Florence City Pack.......2000-06-13
The Florence City Pack did a great job of giving the top 25 sites to visit in Florence. The picutres were good as were the highlights of each cite. We also found the general city information to be helpful, for example, public restrooms and getting around.
Unfortunately, we found the hours of operation for each site were extremely unreliable, causing us to miss museums and try to build them into our schedule the next day. It seemed that this was the norm for most of the sites they listed. We ended up calling the places to get the visiting hours.
Overall, the book was helpful and easy to carry around because it fits into a pocket. The map was up to date and came in handy. I would reccommend the book as quick reference, but suggest getting a more comprehensive guide for detailed descriptions of the region and sites.

Book Description
"Politics makes strange bedfellows": the truth of this saying has seldom been clearer than it is today for the Conservative Party of Canada. Such an uneasy coalition of unlikely allies has become a defining quality of Canadian conservatism. In New Brunswick, with its clear French-English, rural-urban, and Catholic-Protestant dualities, the struggles played out in the political arena have become a microcosm for the rest of Canada. In The Right Fight: Bernard Lord and the Conservative Dilemma, CBC reporter Jacques Poitras provides a journalist's account of how Bernard Lord rose to the top in provincial politics and why his path may yet lead to Ottawa. It's a must-read for Stephen Harper and for conservative thinkers wanting to take the measure of Lord, the politician. The clean sweep of Frank McKenna's Liberals in 1987 shook the foundations of the New Brunswick Progressive Conservative Party, but election night 1991 utterly shattered the Tory dream. As expected, the Liberals won a second majority, but the fervently anti-bilingualism Confederation of Regions (COR) Party formed the official Opposition. For the first time in a hundred years, the Conservatives were out in the cold, victims of vote-splitting on the right. In The Right Fight, Jacques Poitras reveals that, although drug and other scandals plagued Richard Hatfield's final years as premier, equally fatal was Hatfield's insistence on English-French equality within his party. It ruptured the already uneasy coalition he'd built and sent old-style Tories flocking into COR's arms. It took the unexpected arrival of Bernard Lord, young and untried, to lead a dramatic reversal in the party's fortunes. Luring COR members back into the Conservative fold while maintaining the Red Tory base so carefully cultivated by Hatfield, Lord reunited the party and won back-to-back majority governments. Because of his success, Bernard Lord has been vigorously and publicly courted as a potential leader of the new federal Conservative Party by backroom movers and shakers. For the time being, he remains Premier of New Brunswick. But the call may well come again, and when it does, New Brunswick's coalition-builder may choose to wage "the right fight" on a much larger field. In this revealing look at the 25-year struggle over language in New Brunswick, Jacques Poitras shows where Bernard Lord comes from and what challenges remain before him.

The Enforcer: Spilotro.......2007-01-30
I was looking for a good summary of mob connections between Las Vegas and other cities. The book does a pretty good job of summarizing Tony Spilotro's life and the activity of the Chicago and Milwaukee mobs in Las Vegas, but there is too much Bill Roemer in the book. It reads like a war story told over drinks in a tavern.
Book Description
For close to 40 years, gangsters across Canada bowed to the fearsome will of Johnny "Pops" Papalia, the Mafia chieftain who rose from a working-class ghetto in Hamilton, Ontario to hold a tenuous grip on organized crime.
National Post reporter Adrian Humphreys followed Papalia's career and in his book, The Enforcer: Johnny Pops Papalia--A Life and Death in the Mafia, published by HarperCollins, he tracks the rise to power and gangland slaying of Canada's Capone after more than four decades in the Mafia.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant book about the Canadian Mafia and Johnny Pops.......2007-05-28
This is one of the best books about organized crime/mafia l have ever read; it is concise, factual and full of much detail and well reasoned explanations, it was great to read a book by a journalist who has done his research well and is also a very good writer. This book brilliantly captures the rise of Johnny Pops and the Mafia in Canada, especially Hamilton, Ontario in the 20th century.
All the rackets of gambling, stand over, [...], labor and drugs are well covered and explained as the author links various criminals together and how they interacted, co-operated and fought each other. The book details the violent, and uncertain world of Johnny Pops and other criminals and Pops comes across as a man who was scared of nothing except the tax man and later in life going back to jail where he spent a quarter of his life. This book is great read for true crime buffs.
The Truth.......2000-06-14
I read this book 3 times and every time I learned something new. I can honestly say that I already knew all this. I am Frankie's adopted son. I didn't know much about this buisness and when I asked he himself told me to read this book. After never understanding I understand. And I garentee you that this book is a real life and indepth look at life in the real Canadian Mob. It will tell you about the family's buisness and personal affairs. If you have ever wondered about the inner workings of a true Mafia family, this book will tell you. Nothing sugarcoated just the truth.
A great read!.......2000-03-15
Probably the best Canadian organized crime history yet! And I have read several. With Pops killed and the Musitanos getting 10 years (Feb 5/00),the Papalia story continues. What's next for Organized crime in Canada?
An amazing story of the history of MAFIA in Hamilton Ontario.......1999-11-15
The Enforcer is a wonderful book for anyone who has a feeling for the life of the mafia. Johnny Papalia was a one of a kind who beat all the odds in life and the mafia. This book is highly recomended. 5 Stars

Customer Reviews:
Definitely worth a read for crime fans.......2002-03-14
This is not one of the very best books written by an organized crime soldier, but it's unique and is particularly interesting for its portrayal of the growing interrelationship between Italian organized crime and outlaw bikers. Kirby's knowledge of and insights into biker gangs are much more interesting than his stories of the Italian mafia, because by his own account he seems to have been regarded as a sort of flunkie just because he wasn't Italian, despite doing many complicated jobs for the "family." It's interesting to see that xenophobic world from close-up but not, strictly speaking, from within. Another interesting fact about this book is that it's a bit mistitled -- the "mafia" is in fact the Calabrian organized crime group operating in eastern Canada, not what we usually think of as "The Mafia" -- that is to say, the sicilians. While there are many similarities and the two organizations often interact, it's not quite the same thing. While I can't say this was a drop-dead read like WISEGUY or THE VALACHI PAPERS or UNDERBOSS, it definitely belongs on any organized crime reader's shelf.
Title's a bit deceiving but the action is real upfront!.......1999-03-29
The story is told in first-person by a BIKER who eventually ends up doing dirty work for the Canadian Calabrian mafia. The first half of the book reminds us what a violent, criminal menace the bikers were in the 70's (I love that decade). From the barroom brawls, arson, robberies, extortion, and yes, murder---Cecil Kirby provides some authentic insight into Canada and its biker gangs. Then he goes on to describe how the mob used him to do some of the aforementioned crimes. You never for a moment doubt the narrator's honesty or viciousness but you do thank him for one hell of a story!

Ribbonwork.......2007-03-10
Excellent. Very easy instructions and easy projects. I was immediately able to make beautiful flowers out of ribbon. Highly recommended.
B eautiful!.......2007-02-12
This book is all you need to know - materials, techniques, inspiration for projects. If you'd like to learn ribbonwork, this is the only book you need.
Simplified finally.........2007-01-30
This is the 3rd book I've bought on making ribbon flowers and it is certainly the one to make it easier for you. Her flower directons make your ribbon flowers look like the ones you buy.
A wonderfully illustrated, completely understandable, tutorial........2007-01-04
I am completely in love with this book! I have learned to make the most beautiful resemblance of natures perfect jewell, the flower, from a simple silk ribbon. Some of these perfect little creations look so lifelike it just makes you smile! The author not only provides complete step by step instructions for each bud, leaf, or flower, but pictures of each, as well as some simple and elegant projects to get you started. If you think you may enjoy this craft of old, this is the book for you.
The author does encourage us to choose high quality ribbons for your projects, and this I find to be the best advice in my experience so far. Silk ribbons are suggested for many of the flowers. Silks are pricey so shop around for the best price and ask for samples when available. The only negative about this book is the lack of resource suggestions other than the authors own webstore. There are many trim and ribbon stores on the internet that can be located with your favorite search engine. Check the yellow pages to see if you have a trim and fabric store in your own neighborhood as well. Enjoy!
Customer Reviews:
Not what you think, but still interesting..........2005-09-13
The title of this book is misleading, although perhaps not intentionally so. A more accurate title would have been, "Dwarf and Unusual Conifers in the Gotelli Collection of the United States National Arboretum". (What this title lacks in elegance it makes up for in accuracy.)
"Dwarf & Unusual Conifers Coming of Age: A Guide to Mature Garden Conifers" appears to be a self-published (and self-designed) guide to the remarkable collection of conifers originally assembled by New Jersey businessman William Gotelli and transferred, legally and physically, to the USNA in 1962. Existing material on this collection is incomplete and scattered, so a guide to the collection and its individual specimens is a valuable addition to the literature, and a great help for visitors.
The book falls short in several regards. Its design and typography are not up to professional publishing standards. Distracting and inconsistent, they obscure the very real informational value of the descriptive, historical, and cultural sections. The photography is adequate, but does not do justice to the specimens, and lackluster reproduction values diminish its value further. There are numerous errors of spelling and nomenclature (Botanical nomenclature is admittedly complicated and prone to error, but this book has more than its share.) Finally, the target audience for this book is somewhat unclear. It is too detailed and intimate for the casual visitor, and insufficiently serious and authoritative for the true expert.
These defects aside, " Dwarf & Unusual Conifers Coming of Age" fills an interesting gap in the lore of collectable conifers. The history of the Gotelli collection, and especially the photos of Gotelli's original plantings, are fascinating. The panoramic views of the current beds are very useful to the contemporary visitor. Finally, the sections on culture and integrated pest management, largely authored by USNA staff, provide practical and tested advice for growers and collectors. For serious conifer enthusiasts, this book is probably a must-have, since much of the material presented is not available elsewhere. Others should be guided by the real focus of the book - if they plan to visit, or have visited, the Gotelli Collection in Washington, DC, this book will add significant value to the experience. I'm still waiting for a definitive guide to mature forms of dwarf and unusual conifers.
One of the few really excellent books on conifers.......1999-03-06
This book is a rare work of art. The extensive and excellent photography shows plants in garden settings; photos are numerous and clearly defined. The cultural descriptions, including things like explanations, size, form, zone and suggestions for companion plantings are also very well written-complete and easy to understand. If you are a serious landscaper or love unusual conifers, this reference book is a MUST!

Beware of Missing Pages!.......2006-05-31
This book is a joke! It's missing 65 pages from girls names. It goes from P to V. Of course I am having a girl! I called Meadowbrook Press and they could NOT have cared less. They said that it's not their fault but the printers fault. I asked them for the name of the printer and she couldn't tell me! I told them that they are irresponsible since they published this book and it's MISSING pages!!! BEWARE OF BOOKS FROM MEADOWBROOK PRESS! THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS!
Inconvenient Convenience.......2006-02-25
I originally bought this book so that I could keep from having to run to the computer every time I wanted to learn what a name meant as I thought about whether it was something I could live with. I was frustrated by the 1001 spelling variations. Good grief, the poor kid will have to correct everyone who spells his/her name the regular way. If you really don't think that's a hassle, wait until you're having to change every mispelled version of a name. My son's name is Bryan and for the life of me I thought that was fairly normal. Yet the poor fellow started kindergarten this year automatically telling people, you spelled my name wrong but that's okay. At least he's easy going about it...what if your child isn't...Just food for thought.
How About More Actual Ethnic Spelling Variations Instead of Madeup Spellings?.......2005-07-31
As someone who likes to read name books and one of the first name books I ever read being an older book by Bruce Lansky and actually having liked it I can now see why so many people are disappointed with his books. It's all of the kreativ (Creative) spellings, there's just too many of them. I would actually prefer to see more actual bonafide foreign spelling variations instead. That is much more unique in my opinion. Taking a common popular name like Michaela, or Madison, and changing the spellings to McKayla, Makaela, Mykaela, Madacyn, Madasyn or Madecin is not going to make a common popular name sound or look any less common or popular or unique, it will just look like common popular name that is spelled incorrectly.
Hungarian names? Bogus..........2005-07-07
In this book the authors clearly wanted to boost the number of names as high as possible. After exhausting all the meaningful known english names (and apparently creating lots of new ones), they probably had no other choice than to "go international".
All right, this opinion comes from somebody who is fresh out of Hungary - the bigger half of the names originated as "Hungarian" in this book are not from our language!
Sooo... was the book still useful to me? Yepp, it got my imagination going... Meaning, it helped me to start inventing names too. So dear readers, how 'bout AMERIQ?
(My wife went with a different name though) :)
THE BEST NAME BOOK EVER.......2005-02-20
CREATIVE , CREATIVE CREATIVE I LOVE THIS BOOK AND GIVE IT TO ALL MY FRIENDS. I AM A BIG FAN OF MISTER LANSKY. ILOVE THIS BOOK AND ALL THE CRAZY SPELLING AND MEANINGS...

Diagnosed with tuberculosis at age 7, the talk of London before he turned 22, and dead at 25, Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898) was a textbook example of the doomed artist he and his fellow decadents admired so much. British journalist and art critic Matthew Sturgis paints an evocative picture of the cultural milieu that shaped Beardsley, with its ferocious rivalry between the idealistic Pre-Raphaelites and the more sardonic English impressionists, who ultimately claimed Beardsley's loyalty (though the ambitious teenager initially gained the patronage of Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones). The author's portrait of Beardsley is equally vivid, limning both his dandified affectations and underlying sweetness, his dedication to art and the distaste for sustained work that made him the despair of his publishers. Beardsley's unique black-and-white drawings--perfect for the new technology of mass reproduction--made a sensation, first with the commissioned artwork for Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur and Wilde's Salome, then in the bold periodical he founded with friends, The Yellow Book. But Wilde's trial for gross indecency tainted Beardsley (though Sturgis's take is that he was more likely a virgin than a homosexual); he was fired from The Yellow Book; and his tuberculosis worsened along with his commercial prospects. The author depicts his subject's agonized final months with the same judicious sympathy he trains on "The Beardsley Boom" of 1894. --Wendy Smith
Customer Reviews:
Perfect for the Budding Beardsleyite.......2004-03-21
Among the myriad biographies on Aubrey Beardsley, I have to say that this one stands out. Thorough, in depth and a quick read, it covers his life, work and complex personality perfectly. Although I have enjoyed immensely many other books about the man, I feel that this one provides a great starting point. From Beardsley's birth in Brighton to his untimely death in Menton, his tragic story is told with warmth, pathos and the great knowledge of a man clearly admiring of his subject. This book will open your eyes to new and startling truths about Beardsley and his work, if you have been convinced that his life was one of wanton decadence and sexual excess. What a surprise to learn that this clearly was not the case - rather, Beardsley was a most conservative man. I have for many years admired him and his work greatly, and am personally very thankful that Sturgis wrote this book.
For those more interested in a review of Beardsley's work, I'd suggest Chris Snodgrass' book, Aubrey Beardsley, Dandy of the Grotesque. It stands as a perfect companion to Sturgis' biography.
A Beardsley Biography.......2000-09-08
Matthew Sturgis' biography of the short-lived pen and ink master of black and white imagery provides an informative and elegantly written life of Art Noveau figure Aubrey Beardsley. Discussions of Beardsley's early years, meetings with famous figures like Oscar Wilde and James Whistler, Yellow Book fame, and last years full of physical decline are covered with intelligent attention to detail. Also included are several reproductions of Beardsley's illustrations and the critical response to them. The book is a fast read that is accessible to those not overly familiar with the man and the period, and is also interesting to the fin-de-siecle conoisseur.

Book Description
Aubrey Beardsley lived the life of a decadent, and his art--witty, irreverent, grotesque--often shocked late-Victorian sensibilities. His work was also sublimely elegant, and his stylish, suggestive illustrations for Oscar Wilde's Salome, and for The Studio, The Yellow Book, and The Savoy were widely admired throughout Europe and America. In Peter Raby's new book, Beardsley's brief, meteoric career is placed in the context of the remarkable age in which he lived. Complemented by numerous reproductions of his work, it presents a captivating portrait of the artist and the last decade of the 19th century. Peter Raby is the author of Bright Paradise, Samuel Butler, and The Cambridge Companion to Oscar Wilde.

Book Description
Aubrey Vincent Beardsley, illustrator and writer, was the most notorious and outstanding artist of the fin de siècle. His disturbing erotic drawings shocked the sensibilities of the Victorians and his friendship and collaboration with Oscar Wilde has secured his place in the pantheon of great artists of the 19th century. Jaques-Emile Blanche's portrait of Bearsley, his face 'like a silver hatchet', is the enduring image of this fabulously talented man who died at the age of just 25. Beardsley's most important illustrations were for Wilde's Salome, Popes The Rape of the Lock, The Lysistrata of Aristophanes and Jonson's Valpone. He was art editor of the hugely influential Yellow Book from which he was dismissed following the arrest of Wilde becoming thereafter the creative editor of the 'Savoy' magazine. He went on to write the highly erotic romance The Story of Venus and Tannhauser which was published in an unexpurgated version as Under the Hill. This extraordinary man created some of the most striking and enduring images of the last one hundred years. His influence on Oscar Wilde and his circle was profound and his achievements in such a short life is one of the great literary and artistic stories of the 19th century.

The Perfect Introduction to Beardsley's Life and Work.......2004-03-31
A quick read, and packed with wonderful photographs and drawings, this book is a great treat for the new Beardsley fan. This book re-opened my eyes to his work, and broadened my horizons, as to who he was, and the life that he led. In other words, it laid the foundation for my further studies of Aubrey Beardsley, and his artistic contribution to the world.
The information is thorough and accurate, and the images are a joy to behold - so much so, in fact, that I purchased a second copy for the sole purpose of cutting out and framing them, for hanging in my drawing studio. Also, the brief nature of the book is helpful, in that it doesn't require the reader to commit, as is necessary for a longer biography. It serves as an ideal introduction. I would strongly recommend it, however, to both those who have just discovered Beardsley, and those who have long loved Beardsley's work.

Book Description
Labrador Days describes the "Tales of the Sea Toilers" of the Atlantic Coast of Canada. Chapters include: There's Trouble on the Sea, The Doctor's Big Fee, The Triple Alliance, Portland Bill, Two Christmasses, and many more.
One of the popular works written by the well-known doctor, Wilfred T. Grenfell. Sir Wilfred Grenfell is a legend in Newfoundland and Labrador. He arrived from England in 1892 to investigate the lives of the people who fished on "the Labrador." He found poverty and destitution, and decided to change it. Through his tireless efforts - fund raising, building hospitals, nursing stations, schools, and more - Dr. Grenfell enriched the lives of thousands of people.
