"This is a Stick Up!".......2007-08-14
"Here they come down that dusty road, and muddy bend; Man and woman welded in crime, together they lived and together...they died. Who else could it be?; But good ol' Bonnie and Clyde!"
The book entitled, "Bonnie and Clyde A Twenty-First-Century Update" by James R.Knight (with Jonahtan Davis )is... "A killer of a book!"
This is a superbly written and researched book. James R. Knight is too young to have ridden along with them, at least in this life. However, his knowledge and interest in this gun toting couple makes me wonder, where he may have been in his last life time?
His writing is informative, easy to read and follow, and...extremely descriptive. In addition, the book is a photographic library in itself!
Sometimes, I could almost hear the heavy "barking" of Clyde's "BAR" and watch the black exhaust clouds rise from the tail pipe of his get-away, 1934 Ford sedan.
Frank Hamer does not appear to be as powerful a figure as he was portrayed in the 1967 movie with Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty. Although, a central figure in orchestrating the couple's final demise, the initial credit seems to flow toward a little known figure of the ambush group listed as, Officer Prentis Oakley.
Author, James Knight also gives the reader what Paul Harvey used to say on his radio program: "and now you know ... the rest of the story."
Knight follows through with information on the fate of each actor who ever played any part on the stage of "Bonnie and Clyde."
A great job Mr. Knight(and Mr. Davis)! When can we expect another publication???
A Superb Read.......2007-06-08
Other than the books written by John Neal Phillips, this is the best of the Bonnie and Clyde books. Well researched, balanced viewpoint, great photos. A superb read.
A must read if you're interested at all in Bonnie & Clyde........2006-11-10
I've read many good books on the subject of Bonnie & Clyde, and even though the 1967 movie was far from accurate historically, it is one of my all time favorite movies. This book does the best job I've found of setting some of the inaccurate facts straight. I live less than 30 miles from Dexter Park, where the gang was ambushed, and I find it fascinating to finally read so many details of what transpired during those events. If this subject interests you at all, then this book is an absolute must read.
Exhaustive research on Bonnie & Clyde.......2005-07-26
This new book on Bonnie & Clyde does greatly to enhance the lives and times of the Barrow gang from start to finish. It is laden with new photo's and research and the authors obviously spent a lot of time and money to travel to the various sites mention in the book. I would rate this as one of the best, if not the best book on the lives and crimes of the Barrow gang. Knight and Davis are great researchers and have done an outstanding job with bringing to life the deeds and misdeeds of Bonnie and Clyde and their partners in crime. I would greatly recommend it to anyone interested in this genre.
Mike Koch, author of The Kimes Gang
The whole nine yards.......2005-04-03
Best book written on Bonnie and Clyde in regards to telling their entire story from A to Z. If you only read one book on this desperate duo this is the one.

easy, delightful doggie & cat treats.......2000-03-31
As a patry chef I think this book is excellent, easy to follow, if the person doesn't have experience baking they don't need to worry it shows step by step everything they need including ingredients, utensils, how to bake the treats, storage, and places where you can get some of the uncommon ingredients. The only thing the I think the author missed out in showing the final product with pictures, so we can see the final product in a full consistency. But if you like to eat a good cookie for yourself just think the your dog or cat they would to, and this book will show you how.
Book Description
It’s the classic, world’s bestselling paper airplane book, grounded in the aerodynamics of paper and abounding with fun. The World Record Paper Airplane Book raises paper airplane making to a unique, unexpected art. This new edition boasts four brand-new models: Stiletto, Spitfire, Galactica, and Sting Ray. Added to its hangar of proven fliers—including Valkyrie, Hammerhead, Vortex, Condor, Pterodactyl, and, of course, the famous World Record Paper Airplane—that makes twenty airworthy designs. Each is swathed in all-new, attention-grabbing graphics and is ready to tear out, fold, and fly. There are at least five models for each design and all-important instructions for how to adjust and throw each plane for best flight.
But the planes are just the beginning. The book features tons of cool information on aerodynamics, competitions, and designing your own high-performing models. Readers will learn why paper airplanes fly (and why they crash), the history of Ken Blackburn’s world record, and how to organize and win contests. Also included is a flight log and pull-out runway for practicing accuracy.

better than recycling.......2007-06-30
I have too much scrap paper. I was going to throw it out, but at the last moment I decided instead to buy The World Record Paper Airplane Book. Taking a sheet of scrap off the pile, I was able in a minute or two to make an Interceptor, which when launched sailed across the room and slid behind the bookcase. Scrap problem solved. I also discovered that if you make The Hornet with an extra fin in the back it boomerangs back to you when you throw it. Good times.
Still picking up the paper.......2007-02-20
I am still finding paper airplanes in various places throughout my house 3 months after giving this to my son.
how cool is that?!!.......2007-01-10
The World Record Paper Airplane Book is a really great item for those hard-to-buy-for preteen boys. my son received an earlier version of it some years ago and he had a ball with it (so did his older brother). they made and flew every plane in the book and then were inspired to invent their own designs. anyway, they liked it so much that i got the new version for my nephew for Christmas, and he, too, just loves it. kudos to the authors!
Seems to me a good book.......2005-09-23
I have not used it yet but based on the first glance, I belive we will be able to get a great benefit out of this purchase.
UP, UP, AND AWAY!.......2005-03-31
Few of us have not taken a piece of paper, creased a few strategic folds, and then lofted our paper plane into the air. For those of us who still enjoy the fun, mischief, and creativity involved in such a pastime, here's the perfect book.
Aerospace engineer Ken Blackburn and mechanical engineer Jeff Lammers have mixed science and innovation to give us everything needed.
Containing 100 full-color, ready-to-fold paper airplanes ranging from the simple to state-of-the-art streamlined, this colorful volume enables us to form the Basic Dart, do loops with the Stunt Plane, and even propel a replica of the NASA space shuttle.
In addition to the planes, the well executed text offers a plethora of information about aviation and flying. There's even a section on how to stage contests, and a flight log is included.
Up, up and away!

It's the simple things in life that give the most pleasure.......2001-03-24
When I saw this book I had to have it. It has 10 preprinted pages to make one each of the 10 designs in the book. Easy to follow instructions that produced really cool planes! I did all the folding(my boys are only 5 & 7)and they did all the flying. Two weeks later all the planes are still intact-they have held up to a lot of flying. The only thing that kept me from scoring it 5 stars was I tried to duplicate the folds on plain paper and since you don't have the dotted lines to follow the patterns are more difficult to accomplish. Possible-but difficult.

Lots of GREAT parenting advice.......2007-09-21
This book is great for first time parents. This is my most referenced parenting books and I have several! I kept checking this out from the library before I finally bought my own copy. You won't regret buying this one.
Great Book for Us Grammies.......2006-03-13
Just finished the final chapter and although my parenting of "lovely's are now with my grandchildren, you can always learn something new. The recipe's and the "how to" approach is consistent and right on! All the advice on how to deal with a child sleeping through the night helped out my daughter immensly. The nannies are great and their knowledge is superb. I highly recommend this book to new mothers, new dads, grammies and granpies - everyone who needs "expertise" on handling all the new situations that come with the title of parent.
A Neccesity for Every Parent!.......2006-01-31
This book has been incredibly helpful to my husband and I, we purchased it after hearing one of the nannies on a morning weekly radio show in Minneapolis. The nanny gives out advice to parents each week and we always enjoy listening to what she has to say. We have 3 kids under 5 and really value the advice of British nannies, this books encourages a routine and schedule, fresh meals and plenty of sleep for kids (and parents). Since reading the book we have introduced these things and have seen incredible changes, our kids are so much happier, they are now going to bed earlier, helping me out in the kitchen, and our bedtime routine is so much easier. Thank You nannies.
The best!.......2006-01-17
I have read every baby book there is, and this definitely rates in the top 5. It's nothing earth-shattering or totally new, but there are great examples and good real-life ideas to use with your kids. Plus, it's entertaining to read.
A new kind of childcare book- all the answers I need and fun to read.......2005-10-20
My kids are 2, 5 and 7 yrs. I actually bought this book because I saw that it had a chapter on school.
My 5 yr old had a rocky first week at school and I was really worried. I read the school chapter first and the first thing it did was it made me feel better. The book reminded me that starting school is another new experience for my son and he needs time to get used to it, which of course on one level I did know but reading it made me believe it. I started using the "Goodbye Routine" and it definately resulted in less tears than the day before. I kept doing it and things have improved. The school chapter is really helpful and I am now using their homework advice for my 7yr old and Hooray what a difference!
I had just accepted that with 3 kids weekday mornings were always going to be rushed and stressful. This book has helped me to change all that and it was not difficult to do. Now most mornings we actually all sit down to eat breakfast together and I don't have to scream at the kids to turn the TV off.
I am also using the strategies on improving communication with all my kids but especially with my two year old who likes to say no to everything I ask her to do. I didn't realize that I was inviting her to say no by giving her too many choices.
My only complaint is that Nanny Wisdom does not cover Potty Training. I am just about to start that with my 2 year old and I had a hard time with my other kids. I would like to know how the nannies do it. Also, the recipes have been so popular in our house that I wish there were even more of them in the book.
Nanny Wisdom is it is actually fun to read which is an added bonus. The book has little stories about the kids the nannies have looked after and experiences they have had in their different jobs. It makes you understand how experienced and caring these nannies are.
After reading this book I really trust their advice 100%. I always say to my husband now, The Nannies say this or The Nannies say that!!
I loved this book because it covers such a big range of parenting problems and situations and really gives parents great answers. It has helped me more than any other parenting book I own (I did like What to Expect when my kids were newborns and I do like Pocket Parent). I know it will keep on helping me as it has so much in it. I am so glad I stumbled across this book in my parenting travels!

Simple Acts of Faith: Heartwarming Stories of One Life Touching Another.......2006-02-28
My husband borrowed a copy of this from his doctor's waiting room and so fell in love with it that he promptly asked me to buy a dozen copies so that we could give them out for Christmas presents next year. It's a wonderful use of Norman Rockwell's paintings and the bible versus, with a warm human interpetation. Yes, he did take it back to the doctor's waiting room.
We loved this book.......2003-11-11
My husband and I went on a short road trip and I read it to him as we drove. We had such a beautiful day. As I read one of the stories we were both so choked up that we had to pull over. What a treasure. On our way home we stopped at a bookstore and bought five more for Christmas gifts.
A Classic Tale.......2003-08-01
Simple Acts of Faith will undoubtedly be classified as a "coffee table book," yet such a bland modifier hardly does justice to this unique collection of heart-warming stories. For one, they breathe life into Norman Rockwell's ageless paintings, while the portraits tantalize one's senses. As I read this book, I felt moved, but not back to the mythical "good old days" that only existed in people's somewhat memory. Instead, I found myself grasping the reality that community still exists wherever people take the time to care about each other. Such heroic acts make love a reality, in spite of the mad pace of the 21st century. That is something worth celebrating - and taking time to make happen in our own communities.

Boy Scout campouts, backyard barbecues, Christmas trees, cheerful barbers: no artist quite converted slice-of-life realism into idealized portraits of the American dream as ably as Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), whose distinguished career art historian Laura Claridge captures just as ably in this welcome biography.
Rockwell, Claridge writes, had ambitions to be considered a great artist, but he abandoned them early on in the struggle to make a living through his abilities as an illustrator. He need not have worried about money quite as much as he did, Claridge suggests, for over his long career he produced more than 4,000 paintings and earned millions of dollars; still, as we learn, Rockwell was a complicated man, beset by all sorts of worries and more expressive on canvas than he ever was in the ordinary situations of life. His patriotic style evolved through his long engagement with the Saturday Evening Post, whose editor, George Horace Lorimer, used "as an instrument of Americanization," a means of establishing a national identity and ideals of "an American community made safe by a shared vision of right and wrong." In this and much else, Rockwell excelled, achieving early and lasting success though never earning much respect from critics and other arbiters of taste--even though, Claridge notes, Rockwell had all the requisite irony, and certainly all the necessary skills.
For the last few years, a new generation of critics has been reconsidering Rockwell's career and viewing his work more favorably. Claridge's gracefully written biography will give them still more reason to see him in a positive light. It will also afford those who already cherish his art new insight into an American master. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Norman Rockwell’s hundreds of memorable covers for The Saturday Evening Post made him a twentieth-century American icon. However, because of the very popularity of his idealized depictions of middle-class life, his more serious paintings have been largely ignored, and he has often been deemed a mere illustrator, not a “real” artist.
In this, the first comprehensive biography of America’s most popular artist, Laura Claridge breaks new ground with her appreciative but clear-eyed view of Rockwell’s work—and his life. Based upon previously unpublished family archives and hundreds of interviews, this account reveals for the first time the deep disparity between the artist’s public image and his private life.
Download Description
Critically acclaimed author Claridge breaks new ground with her reappraisal of Norman Rockwell's art, arguing that despite his popular sentimental style, his artistry was masterful, complex, and far more manipulative than people realize. Published to coincide with a major two-year traveling retrospective of Rockwell's work.
Customer Reviews:
a story about pure determinitaion and persistance.......2003-01-29
This book gets a solid three stars for its interesting subject matter and honest approach in storytellng.
Norman Rockwell, unlike his 'perfect' scenes of life in America, did not live a perfect life. His story is filled whith many of the challenges and obstacles that all of us face in our everyday lives... Perhaps that's why his work comes across with such clarity and truthfulness.
Starting out as an ad illustrator at a young age, he moved up in status over the years until his work was considerd not only the best in modern commercial illustration but some even began calling it "Fine Art". How did he accomplish such a feat? Hard work. Everyday in the studio he would put in 10-12 hours... working hard to get the next five projects done because ten more are waiting and they are 6-12 months overdue. (Norman was a workaholic who had a hard time saying no to requests.)
If you like his artwork, or if you want to read a story about pure determinitaion and persistance (...of Cal Ripkin caliber), scan your eyes across a few hundred pages of this one. It was certainly worth the time I spent reading it.
Interesting subject let down by the writing style.......2002-08-27
I opened this book greatly anticipating the read only to be disappointed by the author. I gave 2 stars for subject, 0 stars for the writing. She spent so much time exploring every relative from his distant past as well as someone only confused with a distant past relative that by the time she got down to Norman you had dug though many other Rockwells, which really didin't add to your knowledge of who Norman really was. Also the writing style took away from the subject matter. The style was so different than what you would expect to hear from Norman Rockwell himself. He was a "Regular Joe" and this is written so that you have to dig through the flowery phrasing to get to the meat of the idea. Instead of spending my time enjoying the story, I was working through the writing style. I expected a book on this subject to be a reflection of the man. It is too bad this author felt the need to impress with her turn of a phrase instead of letting her subject make the impression. I'm surprised an editor didn't red pencil a good part of the manuscript and give notes as to phrasing.
A difficult story very well told.......2002-03-23
After reading Claridge's bio on Norman Rockwell, I had a far greater sense of what made the man tick. Claridge explains in great detail Rockwell's self-doubts, insecurities, goals, and personal needs. Rockwell's struggles between practicing "fine" arts and illustration lived with him his entire life, and Claridge gives insight behind the cause of those struggles. The book also succeeded in describing the art world Rockwell inhabited, his influences, and his family relationships. Claridge's Rockwell comes across as an extremely humane man, trying to be as nice as possible to all who crossed his path, while keeping a protective shield around him, so as not to interfere with his artistic productivity. As someone brought up in the television generation, I also appreciated Claridge explaining the important and influential role The Saturday Evening Post played within day-to-day middle class American life.
A sadder aspect of the life of an American icon........2002-01-14
This insightful biography should not be the first book to be read by those interested in the art of Norman Rockwell. Coffee table books displaying his art and shorter biographic sketches should be read first to obtain the background and appreciation of this American icon. Laura Claridge presents an insightful, revealing but uninspring protrait of an aspect of Rockwell's life that is largely unknown to an adoring public. Rockwell's personal life in his later years was an unhappy one. Details of Rockwell's commercial appeal and his discomfort with his advertising commisions are presented. Problems with his wives and a balanced perspective of their father by his sons forms a major portion this book. Nevertheless, those who want to understand the conflicts in a reappraisal of Rockwells's work by art critics and the personal philosophy and inner thoughts of Rockwell in formulating the themes of some of his most famous and beloved works will be well-rewarded. The first 10 pages in the author's preface gives her perspective on how she wrote this biography and how her view of Rockwell and his art changed as she learned more about this individual and his fortunes and misfortunes. The preface is valuable because she outlines the pitfalls of the valididty of any single biography and its dependence on the perpsective of the biographer. As appreciation of the genuius of Rockwell increases after his death, this biography will also become more important.
A thoroughly enjoyable and intensely detailed book.......2001-12-20
This book totally opened my eyes to the fascinating world of illustration, let alone to Norman Rockwell himself. I am amazed that the author could include such learning and erudite information in such an engaging narrative format. I felt by the end of the book that I had personally known Rockwell. I am no novice to the art world, but this study left me far better informed than I was before I began it. Kudos to the author.
Book Description
Following the popular Simple Acts of Faith and Simple Acts of Friendship, this third gathering of Norman Rockwell’s most beloved Americana scenes unite with Margaret Feinberg’s tales of people reaching for the unseen power of hope through prayer and deed...and finding promises to hold on to.
- A woman’s grief presents an opportunity for healing prayers to minister to believers and unbelievers alike.
- Devoted prayers for a nameless man in prison become his path to freedom.
- Young Agnes receives and accepts her calling during prayer. Later, her chosen name becomes synonymous with compassion and hope—Mother Teresa.
Rockwell fans, Americana collectors, and anyone who appreciates encouragement will treasure these portraits of lives changed through the strength of prayer.
Customer Reviews:
Reminders of Why We Should Pray.......2005-05-05
Norman Rockwell's masterful artwork is reason alone to pick up a copy of Simple Prayers of Hope. But Margaret Feinberg goes one step further, compiling breathtaking and eloquent stories of answered prayers. Some relate astonishing miracles, like the woman who needed plane fare and after prayer received the exact amount. Another relates the early story of Mother Teresa, while some portray fulfilled visions or include a humorous twist. These anecdotes will inspire you, touch your heart and remind you of the reasons we should spend time in prayer. This is the kind of book that will make an excellent present for graduation, birthday, grab bag drawing or just as a "thinking of you" gesture of appreciation.
