Maryland, A Middle Temperament: 1634-1980 (Maryland Paperback Bookshelf)
ASIN: 0801859808 |
Book Description
From Antietam to Assateague, from Charles County's Tobacco Road to the mountainous Green Ridge Forest, the natural and historic sites of Maryland are among the nation's richest and most diverse. Now, the newly revised and updated edition of this widely acclaimed guidebook provides a complete, compact, and reliable companion for travel anywhere in the state.
First published as a project of the Works Progress Administration in 1940 and last revised for the 1976 bicentennial, Maryland: A New Guide to the Old Line State has been reorganized, rewritten, and completely updated. Personally traveling nearly all of the 5,000 miles covered, the authors combine first-hand experience with the latest scholarly research. The result is a unique new guidebook that tells the stories of Maryland's familiar people and places and of those often overlooked. Travelers can follow Piscataway Indian trails as well as John Wilkes Booth's escape route; visit the homes of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman as well as the mansions in Annapolis and Hampton; explore the sites of the Crisfield oyster boom and Georges Creek coal rush as well as those of John Brown's raid and the Battle of Antietam. The updated Guide also provides information on the many museums and visitor attractions in Baltimore, Frederick, and other Maryland cities.
Supplementing the more than 120 archival photographs are contemporary ones by photographer Edwin Remsberg which show the immensity of changes the state has undergone. Some photos literally look down the same street or road fifty or sixty years later, revealing dramatic urban development or subtle shifts in mood. Fifty new maps by cartographer Bill Nelson offer an accurate guide to every tour.
Previous editions of this book have been hailed as definitive touring guides to Maryland. Now once more revised and updated--and this time fully reorganized--Maryland: A New Guide to the Old Line State emerges as a freshly appealing guidebook for native, newcomer, and visitor alike.
From reviews of the 1976 edition:
"The guide is excellent. The tours are well-chosen." -- Washington Post
"An updated version of a guide to the state prepared by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. Detailed historical information accompanies driving and walking tours throughout the state." -- Baltimore Magazine

None better.......2004-05-28
Maryland is not a state many people think of when they consider a travel destination. That, of course, doesn't mean that Maryland isn't dense with cultural, historical, and natural treasures. This book covers all of them in fine detail, with an emphasis on the cultural and historical. It's not a travel guide per se, but more of an historical and cultural survey of the state's towns and institutions. That said, it covers them exhaustively. I lived in Maryland for almost 20 years, in Frederick County, and I've not found a better portrait of that beautiful part of the United States anywhere. Want to know this little, modest border state? Read this book.

From the Publisher
California Gold Country historian George Hoeper reveals what promises to be the final piece to the 100-year-old puzzle of the infamous stagecoach robber Black Bart. For over eight years the mysterious and very polite Charles Boles (alias Black Bart) plagued Wells Fargo & Co. with a string of at least 28 stagecoach robberies. During theis time, Bart, who operated on foot with an unloaded shotgun and never robbed stagecoach passengers or drivers, soon became something of a folk legend. Between robberies Bart would live the life of a boulevardier in San Francisco, hobnobbing with the city's best. In 1888 he disappeared from the Palace Hotel in Visalia, CA, never to be heard from again. Speculation has placed Bart in many places, including the Eastern Seaboard, Mexico and Japan, but according to information Hoeper has uncovered, it is more likely the legendary Black Bart met his demise in the dry Nevada wasteland and today rests in a sandy, unmarked grave.
Customer Reviews:
An extensively researched biography.......2007-08-07
Written by former reporter George Hoeper, Black Bart: Boulevardier Bandit is an amazing biography of one of California's most colorful historical figures. For over eight years, the indubitably polite and genteel criminal Charles Boles (alias Black Bart) preyed upon Wells Fargo & Co., enacting at least 28 stagecoach robberies - always on foot with an unloaded shotgun, and never demanding money from stagecoach passengers or drivers. Folk legends sprung up about Black Bart, who lived the life of a boulevardier in San Francisco, hobnobbing with the city's upper crust and writing poetry. In 1888, Black Bart disappeared from the Palace Hotel in Visalia, never to be seen again; Black Bart: Boulevardier Bandit offers information to suggest that Black Bart's final fate was not to settle in some distant land, but rather to lose his life in the dry Nevada wasteland and rest in an unmarked grave. "Black Bart may have been remorseful about not returning to his family, but if he was remorseful about turning to a life of crime, he never expressed it... It seemed, when questioned by reporters on the possibility of returning to his old ways, that his decision to abandon crime was based more on the fear of being caught again than on his rehabilitation and sorrow for his sins of the past." An extensively researched biography, enthusiastically recommended for anyone curious about one of California's most famous career criminals.
Black Bart, Boulevardier Bandit........2007-06-27
The book was well researched and well written. It provided good information that was used in "Black Bart Days" that was held on June 23 & 24th in Sutter Creek, California. I knew George Hoeper. He was an excellent historian and writer.
Great read, but a little flat at the end........2002-02-18
A fascinating book, which neither idolized Black Bart, or demonizes him either. Hoeper has really done his research. I never knew the full story about Black Bart before. This story fills in lots of the gaps that people don't know.
The only complaint I had was that at the end, Hoeper's "new evidence" that Black Bart died in Nevada is nothing more than a mild... "It might have been him." I expected some evidence. To this day, nobody REALLY knows what happened to Bart after he got out of prison.
Other than a mild letdown at the end, I still HIGHLY reccommend this book. A fascinating story of one of the Old West's most "larger than life" characters.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but lacking in grooming and body language.......2005-12-15
Based on other's recommendation prior to mine, I was looking forward to this as a definitive Miniature Schnauzer guide, but was somewhat disappointed in its lack of depth on certain subjects.
Not to say this is a bad book or has irrelevant information, but for new dog owners it has both its pros and cons.
As a plus, the explanation of the breed and characteristics is thorough, as well as picking a puppy and what to expect. This takes up the first 1/3rd of the book.
I found the grooming section to be great in some areas, but not so informative in others. There is very little information about cleaning ears (the proper and safe way) and why it's important (ear mites, bacterial odor, discharge, infection)....the best it says is pluck hairs and clean with rubbing alcohol in only two sentences. There should be much more on ear treatment. There is a section devoted to oral care which is good. This book more so concentrates on brushing the coat, baths, and clippering.
I would have also like to have seen more on body language as new owners may not always know what their dog is trying to communicate to them. This includes if the puppy or mature dog is not feeling well and what 'subtle' signs to look for.
There is a section describing ailments, parasites, and diseases...but not so much information on how to treat, other than: "See your vet." Duh!!
The only training really covered in this book is "house-breaking, which while important is one facet of a puppy/human relationship. I would have liked to see expanded discussion on other basics such as: Sit, Stay, barking, etc...
While I do recommend this book, it is a very high level look at the breed, but lacking in some detailed information on important day to day concerns of new dog owners.
Good Book, Could Have More Basic Info........2005-07-29
This book is pretty well done as pet books go. The photos and the quality of the paper are excellent. I was a little disappointed not to have an anticipated weight as a function of age or the weight range of the mature dog. I would like to have known how much and when (what hours of the day and how many times a day is best)to feed the puppy as he matures. I got all this info and more from the vet, but more detail in the book, of what to do and what to expect from the typical schnauzer from puppy to dog would have been helpful.
There is a lot of information about showing and breeding, but these are not my areas of interest. The section on Housebreaking and Training beginning on page 80, is well done and quite helpful.
Very helpful for a beginner.......2000-12-21
I bought this book because we were considering getting a new puppy and were interested in Miniature Schnauzers. I liked this book because it gave a brief history and evolution of today's dog which helped me understand more fully the personality of the Miniature Schnauzer. It also answered my key questions about selecting a puppy, as well as, crate training and housebreaking. The book will give you a general feel for what will be needed to appropriately care for this breed. I feel that after reading this book, I can better converse with breeders and am more informed. Since I haven't read any other books specific to the Miniature Schnauzer, I cannot compare to other sources. But I have found it more than adequate for my current need - preparation for purchasing a puppy. One final comment, the book has glossy pages and has plenty of supplemental color photographs. I particulary enjoyed the photographs of a variety of dogs of this breed - it helps me tremendously in the selection process.

Customer Reviews:
I LOVE IT !!!.......2007-07-22
I almost didn't purchase this book because I have several others on fabric books. Boy, would I have missed out! This books not only has beautiful photography but the examples are unique and the instructions flawless. One of my favorite sections is CHAPTER FOUR: THE GALLERY which shows so many examples of fabric books created by other artists for inspiration. In fact, I was so inspired that I couldn't wait to make a book for a dear friend's birthday using a combination of several different designs. This is not one of those books that you read and then put away. It stays on my studio table and I am already starting my next book. My fabric art library is pretty extensive but this book is by far the best when it comes to creating and embellishing fabric journals and books. I love it!
Create Your Own BEAUTIFUL journals.......2007-04-06
When I ordered this book, I thought it would be one of those books that had a beautiful cover but no real substance. This book is amazing, and I've already learned a lot in the short time I've owned it.
My gold standard for purchasing craft books!.......2006-10-07
This is an exceptionally well written and designed book. I'm impressed with the detailed instructions and accompanying illustrations, the photographs, and the layout. The author even anticipates questions that could come up for the reader/crafter during fabric book construction. I really appreciate this helpful style of writing. The fantastic photographs make it possible to see exactly what is being described. Even the order in which the chapters and sections are presented is well thought out.
This is destined to be one of my most treasured AND used books! In fact, I was inspired to get started as soon as I opened the book for the first time and saw the writer's/artist's work!
My absolute favourite guide to cloth journals.......2006-07-24
Pam Sussman's book covers the most basic design details - for example, page sizing - in a way that makes them interesting and inspirational. She goes on to more complicated, but necessary, techniques such as various edgings and bindings, with a natural, easy to follow progression of ideas and skills.
The book is, as one would expect, lavishly and beautifully illustrated with Sussman's work, but, unlike some other craft books, the illustrations are matched perfectly with the text and the photography displays techniques to perfection.
I have an embarrassingly large number of craft books, and this certainly numbers among the best.
So many ideas, so little time.......2006-04-09
I read this book cover-to-cover and was so enthralled by the illustrations and color photos of finished products that I had to start over again and try to focus on one project at a time. The How-Tos are presented in enough detail to help beginners through a myriad of strange and wonderful terms and tricks.

Find a better book.......2003-05-16
This book was a disappointment; the illustrations were not up to standard for a book of this kind, the writing was pedestrian and the printing too small for comfort. The writer had nothing new to offer on the topic. There are better books about balcony and roof gardens. Don't waste time on this one.
Balcony and Roof Gardens:.......2003-01-26
Lots of ideas but limited to outdoor decor (pots, furniture, accessories, color schemes, etc). Cutesy gets old after a while. Very little guidance on growing plants on balconies.
Balcony & roof Gardens.......2000-07-08
This book contains very creative ideas for gardening in small spaces. Its give us suggestions to create a very beautiful terrace, balcony, or even small pots. Jenny Hendy gives us many ideas to trelissing, installing water features, choosing the best basket. Its a stimulating book. The photos are so beautiful, that the book is recommended even to those who like, but don't have a garden. I think it's the best book for people who want to transform a small place into a beautiful garden.

Listen Up, Dads! Your Teen Is Talking to You!
As exasperating as parenting can be during these volatile years, your teen is depending on you for steady faithfulness, love, and guidance. And because teens often find words elusive and expression difficult, they probably haven’t told you the things they wish you somehow automatically knew. So let Dad, If You Only Knew... be your guide. Josh Weidmann, just out of the teen years himself, joins his father, James, to help dads understand where their kids are coming from. It’s a messy world they live in, and meeting them in it is no simple task. But knowing these essentials now makes fatherhood eight times easier!
Welcome to Your Teen’s World
It doesn’t matter if you have the most picture-perfect, ideal-in-every-way teen or one who’s in full-swing rebellion. That teen you love is a “riddle wrapped in a mystery.” No father can know what his teen is really thinking.
That’s why youth communicator Josh Weidmann teamed with his father, Jim, to help you bridge the gap. In Dad, If You Only Knew…you’ll get an open, honest glimpse inside the teen mind. Josh’s extensive research, combined with pointed direction from a father’s heart, provide you with the practical guidance you need to establish a healthy, thriving father-teen relationship. It’s one you desire, your teen needs, and you both can’t afford to miss.
Story Behind the Book
“The resounding cry of teens for their fathers rings in my ear. I have been speaking to youth for five years and the greatest void I see in teens’ lives is the one left by their dad. I am only twenty-three years old myself, and to this day I can say that my dad is the most influential man in my life. Because of his impact, I have asked him share in this book. We have written this message in hopes of helping dads reengage in the vital father-teen relationship.” —Josh Weidmann
Customer Reviews:
Dad, If you only knew.......2007-05-14
A light weight reminder of important things a growing daughter needs to see in and feel from her Dad.
Simple wisdom. Profound imact........2006-06-28
Well, I'm no dad, but I was once a teen, and I have a dad. And this is a message every father today needs to hear. Josh and Jim collaberate to offer us simple truths and guidance. Josh's work with youth all over the country, and his life of integrity, make him an insightful, powerful voice that's worth every father's listening ear (or, reading eye!).
Good Info.......2006-03-11
Josh Weidmann and his dad did a very nice job reminding us what it's like to be young and have questions about our dreams and nightmares in relation to our fathers. The large info is that we, as fathers, frequently go through parenthood oblivious to the real thoughts and fears our kids have. This book is a plain fact educater of those issues with good ideas on how to be a friend instead of a foe to your teen. I recommend the book with a caveat not to stop there but be willing to spend the time while it's still available with your kid and invest in that special love account so they may make withdrawals when the time needs.
Dynamic word for all Dads.......2005-08-11
If you're a dad, this book by Josh and Jim Weidmann is a MUST have for you. You will find the heart of your teen and the path to relationship with that teen. If you feel you are losing touch with the teen in your life (or if your just facing the teen years ahead), you NEED to read this book so you can meet your teen on first base and run the bases of life with them - not against them.
Great book by a great guy.......2005-08-05
Josh and Jim Weidmann have written one of the most challenging and encouraging books for dads. It's one thing to read a book from a young guy telling you how to parent, it's another thing to read a book written by an amazing father-son combination. As a youth pastor I highly recommed this book to any dad that wants to have a better relationship with their teenagers Great job guys!

Sol LeWitt "is to art as Bach was to music," says conceptual artist Adrian Piper, indicating LeWitt's seminal importance to both the theory and practice of contemporary art. LeWitt's creations are the direct embodiments of his theoretical writings, abstract principles that he develops with supreme integrity into physical form. Recognizing his key role in the minimalist and conceptual movements of the 1960s and '70s, New York's MoMA gave LeWitt a major retrospective in 1978. Sol LeWitt: A Retrospective and the accompanying exhibition organized by Gary Garrels of the San Francisco Museum of Modern bring us up-to-date.
During the '80s and '90s, LeWitt's work moved from a cerebral asceticism toward rich color and surfaces and a more explicit sensuality and expressiveness. Nearly 500 carefully chosen and well-reproduced photographs and drawings document this evolution. Together with a sampling of LeWitt's own pithy statements, lucid essays by seven of America's leading curators analyze his contributions to contemporary art. Typical of his methods and attitudes are his signature large-scale wall paintings, their sense of movement and bright bands of color making them among the most gorgeous of his works. While articulating the designs of the wall paintings and the concepts behind them, LeWitt does not paint them himself. He is generous in welcoming anyone else to give physical reality to his designs: "It would be a compliment," he says. Sol LeWitt is a beautiful and substantial book, and its range of illustration and depth of scholarship make it the definitive study of this highly influential artist. --John Stevenson
Book Description
This is the catalogue for a major retrospective organized by SFMOMA and celebrating the work of one of the most important and influential conceptual artists of the century. Sol LeWitt's career has been defined by a series of groundbreaking explorations into the basic building blocks of form and their relationship to philosophical and mathematical concepts. (Some critics have seen his work as visual manifestoes of the ideas of Descartes and Kant.) The fact is, however, that LeWitt's works transform these abstract principles and formulas into objects of beauty and grace, introducing elements of chance, intuition, or irrationality into the scientific systems that inspired their creation. While his thoroughly documented work of the 1960s was firmly fixed in the realm of conceptualism, his turn toward a more lyrical and sensual form of abstraction since then has never received adequate critical attention. This catalogue will chart the evolution of LeWitt's art from the sixties through to the present to show the enormous influence that his delicate balancing act between thought and form, order and disorder, has exerted on younger artists.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best on Sol.......2005-10-07
How do you rate a book on an artist without your subjective reaction to the art figuring in? I LIKE most of LeWitt's work. I LOVE certain pieces and genres. I love MOST of his wall paintings and drawings, I love SOME of his 3D stuff. Alot of his work, I am neutral about. This book covers it all. So, my response is luke warm. This book is in my library because of the work that I love, and I am a big enough fan of it that I want it, along with many other books on his work. There are several books and brochures on aspects of LeWitt's work. I recommend spending your money on those, FIRST. Most are out of print, but they CAN be found. Go to good bookstores with out of print books and search the internet.
Not just a coffee table book!.......2004-07-03
For those of you have seen the Sol LeWitt exhibits, this book captures many of those works and more. It offers background information and discussion.
However, this book goes beyond the exhibit installations and shows examples of installations around the world (outdoor structures, indoor wall murals, etc). These are things by an accomplished artist that are just not "out there" for you and I to view.
For those who don't know, Sol Lewitt is an amazingly talented and intelligent artist. Yes, intelligent. Almost autistic seeming at times, Sol Lewitt has a way of setting up circumstances for artistic study and then executing *every* *single* possibility as deemed by those circumstances. In one exhibit (shown in this book), Sol LeWitt examines and deconstructs all the possible forms of an open frame cube. In other examples (also in this book and at the exhibit) are line drawings examining the interaction of hundreds of overlapping circles emanating from various points on the canvas.
Much Sol Lewitt's work goes unnoticed (not much of a web presence, and hard to find posters, examples and pictures). This book helped fill in the gaps and offer a more rounded treatise of his work. Having owned it for months, it is still a pleasure to flip through this book and explore the concepts and discoveries that the artist has gone through. These discoveries are amazingly illustrated (few art books capture the entire series and the evolution of the artist like this one does).
I have enjoyed this book tremendously....it is a sizeable book that is worth the money and is well put together. Worth the purchase.
The Show Itself.......2000-12-24
I saw LeWitt's "Retrospective" show in Chicago and loved it.It's great that a book is offered of such a fabulous show that offers the diverse and evolving work of one of the best contemporary artists in the U.S. If the book is anything like the show, I highly recommend it as an enjoyable addition to anyone's collection of art books.
lewitt is rad.......2000-12-04
sol lewitt is my #1 favorite artist. i own many books of his work, and i must say that this is one of the most complete. its got everything. if you went to the sf moma and saw this exibition you wont be dissapointed by this book, it captures it the experience well. if you ever get the chance to see lewitts work in person, DO NOT MISS IT ! you will regret it ! in person these works are extremely powerful !
A Fine Catalogue of a Superb Exhibit.......2000-05-12
Sol LeWitt is an artist for whom the catalogue is both essential and apt. Because his conception and work mainly consists of a set of instructions that are then executed by other artists, the results can be displayed in many different places. While the literally enormous beauty of the wall paintings and drawings cannot be displayed in the book, that's not the point. The paintings and drawings themselves are temporary, to be whitewashed over when the exhibit 'moves' on. The catalogue provides the valuable service of capturing moments in time when the work was someplace, and brings that to the reader, along with excellent essays on the artist.
