Book Description
At first glance, the relationships among tourists, tourism maps, and the spaces of tourism seem straightforward enough: tourists use maps to find their way to and through the sites of history, culture, nature, or recreation represented there. Less apparent is how tourism maps and those using them construct such spaces and identities. As the essays in Mapping Tourism clearly demonstrate, the extraordinary interaction of work with leisure and the everyday with the exotic makes tourism maps ideal sites for exploring the contested construction of place and identity.
Construction sites in the "New Berlin," Alabama's civil rights trail, Québec City, a California ghost town, and Bangkok's sex trade are among the spaces the essays examined. Taken together, these essays allow us to see tourist space as it truly is: contested, ever changing, and replete with issues of power.

Description:
How do multiple organizations make important decisions jointly and link such decisions together to form hospitality-related strategies? The article demonstrates an historical application of mapping strategic thinking in renewing an existing enterprise where the renewal process includes the participation of several principal organizations headquartered in two European, and one North American, countries. This article includes a case research study that offers detailed cause maps of the strategies employed in the 1992/1993 selling/buying and refurbishing the Duna Inter-Continental Hotel in Budapest. One of the participants described the new venture as ''a classic example of American companies using Austrian and German money to get a toehold in Hungary's expanding markets.''

Description:
Planning and booking a trip online is now increasingly common for travelers. This manuscript addresses two purposes. One is to investigate the important choice attributes of online travel agencies from which online customers may select. Two, the study identifies the current positions of seven online travel agencies in the perception of the customer. The data for this study was collected from the directories of seven universities through an online survey. In terms of the importance of online travel agency attributes, finding low fares was the most critical followed by security. Customers considered various attributes simultaneously, other than bargain price and security. Furthermore, the result from the multidimensional scaling showed how travelers perceived the seven online travel agencies in comparison with each other. The results also revealed that each online agency had some different patterns based on travelers' perceptions in terms of web features, user friendliness and security, and finding low fares.

Changing History: Women, Power, and Politics
ASIN: 0810122111 |
Book Description
In this memoir, Geraldine A. Ferraro reflects on her experience as the first and only woman nominated by a major party to run on the presidential ticket. This book reveals the process that led to her nomination as the 1984 Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate and gives a revealing behind-the-scenes look at campaign politics, especially the ruthless criticism directed at her and her family. Ferraro brings to life the dynamics of the women in Congress and how the different life experiences that they bring to the table affect the policy making process. She also gives a real understanding of the pioneering women, including Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem, Millie Jeffrey and many others who worked together to make sure that a women was on the Democratic ticket in 1984.
Ferraro's run for vice-president was an important moment in American history. The time is right for telling a new generation this story of women's collective political power and the difference women office holders can and do make to public policy.

Bad Urban Planning and the death of Public Life.......1999-03-07
Expecting a rehash of many of the now famous concepts of the "New Urbanism", I delayed actually reading this book for a long time. When I finally did it knocked me for a lovely, dizzy, exciting loop! Oldenburg may have put his finger directly on the reason why life in modern America has such an un-balanced, edgy, distressed feel to it. Bad planning! 50 years of letting officials and corporations extinguish our corner taverns, drugstores and other hang-outs has resulted in the extinguishing of our public lives. Something that work and family simply cannot compensate us for. And Oldenburg makes his surprisingly compelling case for these humblest of structures in a refreshingly brash, cranky tone. I began reading this book because of a certain technical interest and ended with my view of American life being, perhaps forever altered.
Heartfelt and extremely readable........1998-11-07
When was the last time you walked to your friendly, neighborhood tavern to shoot the breeze with the regulars? Oh, that's right. There is no such place. Find out why you'd be happier if there were.
It gets repetitive........1998-05-01
I had a hard time finishing this book. It has one good point: suburbs, by design, destroy the cohesion of communities. The author repeats this point (in my opinion) ad naseum throughout the book. He also idealizes community meeting places (the tavern, the drug store, main street) from the past. Nonetheless, I still think that we should all read this book. It gives at least a few hints about why we never see some of the people who live only two doors down form us. His solutions also might help us break down the isolation and anonymity of the 'burbs.

This was nice......there is a fifth one right?.......2004-07-05
Before I started reading this book I had the impression that It would sum up all of the incidents and all the drama leading up to it. But, I was greatly disappointed. When the book ended I was thinking, did the real ending of the book fall out? Then I turned to page and saw the epilogue, so I thought, "Okay this should sum things up for me." But, It didn't. All it did was to leave me hanging on a string, and wondering if I misread something about a fifth book. I suggest that you don't read it unless you have prepared yourself for dissatisfation. But really, Is a fifth book coming out? Cause if it is, I'll change my review around completely.

A True, Modern American Story.......2001-10-04
The Coffee shop days is the story of a teenage alcoholic and criminal named Ben, his life and struggles one the streets of San Jose, California, the book chronicles his adventures ((and misadventures)) in crime, drugs, relationships, and alcholism.
It does not get much more real than this, the author writes in a way that draws you into the story, the characters are very real and interact in a way that reminds you of people you know, or local figures of lore, such as the birdman of alcatraz.
If you liked American Beauty or The Catcher in the Rye, you will like this True american story.

Book Description
With this gloriously photographed and illustrated manual at hand, beaders can create awe-inspiring jewelry. It's the only current, comprehensive guide to working with cabochons--a flat piece of rock or mineral--and it covers all the basics, along with a range of new creative techniques and hot trends. Find out which tools and materials to use, which beads work best, and how to wrap them round the stones. Craft turned, pointed, twisted, brick stitch, ruffled, or scalloped edges, or add decorative fringe. For something dramatic, combine more than one cabochon in a single piece. Or, instead of natural stone, use dichroic glass or other found objects. Make a glittering brooch, funky bracelets, a wearable art necklace, and other showstoppers.
Customer Reviews:
Great Choice.......2007-09-25
I highly recommend this book, which has step-by-step instructions with diagrams and information as to where to purchase materials. I'm new to beading cabochons and I've made two projects, thus far, both look great.
Beaded bezels for cabochons.......2007-09-18
This book is very well done and explains all kinds of edgings, and techniques for bead-edged cabochon jewelry. It is good for learning techniques, different edgings, and also has attractive projects.
If you like to work with cabochons, make embellished beaded necklaces, you will enjoy this book. If you like modern, streamlined, geometric, precious metal jewelry, this is not the book for you.
Oh WOW!!!!.......2007-09-07
I was totally stunned by this book! I have been wanting to learn to do this for some time now, but could never find a book I really liked. Until this one. WOW! Everything about this book is superb--photos, directions, diagrams, ideas, writing...everything. I was blown away by the quality of the directions in particular.
The directions are clear and concise. You WILL be able to make a beautiful cabochon right from the very start. The photographs are outstanding, and as mentioned in another review, each one tells you exactly what techniques were used to make it. It's not a guessing game. My first cabochon came out PERFECT. My second one came out perfect. So did the third! I was so thrilled at--YES, I will say it--how EASY making a beaded cabochon really is. Many, many books have directions that are adequate, but need to be read and re-read several times before you understand exactly what you're supposed to be doing. Not this one! This is probably the least frustrated I've ever been at learning to do something new.
If you want to make a beaded cabochon this is THE book to buy. If you even think you might want to learn to make a beaded cabochon, this is the book to buy. If you've tried to do this before and were less than successful, this is the book to buy. This is the book that sets the standard. You won't be disappointed.
THE BEST!!!.......2007-08-27
This is an excellent book! The pictures are great! Instructions are very detailed and specific. Great project ideas, too.
I Can Bead with Cabochons!.......2007-08-21
Not all how-to books can actually get you to the desired end result, but this one does. The projects are beautiful, the photos are inspiring, and the instructions are thorough and well-written. Just wonderful!

I. M. Pei has designed some of the world's most elegant and powerful buildings. The revised edition of Abrams' 1990 book features a new chapter that covers Pei's work between 1990 and 2001-a flurry of creativity that included commissions for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the final phases of work on the Louvre, and museums in Luxembourg, Germany, and Japan.
Dozens of color photographs present Pei's buildings in all their splendid variety, while scores of revealing drawings, plans, and models, as well as personal and documentary photographs, make this the only comprehensive record of the work of an architectural giant, one who has won every important honor in his field.
356 illustrations, 65 in full color, 42 line drawings, 340 pages, 83/4 x 11"

The story and glory of I.M. Pei.......2005-10-02
When one thinks of the name I.M. Pei today, one's mind immediately goes to the Pyramid at the Louvre, Paris, or the Bank of China building in Hong Kong; perhaps one might think of the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. My first thought always goes to the Fine Arts Museum in Bloomington, Indiana, home of my undergraduate college - this building was still considered 'the new museum' when I started in 1982, and it became one of my favourite places on campus, not just because of the glorious collections housed there, but because of the interesting feel of the building architecturally, both inside and out. The kinds of angles and lines on the exterior are reminiscent of other gallery work of Pei; the interior with high-vaulted, complex-girder bounded windows as a lobby between the particular galleries on separate floors (mostly without windows, the better to protect the artwork) is a wonder to sit and contemplate.
This book traces I.M. Pei from his early days as a student (primarily at M.I.T. and Harvard) and protege of Zeckendorf, 'the most flamboyant real estate developer of his time' - Zeckendorf had one of the first car phones in the United States, almost half a century before cell phones would become commonplace. Zeckendorf and Pei made for an interesting team, going from bigger to bigger projects all over the world. However, in the end, Pei had to strike out on his own.
He had already begun to do this on projects like the Luce Memorial Chapel in Taiwan, whose angles and interior design were both inspired and inspirational, showing an unusual harmony of geometric form.
This book traces Pei through early struggles with less inspiring projects that he nonetheless managed to give creative flair, through to later projects that, having gained an international reputation, he could finally command with great creative freedom. He was now a recognised artist. He continued to do 'regular' work for corporations, schools, housing and municipal organisations, but he could also command the 'plum' jobs of significant and lasting structures.
Many of his works show a genius not only of design for the structures themselves but also an appreciation of the environment in which they are situated. Examples of this include the towers in Philadelphia, which soar over the much older buildings in the city without detracting from their own variety of 'Revolutionary' flair, and the Fragrant Hill Hotel in Beijing, which incorporated the Chinese sense of interconnectedness of buildings with gardens and nature.
This is a beautifully done book, with hundreds of illustrations throughout a text that is both informative and accessible, interesting in being written as a story and set of reminiscences rather than a straight architectural treatise.
Well written, a bit thin on actual work.......2001-09-30
This book is ideal for the reader who enjoys the traditional format of architectural history. It contains background information, interesting stories behind some of I. M. Pei's most famous works, and a nice biographical sketch of the architect. Arguably, it is also one of the more "comprehensive" monogram that features Pei's architecture.
Although the photographs are beautiful, this book lacks depth if you are planning to study Pei's work. The plans are too small and are only mere fragments of the buildings. Photographs are artistically taken and fail to give a sense of the entire spatial composition of Pei's intricate design. None of the buildings are examined critically.
All in all, if you are looking for an entertaining reading then this book is ideal for you. But if you are looking into critically understanding Pei's work, then this book is really insufficient.
Great book.......2001-01-25
I am a software engineer, but I love modern architectures. I.M. Pei is my favorite architect, this book gives me a lot of background information about some of the most important buildings Pei designed (do I still need to list some of them?!). I enjoyed reading the book so much.
an insightful reference book re I M Pei.......2000-01-03
A very user-friendly book about this humble but undisputedbly one of the greatest architect of this century. The book is humane in the sense that it potrays I M Pei as the architect, & also, I M Pei the person behind the limelight. It's only fair to have his legacy left behind in all corners of the world signifying how irrelevant that is of what race you are to be regarded as a complete person & architect. His genius has transcends borders, cultures, & time. I couldn't help noticing that the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, & the shrine in Japan, & probably other masterpieces weren't included in the book. Perhaps it's time to have the book updated.

Customer Reviews:
a woman-activist's view of Irish history.......2003-06-16
This very well-written, cogent description of pivotal events in 20th c. Ireland is from a woman-acitivist's point of view but focuses almost entirely on events around her and little on her internal experience of them. At times she says, "I was wild with grief," anger etc., but little else about her own emotional experience to the horrific losses she suffered. While she certainly has her own opinions about individuals and events, she does not belabor the reader with them. Her defense of Michael Collins is unique for an activist of her politics. Her ambivalence toward DeValera is obvious but she is not bitter or mean spirited in any of her opinions of others. This is a very interesting, readable memoir.
