            5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2006-01-29

This book got us through Hawaii. We brought two books with us and definitely found this one the most useful and helpful. We were on the four biggest islands and each island was outlined and easy to use. I recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great book - a must for the Hawaii traveler........2004-09-05

Great book - and useful information. My wife and I have been to Hawaii now quite a few times and this book still seems to be essential for us. We bring it on every trip. We have been to Maui, Honolulu and the Big Island too with this book.

The book is presented in a predictable yet interesting format. The information about attractions, accommodations and food is accurate and well presented. The maps are useful. Every few pages there are a few key boxes that describe or highlight an interesting point - for example alerts, tourist traps, local culture, advisories etc. Of all the Hawaii books I've seen (and own) this still stands out as one of the most useful and best! I strongly suggest purchasing this book.

Our First trip to Hawaii and this book was the best ever! As a family, we reviewed the topics and what we loved to do while on vacation; we then selected our preferred island; and then selected our accomodations based on Idiot's Guide recommendations. This book hit the mark! We learned a lot before we went and valued its recommendations while there.

I bought this book for my parents to take with them on their first trip (50th anniversary) to Hawaii. I've been to Hawaii several times and have had several guide books. I love this one the best. It it easy to read, larger print than some of the guide books, written so that it is entertaining to read. What I love the best is that every page has side bar lists that rank the same things, i.e, most romantic restaurant, restaurants with ocean view, best breakfasts, etc. I came online to re-order myself one (since I keep borrowing my parent's gift back!), only to find that it is out of print. ...

5 out of 5 stars Valuable--I hope it is reprinted soon.......2000-12-11

An outstanding overall guide to Hawaii--The best feature is a "quiz" which helps you decide which island(s) you will find most enjoyable. It has general advice on visiting Hawaii, how to get the best deals, etc., followed by a chapter on each of the major islands. It does not cover islands a new visitor is less likely to visit, such as Lanai and Molokai. The specific chapters on each island give useful coverage of major attractions or activities, and very detailed commentary on a limited number of hotels/resorts/B&Bs. I highly recommend the book, but once you have decided to visit, I recommend that you buy specific books covering the island(s) you want to visit. If you want to spend more than a few days on a given island, you will probably want more detailed coverage than given in this book. Despite this, the book is VERY valuable for a first-time visitor who wants to figure out the who, what, where, why and how of a Hawaiian vacation.

Martin Bell lost in his attempt to win the seat of Brentwood and Ongar in the 2001 general election, however this memoir looks at his time as MP (Independent) for Tatton from 1997 until 2000 when he wrote this book. Quite candid and interesting, it looks at the work of a man who was the first MP to be non party affiliated since 1950, (minus succesive Speakers) and it examines the strains and joys of the job.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling, heart rending, well-written true crime.......2007-05-24

Written by David Smith, who lost his infant and toddler sons when his wife sank her car with their children into a lake and watched it sink - and them drown. She then reported that she had been carjacked, and her children stolen. For nine days there was a media frenzy as the nation looked for those boys. I remember that.

And then, finally, she confessed, and the car, and the boys, were found at the bottom of a lake. I thought his story would be compelling. It certainly is.

If this story isn't an argument for abortion, I don't know what is. Of course, Susan Smith didn't choose abortion. She was a "Christian" and "didn't believe in abortion." She sure as hell didn't want to be a mother.

She also had a narcissistic personality, as well as a narcissistic mother. Self-centered to the absolute maximum. No one existed outside of their own little world, no one else mattered.

Susan Smith also had a stepfather who molested her. She may also have been an alcoholic, with very deep roots. This is a woman who desperately needed attention, and she was getting it the only way she knew how. Too bad no one else noticed...until it was too late.

4 out of 5 stars Two innocent babies.......2005-06-22

This book made me rather emotional. You learn about two teenagers who meet and fall in love. The young couple is David and Susan, and they both have a far from easy life behind them so far. Susan's parents had a violent relationship, and sometimes Susan's dad would threaten to kill Susan's mum. Three weeks after their divorce Susan's dad commits suicide, and a couple of weeks later Susan's mum remarries. Susan's new step-father sexually abuses her, and when her mum finds out, she decides to stay with her new man. Several members of Susan's family have committed or attempted to commit suicide, and some (like her father) have been too fond of alcohol.

Even though David's family background may not be as bad as Susan's, his life hasn't been too easy either. His father tried to commit suicide, while his mother was very religious. In the end David decides to follow his brother and move in with his grandmother. Another blow happens in his life while he is dating Susan: His brother Daniel dies. Because Susan is pregnant, Susan's mother presses on and the young couple marries two weeks later.

After reading the book and some additional information, I am sitting with the impression that these two should never have started a family. They were far too immature and their troubled background made things even worse. They fight a lot and both have extra-marital affairs. David seems to have big problems in sticking to one woman at the time. Susan's second pregnancy is a tough one, and David seems too immature to face it. He finds new love with Tiffany, and instead of staying with his pregnant wife and baby Michael, he spends his time with her. For a short while David splits up with Tiffany, and she becomes crazy and starts to keep David and his family awake at night. My opinion is that David does little to protect his family during this time.

Shortly after Alexander's birth Susan and David parts again, and just over a year later; in a period of six weeks Susan has four lovers: Her boyfriend, her boyfriend's father, Susan's stepfather and David.

In the middle of all this there are two small innocent babies: Michael and Alexander. They are bystanders, while their parents try to figure out their lives. Their lives gets a very cruel and tragic end when their disturbed mother kills them.

It wasn't difficult to get through the book, even though the narrative is of average quality. Still, the picture of these two innocent children and their father's story about their short lives, make this into a book it is very difficult to forget.

                  5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2004-02-28

This is an incredible book. Instead of writing a book and claiming he was the perfect guy and he was the victim, David told it how it was (unlike Susan Smith's mother, who also wrote a book that basically blamed everyone but Susan and the Russell family). He admitted that he was at times a bad husband. Both he and Susan were immature in their marraige. He made mistakes. But, he and Susan were perfect parents. Which makes this case all the more puzzling.

Why would Susan murder her two boys like this?! I get so angry. At 14, no one my age understands how I feel. All the way through this book, I kept having to stop and ask myself WHY. WHY didn't she give MIchael and Alex to David. WHY didn't she tell anyone that she didn't want those babies anymore. WHY did she drown them? WHY did she let their bodies rot for nine days?!

I sympathize for David. It's happy to report that he has a new wife and two more kids (Savannah and Nicholas), but imagine that, everytime one of your kids do something, everytime something new in a tabloid or the mail shows up about the case, the facts come hurling back to you.

David, you are one strong man!!!

5 out of 5 stars Remember who are the TRUE victims!!!.......2003-05-27

This was such a sad bad. Like David Smith said, "Remember who are the true victims in all this, Miicheal and Alex, NOT Susan Smith! It was a good and fast reading and I a book is so much better when it's write by a person who the story concern them and not from a famous writer, is even better when the writer is not a writer, so from people who said this book is good but the editing is bad, I don't see what is bad, I thought the book was very good and it comming from the heart and soul to who that real story had happen, you can feel his pain! Everybody was saying how Susan was too good for David, my God it was the other way around, David was too good for Susan. Susan was picture as like a hot, sexy girl, sorry to me she look like a ordinary house wife and kinda chubby, she come from the South right? Yeah she do look like redneck, the way she dress and wear her hair are out of fashion even in 90th, well I am out of context here but can't help saying that to me see doesn't look hot stuff and one of the book with her glasses and her hair pine up she look like a geek! Like David Smith said, the two persons who love her the most, (their kids), she had killed them, how can a mother do this to her own children and said she love them? Why David Smith want so much the death penalty for Susan, if she got a soul she suffer much more in prison, well if she got one. She seem only to think for herself and feel pity for herself. Killing her children because she was in love with a guy that didn't want a family allready made, so she killed her kids and to have the pity of the man she love she make a a big lie that a man took over her car and push her out put kept the kids. Did she really think she could live with the rest of her life with that story and have back the man she love? She was stupid, he was also having other affair and like I said Susan is no hot thing, why he would go with her? Still a part of me pity her, if she really was having depression it can make you do stupid things, yeah maybe she was really insane!

                  4 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2002-07-20

It was fascinating to hear the story from an iside perspective. Its so awful all around.David Smith must be a strong man to have went on with life like he did.I think Susan was seriously crazy, so I do feel a touch of sympathy for her. Its awful what happened to those poor kids.

These are current sires or sires that are close up in the pedigrees of today's horses. Bradley analyzes each horse sire by sire, dam by dam, cross by cross and nick by nick. He suggests links in the pedigree of each horse leading to its success; reviews the bloodlines that seem to work best with each stallion and mare line; and discusses strategies to take advantage of the strength of each horse. The book's handsome, simulated-leather binding makes it an ideal gift for fans of the Standardbred. It's the perfect companion to Bradley's Modern Trotting Sire Lines.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Thorough Review..........2000-04-04

An execellent reference both for those interested in the history of harness racing and those dealing everyday with the geneology of present day trotters and pacers. The introductory material is well-organized, cogent and "reads" well. The documentation is complete and well-presented. Layout works well for research purposes.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Wood: A Craftsman's Guide to Wood Technology.......2007-06-01

This book takes the reader beyond the basic understanding of wood. If you are interested in a deeper look at wood as an engineering material or if you are more than a weekend woodworker, this book fills a big gap between the pure scientific and craftsman levels. Well written and great illustrations.

I've been using this book for years, and it has come in handy, providing a lot of useful information over the years. But now I'm looking for something more up-to-date. The Encyclopedia of Wood comes from the United States Department of Agriculture and is the best wood technology reference around. And it's a better bargain...a newer book at an old-fasioned price!

This book contains a great wealth of information, my only complaint is the data is not referenced for sources of information. Trying to verify or follow up on specific information is not easy.

After you've advanced past the Time-Life 'how to' style books, get this one.

This is an absolute Bible of working with wood. The amount of usefull, intelligent info in here is staggering. This one definately covers the "whys" of wood (why does it do this or that). If you want to know "what" to do with wood (joinery, etc) then look up Tage Frid. I feel the need to say that this book is actually rather scientific. By that I mean it has lots and lots of details and microscopic pictures and things you'd learn in a college class. If you're not really into that kind of stuff, you might not find this book usefull to you.

Personally, I wish I would've gotten this book a long time ago and not ruined so much nice wood in the mean time!

And as always, Amazon has a great price and had it in my hands within a couple of days (literally 2 days) from ordering it.

                        Book Description

Hugs and smiles and playtime: If only parenting 2- to 5-year-olds was this simple. But any parent of a toddler or preschooler knows that it also often requires dealing with whining, tantrums, "no, I won't" and other generally naughty behavior that tests the limits of your ingenuity and patience. How can parents balance nurturing behaviors that demonstrate love and affection with the discipline all children need to learn and thrive? Common Sense Parenting of Toddlers and Preschoolers shows parents how discipline can be more about teaching than punishment and more positive than negative for both you and your child.

                        Included in these pages:

How to set reasonable expectations based on your child's age, development, and abilities

How to use a parent's version of "show and tell" to both prevent problems and correct misbehavior

How to use praise like a compass, helping your child stay on the right path

How to create plans for staying calm for you and your child

How to use consistency, consequences, and practice to help your child learn what you expect of him or her

How to celebrate special rituals and everyday routines as cherished family traditions

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-03-09

The book is easily readable, a quick read, which I appreciated. And many things were discussed, not necessarily answered for me, but things I am thinking about were answered. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because my situation is different from the author's situation, so some of the material misses the mark (for me).

At the same time I will keep the book for future reference.

                        5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2006-11-05

This is a great book - my husband and I have put the advice into action and it works! For example. practice with your toddler, prevent bad behavior: my husband took our 2 1/2 year daughter trick or treating. After a few houses he came back and said she wouldn't say thank you to anyone. I got down to her level and we practiced, you knock on the door, say trick or treat, I pretended to give her candy and told her to say thank you. I was very specific but kept it in her terms and it worked!! She told everyone else that night thank you. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't feel like we needed it, it's really helped. They talk about praise, time out and reminding mom and dad how important it is to stay calm. After all, they're watching everything we do even when we don't think they're even listening.

4 out of 5 stars That's why they say Common Sense..........2006-04-21

A very helpful book and well written. Alot of the points in topics are common sense and when you read them your like well "duh" but you'd be surprised how refreshing it is to have these points acknowledged. I like how the book starts with a little background in child development and offers a better understanding of a child as over the years it is easily forgotten what it is like to be a child and their mind set. I do love the book and like how it is set up where you do have to read through the book to get the whole concept. The only reason I did not give it five stars even though I loved it, the book although says toddlers (which to me is 18mnths-2yrs) it seems like it was more geared to an older child possible 4 yrs and older. I could be wrong but alot of the technique and such have not worked on my almost two year old and neither did the approach. But over all it was an excellent book and would reccommend it.

                        5 out of 5 stars absolutely excellent.......2003-04-23

i just had to take the time to write this review to let people know how wonderful this book is. If you don't believe in yelling at or hitting your children, but you can't figure out what else to do, this is the book for you. I have a 4 year old and have been following this book's advice for about 6 months and it works every time. it worked right from the beginning. It made sense to me and fit my style of wanting to "teach" my daughter rather than scold and threaten. It gives you examples and step by step instructiions. It is not a book that you can just "flip through" to get answers to your questions. You have to "read" it all the way through because one section links to the other. But it reads easily and quickly like you are talking to someone who understands. You can read it in a day or two. My copy is highlighted and dog-eared all the way through. I can't say enough about this book. My daughter and I are BOTH happier and better "behaved". I hope the authors have written other books on the next age group and adolescents.

                        Book Description

David Hockney is as fascinating as he is articulate on ways of seeing, and in this impressive book he leads us on an artistic journey where anything is possible. He considers the influence of Picasso and Rembrandt and speaks of Eastern conventions and their relevance to his work. He points to Laurel and Hardy's lasting appeal in his conviction that popularity and art are not incompatible. Hockney and his work have long been the subjects of controversy—few 20th century artists have so successfully surmounted their cult image for three decades; yet and he remains one of our most relentlessly dedicated, versatile, and original painters.

                        5 out of 5 stars Inside an artist's mind.......2006-06-02

I am an artist and have owned this book for years. I find it one of the most unique books on art I have read and continue to find it a valuable resource as a visual reference for Hockney's work, in particular his important photographic work and how photography relates to his painting. The book is constructed around a set of informal interviews by the friend and author, and as such is disarmingly informal in presentation yet thoroughly rigorous in critical thinking. Far from being merely an artist of pleasure, Hockney is revealed to be a formidable theorist with a crackling intelligence. This book pulls back the curtain of artist as celebrity and reveals a man who is vibrantly invested in his art, and in all of art, as well as in life. Recommended.

a lot of chumming by Paul Joyce, pandering to Mr. Hockney who holds forth with nothing to give him pause.
I admire mr. hockneys paintings but I think he should have heeded one of his heroes, Picasso, and say little. Let his work speak for itself.
I am sorry I read it because now I will remember blah-blah-blah whenever I see one of his paintings. Regrettable.

Audrey Healy's Dubliners: What's the Story? is a delightful collection of interviews with, and pen pictures of, more than fifty of the city's most famous sons and daughters. It ranges in scope from Arthur Guinness to Gay Byrne and takes in James Joyce, Luke Kelly, and Maeve Binchy along the way.

Speaking openly and animatedly, those featured reflect on early childhood memories, schooldays, families, hopes, dreams and ambitions. But most of all, they speak of Dublin city, the place which generates deep emotion in the heart of all its children.

So much more than a city of structure and developing lands, it represents something else, an energy and culture unequalled and unmatched by any other.
