Book Description
INTRODUCTION
With its wonderful natural setting, straddling the River Danube, its beautiful architecture and excellent Magyar cuisine, Budapest is one of the most satisfying cities in Europe to visit. Its magnificent waterfront and boulevards invite comparisons with Paris, Prague and Vienna - as do many features of its cultural life such as its coffee houses, its love of opera and its wine-producing tradition. However, the city is also distinctively Hungarian, its inhabitants displaying fierce pride in their Magyar ancestry. Their language too, whose nearest European relatives are Finnish and Turkish, underlines the difference.
Ironically, provincial Hungarians have long regarded Budapest as a hotbed of alien values and loose morals - a charge that misses the point. Foreigners have played a major role in the city since its inception, and the Chinese and Arab communities established since the end of Communism simply bring it up to date as an international city. Even the sex trade that has earned it the reputation of the "Bangkok of Europe" is nothing new, having been a feature of life during Habsburg times. In politics, art and much else, Budapest is not only the capital but a catalyst for the country, without which Hungary would be a far duller place.
Fundamental to the city's layout and history is the River Danube - which is seldom blue. It separates Buda on the hilly west bank from Pest on the eastern plain. Várhegy (Castle Hill) on the Buda side was for many centuries the seat of monarchs, and its palace, museums, churches and Baroque streets make it the obvious place to start sightseeing. Thereafter, you can wander through the Víziváros (Watertown) below the hill, before pushing on to Gellért-hegy (Gellért Hill), with its crags and towering Liberation Monument. The historic Turkish baths in the Tabán quarter between the two hills are also well worth experiencing.
Over in Pest, you're likely to spend most of your time enjoying the streetlife, bars and restaurants within the Belváros (Inner City) and the surrounding districts. In contrast to the medieval street plan of Várhegy and the Belváros, these surrounding districts are defined by two semicircular boulevards - the Kiskörút (Small Boulevard) and the Nagykörút (Great Boulevard) - and radial avenues such as Andrássy út and Rákóczi út. Exploring the area between them can easily occupy you for several days.
In the Lipótváros, the financial and government centre, the interest lies in St Stephen's Basilica, the monumental Parliament building rivalling the Várhegy across the Danube, and some wonderful buildings around Szabadság tér (Liberty Square), including one by Ödön Lechner, whose work is often likened to Gaudí's in Barcelona. In the Terézváros one can hardly avoid making comparisons with Paris, as Andrássy út and the Opera House were clearly inspired by Haussmann's work for Napoleon III. Andrássy út terminates at Hosök tere (Heroes' Square), a magnificent imperial set piece that is Budapest's Les Invalides and Nelson's Column rolled into one.
Of the remaining inner-city districts, the Erzsébetváros and Józsefváros hold the most appeal. The former is traditionally Budapest's Jewish quarter, with a rich and tragic history that's still palpable in the backstreets, making them a wonderful place to explore. The great synagogue on Dohány utca provides more historical information. The adjacent Józsefváros is also fascinating but quite seedy in parts, though there's nothing to fear in the vicinity of the National Museum, or even at Kerepesi Cemetery, out beyond the Nagykörút. In Ferencváros, the attractions are the Great Market Hall on the Kiskörút, and the Applied Arts Museum further out, in an amazing building by Lechner.
Other parts of the city are also rewarding, but you need to be selective. Óbuda (Old Buda) really only lives up to its name in one locality, though its postwar sprawl harbours several Roman remains, with the ruins of Aquincum further out in Római-Fürdo. More alluringly, there are the Buda Hills that encircle the city to the west, with enjoyable rides on the Cogwheel and Children's railways, and intriguing caves to be visited. In fine weather people also flock to Margit sziget (Margit Island) to swim and sunbathe at two enormous lidos.
Further out, but still within the city limits, the Statue Park of redundant Communist monuments and the Rail Heritage Park of steam trains rate as major attractions, while the Budakeszi Game Park and two romantic cemeteries might not be everyone's idea of fun, but can claim many admirers.
One of the great things about Budapest is that most of its pleasures are affordable for visitors on a tight budget. Delicious meals can be had all over the city, and discovering things for yourself can be half the fun. Though Hungarian cuisine is noted for its richly sauced meat and fish dishes, there are enough alternatives (Indian, Chinese, Italian, Middle Eastern) for vegetarians to enjoy themselves too.
Budapest's nightlife is also very affordable and, though small, it caters for a wide range of tastes. There isn't always much of a distinction between clubs and bars, as many bars play live music or have a disco; beer halls, however, usually serve full meals. Generally, the scene is trouble-free and welcoming, with a whole network of events that are surprisingly accessible. This is especially true of the Táncház (Dance House) scene, where Hungarians of all ages perform wild stamping dances to the rhythms of darkest Transylvania, and internationally renowned artists like Márta Sebestyén appear in an informal setting.
In the case of classical music and opera, world-class ensembles and soloists can be enjoyed in the palatial settings of the Vigadó and State Opera House, especially during the major festivals in spring, summer and autumn. You can also go to outdoor concerts on Margit sziget (Margit Island) over summer. For fans of pop, rock and world music, the two big events are the Budapesti Bucsú, first held to celebrate the departure of Soviet troops in 1991, and the Sziget Festival, which claims to be the largest in Europe.

Customer Reviews:
Good history section - poor maps.......2006-12-27
This guide book could be improved in many respects. Budapest has a wonderful public transportation system that is relatively easy to use when quality maps are available. Unfortunately this guide book's overall city maps are bare bones. Small detailed maps of specific locations are generally thorough, but need to include the names of more side streets in the parts of the city where the streets meander.
The historical details and backgrounds of buildings and sites is quite helpful, but the info as to how to get there needs improving. The page design and chapter title on the side of each page is helpful when thumbing through, but I don't recommend this edition.
Difficult to use and lacking vs Lonely Planet.......2006-11-01
I will admit that I am normally a Lonely Planet person, but I decided to try this one for a change. And since it was just for one city, how bad could it be....? Well, I thought it s**ked!! Poor layout, no comprehensive city map (just detailed section maps and a very vague overview map) made it difficult to navigate from one district to another. Also, for a guide on JUST ONE city it was very sparse in terms of places to stay and places to eat. I will never go with Rough Guide again without first carefully checking it out Before I buy. It just did not have the practical details I needed from a city guide book. LP does a much better job. Hope this helps.

A great little book for a short trip.......2000-05-24
I used this book during a long weekend trip to Budapest and found it to be very helpful. The maps in the back are wonderful, and the text provides map coordinates which makes it so much easier to find shops, restaurants, etc. than most guidebooks. It's small size makes it easy to carry around to consult, as well. Highly recommended!
A great little book for a short trip.......2000-03-29
I used this book on a long weekend in Budapest and found it extremely useful - especially the maps. It's particularly handy to have something small and light to bring along while exploring and this book covers the basics well. For a trip of a weekend or 5 days, you won't need anything else. Budapest is a wonderful city with very friendly people. Go there!

Book Description
A complete, easy-to-use guide for every cat lover. Two vets answer some 250 questions about common feline problems and everyday healthcare. With complete descriptions of 25 popular breeds.
Book Description
Award-winning fiber artist Mary Hettmansperger reveals the secrets of using traditional basketry techniques to create 28 striking pieces of jewelry. It's a new and exciting approach that yields remarkable results--even for beginners. She covers four basic procedures--plaiting, knotting, looping, and twining--and incorporates materials such as copper, colorful wire, natural fibers, even bottle tops and bark. The array of projects includes soft-fiber necklaces as well as one made from looped linen over a forged silver mold: small retro pins, bright and colorful in twined pattern shaped; and a variety of pieces made from wire twisted with beads. There's no other book like it, and it's sure to appeal to a diverse range of crafters.
Customer Reviews:
New way of thinking.............2007-08-27
I am primarily a jewelry artist, and wanted to incorporate weaving techniques into my work. This book is amazing! I was fortunate enough to be able to take a class from Mary, and found that the illustrations and directions made for perfect "notes" from the class. Don't be intimidated by the techniques..... they're very simple and easy to follow. The trick is to practice the technique and then determine how to incorporate it into YOUR work with your imagination! LOVE the book!
A really eclectic selection of materials.......2007-07-12
Before I read this book, I had not considered how basketry techniques and materials might be applied to jewelry. Wire, metal sheets, paper and found objects are also used. Very good illustrations and a nice selection of projects. This book really expanded my horizons.
Inspires to using new techniques.......2007-06-12
I bought this book after having it recommended to me. And I'm not disappointed. To be true, it was not exactly what I thought it would be. But I did enjoy it. I've learnt many new techniques and enjoy the mix of metal and fiber.
Somewhat more than half the project use fiber, including raffia and black ash etc, and the rest wire. The projects, in my opinion, are not as interesting as the techniques used. To me this is a book on techniques, not on designs. I most probably won't try any of the specific projects in the book. Although they are fairly good examples of what can be made in the line of woven jewelry. There is also a good mix of styles being used so while some projects feel a bit similar, there's still enough variation to show different ways of using the same technique.
But the lack of inspirational designs in the project part is compensated by the great gallery in the end of the book. Approximatly 15 metal wire and 12 fiber projects are featured. And as the main part of the book inspires the use of textile techniques, the gallery gives inspiration in the process of going from technique to an actual piece of jewelry. And hopefully also in the process of finding your own style.
You'll have to use your imagination.......2007-06-08
The photo on the cover of this book is beautiful. I am searching for innovative techniques to incorporate into my textile designs and art quilts. I'm not at all interested in the specific projects illustrated in the book, however I was inspired by some of the techniqes. If you are an artist who likes to work in mixed media, then this book will serve you well. If you're coming to the table with your own sense of curiousity & adventure and you just need to see some fresh takes...This book will get the creative juices flowing.
Fabulous Woven Jewelry: Plaiting, Coiling, Knotting, Looping & Twining with Fiber & Metal.......2007-05-14
Nice book but very simplistic. More for the beginner.
Book Description
This is a truly comprehensive book on fuchsia growing, from basics to hybridizing. There are descriptions of species and cultivars, including scented fuchsias, as well as advice on the best selections for beds and baskets. Pruning, cultivation, and propagation are also covered.
Customer Reviews:
Useful but could have stood professional editing.......2007-07-04
The book is one of the few complete Fuchsia references left (at least, in English--there are a few more in German and sometimes these are sold in English-language markets for lack of other options).
The sections on how to achieve various goals are a bit long on prose and short on procedure.
The section on pests and diseases seems backwards--the section headings are the names of the diseases--the expectation seems to be that you already know the disease and then read about the life-cycle of the agent that causes it! My experience advising neophyte Fuchsia growers is that they tell me the symptoms and expect me to determine the disease and what to do about it. It really should have been a symptomatic approach. This section too is long on prose and short on procedure--there is a lengthy discussion of spider mites including speculation on why some of them turn red, but not much about what to do about them. There is a section on spider mite predators but no clear instructions on how to use them (assuming that's the point of that section).
There are other oddities in the way information is organized. There is a brief section on scented Fuchsias derived from Fuchsia paniculata--naturally these exist in the chapter on Encycliandras (sarcasm--F. paniculata is not an Encycliandra--but if I didn't know better, reading that chapter I'd think it were). The section on Encycliandras briefly discusses breeding them but only barely mentions, in a caption, what is significant and different about them. If I didn't already know what they are, the section on Encycliandras would just be confusing to me.
Possibly the most useful and best-written section is the guide to Fuchsia species near the end of the book. There are also some photographs of some of the species including several rare in cultivation. The book also does cover some sections of the genus Fuchsia, and their hybrids, that are rarely discussed in other Fuchsia references.

Flip-Flop Your Concept of Giving!
Bestselling author Randy Alcorn introduced readers to a revolution in material freedom and radical generosity with the release of the original The Treasure Principle in 2001. Now the revision to the compact, perennial bestseller includes a provocative new concluding chapter depicting God asking a believer questions about his stewardship over material resources. Readers are moved from the realms of thoughtful Bible exposition into the highly personal arena of everyday life. Because when Jesus told His followers to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,” He intended that they discover an astounding secret: how joyful giving brings God maximum glory and His children maximum pleasure.
Discover a joy more precious than gold!
Priceless treasure is within your reach. And with it, liberating joy.
In Randy Alcorn ’s The Treasure Principle, you’ll unearth a radical teaching of Jesus—a secret wrapped up in giving. Once you discover this secret, life will never look the same. And you won’t want it to!
Pull Out Section:
Do it. Ask God what’s on your mind….

“Supercharged with stunning, divine truth! Lightning struck over and over as I read it.”

“The Treasure Principle will change your life! This book is destined to become a classic.”
Howard Dayton , Co-CEO, Crown Financial Ministries
“The Scripture passages and illustrations really ring true. Just what I needed!”
Hugh Maclellan , President, The Maclellan Foundation
“I enthusiastically endorse The Treasure Principle. I hope millions will read it.”
Ronald W. Blue , Founder and CEO, Ronald Blue & Company
Story Behind the Book
After years of writing and teaching on the theme “God owns everything,” in 1990 Randy Alcorn was sued by an abortion clinic (for peaceful, nonviolent intervention for the unborn). Suddenly he had to resign as a pastor and was restricted to making minimum wage. Legally unable to own anything, Randy gave all his book royalties to missions work and need-meeting ministries. He and his family have experienced the reality of The Treasure Principle—that God really does own everything, takes care of us, and graciously puts assets into our hands that we might have the joy and privilege of investing in what will last for eternity.
Customer Reviews:
Poor Stewardship of Scripture.......2006-07-07
I'm not sure which is more distressing - the author's egregious misuse of Scripture or the plethora of glowing endorsements this book is receiving. Both are the result of not applying sound principles of biblical interpretation taught to beginning hermeneutics students.
Stewardship of wealth must begin with stewardship of the Scriptures. Alcorn's failure in the latter is why, in my considered view, he fails in the former. In fact, even if Alcorn is right (which I don't believe he is) that somehow there are degrees of reward in heaven and that you can accumulate things there on the basis of what you do here, no one should accept his view based on the reasons he offers. Alcorn's (and many other stewardship pundits') basic problem is plucking verses completely out of context and making them say what they do not. Even a cursory reading of chapter one reveals numerous examples of this. For example, Jesus' parables about the hidden treasure and pearl of great price are not about accumulation of some treasure in heaven, but rather entering the kingdom of God (i.e., obtaining eternal life). Also, Alcorn's use of Jesus' dialogue with the rich, young man (Matthew 19) misses the point. Again, this was not about accumulating treasures in heaven, but about gaining eternal life (i.e., entering the kingdom of God). Notice, in this dialogue Jesus uses "eternal life," "treasure in heaven," "enter the kingdom of heaven," and "enter the kingdom of God" interchangeably. One last example is Alcorn's use of Matthew 19:29. He fails to understand Jesus' claim about the 100 times return for those who sacrifice for Jesus' sake because he does not consider the parallel account in Mark's gospel (Mark 10:30) where Jesus specifically says this return will come "in this age" and the reward in the age to come will be eternal life. The examples of poor stewardship of Scripture could go on. The reader will have to play the part of the Bereans (Acts 17:11) and examine carefully Alcorn's teaching to see if it really is what Scripture teaches.
Despite some helpful material (all our possessions are God's and we are just stewards, Christians need to be generous and sacrificial givers), this book is a dismal failure scripturally. Even though many have found this book to have changed their giving and stewardship for the better, the ends do not justify the means. It teaches a suspect theology of stewardship because it teaches poor handling of Scripture. And, proper stewardship of wealth begins with proper stewardship of Scripture. Unfortunately we get neither in this book.
Great book........2006-06-25
This was a good book with sound biblical principles on giving. It made me totally reevaluate my own giving.
CAUTION: COMMITMENT REQUIRED.......2006-04-06
If you're looking for a feel-good, warm-fuzzy book, you may not want to purchase this one. It is a book that will challenge and change you. You may believe you are a generous and joyful giver, totally committed to God, but after reading this book, you may have to rethink that self-assessment. If you are sincerely looking for a deeper relationship with God and you aren't afraid of a deeper level of commitment, you WILL BE a changed person--for the better--after reading The Treasure Principle.
And, no, I'm NOT a pastor, and I've bought 20 copies to share with friends who are on the same path I am. (See the ONE really negative evaluation in the "other" section entitled, "Nothing but Money-Grubbing Propaganda," April 22, 2004.) And I didn't find it money-grubbing at all. I found it life-changing. I'm sorry the "be-rater" didn't. I'm so glad another non-pastor shared the book with me!
Complete 180 from World View.......2006-01-17
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which challenges the reader to view material possessions as they truly are - gifts that belong to God and are given to us to manage while here on earth. A quick read, with wonderful Biblical principles, this book is a breath of fresh air and a call to store up heavenly treasures.
Amazing book. Don't miss out on this treasure........2005-12-31
Randy Alcorn does an amazing job in this book of pulling together many different verses in the Bible that talk about money and making the whole issue of money, giving, and tithing a whole lot clearer.
The foundation of the book is this little truth: "You can't take it with you--but you can send it on ahead." That's what Alcorn calls the Treasure Principle. He bases it on what Jesus says in Matthew 6:19-20: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."
Alcorn gives six keys to the Treasure Principle. They're a good condensed summary of his book:
1. God owns everything. I'm His money manager.
2. My heart always goes where I put God's money.
3. Heaven, not earth, is my home.
4. I should live not for the dot [life on earth] but for the line [eternity/life in heaven].
5. Giving is the only antidote to materialism.
6. God prospers me not to raise my standard of living, but to raise my standard of giving.
I really appreciated his emphasis on eternity. He points out that we so often spend all of our energy gaining treasures for the here and now, forgetting that they're going to be lost in eternity: "[W]hen Jesus warns us not to store up treasures on earth, it's not just because wealth might be lost; it's because wealth will always be lost. Either it leaves us while we live, or we leave it when we die. No exceptions."
The book is very readable, and can easily be finished in an hour and a half. I'd very highly recommend it for anyone. I've already bought multiple copies to give away.

In this companion Bible study, the principles become personally applicable and more real than ever, with a powerful combination of biblical concepts, practical quotations from the book, thought-provoking questions, group discussion starters, and short Scripture passages for meditation and memorization. Managing God's investment in their lives will become a new delight, as Christians learn to put their resources to their most rewarding use.
Download Description
In this first book in the new LifeChange series, bestselling author Randy Alcorn introduces readers to a revolution in material freedom and radical generosity that will change lives around the world. Ninety-five percent of Christians have never come to terms with a biblical perspective on their material possessions, Alcorn writes. God has entrusted His wealth to us and called upon us to manage and invest His money. This is in everyone?s best interests, including our own. When Jesus told His followers to "lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven," he intended that they discover an astounding secret: how joyful giving brings God maximum glory and his children maximum pleasure.
Customer Reviews:
This book is AMAZING!.......2004-08-06
This is one of the best books I have read. Intended for a Christian audience, "The Treasure Principle" is so simple, yet it has made such an impact on my life. The whole focus of the book is on how believers can use the money God has entrusted to them here on earth to make an eternal impact. In a time when people seek bigger homes, nicer cars and perfect bodies, this book makes Christians question how they use their money. It's a short book and an easy read. I cannot say enough good things about this book. I've purchased about 10 copies to pass along to others.

What a wonderful Christmas Book!!!.......2005-12-24
I got this book at a museum that was having an exhibit of Norman Rockwell's work. When I got home I sat down with it and flipped through. I love the Christmas pictures that he did. And the stories that were chosen are perfect for this book. I don't have children, but I can see how reading to them from this book would be a perfect childhood tradition to have. I am so glad I got this book.
ROCKWELL IS CHRISTMAS.......2004-12-01
Norman Rockwell's Christmas book is filled with great stories, poems, and recollections of Christmas. But the real selling point...the main reason to pickup this book is the brilliant art of Norman Rockwell.
When we think Holidays...Thanksgiving, Christmas...we always want to picture ours to be as perfect, as joyful as one of Rockwell's paintings. They never are, of course, but we can still try.
Perhaps no artist ever has capture the sense of awe and wonderment of the Christmas season than Rockwell. You cannot help but smile ear-to-ear as you thumb through the pages. A Real Joy!
Perfect Christmas book.......2003-02-16
I first saw this book at my niece's home Christmas day; her husband had given it to her as a present. I thumbed through it and couldn't wait to get home and order it. Lovely illustrations and poems and stories. This would be a perfect Christmas present. Keep this in mind for this year's gift giving and keep one for yourself. You won't be sorry.
Norman Rockwell's Christmas Book.......1999-12-23
This is an ideal gift or a treasure to keep for yourself. I am a 25 year old that has enjoyed this book with my family every Christmas since I can remember. The stories and pictures will warm your heart! It has been a tradition in my family and one I recommend for any family!
Memories.......1999-12-20
I am 26 years old, and my father has read my sister and I a story from this book every Christmas Eve since I can remember. Even the few times we have spent Christmas away from home, we have brought this book with us. This Christmas will be the first Christmas I have ever been apart from my family. I will be spending it with my new husband. We'll be starting Christmas traditions of our own - but this is one we will always carry on... Thanks Daddy.

Basically what one might expect..........2006-12-26
This book is nothing more and nothing less than one might expect from a book titled "A Norman Rockwell Christmas." It is a collection of about 75 of Rockwell's paintings, each of which has some connection to Christmas. The dominant themes are Santa and family.
There is a brief introduction, which explains the premise and describes the background of a few of the paintings. I was a bit taken aback by the statement in that introduction that, "Humans make the magic, Rockwell reminded us, placing the spirit of Christmas in our own hands rather than in those of some otherworodly entity." Really? So, there is no supernatural, spiritual, otherworldly component to Christmas? Hmmm, it seems to me that a babe born in a manger might take issue with that assertion.
And the paintings actually do reflect that sentiment. Though Rockwell is credited with (or blamed for) depicting a purer, simpler time in the history of America, it was interesting to note the complete absence of any reference to the birth of Christ. This fact prevents me from giving it a higher rating, as I'm hesitant to be very enthusiastic about anything related to Christmas that ignores Christ in such a seemingly systematic way. It's not bad, just incomplete.
Nonetheless, the text of the introduction concludes by saying, "The paintings reproduced on these pages are about Christmas warmth and good cheer and the merry spirit Norman Rockwell wanted to pass on to us all." If that's what you want, then this is the book for you.

Book Description
A Holiday Countdown Calendar Illustrated by Norman Rockwell
Norman Rockwell (1894 - 1978) was perhaps America's best-loved and most popular 20th century illustrator. Behind the 24 windows on this calendar are some of his most famous illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post and The Country Gentleman.
Beginning on December 1, open a window each day through December 24, and see how America prepares for its most joyous holiday. Santa at Globe, pictured on the front of the calendar, illustrates Rockwell's gentle sense of humor as Santa, magnifying glass in hand, searches the earth for good boys. Freedom from Want and Freedom to Worship (behind windows 23 and 24) reveal a more serious Rockwell concerned with mankind's well-being.
The calendar measures 11 x 14 inches and comes with an attached easel stand. Its green frame is overprinted with a holly design. Twenty-three windows are in the frame; the 24th window--Freedom to Worship--is in Santa's globe to reflect mankind's desire for this fundamental right. Explanatory text and attributions are on the back of the calendar.
