Book Description
"On the Back Road to Mandalay" is the story of twenty years of life and work in the mountains of western Burma. To advance the Christian faith, they had an adventurous life raising their children, running schools, training men and women for ministry, translating the Bible, building churches, producing Christian literature and Sunday school material, and promoting health and education.

They Just Don't Make Missionaries Like They Used To.......2007-04-13
On the Back Road to Mandalay was written by the father of a friend of mine. That's why I bought the book and read it, but I enjoyed it so much, I'm passing it along to other friends of mine.
The title for this book is a take off from the title of a poem by Rudyard Kipling, "On the Road to Mandalay." The author of this book had distinctly different ideas in mind than Kipling did when he wrote his poem.
Mandalay is a city in Myanmar, a country in south east Asia formerly called Burma. On the Back Road to Mandalay is a missionary autobiography, a delightful adventure story about the growth of the Christian church in a mountainous region of the country called the Chin Hills. The author, now 91 years old, lived and worked with his wife and kids in a village called Haka in the years from 1946-1966 with a group called the American Baptist mission. He and his wife were "general" missionaries, not specialists, and did everything from evangelism to Bible translation to medical work to printing Christian literature to drawing plans for a huge church building--all without electricity. This family would have stayed and worked longer except the government kicked them, and all other missionaries, out. But, they hardly needed to stay, for there remains to this day a healthy church in a strongly Buddhist country.
I was impressed with the work for Christ kingdom, no doubt. But I was really interested in his stories of "making do" with what he had to accomplished amazing things. I loved the stories about homemade washing machines, home built saws for cutting stones, building a house with rammed earth, making roofing shingles by dipping cardboard into melted tar, and my favorite, cutting glass with his wife's engagement ring.
I also learned about a vehicle called a Farm-o-Road and about a pre-calculator called an Add-o-Meter.
After reading this book I'm seeing some insights into my friend, like why she likes rice so much, which she likes things neat and in order, and why she's interested in the translation of the Bible into vernacular languages. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
I did find a few typos, and one place where a story was repeated. But I probably won't mention that to my friend. :)

Great fun.......2000-01-10
Really enjoyed Mr Abbott account of his recent trip to Mandalay to teach in the University of Mandalay. The author during his year there experienced the short lived wave of excitement coming out of the fledgling democracy movement. For a flavor of modern upper Burma find yourself a copy, unfortunately it is now out of print.

BACK TO MANDALAY - Dated but terrific.......2005-09-06
Although I have been studying the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater of WWII for nearly 10 years, this book was unknown to me until I recently saw a copy offered on eBay. I bought this via Amazon and I have been thrilled with it. Some of the facts have been revised since this was published in the early 1950's, but the overall story is correct and the personal
quotes from those who were there for the air invasion of northern Burma are just fantastic. The story of the 1st
Air Commando Group is a thriller right off the pages of the comic strips of that era, but it is all true.
Lowell Thomas writes in his usual breezy style, which keeps you turning page after page waiting with anticipation
for what comes next.
For anyone who wishes to know more about what was going on in the CBI while the rest of the worlds eyes were
fastened on Europe and the Pacific this is a great read. RJA
Engaging and complete look at the First Air Commando.......2003-06-10
While focusing on the second Chindit campaign of British Major-General Orde Wingate into Burma, this book manages to convey the essence of the characters without rendering the work itself too dry. From the formation of the USAAF's (the US Air Force was not formed until after WWII) unit to the end of the reconquest of Burma, this book captures the mind of the reader and brings the events to life as few others can. Orde Wingate, the fiery and brilliant commander and innovator, is revealed to have been known only as 'The Man' to his US allies, throughout the ranks of the 1st Commando. Philip Cochran and John Alison, the co-commanders of the air wing seem to almost breath, as their personalities, and perhaps unique compatibility, serve them well in the military rarity - a co-command. An excellent and wholly readable work for anyone interested in Operation Thursday, the China-Burma-India Theater, or the development of airborne penetration of troops behind enemy lines. What these men did then is what modern warfare in its truest sense is today.

The photos and text paint a beautiful and picturesque tribute to this isolated and historic area.
It visually took me back to my three wonderful years among the gentle people and remote countryside!

Book Description
Orchestrated to the sounds of getaway cars and machine guns, the abduction of Oklahoma City businessman Charles Urschel in 1933 was a highly publicized crime in an era when gangsters were folk heroes and kidnapping had become a scourge. The criminals' interstate flight to a desolate hideout in Texas called for federal action, instigating the most intensive manhunt the country had yet seen. It also set in motion a chain of events that would have lasting significance for crime-fighting in America.
In an exciting account of that celebrated manhunt, Stanley Hamilton rekindles the spirit of yesterday's newsreels to chronicle the pursuit and capture of George Machine Gun Kelly and his wife, Kathryn. Tapping a wealth of newspaper reports, court transcripts, literary accounts, and recollections of participants, he draws readers into the chase and its aftermath, unraveling what was then considered the most compelling crime mystery of the day.
Hamilton sets the stage with an overview of the lawlessness of that era and of Kelly's formative years, getting under the skin of a hard-boiled criminal to show us what made Kelly tick. He assembles a cast of larger-than-life characters to weave this tale of true crime, one of the largest of whom was the 38-year-old director of the national police force, J. Edgar Hoover.
Hoover had revitalized an ineffective agency whose operatives were still not authorized to carry firearms or make arrests, and when the Urschel case broke, it was Hoover who stepped up to coordinate the manhunt. Hamilton takes readers behind the scenes in Hoover's operation to show how this case was responsible for popularizing the G-man and institutionalizing the FBI, creating the agent-as-hero image that replaced earlier characterizations of blundering foils to glamorous gangsters.
This iconic kidnapping case, breathlessly followed by a fascinated public, was so quickly and effectively concluded that it was largely instrumental in bringing about the end of the Gangster Era in America. Machine Gun Kelly's Last Stand brings that era to life again by providing a fresh look at one of America's most notorious criminals, vividly recreating the times in which he lived and sharing the stories of the people whose lives he touched.
Customer Reviews:
Machine Gun Kelly's Last Stand.......2006-04-22
The telling of "Machine Gun Kelly's Last Stand" is at once fast-paced, eerie and suspenseful. Stanley Hamilton's eccentric characters are plucked from the pages of history to recreate their nefarious deeds. Truth really is stranger than fiction, and Hamilton fills every keystroke with tension.
The best source of information on this topic.......2006-03-17
I wrote my masters thesis on the Urschel kidnapping case and spent a year reading thousands of related books, articles, historic documents and public records. Hamilton's book was by far the most exhaustive and most accurate account. The few errors in the book are errors that actually exist in the public record (Kathryn Kelly's eyes were green, not hazel; her middle name was not Mae, and a few other minor facts.)
In addition to being accurate and complete, it was also well-written and interesting to read. It's novel-like qualities included excellent character development and conclusions about each player that helped "close" the story. If you want to know the Machine Gun Kelly story, this is the book to read.
BTW: A few interesting facts were not included in the book, such as: 1)the Urschel kidnapping trials were the first in U.S. history to be recorded on moving camera; 2) the Kelly trials were the ONLY federal criminal trial EVER to have news cameras in the courtroom; and 3)Kelly's accomplices were the first criminal suspects ever transported by airplane.
Urschel kidnapping comes alive.......2005-10-20
Stanley Hamilton's account of the Urschel kidnapping is very good in this book. He has some new information on George "Machine Gun" Kelly, which has not be published previously. This book is good reading and should be in your library of crime books. A great job!
Mike Koch, author of "The Kimes Gang."
Last word on Machine Gun Kelly.......2004-01-23
Having read many books on gangsters you come across some real turkeys but Stanley Hamilton's account of Machine Gun Kelly's crimes was very well written without the usual padding out that some writers tend to use.
It is a very informative account of the kidnapping and aftermath which kept me gripped until the end.
The book's ending was, for once, a surprise and I would recommend this title to readers who like True Crime to be based on facts and not the fiction.
Great Narrative.......2003-10-01
Stan Hamilton has written a great narrative history in which there are surprises, odd twists and unexpected heroes. It is a fine well-written book in which neither Kelly nor his foil, J. Edgar Hoover, are the most fascinating charcters' but rather that role is reserved for the smartest of victims, Charles Urchel, and the powerful, conniving Kathryn Kelly. I will not give this one away, but will tell you that this book delivers one first rate couple of evenings of reading which not only tells a strong story but gives an insight into the world of 1933 --gangsters and bootleg gin. You will love this book!!!!

Even a non-quilter will love this beautiful book!.......2007-09-17
I have little ambition to create quilts and actually bought this book as a gift for a friend who is addicted to quilting. But, I was absolutely in love with the book from cover to cover. The photographer should be commended on the expertise shown in photographing these gorgeous quilts in such inspiring backdrops. Now, I am thinking perhaps I should take up this craft again - such beautiful inspiration.
Love This Book.......2007-05-14
I loved this book from the first page to the last. I have all of Kaffe Fassett's books and this one is by far my favorite. The pictures of the antique quilts are beautiful and Kaffe's quilts give a modern remake without losing the integrity of the antique ones. This book will be added to my library of quilting books for always.
Kaffe, so it's great.......2007-04-19
Just an enjoyable book, even if you're just looking and not quilting.

Gardening Favorite.......2002-09-23
Although I'd rather grow plants indoors than cut flowers, there are moments when a fresh-cut bouquet of flowers can brighten up even the most dull day.
"One of the gardener's greatest pleasures is harvesting fragrant, colorful blossoms throughout the growing season. To bring fresh flowers indoors-with their heavenly scents, exquisite colors, and wonderful shapes and textures-is to bring indoors a little piece of paradise."
This is not an extensive book, but it is practical. The contents include:
Planning a Cutting Garden
Cutting Garden Plans
Growing Flowers for Cutting
Cutting and Arranging Flowers
Encyclopedia of Plants
You will also find page after page of freshly blooming flowers all in country-like
settings. The Encyclopedia of plants has a list of 200 plants with pictures. Each includes a description, planting zone information, planting information, care, harvesting and conditioning and uses.
Also includes:
Advice on planting seasonal selections.
Instructions on how to condition and arrange flowers so they last as long as possible.
Tips on designing with color and creating eye-catching color schemes.
Happy Gardening...

No More Dead Flowers In Morning.......2000-08-21
I happened on this book at my library and found it to be the most helpful and informative on cutting gardens, so I had to buy my own copy. This is the best I have found on cutting gardens because, not only does it cover what you need to know from the dirt to the final blossoms, but the encyclopedia of the plants is fantastic. The most helpful is the "HARVESTING AND CONDITIONING" information. My cut flowers where always dead by the next morning before I had this great information. This is a book you will refer to constantly. My copy already has those great dirty pages, a sign of a wonderful well used out in the garden book!
Much more than beautiful pictures........1998-06-30
This book's wealth of practical infomation is presented in a well thought out, easy to understand fashion. Chapters one through four are devoted to the planning of and caring for a cutting garden, as well as creating attractive floral arrangements. Without a doubt, though, my favorite section of the book is the 53 page Encyclopedia of Plants which lists 212 perennials, annuals, herbs, tubers, corms, bulbs, vines, shrubs, and, yes, even an occasional small tree which make suitable cut flowers. Each entry in the encyclopedia contains a photograph and description as well as tips on growing conditions, planting, care, and harvesting and conditioning. Ever wonder which cut flowers require searing, splitting or dipping into boiling water? You'll find the answers here!
Book Description
Key insights into birth order help readers understand themselves and improve their marriage, parenting, and career skills.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-08-02
I had high hopes for this book. From everyone's reviews, it seemed like a fun and interesting read. It wasn't. Sure, there are interesting facts and funny stories about birth order, but it seems like every other paragraph is either about God (which, at times, can start to sound preachy), or about the author himself (how smart he is) and his flawless family (wife, kids, sisters, brothers). I wish the author spent more time talking about actual facts and statistics regarding birth order instead of constantly talking about how, as little kids, his older sister would invite him to tea parties, how selfless she is, or how his son will one day design futuristic rides for Disney World. You get the feeling the author thinks really highly of himself and his family. It gets annoying and gets in the way of any factual information he might be trying to convey.
Read this before you marry - not after.......2007-06-10
Many of the birth order relational dynamics Dr. Leman proposes are eye-opening (see reviews below), but this book should come with a warning label: If you are married, this book could cause you to regret your choice of mate. For example, he seems to say a first-born should never marry another first-born or a last-born another last-born predicting trouble in both cases. Obviously, the author probably never intended to sow discontent, but a young impressionable person could become convinced of 'irreconcilable' differences since Dr. Leman makes birth order characteristics seem carved in stone. Just take all of it with a grain of salt (including this review).
Read this book!.......2006-12-20
If you like to analyze people, things; if you think too much; if your family just totally baffles you sometimes, or makes you want to rip their heads off, then this book is for you. It explains EVERYTHING. Almost everything. Really. Our birth order defines us. Scary. Revealing. Illuminating. Just read it!
Why You Are The Way You Are .......2006-07-30
Fascinating book that focuses on how birth order influences who you are, who you marry, the job you choose and what kind of parent you'll be. This book talks about the first born, middle, youngest and only children and gives descriptions of the strengths and weaknesses of each. Kevin talks about the first born movers and shakers and their perfectionism. The middle born ''inconsistent paradox', & the product of the pressures coming from different directions, the youngest of the family, which myself & the author is himself, 'Last borns love the Limelight', a clown yet rebellious and spoiled and some interesting facts about only children. This book tells why some different birth orders are compatible & why others arent. 'Secrets to selling to different birth orders also how to let your birth order work for you in business.

Review by Irene Watson, author of "The Sitting Swing.".......2005-11-12
The best book on the market that makes sense of birth orders and the roles we play in each order. Very insightful for me. After reading Dr. Leman's book, it became more sense to me why I am the way I am.

Book Description
By the age of 20, Brad Washburn was a mountain-climbing wunderkind who had published four books about mountaineering. Most would consider this accomplishment enough for a lifetime, but for Washburn it was only a beginning.
While a student at Harvard, he studied the pioneering field of aerial surveying and photography. Throughout his life, he would combine this skill with his passion for climbing to make aerial photographs and maps of the world's major landforms, from Mount McKinley in Alaska to Everest. Washburn's improvements to aerial surveying technology resulted in maps of such accuracy and definition that they are still used by climbers today. At age 78, Washburn mad yet another expedition, this time to the Himalaya, leading a scientific team that would determine Everest's true height. Two constants gave ballast to Washburn's life of adventurehis wife and partner-in-adventure, Barbara, and his career as director and visionary behind Boston's Museum of Scienceone of the finest educational institutions in the country.
Filled with exciting and entertaining anecdotesincluding his prescient refusal of Amelia Earhart's offer to have him co-pilot her now famous last flightand with Washburn's breathtaking photography and maps, On High is the first book to reveal, in his own words, the extraordinary life and work of Brad Washburn.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photographs make On High a work of art.......2002-12-12
The biography of Brad Washburn makes a terrific yarn, even for us armchair adventurers. This is a well-told tale, with a transcribed "oral history" from Mr. Washburn, interspersed with the narrative supplied by Mr. Smith. The significance of Mr. Washburn's life, and what makes this book worth reading, is that his mountaineering adventures were part of the 20th century's final conquest of high places in this world. The high mountains were the last frontier, and Mr. Washburn lived it, wrote about it, mapped it, and (more importantly) photographed it. Fortunately, National Geographic chose to include a variety of Mr. Washburn's best photographs. His friendship with, and admiration for, Ansel Adams is apparent. Buy this for the read, but also buy it as a coffee table book.
