Beautiful waterfalls... where??.......2006-09-06
Hmmm...Loved the subject matter, but how perplexing to use those waterfall locator maps!
Ohio Waterfalls.......2006-05-08
Ohio doesn't get the respect it deserves.
Ohio is a state of deep woods, flower-spangled prairies, intimate and mysterious gorges, vibrant neighborhoods, delightful restaurants, and sophisticated music, but you'd never know that from driving through on the turnpike. When my job took me to Ohio twenty years ago, I cursed my fortune and wished that I'd gone instead to Colorado, but I've discovered the delights of this state, and now I delight in showing them off to others. Often times I surprise even the natives of this state when I show one of them a sublime gorge or a prancing waterfall, only a few miles from his birthplace, that he was ignorant of for fifty years.
This book is a step in the right direction. Ms. Karle has done a lot of research and uncovered most (not all) of the falls I've located over the past twenty years. (She even located Forty-foot Falls, which took me several years to find!) She's located many unappreciated gems like All Saints Falls (the first one in the book). The photos in her book are serviceable although not spectacular. Go for yourself to see how beautiful these waterfalls really are.
Unfortunately, her directions are often hopelessly vague. For example, her directions to All Saints Falls says to "walk over the small road bridge," whereas in fact you should NOT cross the road. On page 17 we read "Directions: Take SR 252 and bear left. Turn right onto Water Street then another right into David Fortier Park." No starting point is listed, so it's impossible to know whether "bear left" means to go north, south, east, or west!
She also gets carried away in her forward, where she blindly repeats long-discredited creationist propaganda. She claims that "To determine the age of the fossil [scientists] look at the layer of the rock it is in. To then determine the age of the rock layer, they look for what fossils are found in the layer. This is called Circular Reasoning [sic]." This would indeed be circular reasoning, but it's not the reasoning scientists use to date rocks. (This is creationist claim CC310 in Mark Isaak's "Index to [and refutation of] Creationist Claims.") She also claims that "The Grand Canyon is a perfect example of how it was formed within an hour and not millions of years ago." (This is Isaak's claim CH581.)
In conclusion, this book is not great but the alternative (namely nothing) is worse. Ohio deserves better.

WEll I have found this young womens book to be enchanting. I have almost every waterfall book ever published and have traveled this world over to many times. I have seen that each writer has their own unique style of writing and this author is no different. To stand here and condemn her book would be sad as some has done. Must not be very good photographers. I've seen her book in COLOR and it is absolutely beautiful. Her use of centering and position and use of lighting are quite well done. It is difficult to tell in a black and white book. This book was well written and I can see alot of research went into this book as I'm originally from Ohio and never knew so many falls existed in this state. This is a hiking book people not a fancy coffee table book were the pictures have to be beautiful. This is a unique hiking book as this author tells you the seasons to see the falls at their best, the height of the falls, the distance to the falls(for us older people who don't wish to walk as far), and if I wish to go on a harder hike or not,and best of all if there is a restroom available or not!!!! Some hiking books don't even do that! She gives you the wonderful maps of the surrounding area of the falls, NOT A STREET map as some hateful people mention. I understand that 1st books is a vanity publisher. She endeavored to publish this herself and vanity publishers don't print on the best paper or print as clear as say the falcon guide books do. Use this book for YOUR love to see a waterfall and a good hike. Do not judge this book on all its merits. I have used this book and not once got lost in her directions. Her use of scripture tells me she had no research for the falls at hand and thought to put something clean to ponder as you walk to that particular falls. If you don't like the "bible" and what it stands for, ignore that part of the writing then an enjoy the book for WHAT IT WAS WRITTEN for. A HIKING BOOK OF waterfalls. At least this is different than any of the other hiking waterfall books in my collection. Simple, well written and right to the point. At least she has put a picture with almost every waterfall. Some hiking waterfall books there aren't pictures for. Just a bunch of words. I give this author an A+ for her effort in giving the world a book of hikes to a surprising number of waterfalls whether big or tiny in this state of Ohio.
Save your money - this book is a very poor resource.......2005-11-08
This is a disappointing book:location maps with no cities, roads or even corresponding page numbers, out of context driving directions with no meaning unless you know the area.
The maps to the waterfalls are unprofessional quality - highly pixelated images and often illegible text.
I am passionate about waterfalls and travel all over the country to photograph them. Its obvious the author is also passionate about them, but it is a shame that was not translated into a usable guide. I have a number of waterfall books from many states, this is by far the poorest in providing directions.
The author also uses the book as her own religious platform, to the point of questioning the validity of science and geology rather than letting people appreciate the waterfalls as they are. If you don't want an unexpected sermon and worthless maps, do not buy this book!
Not so impressed.......2005-08-22
I'm a waterfall nut and have purchased waterfall books for other states and I have to say that I was very dissatisfied with this book. There's 109 waterfalls but the book does not account for all of them. There's a numbered map before each of the 4 sections of Ohio but there's no way to tell what number goes with which waterfall. And, some of the directions to the waterfalls were unclear. So, if you purchase this book, make sure that you get a street map.

Book Description
Two years after the 1685 French embassy to Siam led by Chaumont and Choisy, King Louis XIV sent a second embassy to Phra Narai led by the two envoys La Loubère and Céberet, and a third unofficial emissary, Father Tachard, who was working behind the scenes and often against his colleagues. Accompanying them were expeditionary troops to be installed in Bangkok and Mergui once a Franco-Siamese treaty could be negotiated.
This volume conveniently presents, in English translation, three important accounts of that second French embassy to Siam in 1687: Tachard's Second Voyage, published in 1689; Céberet's Journal du voyage de Siam, published in 1992; and Tachard's "Relation," an unpublished account of the tempestuous journey back to France.
Beginning with a listing of the dramatis personae and a general introduction to set the stage, Michael Smithies introduces each of the three accounts in turn, providing background information about the authors and their times before presenting the relevant sections of their texts. Written from different perspectives, these key documents, taken together, form a fuller picture of the events and issues of this embassy. The volume ends with an appendix on La Loubère, including the text of his many brief references to the embassy in his comprehensive work, The Kingdom of Siam.

The Senator's Daughter

Book Description
2 cassettes / 3 hours
Read by Kate Burton
Full of the menace of long-hidden secrets and the darkness of the human heart,
I'll Be Watching You is a chilling tour de force by Victoria Gotti, author of the critically acclaimed legal thriller The Senator's Daughter.
Rose Miller is a best-selling novelist with a seemingly perfect life: a devoted and wealthy husband with his eye on a gubernatorial nomination, a splendid country mansion, and an adorable daughter. But Rose has something else too--a shadowy stalker who sends her blood red roses with threatening notes that hint at Rose's hidden past . . . a life she thought she had buried forever.
Who is stalking Rose? Nearly everyone is a suspect. It could be Dario, her ruthless and controlling publicist, whose crush on Rose is getting a little out of hand. Or Dimitri, her devilishly handsome ex-lover, now a millionaire hotel baron with his own reasons for wanting revenge. Or even her own father-in-law, James Miller, a sinister man who will stop at nothing to protect his family's secrets.
Terrified, Rose enlists the help of a veteran detective, John Falcone, who begins to uncover a shocking pattern of threats and violence, all of which seem to center around the beautiful celebrity author and her powerful, wealthy family. When Rose's best friend is murdered in a bizarre ritual drawn from a scene in one of Rose's own novels, Falcone's suspicions about her "perfect life" become even deeper, and the terror Rose thought she could hide begins to spin out of control.
Despite her desperate efforts to protect herself and her innocent daughter, Alexis, Rose finds herself being pulled deeper and deeper into a web of old hatreds and new rivalries that threaten first her happiness, then her life.
Customer Reviews:
Great Thriller!!.......2003-01-06
I tell ya, I got this book at B&N on their bargain book rack for [a good price] a couple years ago. I took it home seeing it was a stalker thriller and knowing I would love it. I was right!! This book had everything, suspense, fright, mystery, a twisted plot, and even romance (even though I am not fan of any kind of romance novels this worked!). Rose, Dimitri,.....you will just have to read it and find out for yourself. The ending is something great, which alot of books lack and are usually a letdown. I am going to go out and buy her first book "The Senator's Daughter" or maybe I can find it online for a good price!! Thank you Miss Gotti for giving me a great and entertaining book to read (since I LOVE to read!!). Buy it Buy it Buy it!
"I'll Be Watching You" - Great Storytelling!.......2000-06-26
You may say what you like about Victoria Gotti as a writer, I enjoy her books a great deal. Like millions of other Americans, I find cross country airplane trips to be an opportunity to lose myself in the kind of torrid pot boilers one's former English teacher or mother-in-law would tsk tsk over (in my case, she's both!), and to forget, for awhile, the rigors of modern literature (read, at least in part, so I'll be able to maintain my educated bourgeois status in conversation with my peers). A recent trip from Seattle to Baltimore and back was just such an occasion, and I was grateful to have Ms. Gotti's second book, "I'll Be Watching You," along as a companion on this flight. Okay, so she's not Jane Austin, or even Joan Didion. Victoria Gotti is, however, a great story-teller whose books are a welcome addition to the ranks of airport fiction. I mean, okay, I started "I'll Be Watching You," as I had her first book, "The Senator's Daughter," with some quibbles about the writing. The juxtaposition of the word "lovely" with the markedly unlovely word "flaccid" as in "her lovely, flaccid body" made me pause for a few seconds, for example. The repeated use of the word "shattered" seemed peculiar on occasion (some things just don't shatter when they break). But it was not far into the book that Gotti the story teller took over - I started hearing, and appreciating her voice, as if we were sitting together in her sun-lit study with its massive Ethan Allen oak desk, she in her Donna Karan loungewear, me in my casual Armani, sipping amareto from Damask cups.... she resumes her story as the late afternoon drifts on, her piercing hazel eyes growing distant as the story takes hold and I put my feet up and lean back into the luxury of the Eames padded leather chair , lost in her voice, the slowly setting sun now spreading a golden glow over the palatial grounds of the surrounding estate.... The world of the rich and powerful is an intriguing place when seen through Victoria Gotti's eyes, and I was delighted to place my advanced order for her new book, "Superstar," today - the plot description sounds great! I can't wait for the next time I fold my lanky six and a half foot frame into an airplane seat obviously designed for people about half my size, and, with my Diet Coke and my bag of Planter's peanuts arrayed on the plastic tray in front of me, I can dive into a totally different world, suffused with comfort, luxury, passion.... and terror!
A very interesting book.......1999-10-20
I found the book to be easy to read, and the ending was one that could be let to one's imagination. . I was not totally taken in by the book, but was still glad that I had read it. If you like captivating love stories that touch your heart, you might read stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. If you liked this book you will also love Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a manuscript more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful."
"Stolen Moments " which is reminiscent of "Love Story" is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. Like"Love Story" it is about a dying woman who has found true love. It is the love story of the nineties."
Very entertaining... Suprised to know she could write.......1998-12-12
I too read the Senators Daughter first which prompted me to purchase her second book. I have been amazingly suprised at how well she wrote. Although either book may never be a #1 seller, both books were very entertaining and very fast reading. A great "airplane" or "wasting a weekend" away reading book.
If You Like Thrillers..........1998-07-20
...You'll Enjoy I'LL BE WATCHING YOU!
And if you read THE SENATOR'S DAUGHTER and wondered if Victoria Gotti was a one-book wonder, you'll be pleased to know that that first hit wasn't an accident. This savvy, articulate lady really CAN create interesting characters and tell a dynamic tale.
She has woven an intricate tale that, at one point, I was sure I had a figured out and then two chapters later changed my mind. Such mental gymnastics make for an intriguing read and, I hope, a sensational movie.
I also like the way she incorporates "real" New York into her story...and how she's left the Rose story open for the possibility of a sequel.

The Gotti Diet : How I Took Control of My Body, Lost 80 Pounds, and Discovered How to Stay Fit Forever
ASIN: 1568760655 |
Amazon.com
Who better to write a mystery novel about the mob than a mobster's daughter? In her first novel, Victoria Gotti, daughter of the Teflon Don, John Gotti, dishes up a heady brew of sex, violence, and murder necessary in the genre. The heroine of The Senator's Daughter, Taylor Brooke, is as beautiful as her name implies, and smart, too. She is an attorney assigned to defend a young African American man accused of making a hit on a union boss and racketeer. Taylor soon finds herself torn between the dead man's shady but undeniably attractive son, Michael Sessio, and her former lover, John Stark, who happens to be the DA assigned to prosecute this case. Before the book's end, Gotti has embroiled her heroine in the ruthless doings of a powerful politician, the mysterious death of her own mother years before, and the murderous activities of her psychotic ex-husband. All this is more than enough to keep both Taylor Brooke and the reader busy for some time to come.
Customer Reviews:
I couldn't put it down!!!.......1999-08-27
This book was so good I could not put it down. I really enjoyed the plot and Taylor Brooke. I really like the book but I would have enjoyed it even more if some of the relationships were more developed.
Gripping.......1998-12-16
I read this book on a sailing vacation last summer. I wound up dropping the anchor, sitting there for five hours and reading it from cover to cover. A compelling tale of greed, lust, money and twisted family ties. Highly recommended. Victoria Gotti has made a name for herself.
Exciting! You keep wanting to read one more page ..........1997-05-12
This book, Victoria Gotti's firt novel, is fast moving, you never get bored and you want to keep on reading even when your eyes are giving up. The charactrers are intersting and believable and the plot too realistic. You have to wonder how many innocent people have been put in situations like this without anyone to help them or anywhere to go
Book Description
To successfully keep cockatiels, owners need to know about proper housing, health care, feeding, and training--all of which are provided in this useful book. Ideal for beginners or those thinking about sharing their life with one or more of these friendly birds.
Customer Reviews:
guide to owning a cockatiel.......2007-05-12
great book! excellent photography, and highly recommended for those who own or those who are interested in aquiring a cockatiel.
OK but not up to date.......2001-05-18
Ms. Barrie has a good understanding of cockatiel personalities, color mutations, and training, and this is an OK guide in that regard. However, the book is very outdated regarding diet: Other than the all-important fresh greens, it recommends nothing but seeds, a diet that is guaranteed to greatly reduce your cockatiel's potential lifespan of 30 years and diminsh his health and comfort by leading to illness. This can also be costly and heartbreaking for you.
Seeds are necessary for small birds because they contain enzymes they can't get anywhere else--but a tablespoon a day is plenty. Pellets, table foods, cooked grains and legumes, and fresh fruits and veggies should make up the other 90% of the diet. The book also recommends offering grit, which is no longer recommended by vets and other experts in avian health.
For friendly, accurate, and scientifically current guidance, check out "Birds for Dummies" by Dr. Brian Speer, an excellent avian vet.
Cockatiel Answers.......2000-12-23
This is an excellent book for a new Cockatiel owner. The photos are great, the text is easy to follow. There are a lot of useful tips that make it easy to take care of your new pet. The bok was just what I was looking for.
Basic, but not the best.......2000-05-14
If you are looking for a Cockatiel book that is very basic, straight to the point, and somewhat blunt, then this is a good choice for a book. But for those who like substance, you might want to try another. Even though you can receive a broad point of view on how to care for your Tiel, I felt that this book just wasn't what I was looking for; too basic. But this book does come with a good explanation on variety of cocktiels, and I absolutely adore the pictures she used.
Customer Reviews:
Good pointers, great photos, smartly written.......2007-05-30
This book is well thought out, with brilliant photos and well-expressed text. It covers a huge span of metalworking techniques, and is great for one to see an explanation and in a fit of lightbulb-comes-on say to himself, "Oh, so THAT'S how they do that!" It conveys lots of concepts and ideas, and although it is well worthwhile as a text for the beginner, it is ideal for someone with some degree of practical working background, since you need to be able to understand the concepts to make full advantage of its possibilities. The wide array of photos express plenty of complex concepts suitable to stimulate the mind of the experienced metalsmith. I recommend this book to anyone short of a professional who wouldn't be buying a book anyway.
Review of the practical applications.......2007-03-16
The book could benefit by directing more attention on how to do things rather show casing the efforts of others.
Love the Book Fundamentals of Metalsmithing.......2007-03-08
Thank you for this amazing book! This book was recommended to me by a friend who does metal work jewelry and she told me that this was the only book one needed to get the job done! I believe she was right! Even a simpleton like my self can follow it! It's Amazing!
A Beautiful and Current Classic .......2007-02-24
This version of "Jewelry Fundamentals" had beautiful pictures, thorough explanations, and step-by-step directions. The book would be useful for beginning and experienced jewelers alike. The directions were thorough and explicit, and easy to read. Highly recommend. SE
Disturbing pictures of irrelevant, already made, jewelry.......2007-02-23
Was looking for a step-by-step instruction book.
This presentation of the jewelry making techniques is thoroughly disturbing my focus by throwing in large, space-waisting pictures that has nothing to do with the process I am trying to learn.
The text concerning the techniques lies in big flakes between these. At the bottom - and disturbed by page shifts! - lies the descriptions.
Tip: why not focus on the jewelry making processes and put in more pictures concerning them? Put the already made jewelry in a section in the back, with an "Example" pointer from the jewelry making instruction.

Great Old Fashioned Advice!.......2007-10-02
Call me ignorant and sheltered but I had not heard of John Rosemond until my oldest was 4 1/2 years old. I wish I had had this book when she was going through the terrible twos. Anyway, I think it is the best parenting book out there. I recommend it to all of my friends.
Since reading this book I have become much more strict with my children. The result is that my kids and I enjoy each other so much more. I no longer yell or nag. I am calm and in control. I outline the rules to my children and when they break them there are consequences. Since I consistently follow through with the consequences the rules are rarely broken. There is peace in our house and much fewer tantrums from children and adults alike. Thanks a million Mr. Rosemond!
Just one aside regarding baby care, I think that "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" by Tracy Hogg is far better and more conprehensive for information regarding the first year of life!
John Rosemond knows of what he teaches........2007-05-31
Read the original Parent Power a dozen years ago to give me a leg up on my two kids now 16 and 19. You have the power! Not for the faint-of-heart or 'helicopter parents'. Bought the new version for my wife to help her become better at mnaging our two new ones age 4 and 6. Second time around and loving it!
If you read and used the book 'On Becoming Baby Wise' this book is for you!
good children.......2007-02-11
I bought this book for one of my children who just had a child...I hope they use it as I think Rosemond is spot on!!! He has such common sense advice and if used you will have responsible and well liked children who will turn into responsible well liked adults!!
To much emphasis on daycare!.......2007-01-12
I agree that children are not the center of the family. I also think that God gave them to us to guide and teach and you cannot do that when they are in daycare!!! I don't agree with Dr. Rosemand on the day care issue, but I did find some helpful tips in this book!
Not so thinly veiled Evangelical Fundamentalism.......2006-10-23
What is so sad for me is that John Rosemond has many excellent interventions for children yet he view's self-esteem as demonic and nefarious. While I can use some of his ideas I warn readers of his narcissistic musing about what he interprets as biblical. A mix of well-grounded advice and psychological immaturity.

Book Description
Joseph Cornell (1903-1972), the American assemblage artist, was a quirky but passionate collector of bric-a-brac who used trinkets, scraps of paper, paint, and lots of glue to arrange imaginative worlds inside glass-front wooden boxes and frames. While evoking the Victorian era and childhood pastimes, Cornell developed a collage technique that radically transformed the way art could be made--and seen--for generations to come.

An excellent Overview That leaves you wanting more.........2007-03-30
Joseph Cornell's work which I just recently discovered, appeals to me a great deal, especially since I tend to work in the same area(mixed media) this small book is a fine, easy to read introduction to the unusual late artist and his oddly enchanting artwork. Like I said,it is an overview.so if you want to learn more about Cornell and his works, their are many books that go into more detail. However, This book is a good place to start.
