    Book Description

An indispensable in-depth guide to everything that is gay in the world's gayest city. Spinning off from Gay Times Great Britain & Ireland this first city guide in the series covers everything that the gay traveller to London might need. From culture to clubs, pubs, bars, saunas, help and information. Tourist musts and musn'ts, social dos and don'ts, it's all here.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Of Dubious Value.......2003-01-01

Planning a trip to London in 2003, I purchased Gaytimes London with high hopes. Amazon describes it as an "in-depth guide to everything that is gay in" London. Wrong. The book's own "Forward" similarly reports "gay activity crammed into hundreds of different venues across the city: this guide lists them all." Not true.

The only comprehensive coverage is of clubs, pubs, and sex venues for gay men. In fact, the entire guide seems written for gay men rather than all GLBTs. Nothing wrong with that-except that the guide implies it's for all members of our community.

Now, what's missing? A lot. Most glaringly, this guide doesn't list any gay-friendly restaurants or cafes. Not one. It doesn't list any GLBT community groups: no churches, sports associations, political groups, etc. Nor, any 12-step programs. Nor, any women's health groups (although it does list 33 AIDS/HIV groups). The guide reports just one gay men's health club (Paris) and just one gay theatre (Drill Hall). C'mon, London has 7 million people, and 10% of that is.... The point here is that a lot of common GLBT gathering places-where tourists can meet locals-are just not listed.

Further, the guide seems awkwardly produced with an inexplicable organization. For example, the gay section lists "Accommodation" [sic] between "Saunas" and "Cruising Grounds." "Retail and shops" comes next, followed by "Escorts." And the listings are generally citywide, rather than by neighborhood, which makes it difficult to plan a night in a particular neighborhood. I would first need to pick the places I want to visit, then organize them by area. It would be much easier if the guide did that already.

Additionally, the type face is very small (perhaps, 8 point), which seems too small for reading in less lighted places like pubs, tube stations, or airports. The maps are small and generally unannotated. Very few web sites are listed, which is inconvenient and seems odd in this internet age. Finally, there's no index, also inconvenient and something I've never not seen in a travel guide.

I do like some aspects of the guide, like the "A Few Things" section, a very manageable listing of tourist sites in London. However, over all, Gaytimes London is of dubious value. I'll check out some other guide books. But I will also spend more time reviewing the various gay London web sites...

            5 out of 5 stars Helpful book.......2007-09-15

This book was very helpful, I have done a lot of sewing, but no upholstering, so I made a sample boxed, zippered, cushion with welting, and learned from my (minor) mistakes before using expensive special order fabrics.

4 out of 5 stars Very basic but informative.......2007-07-27

I have taken an upholstery class before, but have never tried to do a large sofa. I found this book gave me just enough information following the directions for an overstuffed chair to tackle the project. If I were a beginner, I don't think I would have been as confident using this book, but would have wanted something a bit more detailed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, at least for beginners like me.......2007-07-21

I bought this book because I couldn't afford to buy new living room furniture and wanted to at least recover the cushions. However, the instructions and illustrations were clear enough that I was able to reupholster both the couch and chair. And they look amazingly good--which, I confess, amazes me!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning upholsterers.......2007-07-16

This book has great pictures and illustrations and the instructions are easy to follow. I checked it out at the library and loved it so much, I added a copy to my own personal library. It is a great reference book and well written.

            5 out of 5 stars Upholstery Basics.......2006-11-07

This book is very helpful. The pictures are large enough to see essential details and the instructions are clear and allow a complete beginner to obtain professional results.

                    Book Description

For more than a decade, gardeners have been turning to a beautiful little hardcover book called Gardener's Latin, by Bill Neal. Neal understood that as Latin terms began appearing with increasing frequency on nursery tags and gardening catalogs, gardeners would need help. So he weeded through the Latin words that describe and distinguish among plants and flowers and compiled a volume of select, brief, clear definitions.

Gardener's Latin leads us down the path from abbreviatus to zonatus, turning aside here and there along the way for little-known horticultural facts and fables and the wisdom of

gardeners from Virgil to Vita Sackville-West. <

For lovers of plants, language, and beautiful books, this is a perfect book. The translation of botanical latin is helpful to anyone interested in the origin of plant names. The sketches, marginal notes and quotations, layout and size of the book make it a pleasure to use. The task of memorizing hundreds of plant names, which is my burden as a horticulture student, is enjoyable because I have this little book as my interpreter and companion. I've convinced all of my gardening friends to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Neat companion in the garden.......2003-11-29

When I got into gardening and especially with planting with native plants I started to pay a lot of attention to the latin names - but I didn't really understand what they meant. Hanging out with an older, very wise friend and his wife, we got talking about ceratin plants and they were rattling off the latin names and their meanings. It was amazing and so poetic that I wanted to learn more so I found this book. Its really been a great asset. Its set up alphabetically by latin name, and for each word, its less of a definition, more of a translation, e.g. palliflavens = pale yellow, squamosus = full of scales. Its a neat book - not as poetic in the translations as I had hoped but interesting nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Great for any Gardener!.......2000-08-25

I teach gardening classes with titles such as "Seed Catalogs are Seductive" and "Saving Seeds" and have recommended this book to my students. It is fun, and informative. Let's face it, you can't get far with gardening for fun, hobby or business if you don't learn some latin. Gardener's Latin makes it easy and explains all those things you've been wondering about. This is a fresh and enjoyable book and I think one that will be enjoyed by most gardeners. Add it to your wish list - the weeding season will soon be over and the reading season will begin.

4 out of 5 stars For Latin lovers and wordsmiths..........2000-08-05

Well, I'm a gardener and a wordsmith, and I think you must be both to really enjoy this book--and I don't recommend it to folks who like to garden but hate to worry about details. I can't picture someone who dislikes Latin, or questions why Linnaeus (they won't even know who he is) insisted on using Latin to develop his taxonomies, finding this book useful.

I've known quite a few "garden artists" who call plants by their local colloquial names, and when you carry on a conversation with them they persist in calling Digitalus "Foxgloves" when we who know Latin know that Digitalus refers to digits as in parts of hands over which gloves fit--that foxes would undoubtedly wear if they wore gloves.

I learned to forego showing off my Latin when I was asking serious questions of fabulous "old-time" gardeners. Latin terms are useful if you're trying to converse with horticulturists, gardening friends in other localities, or folks who have migrated from to your growing zone. Latin is also useful if you're looking up a name in a good garden book since all of them use Latin. "Gardener's Latin" contains a simple listing of Latin terms (135 small pages) and seems to have most of the more common terms.

                    Book Description

"Infant Potty Training" is based on an elimination training technique used in much of Asia, Africa and South America. In the book, the method has been adapted to the Western lifestyle in various ways, while still maintaining a natural and gentle approach. The word "training" is used in the positive sense of a loving exchange of communication and teaching/learning between mother and baby.

For this comprehensive, elaborate and exquisite tome, the author has scoured the world for proof that her infant potty training method really works . . . and to the ultimate benefit of babies, parents and environment. The book contains stage-by-stage guidelines, amazing photos from around the world, testimonials by practicing mothers, medical opinions by doctors and pediatricians, guidelines for late-starters and much more.

The book also provides historical writings on early training, dispels all the classical myths about infant pottying, and discusses the changes in child-raising philosophies that instigated the Western world's move away from this traditional means of toilet learning.

Background: Infant potty training, like many things in life, begins with conditioning. It can be approached in a rational and scientific manner as well as an intuitive one or a combination of both, depending on what works best for you and your baby. The rational approach involves timing and observation of elimination patterns and baby body language. The more instinctive approach involves intuition and "tuning in" to your baby in more subtle ways. Both approaches are discussed in detail.

Updates to second edition: a chapter for late-starters (families starting with babies over 6 months old); a long and detailed section on "potty pauses" and "potty strikes"; a selection of favorable Western medical opinions; a greatly expanded list of elimination signals given by babies; expanded chapter on "nighttime pottying"; more information on the "sensitive period" for infant potty training; additional photos from around the world; and some new testimonials.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic book covering everything you need to know!.......2007-10-05

This book covers all the topics related to infant potty training, and gives information for every and anything you would come across, by far my favorite book on the method!

I first read this book when I was pregnant, and it was this book that made me decide to give it a try. I'd never seen or knew anyone who practiced this, but this book gave me the resources I needed to feel confident enough to try it! It covers how to hold the baby in many positions - and with pictures which I found essential! It went over signals and cues with great detail, including the different stages babies go through and how those signals and patterns change. Knowing what to expect really helped me make it through all the different stages my baby went through. It really is all about communicating with the baby, and what a fantastic journey this has been for our family.

This book aslo has testimonials and stories from around the world and in the US, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Every child is different, even in the same family, and its great to see the many ways this method can be adapted for each child! It can be done with or without diapers, part-time or full-time, with support from your family or without. Just having the option to respond to this need, and teach a baby that a diaper isn't the only place to go has been a very positive part of bonding with my baby.

Thank you Laurie for writing such a comprehensive book for people who have never heard of the method to learn all they can! The DVD Potty Whispering is also a fantastic additional resource, I highly recommend it as well as this great book!

5 out of 5 stars Our baby is much happier now.......2007-09-18

Thorough and inspiring, my favorite part is the detailed section on babies' signals and cues for parents to watch for. This book taught us how to read and respond to our baby. She was fussy until we learned how to help her stay dry, and now she is much more content. Plus it's fun doing this with her. There are lots of helpful testimonials by parents who have used infant potty training with one or more children. The cross-cultural reports by doctors and anthropologists are fascinating. I also have Laurie Boucke's Potty Whispering DVD and recommend it too.

3 out of 5 stars The method is great, but the book isn't.......2007-07-31

While the method described in the book has definitely been proven to work, the book itself contains too many repetitions of the same thing. Another thing I didn't like was the fact that the book overemphasized the "environmental" factor, leaving the importance of the baby's health and hygiene kind of in the background. As a mother, I can tell: my baby's diaper rush free bottom comes before the environmental issues to me.

What I also would like to mention is that there are way too many photographs of peeing and pooping babies, and I'm not taking about pictures of cute tots sitting on the potty. I don't need to see dozens of pictures of young and old children in the process of going to the bathroom to believe that the method works. I was grossed out. It was way overdone. I don't think anyone enjoys seeing poop, even though in a picture, especially if it's not your child's!

Overall, I would recommend beginners to start with a different book, like "The Diaper-Free Baby: The Natural Toilet Training Alternative" by Christine Gross-Loh, which is a lot easier and more pleasant to read and which, basically, describes the same principle the "Infant Potty Training".

5 out of 5 stars Easy, encouraging read.......2007-02-14

I just finished reading Infant Potty Training and must admit I am intrigued and quite encouraged. We are expecting our fist and my husband and I see no reason not to at least try this method.

There are many naysayers to be sure, but the crux of this method is *communication* between the caregiver and child...and who would say trying to communicate better with your child is a bad thing?!

The other aspect that is nice is that there is flexibility inherent in the method, as Laurie Boucke reminds repeatedly that it is not an "all or nothing" method. Each baby is different, each parent is different, and there is likely to be a lot of trial and error with any parent/child dyad.

I do not see any potential for damage to a child's psyche (as negativity and discipline in the wake of mistakes is most certainly NOT part of this method) as many might claim. Also contrary to many people's argument, I think a parent CAN use this method and NOT have to be a slave to the potty, barely getting anything else accomplished. One has to deal with elimination one way or another, this is simply another option to consider.

This book is an easy read with Laurie Boucke's easy-flowing writing style and it is encouraging to any parent looking at the range of options for dealing with this fact of life.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible method, great book........2006-12-30

I had heard little bits about elimination communication in my early pregnancy, thought it sounded interesting and decided to purchase this book. My husband and I both read it, were inspired by the success stories and decided to give it a try.

We adapted the method for our own schedule and comfort level.

For my sons first four weeks of life, we dressed him in cloth diapers with no covers and gave verbal cues when he would relieve himself (we knew as soon as he wet w/out covers). At 4-5 weeks we tried catching poops, but I found it difficult because he mostly pooped while breastfeeding and it was too much for me to handle. By 6 weeks he wasn't pooping during every meal, but a bit after, so using timing, cues and intuition, we introduced the potty bowl with great success.

My son is 11 weeks old this morning and almost all of his poops are done on the bowl, and half of his pees. It's totally incredible. We liked the no-pressure attitude of the author and are so glad we have decided to use this method!

Fiona MacCarthy's background is in design, which brings a lovely perspective to her biography of Morris. MacCarthy also writes well, which is a plus in a book this size. She writes with affection for her subject, but without any of the bizarre idolatry with which some people approach Morris. He was a crashing bore as a poet, a mere amateur painter, a gifted fabric designer (but there are many gifted fabric designers), and a Socialist who knew only marginally more about what people actually do for a living than did Ruskin. Nevertheless, Morris was a volcano of artistic activity and heart-felt social ideas, and therein lay his genius. MacCarthy does an excellent job bringing Morris's genius to life in this first rate biography.

5 out of 5 stars The Final Biography on Morris.......1999-12-19

Most books about William Morris are like rainbows, filled with colorful images. Simply because he made so many wonderful and colorful embroideries, tapestries and patterns, and because color itself is something people like, and therefore buy.

This book doesn't have many colors inside, but it contains many black and white photographs, that are of great interest for those who like to read about William Morris and his time. And the combination of text and photographs create so many images in your mind, that you forget about color.

For the same people, this is the the final book about William Morris and his life. It's not the book to buy, if you want to know all about his printing of books in Kelmscott Press (there you have to go for Peterson's books), but it's the book about all the other stuff you want to know about Morris - and everything, you didn't know, you would want to know.

Having spent more than 5 years on this matter, Fiona MacCarthy has succeeded in making an extraordinary and therefore the final biography on William Morris.

More than 700 pages with more than 100 pages of source and reference notes.

It's a book to read and to read again and to use, when you're working with text about the period, the arts & crafts movement - or simply with Morris. Buy it, even if you don't have the money - wear the old jacket another year. You won't regret.

As long as it's out of print, you have to go to the library, where you should tell them to order some more books, so they print more.

                      Book Description

Lady Eleanor Butler, a handsome, unconventional woman, was twenty–nine when she met Sarah Ponsonby, a sensitive, retiring girl of thirteen. They developed an intensely close friendship, and ten years later in 1778, to the horror of their families, they eloped. After their dramatic escape across the Irish sea, they settled together in an idyllic cottage in Llangollen, Wales. There, amid scandal and innuendo, their unorthodox relationship blossomed, and their generous, civilized, and romantic way of living eventually became a legend. Their fame traveled widely: Lady Caroline Lamb and Josiah Wedgwood visited them, Wordsworth and Southey wrote poetry under their roof, and other celebrities of the day became cherished friends. Depicting a relationship that lasted over fifty years, Elizabeth Mavor’s beautifully detailed biography, first published in 1971, gives us a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of two remarkable women.

This is the life story of Sarah Ponsonby and Lady Eleanor Butler - the Ladies if Llangollen, who eloped together from their Irish homes in 1778, and settled in Llangollen, where they set up a household which was famous in their day, and ever since, as the `Ladies of Llangollen'. Mavor's work - originally published in 1971 - remains the definitive work on the subject, largely in the absence of any competitor. Mavor gives a detailed description the circumstances of the Ladies elopement, and their living arrangements at Plas Newydd in Llangollen. She situates the Ladies in the `society' of their day, to the extent that I wondered whether Mavor fancies - or wished - herself in similar circles. There are interesting questions about Sarah and Elizabeth's backgrounds (both Irish, on Protestant, one impoverished Catholic), and how far their backgrounds account for their choice of such and unconventional lifestyle, which might be better addressed by a contemporary author, with an understanding of the operation of `oppression'. On the question of whether the Ladies were lesbians, Mavor is straightforward in supporting their denial of such an accusation, and her presentation of the evidence is rather stronger than some more recent attempts to claim Sarah and Eleanor to the cause, without really considering the circumstances of their lives. However, there is room for an investigation of the subject which is more aware of recent work on the subject. The Ladies remain a fascinating and under-researched subject, and Plas Newydd is a delightful place to visit; in the absence of a new account, Mavor's work remains definative.

The screen play format was well selected to tell this little known factual love story of the Ladies of Llangollen. It's well written and leaves out much of the "angst" and years of separation of their real lives, focusing on the more positive aspect of their life together. Well done, Anna, can't wait for the movie!

The fictional part of the screenplay adds interest as to what is fictional and what is real. The authors factual addition to the book added interest to those of us who injoy non-fictional history. This is a "no put down" book, very compelling story.

takes place 300+years ago, I felt like I was reading a story that could happen now. The story and chararacters are timeless.
The characters, although written as a screenplay, came to life and their words on the page, flowed effortlessly, and the picture
of this story was crystal clear in my mind.
This is a story that could be taken as a lesbian love story-which it is. But it can also be taken as a story of great love that transends gender, time and place- I couldn't put the book down and read it in one sitting.
I can't wait for the movie!
