Book Description
In the eighteenth century, modern tourism was born as the English flocked to see the European mainland, the majority of them following what was commonly called "the Grand Tour." Geographically, it was a generally agreed-upon route that reached its climax in Italy; but the tour was also seen as a route to self-knowledge and as an unrivaled opportunity to form valuable social contacts.
Thomas Nugent's The Grand Tour was the single most important book articulating this new phenomenon of mass travel. It achieved the authoritative status of a Baedeker long before Karl Baedeker's birth. Nugent's great work, here reprinted for the first time since the eighteenth century, is a vital document in the history of tourism and the culture of eighteenth-century Britain.

walking and writing feat.......2003-06-10
This book is about a walk from south Portugal to Italy. As the writer is on a very modest budget he usually sleeps rough, but gets lots of hospitality on the way. This leads to all kinds of stories, mainly from old people and people who live a lonely life in the mountains.
He does not make his goal of Istanbul, but it is a very remarkable journy anyway, comparable to Patrick's Leigh Fermor's walk from Hook of Holland to Constantinople but without the luxury part in the latter book.
The book is very well written and keeps you reading mile after mile (page after page). I have quite a collection of walking stories, this was one of the first and I still rate it as one of the best.

Book Description
Between 1981 and 1989, Nicodemo "Little Nicky" Scarfo was boss of one of the most violent gangs in the history of organized crime, the Philadelphia-Atlantic City mob. Friel describes Scarfo's rise to power, his bloody feud with his arch rival, and the rise and fall of Scarfo's "Young Executioners," who used the streets of Philadelphia as their murder playground.
Friel also tells of his efforts to save an innocent man convicted of two mob murders from the electric air.

Driving the crooks out of town and straight to jail.......2006-05-05
Some books about criminal mobs by lawmen can fall into the trap of being too judgmental, self righteous and poorly written. This book though strikes the right balance and delivers relevant details of the rackets, history and personalities of the Philadelphia mafia and its mobsters. The book flows well and does not burden the reader with irrelevant comments and long winded sermons.
The success of police tactics in putting pressure on mafia members to turn informer and agree to testify against the mob in court is the link that enables Frank Friel and his fellow officers to build up cases against Scarfo and associates that eventually leads to convictions with long jail sentences and brings down the mob.
Scarfo's bloodthirsty and unstable leadership plays a large part in turning some mafia members (who realize that they also are in unmistakable danger of being bumped off by Scarfo) to become government witness's against the mob.
Friel provides a great deal of information about his conversations and dealings with criminals, the local police and FBI agents. He also does a sidetrack to provide relevant details of corruption in local government and areas of the Philadelphia police force, and this helps the reader to understand how severe the problem of organized crime became for this city. Happily in the end the good guys eventually win and drive the crooks out of town and straight to jail with long sentences.
An American Psycopath.......2004-12-08
A detailed look at the multiple Mafia murders in Philedelphia during the Nicky Scarfo era. Friel gives us a great story about the lives and details of Scarfo's gang, but the book can be hard to follow as many cases he mentions were not solved with certainty. We see that the war between Scarfo and the Riccobene gang ended with many bodies on both sides piled up. Treachery was Scarfo's style, and he had his soldiers kill most of his own gang due to his paranoia. This book should be a reason for anyone to realize that the mob life is full of treachery and murder, and that whether you are a capable and loyal soldier or not, your future is either ending up with an early death or a prison term.
Tactics & Strategy.......2004-10-02
are the strong points of this docudrama about the collapse of the mob in Philadelphia in the 1980s, when corruption was rampant in city government, its judiciary, unions and police force. Friel gives us strategy and tactics he used, including interview techniques and psychological gambits. He admits that his method would have failed if trust hadn't broken down in the mob because of actions by a godfather who was thought irrational and vicious by his mobsters. Friel shows how bureaucratic methods are couterproductive--everything from time wasted in report writing to conviction of the innocent. His suggestions for change are consistent with management theory about large-scale organizations. As an investigator, he's thorough and competent; but these very qualities sometimes make it difficult to read this book, as it suffers from heavy prose. There's an irony or two, but never a laugh. Investigating organized crime is serious stuff. "Breaking the Mob" is more penetrating than other first person books about true crime, but less penetrable. Worth reading, as a legacy of how the good guys got the bad guys & what it took to bring them down.
An excellent book, best yet on the most violent mafia family.......2002-09-06
The Mafia family in Philadelphia during the 1980s under Nicky Scarfo was by far the most violent group of killers, extortionists, drug dealers, and swindlers in the recent history of the Mafia. Scarfo was a sociopathic killer, ordering killings as a way of doing business, many of his victims were killed on a whim. As the bodies began to pile up, Lt. Friel, a homicide detective, was directed by the Philadelphia Police Department, his employer, to join forces with the FBI's Organized Crime squad.
Friel and the FBI worked well together, a cooperation that resulted in breaking the Mafia's code of silence, and Nicky Scarfo is now serving life plus 40 years. The entire top echelon of the Philadelphia LCN family went to jail with him -- those who he hadn't had murdered during his reign.
Friel is not only a dedicated and very smart cop, he is also a good story-teller. This is an excellent book from start to finish.
Must have for Organized Crime Students.......2001-08-11
I enjoyed reading this book. It was informative, just as good as a book written by George Anastasia titled "The Goddfella Tapes", In both books, they talk about Philadelphia "La Cosa Nostra" and how law enforcement try to defeat them...Wiretaps, Stake outs, asking questions and getting informants...These books are essentailly "Good VS Bad". Go and get them, you'll enjoy them.

Women considering hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms and health benefits should read this controversial, provocative book first. "Advertising and research dollars are spent trying to convince women that estrogen will cure everything from heart disease to Alzheimer's," writes John R. Lee, M.D., "but there is scant evidence for any of these claims and reams of evidence that synthetic estrogens are highly toxic and carcinogenic." Lee has studied the research and concludes that estrogen is not the magic bullet for protection against heart disease and osteoporosis, nor does it retard aging. Natural progesterone, instead, puts postmenopausal women's hormones in balance, says Lee. He cites study after study that indicates that natural progesterone, obtained in cream form, delivers what the usual HRT only promises.
"Menopause as a disease has been largely fabricated by physicians and the pharmaceutical industry," says this leader of a "quiet but powerful revolution" regarding HRT. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause covers the benefits of natural progesterone, the history and politics of the medical and drug establishment, the biochemistry and dynamics of hormones and how they get out of balance, and how to prevent hormone imbalance and stay healthy. Lee empowers you to ask hard questions of your doctor. Highly recommended. --Joan Price

Very Important Reading for Women.......2007-09-18
There is not a woman who should miss reading "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" and the companion books: "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause" and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer". As others have commented here, such books will give you very important, and unique, health information to assist you to make the best decisions for your midlife health. Don't overlook the books written by Sandra Cabot and Linda Ojeda which are excellent also. Each brings something different to the table. I have read about every book on the market on this subject and these five are the best. You may not find every statement made in these books to be necessarily true for yourself, and that is OK. Also, some people have misinterpreted Dr. Lee's books, reading them to advise never taking estrogen in any form and this is not so. I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with him when he gave a lecture in my city a few years ago. He certainly advised against the combination hormone replacement pills so routinely prescribed which contain Premarin and synthetic progesterone. These have now been proven dangerous in highly publicized studies, as Dr. Lee said all along. Using a bioidentical estrogen skin cream and balancing it with natural progesterone cream in specific measured amounts is not the same thing, and may benefit some women. As Dr. Lee explains, the route of administration, the chemical makeup, the amount, and other factors make a difference. Rather than take the opinions of other people as to what Dr. Lee said as truth, read Dr. Lee's books for yourself. He has illuminated the subject of natural progesterone cream and offers information you may not hear from your doctor. This cream has the same chemical composition as that made by your own body but is not subject to patent, does not require a prescription, and is available in health food stores. A key benefit of the progesterone cream is that it stands alone in working to rebuild bone that is rapidly lost during the menopausal years. Dr. Lee explains the full details and his well-documented research on this. Become well-informed and you will make the best decisions for yourself regarding your health.
Hesitant to recommend.......2007-01-23
I have worked in the health food and the medical fields. I have seen the "miracle cure alls" come and go. This book seems to say that using Progesterone is a super cure to all womanly woes. Having had womanly woes, I tried using progesterone for my endometriosis. It was not a cure-all. I'm sure that it helps some women, but be wary of putting all your faith in it.
Excellent work - you must read carefully.......2006-01-05
As a professional health specialist I have read extensively about natural progesterone cream and hormones since my diagnosis of breast cancer in 2001 and have been using it since that time instead of the drugs and radiotherapy recommended by my doctors. Dr Lee's work is remarkable but you must read carefully otherwise you will be under misapprehensions like some of these other reviewers who are still making mistakes about the difference between natural progesterone and synthetic progestins! They are molecularly different and natural progesterone does not carry the same side effects or risks that the synthetic ones do! I am the Hormone Health Expert for the CMA and Bio Vitality Limited where we also advocate hormone testing so that you do not supplement if you do not need it! It's really what the doctors should be doing before they give out hormones of any description.
Good advice - but remember everyone is different.......2005-09-21
I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids seven years ago, and through browsing the internet I found out about Dr. Lee and this book. I took his advice, and I must have indeed been progesterone deficient because using the natural progesterone did clear up the fibroids and repair some other problems I was having. Dr. Lee also has other good pieces of advice that most physicians will not talk about in the realm of nutrition and environmental toxins. Especially eye-opening was his discussion of how non-organic meats and milk are full of estrogen due to modern farming methods. In retrospect, he apparently was also right about Premarin, as in the past three years medical trials showed this drug to be so harmful that the test was in fact halted due to its initial findings. Prior to that it was being passed out like candy by physicians to practically all menopausal women. However, I do have an aunt who has been on it for over twenty years, closely monitored, and her quality of life is probably higher because of it. This is because for her, specifically, the drug works without side effects. As for me, as I passed through menopause and continued to take progesterone, it began to cause problems for me. My blood pressure went up, I was constantly hyper, I had palpatations, and my blood sugar went up and down like a roller coaster. I took a saliva test for my hormones, and my progesterone was off the charts. The nutritionist I was working with said to stop the progesterone immediately. She also told me that although natural progesterone is a godsend to many women, there are some, like me, that are very sensitive to the cortisol related to progesterone and have the woes I described. Within three months of quitting the progesterone, everything returned to normal with the exception of my thyroid, which still requires supplementation to this day, three years later. I guess the moral to this story is that there is always something out there - whether it be a pharmaceutical or a natural product- that helps some people. Progesterone is one of those natural products, but please monitor yourself with regular hormonal saliva tests to insure that you personally are in balance. It's just too bad that proponents of natural cures and traditional physicians have to look at each other as enemies and not realize that both have something to add to the quality of life.
Be careful.......2004-11-13
Dr. Lee is not an OB/Gyn. be careful when reading this book. Recend clinical studies are not included in this book.
Furthermore, Dr. Lee is widely disregarded by his peers.

ASIN: 0446691429 |
Book Description
The classic bestseller that has helped nearly a million women discover the answer to menopause is now revised and updated. Hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, low sex drive, hair loss, fibroids, and osteoporosis-most women will experience these or other hormone- related problems at some point as they age. In clear, easy-to-understand language, an internationally recognized expert explains the benefits of using progesterone and other natural hormones to reduce or eliminate menopausal symptoms safely and effectively-without the harmful side effects created by commonly used synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Dr. Lee explains why conventional HRT drugs can be harmful and offers an easy-to-follow non-prescription 'Hormone Balance' program that tells readers how to stay energized, strong, and sexually vigorous during the menopausal years and beyond.

Essential Reading for All Women.......2007-09-20
Women at every stage of life should read "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause", "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause" and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer". No one is too young or too old to read them. The late Dr. Lee had nothing to sell except the important information in the books. Of course everyone is an individual; naturally every statement won't apply to one and all, and that is OK. The books obviously are not a substitute for competent medical care; however, you make the best decisions when you have the most information. Incidentally, you may meet some people who have misinterpreted Dr. Lee's books and will say they advise women never use estrogen in any form. He strongly advised against the combination tablets that are made of Premarin with artificial progesterone. These are not bio-identical and have been proven dangerous in highly publicized studies, as Dr. Lee had said beforehand. Dr. Lee's outstanding contribution was in helping us understand the uses and benefits of natural progesterone cream, offering information you may not hear from your doctor ... this natural cream happens to be available over-the-counter. Unlike the synthetic prescribed forms, this cream has the same chemistry as that made by the body. It is derived from plants and is used transdermally for most effective results. It is a wonderful supplement for many women with many benefits but the key is that it stands alone in working to rebuild bone. Bone is automatically lost during the menopausal years and the progesterone was well-proven by Dr. Lee to work by his carefully documented studies over many years. Also excellent are the book "Menopause Without Medicine" by Linda Ojeda and the book "Smart Medicine for Menopause" and any other book by Sandra Cabot, M.D. Here's to good health and competent advice!
a must-have book!.......2007-09-16
I read the precursor to this book a few (OK, more) years ago - What Your Doctor May not Tell You About Premenopause - and it was absolutely wonderful. So I bought this book, and was not disappointed! The information and timely advice has changed the way I feel. Following it has given me new energy and brought my body (and life) back into balance. If you (or someone you love) is at, or preparing for, this stage of life, it's a must-read!
I learned a lot........2007-07-23
Fabulous book that I told my nurse practictioner about. Made sense to me. This book really explained the hormonal changes besides estrogen and causes of many of my symptoms. Worth the price.
Read if you are female (any age) or know someone who is........2007-04-19
As a man who cares deeply about his woman, I have an eye for other men who genuinely care for the well-being of women. That trait is evident in the author of this great book, and is my best reason for recommending it.
Please Be Careful - I Learned The Hard Way.......2007-02-03
Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be. They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first. A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side. I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone. Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones. I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you.
