs who were incredibly lucky.

In the 1967 film there is a scene where they try to rob a bank, discovering that it closed three weeks earlier. Up to now I didn't realize that this actually happened, which shows how well prepared they were commiting these bank robberies. Although the film is pretty accurate, this book gives us more information about the famous couple. It shows how they became legends in American crime history, and became even more famous after their death.

True crime lovers should read this book, because although they were amateurs, they are probably still the most famous couple in the world.

4 out of 5 stars BONNIE AND CLYDE.......2004-02-27

WELLL THE BOOK I READ ABOUT WAS SO COOL AND INTRESTING.EVENTHOUGH I ONLY READ A FEW PAGES .I GOT A FEW CAPTATIONS OF THE BOOK ...BASICALLY THE BOOK WAS ABOUT,HOW IN THE LATES 1930'S TWO TO LIVE THEIR ROMANCE BY MAKING CRIMES...THE CHARACTERS OF THIS BOOK WERE BONNIE PARKER AND CLYDE BARROW..WHO WHERE A YOUNG SOCIOPATHIC SOUTHERN COUPLS GUNNED DOWN BY AUTHORITIES AFTER TWO YEARS OF CMMITING CRIME, WHO LEFTED 12 PEOPLE DEAD.THE BOOK WAS ALSO INTRESTING BECAUSE I WAS ABLE IMAGING AND PICTURE MANY OF THE READING THAT I WAS MAKING ....I WOULD RECOMMENED TO READERS WHO LIKE TO READ ABOUT CRIME, TO READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT S VERY MYSTIRIOUS AND FUN. THE AUTHOR TELLS THE WHOLE UNEDIFYING STORY FROM WRETCHED CHILDHOOD TO WRECTCH DEATH, BLOODY FAME AND WITH CLARITY, LEVEL HEADEDNESS AND WITH ECONOMY.

3 out of 5 stars Strange...But Less Than a History.......2001-07-12

This is one of those books I rated much more highly when I first read it years ago. It's a "strange history" indeed. It's not always a "straight" history, anyway, dwelling more on psychological speculations about the personalities of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker and on the growth of their legend (with comparisons to older historical and/or folkloric figures such as Jesse James, Robin Hood and even King Arthur) than on a straight recounting of the facts. Movie buffs will be fascinated with the many motion picture adaptations of the Bonnie and Clyde story and that is an interesting segment which Treherne rightly confined, for the most part, to the appendices. He did leave out the 1949 film They Live By Night (Farley Granger and Cathy O'Donnell as Clyde & Bonnie clones) and its 1970's remake Thieves Like Us (Keith Carradine and Shelley Duvall) but until Treherne's book I was completely unaware of either the 1939 film Persons in Hiding (one of four bearing this title and based in equal parts on both Bonnie and Clyde and Kathryn and George "Machine Gun" Kelly) or of the 1983 Italian comedy version. But, judging from the title, this book was supposed to be a biography of Clyde and Bonnie and a history of their criminal career. So it is, but little is to found in the historical narrative that is new. Most of it derives from previously published sources such as Jan Fortune's Fugitives and Lee Simmons' Assignment Huntsville, the former an error-ridden work based in equal parts on the recollections of Bonnie's mother and Clyde's sister and (uncredited) on a series of 1934 True Detective articles by Joplin Chief of Detectives Ed Portley, the latter valuable mainly for Simmons' recollections of the Eastham prison break and his recruitment of Frank Hamer and for the statements of gang member Joe Palmer. The confession of W.D. Jones is cited in the bibliography but Treherne seems to have read very little of it. The confession would have made a wonderful appendix, by the way, possibly with comparisons to Jones' 1968 Playboy article, of which Treherne seems completely unaware. Not that Treherne didn't do original research. The chapters on the Stringtown, OK shooting and the Platte City, MO gun battle are based largely on interviews and seem to be accurate accounts. It's a pity he didn't cover the other sites this way. Treherne apparently got no closer to Dexter, IA, the gang's Waterloo, than Des Moines, and missed a lot there. He missed out also on Okabena, MN, the site of a bank robbery Treherne, like previous and later authors, attributed, probably erroneously, to the Barrow gang, and the death site in Louisiana. Details of the final ambush seem to come mainly from the transcripts of Henry Methvin's Oklahoma murder trials and the flawed Ambush account--the ghosted memoirs of Ted Hinton. There is no evidence Treherne ever went near the death site in Bienville Parish. Still, the whole book is an enjoyable read and Treherne wisely used less commonly seen photos than the dozen or so Bonnie and Clyde pix seen in most books on the infamous duo. It is an admirable and worthwhile book. One only wishes it was the straight historical record the title implies. One cannot pschoanylize the dead and the best authorities for the love life of Bonnie and Clyde--whatever the details and whatever dubious historical significance that may entail--died with them. And the growth of the Bonnie and Clyde legend is more suited to a study of folklore than a straight biography.

I've recently discovered Heidi Boyd's bead books. I love her ideas and instructions. They aren't "way out there" but are original, simple designs and the instructions are very visual and easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars beading book.......2007-05-15

The book was just as advertised. Projects I feel capable of doing as a beginning beader.

1 out of 5 stars Only for beginners.......2007-04-24

If this is your first beading book you might find useful information here. If you've been beading for some time this book offers nothing, the projects are way too simple, more for kids than adults. It feels that the author is only starting with beading herself, she has not learned enough to teach others. There are so much better beading books out there, don't waste your money on this.

4 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful Beading.......2007-04-02

Good book with great projects to try. Good for beginners or anyone starting to learn the great hobby of jewerly making.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner.......2006-12-08

This book is good for a beginner. However, I did not find it as useful as I'd hoped... I wish there was more discussion about the different types of wire and thread, and how and when and for which types of projects to use them, since this is such a big part of beading. However, she did a good job of explaining how to use a crimp bead and how to make an earring loop, also important. But she mostly offers information overload without really clarifying HOW to use the different materials and findings, which can be overwhelming at first. I suppose if you work through the many projects in the book, these details would become more clear. However, I really didn't care for most of the projects in this book. Fortunately, given all the varieties of beads and findings, the sky's the limit... no need for someone else's recipe.

This is a comprehensive book on house plant care. This answers almost every question you may have on how to care for your plant. There is a great section on pests and diseases and the photos are helpful in letting you spot what the problem is with your plant. The gallery of houseplants also tells you how much light, water, humidity and temperature each plant needs as well as grooming, fertilization, propagation info and problems you may encounter with each plant. There's a table listing the lighting requirement for various houseplants so you can plan where to put your next purchase and there is also a small section on decorating with your plants. This guide is very easy to use and I highly recommend it as a great resource for anyone interested in having beautiful houseplants.

2 out of 5 stars So dated that disappointing.......2007-09-11

Let me start by saying, I wish that I had read the reviews on Amazon before picking up this book at a store. There are two major problems with this book.

First, it is extremely dated. The world in the early 70's is not what it is now. The issues faced by our children, ranging from AIDS to the technology with which they interact, to terrorism, are drastically different.

Second, and perhaps even more importantly, the authors used what I consider to be questionable methodology for writing the book. It is based almost entirely on interviews and surveys of parents and children. It then comes up with global conclusions ("Your ten-year-old will feel . . . ") based on the responses they received. Even if this were a reasonable method of telling me what my 10-year-old will be like -- which I doubt -- the fact that it is based on very old data renders it pretty much meaningless in 2007.

Furthermore, I am not sure how you "distill" all children into such formulaic conclusions. They do distinguish that "X% said this and Y% said that" in some categories, but this means nothing 30 years later. More of it tells you how clean "your 10" will be, how s/he will perceive parents, etc., lumping everyone together. Not realistic.

So, if you are seeking a relevant, timely, resource regarding pre-teen development and expectations, this is not it. If you want a survey on how parents and tweens perceived things 30 years ago, then that is fine.

The book has very valuable information that is timeless so it does not seem dated. THere is limited information which is repeated over and over in different sections so decide how you want to approach the info - eg: by age, by topic, by environment and read that section of the book. All other sections use the same data and provide the same information.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Information.......2006-04-22

I truly wish I had know about these books a few years ago when my oldest daughter entered puberty. It would have saved us both lots of grief! Although some things change (like style of clothing) or are new (like computers), the basic aspects of child development don't change. Reading this book gave me an idea of what my girls are experiencing at this point in their lives. Now I have an idea of what is normal and what is not and I can relax! This book is written in an older European style, but is also very frank and very "hip" in its own way. I plan on keeping mine and referring to it often as the years progress. Another "Oldie But Goodie"!

This book came recommended from our Elementary school counselor. I thought the book had very pertinent information for a parent entering unchartered territory with a pre-teen child. The book offers detailed info for each year so you need to put it in a safe place and reference back each year as a refresher. I think I will read this book again and again!

Habor and Ames, authors of the "Your Child" parenting guides, have an excellent reputation. Unfortunately they originally wrote these books in the 1950s and this one, at least, appears to have not been updated in the last thirty years.

I, like many parents, am seeking ways to understand my children and the changes they're facing at each new age. I purchased this book with high hopes, given the reputation of the authors, and am sorely disappointed at the very outdated, generation-specific information presented. Some information on human development never changes, of course, but the book doesn't stick with this timeless material. When it comes to emotional development, the children reviewed for this study (1950s through 1970s, if I understand it correctly) were simply not facing the same circumstances that children of our decade have to contend with. For example, "Boys ... may love bright plaid shirts or like to concentrante their new love of color and daring in a tie." Um, not any of the twelve-year old boys I know. Even the "good" ones want to wear black. Peer pressure.

Do not buy this book if you hope to gain insight into your children if they are at all engaged with the world as it is today. I've found the John Rosemond books, particularly "Teen Proofing", to be much more helpful.

Good luck on your parenting journey!

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully produced, very accessible portrait of the artist.......2000-08-30

This is a beautifully produced little book, full of excellent reproductions and elaborate pull-outs of Bacon's triptychs which give greater scope for appreciation than more conventional formats allow. Domino's text initially seems more simplistic than simple, discussing the artist's life, work, methods and themes very accessibly and predictably, but you end up with a clear sense of the art and its mechanics which might have been obscured in more technical books. It is as frustratingly ahistorical as Bacon's paintings though, and this book (as well as a recent visit to teh Dublin retrospective) tends to confirm my suspicions that Bacon was not as great as we all once thought. The book appends a section called 'Documents', full of reminiscences from acquaintances, and analyses by the likes of Gilles Deleuze.

4 out of 5 stars Compact but concise.......2000-06-29

Christophe Domino has managed to distill a body of work into a near pocket-sized edition, but with amamzing accuracy and attention to detail. As an admirer of Bacon's work and ideas, it is obvious that a book like this would not have been possible without the seminal work of writers David Sylvester and Michael Peppiatt respectively, but it is very well done none the less. From background information on the artist to one of the most suprising collection of photographic references available to date, the author does an outstanding job of doing with this book what most books twice this size struggle with. This book is highly recommended for anyone who is curious about the work of Francis Bacon, or simply as an amazing and concise review of facts for those who are already aware of the genius of the "greatest living (now deceased) painter".

This book will prove that Francis Bacon was the father of Freemasonry as we know it today and that Speculative Freemasonry had a Higher and More Noble Purpose than what is commonly Practiced Today. Bacon sought the reformation of man, society and the world. Freemasonry is the tool.

Book Description

In New Science, New World Denise Albanese examines the discursive interconnections between two practices that emerged in the seventeenth century—modern science and colonialism. Drawing on the discourse analysis of Foucault, the ideology-critique of Marxist cultural studies, and de Certeau’s assertion that the modern world produces itself through alterity, she argues that the beginnings of colonialism are intertwined in complex fashion with the ways in which the literary became the exotic “other” and undervalued opposite of the scientific.
Albanese reads the inaugurators of the scientific revolution against the canonical authors of early modern literature, discussing Galileo’s Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems and Bacon’s New Atlantis as well as Milton’s Paradise Lost and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. She examines how the newness or “novelty” of investigating nature is expressed through representations of the New World, including the native, the feminine, the body, and the heavens. “New” is therefore shown to be a double sign, referring both to the excitement associated with a knowledge oriented away from past practices, and to the oppression and domination typical of the colonialist enterprise. Exploring the connections between the New World and the New Science, and the simultaneously emerging patterns of thought and forms of writing characteristic of modernity, Albanese insists that science is at its inception a form of power-knowledge, and that the modern and postmodern division of “Two Cultures,” the literary and the scientific, has its antecedents in the early modern world.
New Science, New World makes an important contribution to feminist, new historicist, and cultural materialist debates about the extent to which the culture of seventeenth-century England is proto-modern. It will offer scholars and students from a wide range of fields a new critical model for historical practice.

5 out of 5 stars An Exciting, Thoughtful, Beautiful Play.......2002-09-28

There are two movie adaptations of "The Winslow Boy" available, recently starring Jeremy Northam (1999), and anciently starring Robert Donat (1948). But neither is an adequate substitute for the real thing, the full text by Terence Rattigan. In 1988, PBS broadcast a superb production of the full text, starring Ian Richardson and Emma Thompson, but it has not, unfortunately, been transferred to video.

The play concerns a public battle against the government, waged by a father to vindicate his son, expelled from a naval academy for cashing a stolen money order. Although the crusade is exciting, the play is most interesting in what it reveals about the people intimately involved: the members of the Winslow family, their close friends and their lawyer. The resulting insights and realism are among the story's chief virtues.

At first reading, the play may seem a straightforward tale of innocence versus injustice. But on closer inspection, one finds that the boy's innocence is never proved, and that some in the family deny or doubt it. Moreover, even if he is innocent, the harm to members of the family and to the country from pursuing the case might be greater than the harm from letting it drop. Such uncertainty is frustrating, but life is like that. Crusades are often launched for ends whose worth is unclear. The play is wise to develop this point.

Moreover, the actions and motives of crusaders may be a mixture of good and bad. This may make them harder to join, but certainly interesting and instructive to watch. One admires the boldness, determination and persistence of the father, Arthur Winslow, without whose initiative the crusade would not exist. Yet he is rather a sourpuss, often dominating or humiliating others. His daughter and indispensable lieutenant, Kate, is the most attractive member of the family, bright and realistic but emotionally withheld and often blinded by partisanship. Sir Robert Morton, the celebrated advocate who represents the Winslow boy is a supercilious, cold fish, and a brilliant (unscrupulous?) forensic champion. All three make substantial sacrifices for the sake of their crusade.

The author is a master of surprise and reversal. Much of the dramatic excitement comes when esteemed characters behave badly, or disregarded characters greatly please. Perhaps the most beautiful moment in the play is a marriage proposal to Kate by Desmond Curry, an old family friend whom she rather disdains (and the reader discounts). And the mother, Grace Winslow, whose views have been generally ignored, finally makes a powerful case that the crusade, out of pride and stubbornness, is destroying her husband and family for a son who is uninterested in the result.

Another excellence of the play is its treatment of controversy. On the questions as to whether the crusade is justified and worthwhile, for the family and for the country, the author impartially assigns plausible arguments to the various sides, from the characters, the newspapers they quote, or the proceedings they attend.

An outstanding play, with plenty of food for the intellect, the heart and the soul.

I enjoyed this play immensely and I also enjoyed the David Mamet film as well--a film that I thought was engrossing and a more than satisfying character study.

I liked how the play speaks of something that we sometimes give little regard to in today's society---the importance of and honor in a good and stable reputation. It was very enlightening to read this tale of a family (especially the father) who was in service of maintaining their son's dignity and place in society.

I was also taken by how this quest for honor taxes the family. My favorite scene in the play also begets my favorite line. The scene where the mother tells the father that he should let their son go on with his ife and not stigmatize him by this singular event is very honest and real. And when the mother says, "When he (their son) is grown, he won't thank you for it."-meaning the preservation of his reputation, I thought the whole idea and point of the story was driven home.

An excellent read indeed

I really love this play. A friend gave me a copy and I started reading it on the train and was unable to stop until I had finished reading it! I was able to envisage the characters in my mind and as soon as I finished it, I HAD to go out and rent the David Mamet film adaptation which is also fantastic.

Sir Robert, Catherine Winslow and Arthur Winslow are remarkably well-drawn characters and all of the dialogue in the play is excellent. I really enjoyed this play and highly recommend it!

It is based, substantially, on actual events. Try and see (if you haven't already) the David Mamet film adaption of the play which should be coming to video within a few months. It's a simply beautiful treatment. His most human work yet.
