Description:
Decreasing local ammonia air concentrations in a moderately polluted area in The Netherlands were accompanied by a rapid increase in nitrogen-sensitive species (acidophytes) and a decline of nitrogen-tolerant macrolichens (nitrophytes). This paper presents data on the relationship between nitrophyte abundance and species abundance for three ecological groups of epiphytic lichens: nitrophytes (positively correlated with ammonia), acidophytes (negatively correlated) and neutrophytes (which have an optimum at medium concentrations) and suggests ammonia dependent optimum curves for these groups. In this study neutrophytes were found to die-off massively at sites with a decrease of the ammonia air concentration over the period 1996-2003.

Customer Reviews:
Great travel guide.......2005-02-02
Unlike other readers, I couldn't be more impressed with the Moon book series, and this one was equally good. Accurately described our hotel in the same terms I would--although I had already booked the room before I bought the book. As far as describing camping sites accurately, I would have no idea. Camping in Hawaii never even occurred to me. Anyway, the Restaurant information was up to date and on point, and agreed thoroughly with each recommendation. Ditto for the outdoor and tourist information. This book is rich with information and is like a personal real life tour guide, with detailed historical and current information on each point of interest we visited. Great book--wouldn't go back to O'ahu without it.
Not what I expected and not good info for camping.......2004-03-11
I have used the Moon Handbook for New Mexico and various Lonely Planet guides with success and chose this book expecting the same quality. I was looking for solid information about alternative, independent travel. I intended to camp with a friend for most of my vacation. As a female traveler, I was particularly interested in accurate, unbiased, first-hand descriptions about campgrounds and safety in order to make good decisions.
The author described the camping situation poorly. Photos and descriptions lead me to believe that the county and state campgrounds would be beautiful, well maintained, and strict with the possibility of a few local families enjoying extended stays and who might resent tourists. Instead, I found the campgrounds to be not unlike roadside homeless shelters for meth addicts, particularly mid-week. Most were extremely close the main roads and often had the down and out living out of their cars in the parking lots. I'm not criticizing the locals or their situation, but knowing this before my trip would have changed my approach. Making the reader explicitly aware of such situations is critical to providing sage travel advice. Frankly, the author danced around this particular issue. When camping, there's a huge difference between having drug-free local folks who may resent visitors and dealing with drugged-out people who don't have a home. Nilsen also neglected to describe the campgrounds enough (e.g. road goes right by it...often have locals cooking in the bathroom and leaving lots of garbage...theft issues, safer on the weekends when families camp there, very safe and on-site caretakers, etc). After speaking with local friends we learned, that of the many campgrounds available, they would only recommend two or three for safety and aesthetic reasons. That's the type of advice I was seeking from the book but didn't receive.
We also tested out the guide on the opposite end of the accommodation scale. We ended up having to stay at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki since all budget and moderate hotels were booked. The author describes the rooms as "large and plush with the latest in adornment and amenities...nothing is skimped on when it comes to guest comforts...luxury." This review set me up to expect nothing short of a five-star hotel. In actuality, we arrived to extraordinarily dirty carpets in the halls and our small room, smoke in a non-smoking room, and Motel 6esque decor with no extra amenities. They may have had nice rooms somewhere in their building, but ours were 2-3 star quality with a 5-star view. This hotel was long in the tooth, which the book didn't recognize.
The chasm between some of my actual experiences and the author's descriptions made me lose faith in the information in the guide book 1/2 way through my trip. Had I wanted budget accommodations and just some simple activity suggestions, I think this would be a sufficient guidebook. It's thick with interesting information, but I can't recommend it as a reliable guide for a trip similar to my own.

Book Description
The history of modern Japan cannot be conceived without reference to its emperors. Japan became a modern nation during the reign of Emperor Meiji from 1868 to 1912, experienced an interlude for a good part of the reign of Emperor Taisho (1912-26), and then suffered defeat in war and rose from its ashes during the reign of Emperor Showa (Hirohito) from 1926 to 1989.
What role did the three emperors play in forming the policies of government and influencing the course the country would take? How did their personalities affect this role? What kind of men, in fact, were they? It is such questions as these that the author, Stephen S. Large, winner of the Ohira Prize for his book on Emperor Hirohito, attempts to answer.
From Emperors of the Rising Sun: Three Biographies the reader will not only gain an insight into the lives and characters of the three emperors but will also acquire an understanding of the inner workings of Japanese politics and a knowledge of the behind-the-scenes stories that determined the kind of nation that Japan would become. In short, Emperors of the Rising Sun is enjoyable as well as insightful, a delight for anyone interested in the history of Japan or the roles that emperors have played in modern times.
Book Description
Scores of bank heists and train robberies which plagued the nation during the roaring twenties, including the biggest train robbery in America's history, were pulled off by the daring Newton brothers. When interviewed at length, the brothers told a tale which is both dramatic and poignant and which, here now in print, grips the reader with its colorful picture of a bygone era. Here are the unembellished but often witty and spellbinding descriptions of their robberies from Texas to Canada, their flamboyant lifestyles when successful and, when unsuccessful, trenchant descriptions of the lawmen who caught them, and the prisons which punished them.
Customer Reviews:
Katie's Review of "The Newton Boys".......2001-05-21
I thouroughly enjoyed reading this book. In it it gave a fascinating first hand view into how the Newton brothers entered the life of bank and train robbers. The story was written based on a number of interviews with Willis and Joe Newton. The brothers discussed their feelings on how they were viewed, and how when there was ever any robbery, the Newton brothers were the number one suspects. I also enjoyed the humor in which the brothers were able to look back on thier escapades and run ins with the law. Some of the best parts of the book, I think, were when the Newtons described how they outsmarted the law, and escaped from prisons numerous times. The decriptions in the book provided vivid detail into life during the turn of the century. Each brother described in the book had very different interests and tastes, from Willis, a strong headed boy who was smart and determined,to Jess, the lazier of the brothers. In all, this book provided me with new insight into an era that has long since passed, and into the lives of criminals. I thought this book was an excellent read.

This book is quite old and looks that too but it's ok anyway and might be the best book available about rasboras. Book is not very ample but enough. It shows many rare rasbora species too that you can't find in many books.

Perfect for beginners.......2007-10-11
I did a lot of searching for a good jewelry making book for beginners. After reading many reviews and flipping through dozens of varieties at book stores, I chose this one. It's easy to read. It's divided into sections based on what you are looking for, and it has everything from basic tools to running a business. I have learned a great deal from this book, and am constantly using it for a quick reference. The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is because I think it should have a color picture for EVERY finished project in the book. There is a section of color pictures in the middle that shows some of the projects, but not all of them. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone starting out in jewelry making.
Jewelry making and Beading for Dummies.......2007-08-04
I checked out 50 jewelry making books from the library and this is one of only three that I decided I wanted to purchase for my personal book collection. It covers a huge amount of information in detail as well as giving good outside sources to go to for further instruction. This book has been a great resource for me and I highly recommend it for both beginers and more experienced jewelry makers.
Helpful, Hopeful, Happy.......2007-08-03
I have used this book so many times I actually have post-it flags on many of the pages. Whenever in doubt, I pull this book out. It has been most helpful in starting my beading experience and still find it most useful.

Customer Reviews:
Brief,Surprisingly Thorough Explanation of Evidence Supporting Natural Hormone Replacement.......2006-09-22
Uzi Reiss and Elizabeth Vliet provide more thorough discussions of this topic, but Jonathan Wright has written magazine articles for years and offers a concise review of the evidence for bio-identical hormone replacement. Wright focuses on bio-identical hormone replacement, resulting in a briefer discussion, since he spends less time discussing studies of horse estrogens and artificial progestins.
Misleading, sensationalized media coverage of large, poorly designed, ethically questionable estrogen replacement studies, including the Womens Health Initiative and Nurses Health Study continues to discourage women from obtaining safe effective natural hormone replacement. These large studies of thousands of women used the same dose of Premarin horse estrogens for study subjects, without regard to symptoms. Doseage was not adjusted for individual study patients. I doubt anyone would volunteer for a thyroid hormone replacement study, if they were informed individual hormone levels would not be measured and everyone would receive the same hormone dose, irregardless of whether they exhibited hypothyroidism symptoms. What is surprising about the large overpublicized Premarin/Progestin studies is that women were willing to submit themselves to these dangerous, poorly designed studies and that the media has succeeded so thoroughly, in misleading the public.
Wright provides excellent information on the estrone/estradiol and estriol ratio correlation with cancer. He also explains studies indicating bio-identical progesterone decreases cancer.
Wright explains why animal lovers will want horse estrogen (Premarin) removed from the market, when they learn how inhumanely horses are treated to obtain it. Your HMO prefers dangerous horse estrogens, because they are less expensive to produce.
Physicians treat individual patients, not study groups. When safe bioidentical hormone replacement dose is adjusted to the individual patient, using repeated testing and gradual dose increases, dramatic improvements in depression, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, interstitial cystitis, fibromyalgia and migraine often occur.
Florida Detox has been able to obtain all of these improvements, often in days, using bio-identical hormone replacement. These bio-identical hormones are sometimes almost the only medications, which highy allergic patients do not have adverse reactions to.
Steven Sponaugle
Research Director, Florida Detox
The small cost of and limited time required to read this book is well worth it!.......2006-09-20
Read this book. It will get you long on knowledge you really should know in short order. A HUGE misunderstanding has been created (on purpose, by the major pharmaceutical companies, or through the unfortunate ignorance of medical professionals) about synthetic, altered, equine, patented, profitable hormone replacement therapy (HRT) vs. Bio-Identical HRT. Everybody should know the difference and how it can affect their health.
Watch out..........2006-03-30
Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be. They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first. A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side. I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone. Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones. I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you.
This MAN does not understand estrogen at all........2005-08-08
This MAN does not understand estrogen at all. It is sad that so many women are apparently putting their health into his hands. The reason why so many women and good clinicians are avoiding products like Tri-est is because these products don't feed our bodies the necessary estrogens that our bodies actually produce from our ovaries. Giving women estriol and estrone just blocks our receptors from receiving the necessary and most important E2-estradiol. Our bodies will then metabolize the E2 into the others naturally. Research supports this aspect clearly. The other thing about this guy and his book is that he bounces everything he says off of premarin studies and does not keep the information flow consistent one way or another.
Most women getting on bio-identical hormones these days have never used premarin and want good research or clinical comparatives to support their choices with regards to bio-identicals. This book does not provide either good knowledge or research. Additionally, this book is quite disappointing for one that Amazon places so highly in their search engine.
Instead, I would recommend Wiley's book for the radical approach to understanding what it is we actually want to achieve with our bio-identicals, and Reiss's book for good information on how to monitor ourselves when using bio-identicals. However, Reiss, (another boy doctor) is also a proponent of Tri-est, probably because its just easier for him to prescribe.
Once our female clinicians have really worked out the bio-identicals that are working well for us, then we will all have great data to support our choices. In the meantime, avoid this book.
NOW HEAR THIS all menopausal women: good food for thought!.......2002-09-26
As both a female and one over 45 who is in the menopausal phase of her life, this book is incredibly helpful because it gives one an alternate view, very different from what AMA and FDA guidelines stipulate. We are in control of our bodies and can ultimately make our own decisions, but only with enough subjective information to go by. Many physicians may not be open to natural hormone replacement, but there are many who are. Women just need to read this book, among others, to become better educated about their choices regarding controlled substances being ingested into the body.

Christopher Wilmarth: Drawing into Sculpture (Harvard University Art Museums)
ASIN: 0691113599 |
Book Description
Christopher Wilmarth delighted the world with light-filled sculptures of glass and steel that were deeply poetic in their moods and extraordinarily rich in their modernist heritage. But in 1987, at the peak of his career, a long struggle with depression ended tragically for Wilmarth. The internationally acclaimed artist committed suicide at age 44, and his work largely fell from the public view.
Now, Wilmarth's legacy is recaptured in this beautifully written, richly illustrated book by art critic, historian, and poet Steven Henry Madoff. The first in-depth look at Wilmarth's extraordinary life as an artist, the book explores both the light and the darkness that underlie his work. Madoff offers a critical overview of the artist's career, examining the sculptor's response not only to historical masters such as Cézanne, Brancusi, Matisse, and Giacometti, but also to the art world of his times--particularly the dominant influence of Minimalism. Using the newly created Wilmarth archive at Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum, Madoff anchors this moving interpretation with the sculptor's own writings unearthed from journals, student notebooks, artist sketchbooks, and letters.
Madoff draws as well from interviews, articles, and poems that Wilmarth published in his lifetime, along with the body of criticism covering Wilmarth's development over the years. Acclaimed biographer Nancy Milford contributes a poignant memoir of her years of friendship with the artist, and Fogg associate curator Edward Saywell offers a powerful selection of Wilmarth's writings. The sculptor's romantic outlook, his gorgeously light-infused art, and his dramatic decline into work of harrowing darkness are sensitively examined in a book that reintroduces Christopher Wilmarth's sculptures and graphics to the contemporary art audience.
