Book Description
We've all heard the gruesome nursery rhyme about Lizzie Borden's infamous murder of her parents. But there is much more to the tale than the poem. Hoffman's book is a fascinating examination of a crime and its aftermath, all the more so because the story is familiar to us all. This book is a historical encyclopedia that attempts to make sense of the confusing array of people who were part of the Lizzie Borden mystery. For the first time, all of those involved in any way with the case have been given a listing that includes his or her biography as well as an explanation of his or her connection to the murders. Each person - over 650 in all - is listed in alphabetical order. Yesterday in Old Fall River also features a subject index that will allow the reader to quickly find a list of all the policemen, lawyers, physicians, and others involved in the Lizzie Borden case.
Many aficionados complain that when they read books about the case, either facts and names are wrong or the author does not adequately identify the person being described. Yesterday in Old Fall River clears up much of this confusion and facilitates comprehension of this fascinating case.
Customer Reviews:
A perfect bedside book, but I spotted one glitch.......2004-10-13
If you are fascinated by the Borden case (and apparently many of us are) this is an amazing compilation of biographic information about anyone (even prospective jurors who weren't selected for the jury) linked to the murders and trial. You can dip in and find out about 'Me & Brownie', Hyman Lubinsky, and all the rest, written in an entertaining but informative manner.
I nearly fell out of bed when I read that Lizzie's actress 'friend' Nance O'Neil appeared in the movie 'The Titfield Thunderbolt', one of my favourite British comedies. I'm sorry Mr Hoffman but this was Nancy O'Neil, an Australian actress born in 1911.
I sincerely hope this is the only flaw in what appears to be an otherwise meticulously researched book.
Needed Reference Book.......2002-06-26
When I bought this book, I thought I was buying a history of Fall River, Massachusetts. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it's a reference book, comprised of everyone who was ever involved personally in the Lizzie Borden murder case. Bios are listed alphabetically and I can't think of anyone Mr. Hoffman's left out. I gave this book 4 stars because there are some errors here and there, and more photos of those we don't usually see would have been fantastic. Still, it's a good piece of work and fascinating whether you're looking up a person or if you just want to sit and read it cover to cover. Don't miss it before it becomes unavailable, as many Lizzie Borden books do.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive - read BEFORE buying your Iggy.......2007-08-26
First-rate coverage of the whys & wherefores of raising iguanas, especially the Green Iguana. It would be a good idea to read the first few chapters before buying to get a feel for the Iguana "lifestyle".
Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual.......2007-06-28
As the subtitle says, this is the "ultimate owner's manual." It is comprehensive book, with detailed and specific information, punctuated by anecdotes from iguana owners. Because the iguana is a difficult pet to maintain, with specific environmental and dietary requirements, this book is essential to the iguana owner.
A must have for all Iguana owners, or Wanna be's.......2007-03-23
This book has it all. Everything you need to know about your pet. The photos are beautiful, and the written word is concise and easily understood. The authors passion for Iguanas is obvious, and his knowledge on the subject vast. It may seem expensive and perhaps you wonder if you need so much information, but if you have an Iguana you owe it to yourself to understand this unusual reptiles behavior, habits and special needs. After reading this book, I became more aware of my Jacks special place on this planet.
Exhaustively researched and still a good read........2007-02-23
This book has helped me a great deal in giving both my pet iguanas excellent care. It covers all the ranges of care from designing or a habitat or what to look for in a preexisting one, as well as proper health care and nutrition. It even explains how to identify the country of orgin based on coloring and body type. It teaches responsibility and actually discourages getting an iguana if the would be owner thinks it is an easy to care for pet. All in all its one of the best pieces of nonfiction i have read and it full of easy to follow advice presented in a clear detailed manner.
Extremely informative and accurate.......2007-02-02
This book is the best Green iguana book I have ever read and has the best and most accurate information on large green iguanas. It is very difficult to take care of these little green guys and this book absolutely a life saver. If I only had the funds to purchase one book on iguanas, I would choose this one.
Book Description
This is the best-selling book that has been blamed for the current green iguana problem.... too many green iguanas in captivity surviving to adult size. This compact manual offers a thorough coverage of housing, feeding, medical problems behavior problems and captive breeding. Includes many color photos and illustrations. It remains one of the best-selling herp books of all time! 75pp. color.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated info........2007-02-22
I have not read this book, and if it actually suggests feeding animal protein, (meat), to your Iguana I wouldn't bother. It was written in the early 90's when sound Iguana dietary needs were still being re formulated.
There's probably still allot of sound advice in the book, just weigh it with up to date information like Melissa Kaplan's Iguana's for dummies, or James Hatfield's Green Iguana The Ultimate Owner's Manual. Or check out the Green Iguana Society, on the net. It's free and there are hundreds of other Iguana keepers to talk to.
THIS BOOKS INFORMATION CAN HARM YOUR IGUANA!.......2005-06-23
I do not recomend this book to any iguana owner. This book is by far the worst iguana book I have seen yet. The nutrition section is out of date. It says to feed your iguana meat!?!, and commercial iguana foods! Iguanas are strict herbivores and with this information, it can cause kidney failure! Im only 13 and i know better than to listen to this book, I honestly think you should turn to Green iguana, the ultimate owners manual, by James W. Hatfield for better results.
With all do respect
Eric Tortorici
Up-to-date and correct.......1999-11-28
This book is the most useful on the market for iguana owners both new and experienced. It presents information that is accurate, precise and complete. As a veterinarian board certified in nutrition and internal medicine, who has published on the growth of iguanas and on dietary protein and kidney function in mammals, I can vouch that the presentation of protein nutrition is up-to-date and correct (see Journal of Nutrition, 1998, and elsewhere). I agree with de Vosjoli's recommendations on diet and feeding. This book is a must read for all owners of the green iguana.
This manual is out of date; nutrition info is incorrect........1998-04-14
The Green Iguana Manual by Philippe De Vosjoli is often recommended by pet owners and veterinarians. However, the nutritional information is out of date. Animal protein in any amount is no longer recommended in iguana diets, including diets for juveniles. Following this manual for nutrition information could mean your iguana ends up with kidney and/or liver failure and a shortened lifespan. Please see the 1996 edition of Reptile Medicine and Surgery for iguana diet information.
Best iguana care guide currently available........1996-12-01
Includes very detailed information on the environmental
and dietary requirements of green iguanas in captivity.
A must read for all iguana owners

12 Stylish designs inspired by the book! Popular autjor Debbie Macommber has discovered that women's fiction and knitting go together like a hand and glove - a knit glove, of course. In her books THE SHOP ON BLOSSOM STREET and A GOOD YARN, Debbie introduces us to two groups of women from highly diverse backgrounds. The women join knitting classes at a small yarn shop in Seattle and soon discover that friendship truly knows no boundaries.
Customer Reviews:
Great Patterns!!.......2007-07-30
The variety of patterns makes this a great pattern book for knitters of every skill level. Wonderful designs that can be used for generations.
If knitting is your bag........2007-05-12
Every pattern is one I am going to try. I am knitting the baby blanket now.
A Good Guide for doing baby knits.......2007-03-26
A very interesting book on baby knits. Love Debbie Macomber
A real heartwarmer.......2005-08-05
My MIL gave this to me as a gift, and it's fantastic! While in some ways it's advertising for Macomber's novels, the theme gives it a true "Knit Along" feel. Patterns are written in plain English, with a wide variety of skill levels; a section in the back offers basic techniques, reference charts, and illustrations for those who need a little help. The print and illustrations are large, and there are big, beautiful photographs and bold color sprinkled throughout.
I do appreciate that each yarn type is included, but what I love most is *how* it's included: there's a reference inside the back cover for the exact brands, colors, and amounts of yarn used in each project photo. Within the pattern itself, you're simply provided yarn weight, amount needed, and color suggestions (when needed). I really enjoyed having this information kept separate!
I'm planning to start with the First Steps Baby Blanket (a cute eyelet pattern), translate the Vera's Scarf pattern into a lacy shawl, and see what happens from there!
A Good Yarn.......2005-08-02
I read the book and I just love the companion pattern book that goes a long with it.

Book Description
In this beautifully illustrated book, Maureen Carroll examines the most recent evidence of the existence of ancient gardens, the horticultural practices used to plant and maintain them, and the many forms and functions they assumed. Surveying the ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece, Italy, and
the provinces of the Roman Empire from the second millennium B.C. to the middle of the first millennium A.D., Carroll finds that whether grown as sources of food, symbols of wealth and prestige, or dwellings for the gods, the cultivation of gardens played an integral role in both the public and
private spheres of the ancient world. She concludes with a chapter on the survival of ancient gardening traditions in the Islamic and Byzantine worlds and the ways in which gardens have figured in these cultures' perceptions and depictions of paradise.
Culling evidence from a wide variety of archaeological, textual, and pictorial sources, and illustrated with delightful images from tomb and wall paintings, sculptural reliefs, manuscripts, and reconstructions, Carroll provides fascinating insights into the earthly paradises of antiquity.
Customer Reviews:
Ancient Gardens, Unchanging Gardeners.......2004-07-23
We are all familiar with ancient buildings like the Luxor temples, Acropolis, or houses in Pompeii, and from them we can get an idea of how people of their times lived. But what about their gardens? The question is not trivial. Gardens have always represented an ideal sensual and peaceful environment, and what ancient gardens were like could tell us something about the ancients and about humans in general. This sort of research has been done by Maureen Carroll, an archeologist who has dug in garden sites all around the regions of the ancient world. She has written _Earthly Paradises: Ancient Gardens in History and Archaeology_ (Getty Publications), a small and scholarly book that unlike most academic works, is beautifully produced with almost a hundred pictures, mostly in color. It is a concise overview of what we can now know about ancient gardens of the Near East and Mediterranean region, and will delight those interested in ancient history or in gardening.
"Gardens are ephemeral, as fragile and short-lived as the people who once cultivated them," Carroll writes. This was one of the reasons that archaeologists neglected them; marble, mortar, and mosaics lasted longer and were easier to find and understand. It was not until the 1970s that the "empty spaces" of courtyards and outside of houses became the target of evaluation. Most of the gardens described here are not agricultural or economic efforts, but luxuries. When Pericles encouraged Athenians not to mourn their possessions in a loss to Sparta, one of the luxuries he specifically mentioned as unfit for bereavement was the garden. Gardens were, however, no less work than they are today. A papyrus document shows that the garden owner Talames required that the gardener Peftumont maintain the irrigation channels, water the garden, protect against sparrows and crows, and do a full day's work.
One of the pleasures of _Earthly Paradises_ is that it gives the ever-valuable lesson of how little people really change. For thousands of years they have found refreshment and sensual delight in gardens that were just for pleasure, not for profit, although baser motives of showiness to impress others also seem eternal. There is one example after another here of ancient gardeners doing the same thing gardeners do now; it isn't surprising that watering and weeding had to be done, of course, but it is interesting that we can recognize so many tools for the gardener. Most iron objects have corroded away, but Egyptian paintings, for instance, show the use of rakes and hoes. We have to assume that they were used in Egyptian gardens as well as for regular agriculture, because such paintings of gardens are idealized and don't show tools or work. There is a detail of a Roman painting shown here of a songbird sitting on a vertical reed stick which serves as a support for a rose plant that has been tied to it. Terracotta pots for plants were so essential to the Romans that they started making them in Britain immediately after invading in 43 CE. A ladder whose impression was left in the ash of Pompeii looks completely modern, with a tapering top such as is used in fruit picking. The central square of Greek cities, the agora, was planted with trees for the shade of citizens, and in Roman cities similar spaces had pits cut into the rock to be filled with soil and used as planters for trees. Gardeners borrowed styles from each other, with, for instance, a Roman garden decorated with statuary of Greek or Persian themes and having a central water channel as was favored in Egypt. The borrowing has gone on especially during the baroque period, when ornate classical landscape design renewed in the Renaissance became the fashion. To be sure, Carroll's delightful book is not a how-to for setting up an ancient garden two millennia later, but gardeners will find much that is familiar here, and some will find plants and arrangements that can agreeably be incorporated into their own personal paradises.

Written with the compassionate language that people have come to rely upon and expect from these proven relationship experts, this book goes beyond an explanation of the condition to help men and women avoid the self-destructive permanence of remaining with people incapable of loving anyone but themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Only the names were changed to protect the innocent.......2007-10-02
As I sat in Barnes & Noble reading this book, my jaw dropped as I read detail after detail that described my relationship to the letter. After a short initial "getting to know you" phase, it was all about him. He would get up and leave early on Sunday morning because he had so much to do. He would always stay at my house -- we rarely stayed at his place. (For one thing, if we were at my place the other woman who took so much of his time wouldn't call since she would only call his home number.) He wouldn't invite me out to happy hour with his friends. He'd finally invite me to events, but then at the last minute would have something come up and disinvite me. I was the "perfect woman" and then I was nothing. If I backed away, he'd give me attention again for a while. He would say mean things about nice people. He and his business were far superior to anyone else out there doing the same thing, and it was all because of him (according to him). When we met he was so charming and wonderful and I was the answer to all his problems. The list goes on. Now I am going to buy the book and highlight all the things that validate my feelings so I remember that it didn't end because of some flaw of my own, and so I can get over him once and for all.
If you have been in this type of relationship, this book could be very helpful to you to help you see that it WASN'T YOU and there was (or is) nothing you could do to change things.
this book could save your life.......2007-05-18
thank god for this book...it is really helping me heal from my relationship with a narcissistic ex.
this book is brutally honest and rightfully so. it explores narcissistic behavior, why we may fall for narcissists and how to get over them. it has made me look at my own "narcissistic" issues and also helped me to realize that this isn't about me or his exes, but it's about him.
being a narcissist sounds like absolute hell. being a victim of one is an awful experience to say the least BUT anything is better than living in the tortured, miserable world of a narcissist.
This purchase sucked - because I didn't order it.......2007-05-13
I NEVER ordered this item.
This was CLEARLY an AMAZON mistake.
Accepting things in life as real.......2007-05-12
...is sometimes pretty hard. Having a NP in your family means perhaps never getting 100% confirmation about their condition. NP is irreversable and therefore also hard to accept. It means accepting that things will not change, but that ones approach towards this person has to change.
Through so many different examples, in this book, of what life can be like in a relationship with a Narcissistic Personality this book helped me accept my situation and helped me focus on the things I had to do.
The best of its kind........2006-12-25
I've read every book there is on narcissism, and this is the best. It captured my experience to a "t" and offered the most comprehensive and detailed information (without being clinical or boring) on all facets of the disorder. It was such a relief to have a name (and description) for the incredible insanity I lived through with my narcissistic partner. I especially loved the story about the man who lovingly made a sandwich for his girlfriend at a party. Anyone who's been involved with a narcissist can relate to the twisted truth of what actually happened when the story unfolded. Fascinating stuff and a real lifesaver. If you want to understand how you got involved with this type of person -- and how to avoid it in the future -- this is the book for you.

Book Description
Paul Klee, best known for his mastery of color and semi-abstract patchwork paintings of squares, completed more than 10,000 paintings, drawings, and etchings during his life. His work is difficult to classify but widely admired and highly sought after. Carl Djerassi, scientist, novelist, philanthropist, most famous for inventing the birth control pill, was a great fan of Klee and amassed one of the most important private collections of his work in the world.
This catalog reproduces highlights from the collection, now owned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, including full-color images of nearly one hundred rarely published works. These drawings, sketches, gouache and watercolors reflect the whole of Klee's short but prolific career and are among his most beautiful and important works. The text includes background and critical commentary from noted Klee experts. In addition, an interview with Djerassi reveals his artistic endeavors and passion for Klee, a creative genius whose energy, versatility, productivity, and vision speak volumes to the scientist and anyone interested in the inventive power of the imagination.

A great service was provided Edward Abbey fans with the publication of this marvelous little tome. Now we anarchists have a handy source of short bits by Abbey to plaster on our webpages, our mail, and even our car bumpers! Up with nature, down with Empire!
4.5 is closer to it........2001-06-26
This is not Abbey's grand work nor was it intended to be. This is a small collection of one-liners and pithy observations of a highly talented, self-admitted misanthrope. "Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell" is a prime example.
Abbey was a truck riding good ole boy and was about as politically correct as a punch to the head. His backpack was not designed by Gucci and his boots were mostly army surplus but he spent a life time outdoors, not behind a desk finding fault. His writings, his actions and his public appearances brought more awareness of nature and its plight to the public than did the combined number of his critics by a factor of 1000.
Borne just before the depression, he did not see all wild game as Bambi or Thumper but, as a child, watched as his father hunted for the table. Abbey may not be for everyone, but, by the same token, neither is Mr. Rogers.
If you have read a lot of Abbey this is a great book........2001-03-14
If you have read only a few of Abbey's books these quotes might not mean anything to you. This is not a story but is just a collection of quotes. Although he likes to make broad generalizations like 'all rebels are good' that is part of what makes Abbey so endearing. He doesn't sugar coat his opinions. I may not agree with all he says but I do respect him for at least putting it out there and not backing down. It also gives a lot of insight into his writing and reveals some specfics that you would have to read every book of his carefully in order to understand. It does make for a great reference and is interesting to see him contradict himself. You could very easily write 'Down the River with Abbey' by using this book and it would have much the same feel as his book concerning Thoreau. A great book for just thumbing through or reading out load to friends on a long car trip.
Skip it!.......2000-06-07
Edward Abbey is quite possibly the most overrated author of the 20th Century. For proof, look no further then this little book of pseudo-wisdom. You'll have the pleasure of watching as Ed spouts tiresome untruths (all government is bad, all science is bad, all rebels are good, etc.) with the petulant attitude that he is the very first person in history to say them all, and that it makes him great. Environmentalists who think that Abbey was some kind of hero might be shocked by the elitist arrogance of this "man of the people" (he thanks nuclear physicists for inventing the atomic bomb) or by right-wing moronics worthy of the most brainless militiaman ("the rifle and handgun are 'equalizers'--the weapons of a democracy"). Abbey even puts the s-word in print and brags about it as if he were the first person on the planet to do it. If you are an environmentalist (like me) and you want inspiration, read Emerson, read John Muir, even read Wendell Berry--but skip Edward Abbey.
Vox et Abbey! Fantastic little book!.......1996-12-02
After Ed's passing, there were many holes, despite the prolific nature of the self proclaimed bastard. This small book offers a wonderful insight into the man behind the Monkey Wrench. Through his journals, poems and other unpublished work, another ray of desert sunlight falls upon Ed's hulking form. We miss you Abbey, but this eases the emptiness a little

Book Description
Letters home to the south of England from rural workers after their emigration to Upper Canada.
Book Description
Collected and translated by Carolyn Alessio, this bilingual anthology of poems, stories, memories, and philosophies was written and illustrated by the children of La Esperanza, Guatemala. Drawing upon the fortitude of their mothers, who began hand-sewing crafts to sell in the United States in order to survive the hardships of this war-torn impoverished country, Alessio’s students, aged four to sixteen, reveal amazing survival skills, fertile imaginations, and dreams of attaining better lives. The resulting work is a collection of poems and drawings that are terse, funny, sometimes sad, but always humanly, gloriously alive.
As Alessio explains, “At first, I thought I might be imagining the echoes of magical realism, but as I continued to read the students’ writing and study their drawings, I found similar themes. Witches killed children who didn’t respect the spirits; women abused by their husbands sought refuge in trees with magical doors. People who didn’t have money or jobs lived on the road and in forests, where they alternately fought and partied with the animals.”
The volume features a foreword from Luis Alberto Urrea,
author of Across the Wire: Life and Hard Times on the Mexican Border and By the Lake of Sleeping Children: The Secret Life of the Mexican Border.

Book Description
foreword by Julia VanHaaften
"Particular Voices is an extraordinary achievement. These portraits and words of writers who so often have been silenced provide an exquisite visual and written record of courage." -- Barbara Smith, Writer and Activist
"Like August Sander who chronicled the citizens of Germany's modern world, Bob Giard has crafted an eloquent taxonomy of those gay and lesbian writers whose collective voice has proclaimed the joy, anguish, and determination of queer America. Giard has given gay history a memorable and poignant kaleidoscope of photographic portraiture." -- Thomas Sokolowski, Director, The Andy Warhol Museum
In 1985, photographer Robert Giard set out to create an archive of portraits of gay and lesbian writers from across the United States. His intention was to present visible evidence of their presence in our culture, to attest to their particular voices. The result is the most extensive photographic record of the gay and lesbian literary community ever undertaken. This book contains 182 of the more than 500 portraits Giard has made. The collection underscores the diversity of the gay population and encompasses a broad range of literary genres: fiction, poetry, drama, personal narrative, history, criticism, and political/activist statements.
Before approaching each subject, Giard immersed himself in the writer's work. Then, after a period of personal exchange and contact between Giard and the writer, Giard traveled to the personal setting, most often the writer's home, where the photograph was to be taken. Usually he worked with the existing light he found there. Each portrait in the book reflects the subtle transaction between the photographer and the writer, who both withholds and presents in varying degrees. For Giard, existing-light portraiture mirrors that exchange, as the subject simultaneously recedes into shadow and emerges into the light.
In the book, each portrait faces an excerpt of the writer's work, chosen by Giard in consultation with the writer. Taken as a whole, the portraits and excerpts encompass the many-faceted history of the the gay/lesbian experience in the United States over the past seventy-five years. The book also features a foreword by Julia VanHaaften, Curator of Photographs at the New York Public Library; an introduction by Giard, "Self-Portrait of a Gay Reader"; an essay by Christopher Bram on gay writing; and an essay by Joan Nestle on lesbian writing.

Book Description
Harold Pinter has been called "one of the most important playwrights of our day" by The New York Times, and his plays, including The Birthday Party, The Homecoming, and The Caretaker, have become seminal works in our literary canon. Pinter has always been reluctant to comment on his work, preferring to let his writing speak for itself. Now, for the first time, Pinter presents his won selections form a prolific body of prose, poetry, and political writings, offering new insight into the man and his literary and dramatic oeuvre. Various Voices comprises a wealth of material and a multiplicity of forms that demonstrate both Pinter's development as a writer and the stylistic precision he so consistently achieves outside the more familiar context of his plays. Through Various Voices the reader can trace Pinter's evolution, from his youthful explorations into the boundaries of his craft to the seasoned maturity of his later work. His nonfiction selections span "A Note on Shakespeare" (1950) to a letter to Peter Wood, the first director of The Birthday Party (1958); the short stories begin with "Kullus" (1949) and end with "Girls" (1995); the poetry ranges from "School Life" (1948) to the powerful and moving "Death" (1997); and the political writings illustrate the depth and lucidity of Pinter's views on human-rights issues around the world.
Customer Reviews:
The political writings are the turn off .......2006-08-13
If Pinter contented himself with Becket- Ionesco- like dialogues of the deaf, poetic renderings of fragmented human inadequacy then it would be possible to appreciate a certain poetic quality in him. But he like a good Stalinist has to dictate for us the nature of our political reality, and in doing so turns out to be a truly one- sided fanatic, choosing what to my mind, are the bad- guys in every conflict in the world. His hatred of America is in my mind sickening and unfair. He makes the best into the worst, and celebrates radical terrorists and other chic dirt.
Boo.
Boldness on paper.......1999-12-24
Harold Pinter speaks his own... dialect... without cliches.
As my native language is Greek I usually find the English language plain... not this time!
Harold Pinter here attempts to remove the blindfold from most of us and on our behalf...
Intelligent and impulsive.
Book Description
A native of Maine, Drummond served in the Confederate forces as a commisary sergeant. Drummond came from an abolitionist family, and his brother and cousins served for the North. An interesting twist on the brother-against-brother theme common in the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Worthwhile contribution to Civil War and New York City history!.......2006-02-08
This is a very interesting primary source for people curious about the role New York City played in the Civil War. With interest in the rich military history of Governors Island on the rise, the fact that Edward Drummond was imprisoned in Castle Williams should hopefully draw readers to this book. The book is a testimony to the fact that POWs were treated in a reasonably humane manner early in the war when exchanges were still possible. The editor examines some of the theories about the crass attitude of the higher-ups which led to the development of what eventually amounted to death camps like Andersonville. The book also captures the brother vs. brother nature of the Civil War that accounts for much of the sentimental attachment to its study. The editor, curator of the Military History Institute at Carlisle, PA, knows how to tie primary sources together. This book is an example of why it's so important to preserve journals and correspondence that have historical value. It's to the credit of southerners that they have a tradition of this kind of preservation.

Customer Reviews:
Rich and Illuminating!.......2002-03-04
"Dear General MacArthur" is a wonderful and very illuminating compilation of letters written by the Japanese to Gen. MacArthur during the American Occupation (1945-1952). Sodei's running commentary alongside the letters is full of powerful insight and helpful explanations which allow the reader to genuinely understand how, and why the Japanese wrote the General with their praise, adoration, pleas, and criticism regarding him and the occupation. It is a "must" read for any who are interested in, or are students of Japanese culture. The letters are moving, incredible, sad, and hilarious. Never in world history did a country ever "love" MacArthur as much as the Japanese did after WWII. As the Pulitzer Prize-winning and illustrious historian of Japan, John W. Dower notes in his foreword, "This is a rare gem of a book. We have nothing else like it concerning Japan." Compiled and expounded by the foremost authority on, and biographer of MacArthur, it is a book that all should enjoy.
