RWG Dennis's British Ascomycetes is primarily a taxonomic treatise on fungi belonging to the Ascomycota commonly encountered from the British Isles and the European Continent. But it is far more than that. Many of the fungi are also common in North America as well. It is for this reason that I highly recomend the book to any student of mycology with an interest to learn more about these fascinating fungi. To fully appreciate this group of fungi the student will need to have access to a compound microsocpe to be used in cojunction with the book in order to properly deleniate their collections. These fungi can be found everywhere and their identification is a lifelong prusuit of immense gratification. RWG Dennis's text is probably the best single reference source for these fungi and can readily be used to identify many North American Ascomycetes, at least to genus.

This book is a wonderful guide to the Caribbean.........It covers everything any family would want to know when visiting the Caribbean. Several ideas presented in the book were helpful on our recent vacation. I have several of Ms Stapen's books and have found them all to be quite informative and worthwhile.!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty useless. Should more properly be titled "Great Family Resorts", as that is what it principly addresses. Has some information about seperate activities (at the resorts) for children, but very little pertaining to "family" vacations. Found information about locations with which I am familiar to be misleading or just plain wrong (ex., Calling Hilton Head Island "unspoiled" is about like saying that Manhattan is in its natural state as acquired from the Indians).

We have visited many of the facilities outlined in this book both before and after purchasing it. The reviews are very credible and the ideas are terrific. This really does focus on resorts where you can interact with your children. These people have really done their homework from Alaska to the East Coast and Hawaii based on our experience.

Floyd Hamilton, converted ganster........2003-04-06

Had the distinct pleasure of meeting and spending a couple hours with Floyd before his death. It is great to hear his voice again, reproduced on these tapes. He can give you an inside view of the police brutality prominent in the days of Bonnie & Clyde. The "rubber hose" method of questioning, and getting confessions.
According to Floyd, Clyde lived approximately where Texas Stadium sits today and once found guilty of minor crime as a teenager, met the rubber hose every time something happened in the vicinity.

Floyd's brother Raymond Hamilton, however was a considerably more violent and murderous criminal. Floyd joked that his mother was the only woman to ever have 2 sons on the FBI's most wanted list at the same time.

Sid Underwood has done a great job of telling the Ray Hamilton Story in "Desperation Desperado" The Chronicle of Raymond Hamilton. (ISBN# 0890159661) Ray was executed by the state at age 21. He and another death row inmate to be executed the same day, flipped a coin to see who met "Old Sparky" first!

insiders true story of life with Bonnie & Clyde.......1998-06-04

great listening for anyone into Bonnie & Clyde. Floyd Hamilton was there for many of the escapades and outlived Bonnie & Clyde to rob more banks. He served time in Alcatraz and was almost successful in escaping the island prison. He finally found God and straightened up his life. The added commentary & old radio audio is a little cheesy but Hamilton's narrative--to those familiar with the people and places he is talking about--is spellbinding.

This has got to be one of the best action and true life books I have ever read. The book grabs your attention since page one, and once you start you'll never stop reading. This book covers in great detail the missions of a group of british mercenaries through the war in the ex-Yugoslavia. The book takes you from recce operations behind enemy lines to a full scale attack on the Yugoslav Federal Army near Osijek. This book is a must for anyone trying to understand how and why mercenaries choose this type of work to make a living. Trust me, you'll never regret buying this book.

A sociological flora of hired men in combat........1999-07-14

The book takes you through an indepth account of the lives of these mercenaries. From sleeping in a rat-infested cellar, to surviving being captured by the enemy. The brutality of war in a devided nation can not be better expressed than in this book. The fact that the author collected the material for this book in combat with these men gives the reader a point of view rarely given by an author. The image of the heartless mercenary is shaken as their lives are forever altered in the events of this civil war. Boys seeking for adventure are teamed with hardened war veterans to form an explosive relationship of brutality and compassion.

The best all-action war story I have read for years.......1998-11-01

From page one the narrative never falters and with it the compulsion to keep the pages turning. Although harrowing, the story reveals how and why mercenaries think, operate and deal with events, often earning a pittance for the risks they are forced into taking.... Comparable with Michael Herr's 'Despatches' in my opinion.

This account of a team of merceneries lead by an ex British soldier is completely gripping. The action starts of page one and does not stop. Even in the highs and lows of war the author keeps your attention to a maximum. This is the type of book that can change your outlook on life. A Rambo like account with the true horrors of war left in. A truly graphic, explicit and horrific account of how vile humans can be towards one another. It is totally shocking that this can happen in Europe today. Read it....if you dare.

What a wonderfully inspiring selection of stories, where dogs get to tell their tales. Reminded me to a slightly similar tale of a remarkable Boston Terrier, titled Boomerang - A Miracle Trilogy, which is channeled by Boomerang. He is the co author, and is on a mission to spread love, and teach people the power of kindness. Two great companion books.

I love this book. It is so great for a beginner that has not done any paper piecing and great for anyone that has not done paper piecing by strips. The instructions are very clear; there are pictures to show "how to" for each step. THe patterns are clearly marked with strip cut sizes and even have arrows to show best direct to sew each strip. There are cutting instructions and multiple patterns. Would recommend this book to anyone wanting to know how to work with foundation/paper piecing.

EXCELLENT BOOK - BUT DR ZILBERGELD BADLY NEEDS TO DO AN UPDATE.......2006-07-16

I've just read The New Male Sexuality and I've got to say, I'm really impressed... It is so rare to find a self-help book FOR MEN (most of that genre is very female oriented) and Dr Zilbergeld is very male-positive...

I also liked how he discussed the socialization of little boys - how young males learn that they should supress their feelings - "boys don't cry" - and the doctor's theory that this is the cause of much misery for adult males...

I heartily agree with Zilbergeld's conclusions here...

I only have a few criticisms...

Dr Zilbergeld tends to have a sociobiological view of modern behavior - he tends to present cultural gender roles as if they are biologically determined... This tends to undermine his arguments about male socialization (and, due to the radical differences in gender behavior in different societies, this view is fundamentally incorrect)

Also, Dr Zilbergeld tends to assume that every male is in a long term monogomous relationship... This is far from true (hell, that's the reason that I brought this book in the first place) and it would be helpful if he focused more of his advice for guys like me who don't have a woman..

Finally, the biggest flaw...

Apparently, Zilbergeld originally wrote this book a long time ago (the copyright info says the first edition was published in 1992)... and it shows...

Women (especialy women my age and younger - I'm 38) have changed a whole hell of a lot...

When Zelbergeld did the surveys, apparently most women were still looking for love and didn't like sex for sex's sake, like men stereotypically do...

THIS IS NO LONGER THE CASE...

In my experience over the last decade or so, many women these days basically dislike men...

They need males because men, on average, make more money than women (but women have a higher cost of living) and, of course, most women want to have babies, and you can't do that without male DNA... other than cash and genetic material, they'd rather not be bothered with us...

Also, many modern women can be as crass, vulgar and unemotional about sex as only men used to be...

For instance, in the section on penis size, Dr Zilbergeld claims that "size doesn't matter" to most women and women are, supposedly, very understanding about males who are 'undersized'

I beg to differ...

In my experience, women are VERY much concerned about size... and you WILL get ridiculed if the woman you're with thinks you are inadequate in that department....

The same for performance issues - if you aren't up to the task, many women will get really mad and start insulting you (they might even accuse you of being gay)

Women aren't as nice as they used to be....

There probably wern't that many of these women out there when Dr Zilbergeld did his original surveys....

There most certainly are now (especially in places like Manhattan, where I live)...

It's not as simple as it used to be... and assuming that all women aspire to a deep emotional connection above all else can be a very dangerous thing to do...

Basically, I think that Dr Zilbergeld needs to do an updating of this otherwise excellent book (but with all new interviews of this new generation of women - who are VERY different than their mothers and grandmothers when it comes to sexuality)

Still, this is an excellent read and a must buy for men looking for serious relationship advice intended for a male audience...

This book is in tune with men, but not women........2006-02-22

This book deserves credit for addressing men's needs for good sex, but is hit and miss for women.

A quote from the book:
"We men have taken a lot of heat in recent years for our attitudes about sex. We are told that we are obsessed with sex, expecially sex without love and commitment; that we push too hard for it and in inapproporate ways in both new and old relationships; and that we pout when we don't get what we want. Such attitudes, we are told, are immature and maybe downritght sick. But I think the criticisms themselves are wrongheaded and destructive. Males can't help having their attitiudes, which are probably due at least as much to physiology as to learning. Sex, afterall is live affirming, and there's no point in feeling bad about that." End quote.

I believe that men have often hurt women (and their relationships with women) to fullfill their sexual urges, but author severely downplays this as if it were uncommon and less harmful than it actually is.

The author gives a role-playing example on how to deal with conflict:

But I can't guarantee never to do it. What feels rough to you comes from a strong feeling of lust. I'm not sure I can always catch this impluse before I grab you. I think I can do it most of the time. But there my still be a few occaisions when I don't catch myself in time. I may already be squeezing your breast before I remember. It would help me a lot to know that you're not going to get upset if that happens occasionally. Maybe you could just remind me of what I'm doing.

In my opinion the woman SHOULD get upset to the degree that it makes her feel violated. If it does not bother her much, a reminder is all that is needed. But what if it really does hurt her?

Women are very vulnerable during sex, and we need to feel safe. I would feel less safe with a man who read this book.

Great information -- Not so great reproductions.......2007-04-18

I was pleased and impressed by both the quantity and the quality of the information in this book (5 stars) -- Bennard Perlman did a great job. However I was not at all thrilled with the print quality of the too-few color reproductions. Many of the works looked as if they were photographed through amber glass. (2 stars) I realize Dover is not a high end publisher, but this is an ART BOOK! I just wish Robert Henri's art, graced by Bennard Perlman's text, had warranted a little more quality control. I give this book only 3 stars total.

A Comprehensive Look at a Major Force in American Art.......2006-06-27

Robert Henri was certainly an important figure in the development of American art away from the purely academic style that was beginning to stifle it as it had nearly done in Europe. In France the impressionist movement had altered European art forever, but the United States was not very fast in accepting the change. However, the advent of photography, with its exact images, was making the photographic style of art obsolete. Eventually Henri would lead the way to a more recognizable modern studio style of painting and of teaching, but his early years in the American Midwest certainly belied that brilliant future. The chance fight that led to his father being charged with murder in Nebraska caused the family to change their last names, with his father becoming a Lee and Robert becoming a Henri (he always pronounced it Hen-ry, not On-rie, as one might expect) in order to avoid detection. The family moved east, with Henri studying art in Philadelphia and eventually in Europe. In the mean time his father was cleared, but the family never changed back to their original name of Cozad, possibly out of fear that someone might take revenge on them.

Henri had his blind spots as he failed to see Matisse and Cezanne as the talents they were, but he almost single-handedly pushed American painting and the teaching of art away from neo-classicism into a distinctly American form of Impressionism, and this opened the way for further movement. For all of this, plus his many innovations in the teaching of art that we now take for granted, we owe him a great debt, as well as for his excellent book of observations on the practice of visual art - "The Art Spirit."

In "Robert Henri: His Life and Art" Bennard Perlman has captured the excitement of this sea change in American art and illustrated with many of Robert Henri's best canvases.

I recommend this book highly for those who would understand the period between Winslow Homer and before Georgia O'Keeffe in American art.
