Brigadier General Teté Puebla, the highest-ranking woman in Cuba's Revolutionary Armed Forces, joined the struggle to overthrow the U.S.-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1956, when she was fifteen years old. This is her story--from clandestine action in the cities, to serving as an officer in the victorious Rebel Army's first all-women's unit--the Mariana Grajales Women's Platoon. For nearly fifty years, the fight to transform the social and economic status of women in Cuba has been inseparable from Cuba's socialist revolution.

How Cuban women, fought, fight, and will fight.......2003-10-11
Malcolm X and Thomas Sankara both wrote about how the reality of any revolution, and any society is shown in the role of women. This is the story of Tete Puebla, the highest ranking women general in the Cuban army about how Cuban women fought and gained an equal role as combatants in the Cuban revolution, how revolutionary Cuban women played a decisive role in the transformation of Cuban society, about how Cuban women led the fight for literacy in the 1960s, and how Cuban women have fought in Angola, in Grenada, and wherever imperialism threatens the revolution, and how Cuban woman are ready to fight, arms in hands, against Washington's threats to overturn their revolution. This is no Cooks tour about the perfection of Cuban revolutionists, but it does show how Fidel fought for women's equal role because they were recognized as fighters. To me the most wonderful part is the description of how the revolution dealt not just with the orphans of revolutionary martyrs, but with children orphaned because their parents were in Batista's murderous criminal army. They were all treated the same, as children of the revolution. Read this book and you will recognize the depth of the lies that Washington, and Ottawa, and London throw at the Cuban Revolution. Read this and you will be able to look forward to the time your country can be transformed as Cuba was!

The choice book for learning about the Mafia.......1997-12-06
Out of all of the resources I used for a 30 hour research project on the Mafia, Under the Clock stands alone. It is not only a good resource, but is one of the most informative and interesting books I've ever read as well. Besides telling about the Italian and Irish mobs, it also tells of the famous mobsters, their lives and day to day activites. From the origins of the Mafia in America to the recent past with John Gotti, every bit of this book is accurate and gripping. As for readability, this book is written in the style of The Hot Zone by Richard Preston: it is factual information, but reads like fiction because of the sensationalistic subject matter. For anyone interested in the Mafia or old Irish organized crime, this will be a fast read. You don't have to know anything about the mob, or any Italian; this book will grab your attention and hold it until the chilling conclusion. One final note: the language used by the mobsters is not of the most pleasant kind and is used in this book as a device to underscore the mentality and dealings of the Mafia. It is not overly gratuitous with its profanity, but it is not for the feint of heart either.
It is an excellent book to read.......1997-07-20
I enjoyed the book because it does not tell just
about the Italian and Sicilian Mafia but also the
Irish and Jewish Mafia. The book is very acurate
in its facts. It is also keeps you interested if you are intrigued about how the mafia formed, what
it was like in the early days, as well as how they
operate. The book goes back to Don Giuseppe to Al
Capone and Dutch Schultz to John Gotti.

Customer Reviews:
Just Luscious.......2007-10-04
I've been knitting for nearly 50 years but this book made me convert to lace knitting. What a gorgeous collection! Not only are the designs beautiful but the techniques you learn while working on them are valuable. I particularly appreciate that the designs are charted as I am horrible at following written instructions. Of course my very favorite designs are the most intricate ones, Frost Flowers and Mediterranean Lace but I also appreciate the beautiful lacy tunics and gloves.
This isn't for the faint of heart but even if you are a beginner there is much to learn and dream over. I take this book out a lot and always find inspiration. I'm not good at making other people's designs exactly as they are presented but I've learned a lot about lace-knitting and have incorporated the techniques here into many other projects. This book is a valuable reference as well as a source of inspiration.
check for corrections to avoid frustration!.......2007-08-14
I've made several of the projects in this book, and I am looking forward to making more. It has beautiful patterns. But, I would have saved myself a lot of frustration and ripping out if I'd checked first for corrections to mistakes in the directions and charts before beginning my first project. All of the patterns I chose to make have had substantial mistakes in both charts and written instructions. A four page pdf of necessary fixes is available online, but I still lowered my rating of this book - the sheer number of mistakes is inexcusable for an expensive book produces by experience knitters. And they should have been corrected before reprinting - my copy is the fourth printing, still with the same mistakes.
a valuable reference .......2007-08-07
Meg Swansen has given new knitters of lace a useful and encouraging guide and reference. The smaller projects are especially welcome, a good way to learn a new approach to knitting without committing big bucks, many hours, and extensive effort. As a seasoned needlewoman, I feel qualified to say that small projects employ all the techniques one needs in big projects, so the big ones can be done better. Beautiful designs, instructions, and pictures. I am pleased to add this book to my library.
Beautiful knit lace for the Intermediate knitter.......2007-06-08
Rich in beautiful patterns with so many wonderful choices! I am knitting my fourth shawl from this book, having progressed from a "beginner" pattern to "advanced". Directions are pithy but complete so it helps if you have prior experience with charted patterns. Use lots of stitch markers and have a go. You will be creating wonderful heirloom pieces to be cherished by your children and grandchildren. My advice to anyone attempting lace knitting -- purchase good materials! Each garment is a labor of love and requires many hours to complete so you will want them to last. One of my favorite books!
Practical lace projects that I can use.......2007-05-04
I've already made a couple of the small items in the little laces section. The patterns are easy to figure out, with a good combination of written directions and charts. I got this at the same time as the Folk Shawls book by Cheryl Oberle. Both are good, but this one has many more items that aren't just shawls or scarves. It has socks, hats, a Real purse, some very cut gloves.
And, the photography is absolutely beautiful.

Book Description
The eight-year-old child is an exuberant, outgoing bundle of energy; he meets every challenge head-on, willing to try almost anything. Sometimes parents are amazed at the enthusiasm and excitement with which their child greets the world.
However, eight is also a time when the child begins to do a great deal of analyzing and evaluating, finding fault in himself and others--especially Mohter. How do parents help an eight-year-old through this up-and-down age? What should parents expect in their relationships with the child and how can life in the family be made easier? What will the child's relationship with friends and siblings be like? In the successful tradition of the Gesell institute series, Your Eight-Year-Old is a well-researched, highly accessible guide.
Customer Reviews:
Dated, but helpful child development reference........2006-07-07
I have bought these books each year as my son grows up. The social context is fairly dated, but the behaviorial and abilities information is very helpful. It has been reassuring to find his behaviors are not totally out of sync with one interpretation of typical development. I usually read the next age shortly before his birthday and refer to it thoughout the year. It is definitely an inexpensive and fairly helpful reference.
good, but.......2004-11-05
I liked much of this book, but thought that certain elements were outdated. For example, when the author states that the eight-year old's "walking area...is so wide that it's sometimes hard to locate him," I wondered what planet she lived on, where an eight year old can still wander around alone safely!
I love this series.......2003-08-26
My husband and I are in the process of raising three daughters, ranging in age from 15 to 6. Throughout I have found this series, although sometimes outdated in specifics, right on in terms of emotional and behavioral development.
I have found it comforting to see that the books define certain behaviors as stages, just as they are occurring. And I have felt less alone as I have battled some of the less desirable behavior.
These authors really know what they are talking about.
Review by a Mother of an Eight Year Old.......2001-10-09
Ames and Harber explore this livley energized challenging time in a child's life and provide insights for parents to guide them through this rollar coaster ride between seven and nine years old. The authors aim to offer parents insight on everything from relationships and family life to routines and birthday parties. Each chapter is rich with observation and empirical and anecdotal data. While you may not always agree with the conclusions the authors reach, credit is easily given to the skill with which they are able to articulate their observations. Your Eight Year Old: Lively and Outgoing is a practical systematic guide to better understanding eight year old behavior.
Helpful, but could have been better........2001-06-22
Having bought "Your 6-Year-Old" and found it terrific, we purchased this book when we were going through some problems with our then 8-year-old. "Your 6-year-old" was extremely helpful to us at the time, giving us lots of tools to deal with the changes our daughter was going through. However, "Your 8-Year-Old" didn't seem to go into as much depth as the 6-year-old one did. The descriptions of various personality traits and development phases seemed more general in this book than in the 6-year-old book. Although it was helpful, we felt that it could have gone into more detail.
Book Description
This first comprehensive biography of Charles M. Russell examines the colorful life and times of Montana's famed Cowboy Artist. Born to an affluent St. Louis family in 1864, young Russell read thrilling tales of the West and filled sketchbooks with imagined frontier scenes. At sixteen he left home and headed west to become a cowboy. In Montana Territory he consorted with cowpunchers, Indians, preachers, saloon keepers, and prostitutes, while celebrating the waning American frontier's glory days in some 4,000 paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures. Before his death in 1926, Russell saw the world change dramatically, and the West he loved passed into legend. By then he was revered as one of the country's ranking Western artist with works displayed in the finest galleries, his romantic vision of the Old West forever shaping our own.
Taliaferro reveals the man behind the myth in his multifaceted complexity: extraordinarily gifted, self-effacing, charming, mischievous, and playful, a friend to rough frontier denizens and Hollywood stars alike. The author also explores Russell's controversial partnership with his fiery young wife, Nancy, whose ambition and business savvy helped establish Russell as one of America's most popular artists.
Customer Reviews:
"THE" COWBOY ARTIST.......2003-09-06
Art critics spend much time arguing about the value of western art and as to whether it can really be classified as art at all. Some of the more snobby critics attempt to discredit western painters by referring to them as "illustrators" as if that changes anything. They argue that if an artist is commissioned by other than the loftiest of patrons or if their work is used primarily to illuminate a story then their art can only be classified as illustration and not as fine art.
As an art student I argued this one ad nauseam with my art professors. And invariably the work of Charles Marion Russell, my favorite ARTIST - period - would arise. But that's enough about small-minded art professors and their unwillingness to accept art wherever they find it.
The work of Charles Marion Russell (hereafter CM Russell) is accepted by thousands as arguably the best of the western genre. It remains the standard against which all other western pieces are judged. Russell also was an accomplished western wit who drew and kept the fast friendship of the king of western wit, Will Rogers. In his book Charles M. Russell: The Life and Legend of America's Cowboy Artist, John Taliaferro not only discusses the art achievements of Russell but also provides a biography that paints the life of the artist and the west Russell knew so well in the most vivid colors possible. And indeed CM Russell was the most colorful of characters.
Read this book and I'll bet you will at least become the owner of a CM Russell print and at most plan a pilgrimage to Great Falls to visit CM Russell's museum, studio and home.
"No one comes close"!.......2003-02-14
As a young boy he heard the words of Horace Greely, and indeed went west to seek fame, fortune, and adventure. After two years with Jake Hoover in the Judith, his dreams of wranglin', and ropin' came true at the O H ranch. Over time the home of the "Big Sky Country" became his perminant domain, and his mother Miss Montana, she blessed her son with a gift that would speek for many of his kind that ventured before him. He illustrated with brush, and canvas. He wrote in scripture, and sculptured in bronze. With his gift, C M Russell was able to protray what it was like to live in a time when spurs, the six-gun, and the feel of leather was a cowhands only cherrished parcel. He became the "Cowboys Cowboy", and the voice of the "Red-Man". Montana's dearest son had done what she wanted him to do. Russell for those who knew him was Loving, Kind, and Loyal. He never forgot his roots, no matter where he traveled. In the end Montana was more than proud of him. For she had raised him as Montanan. Over the years he became a Montanan. And at the end of the trail, he was buried as a Montanan.
