Customer Reviews:
A gripping, eye-opening and inspirational true story.......2001-05-26
Before I read this book, I had only a the vaguest of notions about what happened in Cuba forty years ago. Living in Australia, I was aware that it had been a time of crisis for the USA, but I knew nothing of the heroic story of the patriotic and courageous band of Cubans who undertook a doomed mission to overthrow the Castro regime.
Karen Alea's story of "Pepin" Almeida, a doctor and one of the leaders of the Cuban rebels, brings that significant episode to life in a very graphic manner. She successfully takes us inside the mind of this man, exploring his motivation and his reactions to the tragic outcome of the mission. Her description of the horrendous days of wandering in the swamps before the band of dispirited men were taken prisoner is very well executed, as is the story of their incarceration, and the cruel mental torture they suffered.
Pepin Almeida emerges as a deeply spiritual man whose strong faith is very inspiring to the reader, whatever his/her own faith may be. Yet at the same time he is a very well-rounded person with endearing ordinary qualities. The story of his wife, Toty, while secondary to the main storyline, is also most inspirational.
Karen Alea has an engaging style and a gift for making people and situations very real to the reader. More from this author, please!

disappointing.......2007-04-08
This is a superb genre novel for the first 350 pages. The pace is good. There are no missteps. The tension mounts. And the factual information and policy information that makes this novel important is accurate and well thought-out. (If you want to know all the facts concerned, read the nonfiction book While America Sleeps: How Islam, Immigration and Indoctrination Are Destroying America From Within.)
Unfortunately, the author makes one mistake at that point, but it is a big one and renders the rest of the book (where the good guys do win) unsatisfying. I won't reveal the mistake, of course, because this book is worth reading in spite of it. The logistics of the final battle are fairly good, although the number 1 bad guy HAS TO BE killed by Stark, not be an inanimate object. This damps down the ending even more.
The author also allows the number 2 bad guy to escape, obviously setting up for a sequel (which I don't think was ever written anyway). This was a big mistake. Besides, no set-up was needed, as the Invasion USA series demonstrates. This problem is not going away, and as long as it's around, there will be an audience for inspiring stories of this kind.
The only failure of nerve of the author was in making the number 1 bad guy a Colombian rather than a Mexican. No doubt there are Colombian drug lords operating in Mexico, but this choice looked like a copout. And making the number 2 bad guy Irish was too much!
Bottom line: Read it anyway, then read Invasion USA, Invasion USA Border War.
Good Enjoyable Reading.......2005-11-06
i enjoyed this one..it had a good storyline, great personable characters and kept me wanting to read it...
Good plot, but could do without the political diatribe........2005-08-15
After reading this novel I could not escape the feeling that this was several hours I would never get back. The writing was hokey and formulaic. The plot had potential, but with all of the political prosthelitizing garbage that was thrown in, the total effect was ruined. I suppose this would appeal to the average Texan, as this baloney usually does, but to someone with a little bit of intellectual curiosity, it just seems like so much unnecessary crap. To be fair though, I did read this immediately after finishing The Davinci Code, which is somewhat akin to listening to Roseanne Barr's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner immediately after hearing it performed by the New York Philharmonic.
Excellent and timely.......2005-06-23
Most true WWJ fans know that Bill Johnstone passed away a couple of years ago, so everything that comes out with his name on it now is ghostwritten. This is still an excellent and timely book that deals with the invasion of illegals from our southern border, and how the government refuses to stop it. Entertaining and informative.
JOHNSTONE HITS A GRAND SLAM!!.......2005-05-19
William Johnstone has written as timely a story as one could hope for. VENGEANCE IS MINE is about one man who dares to take on the tidal wave of terror that is the Mexican/US border. Johnstone throws political correctness to the wind and tells it like it is. A must for Johnstone fans--and action fans, too!

Vengeance Valley Review.......2006-03-04
Wheeler wrote an exceptional tale by depicting larger forces of the world directing his characters. He draws the reader into caring for the characters and you will find yourself cheering them on or mourning their losses. Even if you don't care for Westerns, this book is an exceptional read.
One Terrific Western!.......2005-01-15
I just finished reading Vengeance Valley by Richard S Wheeler and I certainly did enjoy it. I write gardening books (Allergy-free Gardening, Safe Sex in the Garden, etc. ) but I just wrote my own first western and I had been emailing different authors of westerns, asking them for advice on editors and agents and so on...and a good number of them suggested I read some of the books by Richard Wheeler, saying that he was considered by the other western writers to be one of the best new writers out there.
After reading this book, I would have to agree. This book was not the typical western at all, and had characters quite unlike any I'd seen in westerns before, but I liked them, they were interesting, smart, and different. Wheeler knows the West very well, and has an excellent sense of history that comes through clearly in his writing. I read a great many Louis L'Amour westerns, which I do love, and Wheeler writes another sort of western, but a satisfying one. There is real depth to his characters, feeling, they come alive on the page.
I plan to recommend this book to my friends who like a good western, and plan to buy some more of his other books and read them too. I highly recommend that you check out Vengeance Valley, and this author. If you've never read him, I expect you're in for a pleasant surprise.

5 STARS! THE DLNA YOUNITY REVIEWERS WORLDWIDE.......2004-02-10
"Keesha Smalls has been out of passion's game for a long time until she takes a second look at her best friend's son. The dashingly gorgeous Chris Walker brings more than flaming romance to Keesha's bedroom. Their illicit romance is perfect until Christine, Chris' mother finds out." A thriller classic and quite possibly, Hope's most captivating novel to date.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.......2004-01-17
Hope Clarke's latest literary contribution, the sequel to Not With
My Son, takes a sinister look at what can happen with unrequited
love. In VENGEANCE IS MINE we are catapulted into Michelle's world
where the story begins near the mid point of her twenty-year prison
sentence as she anxiously awaits a parole hearing. She has a
daughter that is ten years old and she has never been allowed to
see. She has had time to methodically plan the destruction of the
one person she once cared about but feels has deserted her on more
than one occasion. She wants revenge and wants it in a big way.
Since obtaining custody of his daughter, Chris Walker has become a
model father to Ashley. Aware that Michelle's possible parole could
cause problems, he starts to think about the things that matter now,
getting his family together. Chris has fallen in love with Simone,
the case worker that helped him obtain custody of Ashley. Simone
has also fallen in love with Chris and thinks of Ashley as her
daughter, but she has a dark secret that threatens her happiness.
The decision of the Parole Board throws everyone's life into a
tailspin.
In Michelle, Ms. Clarke has put a face on the phrase "a woman
scorned." In her very heart rendering and chilling page-turner, I
could feel Michelle's rage coming off the pages as well as the
unconditional love Chris felt for Simone and his daughter. Can
their love survive the havoc that Michelle will wreak? This book
had enough twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat. It
contained it all, love, sex, suspense, drama, compassion and a hefty
dose of wickedness. The combination made for a good book.

Customer Reviews:
Vengeance is Mine.......2005-01-10
This is an excellent book for anyone who likes old time thrillers and wants to read a classic. It was written when nobody really wrote about cops or dangerous detective stories, so it is the pick of the litter for risky cop stories. It is about a Private Investigator, called Mike Hammer, who goes undercover with a group of blackmailing thieves. They set married men up with models, take compromising photos and then threaten to show the pictures to their wives if the men don't pay up. Mike Hammer ends up meeting one of the unlucky men, who had recognized the model he was set up with, only the man ends up dead the next morning. Since Mike Hammer is in the same room as him the D.A. wrongly charges the P.I. with murder. The charge can't stick because the killing was made to look like suicide but Mike gets mad at the D.A. and consequently loses his license. But this is one tough P.I. and he is not going to let it go at that. He ends up searching the streets for the killer and runs himself into a whole mess of trouble that turns out revealing many strange characters.
This is also a good book for any one who likes the Film Noir genre, characterized by complex characters that don't make any sense in the beginning, especially for a young reader like myself. In the end everything came clear and because they were complex it made the story that much more thrilling and exciting. I would recommend this to anyone who likes fast paced and dark characters and a twisting tale filled with suspense.
More of the same from Spillane.......2002-03-18
Private Detective Mike Hammer finds an old army friend dead and leaves a trail of broken heads (and hearts)through New York City as he searches for vengeance.
Not the best of its kind, but enjoyable nonetheless. If you've read all of Chandler's novels, give Spillane a look.

Interesting book.......2001-07-07
I have several cats so I thought I would buy this book just for fun to see how smart my cats are.
I.Q. Test for Cat and Owner In One!.......2001-04-15
We're longtime fans of Miller's Dog I.Q. Test, so sure thing for us to try out the cat version once learning of it.
Our cat appeared to be super intelligent, and this test proved it out. This cat outsmarts our dogs, neighbor cats, squirrels, etc. She is sly.
Cat did much better than the owners did on their test. That's what is neat about this book. Both cat and owners get a score.
Anecdotes and stories are a delight to read. Also, submit your cat's results and see it published in new editions.
This is neat idea for all us cat lovers.
Best book available for Testing your cats IQ.......1999-07-31
This book is great! It really works. For any cat. Just select the answer that is CLOSEST to what your cat does and add up the points. It's that easy. And there is also an IQ test for you so you can see how much you know about cats. This is such a great book. Try it out!
A great gift for the cat lover in your life........1999-07-26
While sometimes no answer seemed to fit my cat, it is still an enjoyable book. It can make you aware of some of your cat's traits that you may have never thought about. Take the results with a grain of salt. Just like people, measuring the intelligence of a cat is not an exact science.
Ideal for owners of the average cat only!!!.......1999-03-23
This book is ideal only if you have an average cat. The book is good and well written. It has cute quotes, interesting facts and a terrific, breif history of cats. Also a few funny tails;that I find to be Animal Planet worthy. However, it's just not sutible for the not so average cat. It has limeted answers. If a person has a unusall(ie: my cat Sharky)cat it can be very hard to answer. Thus makeing it extremly hard to "rank" a persons cat. Overall the book is good and I do recomend it. If anything for novelty perposes;or a party gag!!!

More techniques in your armory.......2007-08-23
If you like and want to know how to constuct the kind of quilt pictures on the front cover, then this book will show you how, and give you lots of ideas. Joan gives an overview of style, fabric selection, fabric manipulation and construction methods. The major chunk of the book deals with various tree forms and, later, birds and nests. Towards the end there are few examples of Joan's gothic, pre-raphaelite women, and some ideas for finishing. The particular strength of the book is the layering, combination of manipulated and raw edge fabrics, and use of commercial tree fabric and hand-dyes and stamping to create semi-realistic trees. Joan talks us through her process, but she does not teach us how to LOOK at nature. The colour photographs and line illustrations are excellent.
It's great to have in your library, if you have already done some pictorial quilts. It is not really suited to a beginner.
A beautiful book.......2006-03-29
I have not made anything yet from this book, but my fingers are itching to. It seems to give very good direction and a good start for your own ideas.
Great stuff.......2006-03-13
If you are looking for inspiration on 'how to' this is the book for you. Very generous with personal techniques develpoed.
A MUST HAVE.......2006-02-16
I love books and tend to buy a lot on whatever subject I am interested in. This has to be my favorite pick of the fiber art books I have read. My dream is to someday take a class from Joan Colvin. She is an incredible artist and her book has just the right balance of technique and inspiration. She is truly gifted, as is any artist and or quilter who is lucky enough to own this book.
How to think like a great fabric artist and develop your own style.......2005-09-23
Joan Colvin acts as a gentle yet strong guide for anyone who wishes to find their style and understand elements of the design process in making a quilt. She generously offers some of her techniques and methods which work for her (and maybe you) and gives you great insight in how to express yourself creatively through fabric. However, as any good creative teacher will tell you, this is only the beginning of your personal creative process, and this book is not a project based one but instead will jump start you in other ways as you feast your eyes over her quilts (with details of some shown also). I just wish she included photos showing some alternative choices and decisions she inevitably had to make whilst she was making the quilts to illustrate this further because she does mention the value of photographing your options- but maybe I just can't get enough of her unique work.

Harville Hendrix has illuminated the paths to loving, long-lasting relationships in his New York Times bestsellers Getting the Love You Want and Keeping the Love You Find. Now, with coauthor and wife Helen LaKelly Hunt, he brings us to a new understanding about one of the most complicated issues facing couples today:
Receiving Love
Many men and women know how to give love, but many more undermine their relationships by never having learned how to accept it. We don't always realize the ways in which we reject appreciation and affection, help and guidance from our romantic partners. And, according to Hendrix and Hunt, until we are able to understand the meaning behind our behavior, our relationships stand to suffer. Ask yourself:
Are you reluctant to tell your partner what you really want or need?
When you do get what you've asked for, do you still feel dissatisfied?
Is it difficult for you to accept kind gestures, gifts, or compliments from your partner?
If you answered
yes to any of the above, this book is for you. With Receiving Love, you can learn how to break the shackles of self-rejection -- which likely began in childhood, when our caretakers unintentionally failed to nurture us -- and embrace real intimacy. Drawing on their renowned expertise, the wide clinical experience of Imago therapists, and their own personal experience as a married couple, the authors offer detailed, sensitive advice on how to turn a relationship between two well-meaning yet misunderstood individuals into a true, everlasting partnership.

"This groundbreaking book from the best-selling authors of Getting the Love You Want and coauthors of Giving the Love that Heals is the first to address the biggest unexplored issue facing couples today: Most of us are better at giving love than accepting it. We don't realize all the ways that our resistance to appreciation, praise, compliments, and accepting help from others hurts us and cripples our relationships. Many partners learn how to give love, but many more undermine their relationships by for-getting something that is equally important -- learning to receive it. According to the authors, the root of the problem is the self-rejection that began in childhood, when our parents and caretakers unintentionally failed to nurture or directly rejected traits, characteristics, or im-pulses when we were children. We end up rejecting in ourselves whatever our caretakers ignored or rejected in the course of our childhoods. When we become adults, this makes it impossible to let in the love we want and need, even when our partners offer it. As a result, we dismiss compliments, minimize gestures of affection, and create obstacles to true intimacy. In this book, Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt, co-creators of Imago Relation-ship Therapy, offer a definitive guide to breaking the shackles of self-rejection and embracing the love our partners offer. Receiving Love is a very personal book for Drs. Hendrix and Hunt, and much of their own journey is the inspiration for it. Drawing on their renowned expertise, the wide clinical experience of hundreds of Imago therapists, and their own personal experience, the authors are able to offer detailed guidance on how to conquer the problems that come from self-rejection and embrace the gifts that are abundant in every person's life, if only we knew how to accept them. With its groundbreaking theory, challenging processes, and inspiring examples, this book holds the key to loving relationships that last. "

Receiving Love.......2007-09-23
A very interesting and insightful book. Here are some representative excerpts.
God can be more easily found in human love than in the human mind - from the Brothers Karamazov
Ongoing interaction with a long-term partner can be an agent of transformation more powerful than any other. We have come to believe that it is the clearest way for transformation to occur.
Sooner or later in every relationship the initial attraction turns into a power struggle as couples find themselves facing in their spouse the same behavior and attitudes that drove them crazy in their parents. (Or it could be they project issues they had in the past with other people onto their spouse).
It turns out that loving your partner is the best way to facilitate your own personal and spiritual growth.
The impulse to step away from positive input is an indication that you have problems receiving love.
The most important commitment we (the authors) made were to end negativity and move toward amplifying the positive, even though we said many times we didn't know how to do that.
Separate Knowing = what is real and true exists independently of who is doing the observing.
Connected Knowing = Let me suspend my critical judgments for a minute and see if I can enter your world and try to feel the truth of what you are saying.
We are formed from every important relationship we have ever had.
No one comes to a relationship empty handed. There are all kinds of information, prejudice, wishful thinking, and expectations interjected between people before they really get to know each other.
Self-rejection and self-hatred are directly related to the problems people have in receiving love; i.e., "I'm not good enough".
What do butterflies and good relationships have in common? Both are colorful, but they also go thru 4 stages: For good relationships they are: attraction, romance, power struggle, and mature love (the full blown butterfly). For humans, volition is required for their transformation. Romantic partners have to become conscious (not act unconsciously), set goals, exercise patience and make good choices if their relationship is to progress to the next level.
We assign our partners characteristics we don't allow ourselves to have. We attribute a quality, fault, skill, motive, thought or feeling that originates from us. In a way we project onto them what we don't or won't know about ourselves.
One clue that it's a projection rather than an objective assessment is if it's veracity is asserted repeatedly, with intense emotion.
Being quick to anger or excessively self-absorbed are more often a symptom of unhealed wounds rather than a character defect. When people are mistreated as children, they don't know they have sustained a hit that strongly shapes the way they will connect to friends and other intimates in the future.
Kindness is an appropriate way of life when everyone is carrying the burden of previous psychological injuries.
Self rejection often masquerades as something else. It can be disguised as hypercriticalism of others or dissatisfaction and negativity about life in general. It can also look like perfectionism or shyness or a reluctance to extend oneself by trying new things.
A person who is having trouble receiving love will show it by consistently deflecting the positives and/or absorbing the negatives.
No matter how disconnected we feel, we are still part of the universal, interwoven tapestry of life. We cannot live in isolation, and we cannot heal alone.
We know that the reason people can't receive love is because they can't accept positive input for traits, talents, and qualities they've disowned, and they can't receive gifts their parents didn't approve of their having. In other words, self-rejection and self-hatred block their ability to take in what would be healing.
You cannot even heal your disconnection by loving other people or by loving God. You may compensate for your self-hatred by loving others, but you do not heal the breach within yourself. You must start loving in your partner those traits, habits, attitudes, and behaviors that give you the most trouble, in fact the very things he or she does that drives you crazy. It could be anything.
What you don't like or have rejected in yourself, you tend to project onto others, with the most on-target projections aimed at your partner. In order to relate to the parts of yourself that are missing, you project them onto your partner and relate to them in that form. You can experience the disapproval and dislike you have for yourself by disapproving and disliking those same things in your mate. This sounds far-fetched only because most projections are created in the unconscious. You don't know you're doing it.
The key is to understand, accept and `love' in your partner the things you hate, because then, in effect, you will be loving them in yourself. This works because the brain doesn't make a distinction between loving yourself and loving the Other. So when you approach the faults or your partner; i.e. your own projections of your partner's faults, with understanding, tolerance and acceptance, you get a double bonus. You experience understanding, tolerance, and acceptance for yourself as well as for your partner. Through repeated acts of loving acceptance, you gather to yourself all your neglected, abused, and frightening parts. Gradually you are restored to wholeness through the hard work of practicing acceptance.
What you need to do:
1. Make a list of the traits you would eliminate or exaggerate in you could in your partner.
2. Examine your list and know that these same traits are in some way connected to you. They are a mirror of the things you have rejected in yourself.
What you make up about your partner (or anyone else) and invest with energy is also true of you. The more you're trying to protect yourself from yourself, the more your projections will seem to you to bear no resemblance to yourself, and the more you will tell yourself that you are not like that in any way. Only when you stop projecting will you know that you've started to become whole.
Fear can make people deaf. It can limit people to talking, without truly communicating.
The inability to listen is always related to how deeply the person is wounded, and therefore, self-absorbed and closed-in.
A hefty and solid workbook.......2006-02-21
I am familiar with Hendrix's Imago workshop format, attended one years ago in NY with my significant other. It was one of the most challenging and difficult weekend experiences of my life! The relationship did not last, having NOTHING to do with the workshop (it was hanging by threads before).
Years later, a good friend who is a therapist, recommended Receiving Love. I felt quite resistant, based on my limited experience, however, since I know many couples who have benefitted from Harville's work, I decided my resistance must mean there is something for me to learn.
I am learning and opening my heart to issues I thought were healed. Maybe some stuff is never complete... at least for me, I sometimes need more fine tuning, to rehash areas of my childhood that may be lingering quietly in the dark recesses.
The book is a valuable guide (even for those not in relationship right now, like me) to clarify why things are not working in the "sample" couples. In fact, I think the sampling covers just about any potential issue, except perhaps extreme abuse.
The exercises are very challenging, I've only done the easy ones so far. The material is deeply thought-provoking, solidly researched and presented with compassion and intellect.
I appreciate the Hendrixes work, style and dedication to helping people discover themselves. This material offers the endless opportunity to heal yourself and help your mate heal their childhood wounds. Isn't that what we all want?
Give yourself and your partner a huge gift... read this book, then do the exercises. And talk and keep talking...

It's Not So Hard to Say "I Love You" Back........2005-06-26
According to these PhD authors, it is easier to give love than to receive it. It goes back to our childhoods when a parent failed to nurture and rejected the person who depended on him for her very life. When a mother is absent, and a mean uncaring father ignores the daughter, she ends up with a complex which clearly says "Nobody can love me, so why try."
When we get grown, even married to a noncaring, sick man, it is impossible to get the love we want and need. Sometimes, you just have to look elsewhere. And that's not good for the children. Oh yes, you can have children without loving the father of those children. Sometimes, it is forced on you; sometimes it is taken from you when an abusive husband forces the wife to have an abortion, because He does not want to spend money to raise another one.
In this book, there is a guide to help one break the shackles of self-hate and -rejection, and to accept love from others. So often, what they are offering is not love, so you must weigh the issues and try to come to a logical (not emotional) conclusion. Your very life depends on it.
First, you must accept what is offered, but not indiscriminately. Be sure it is love and not lust. All women are "used" on occasion, but if possible you must not give in. The authors of this guide to help you to decipher true love from false promises look to be a couple. There is a science to any relationship; learning to accept love from the person you do love will make you whole again. We all have the potential to love freely and devotedly.
However, you can love more than one man at a time!
Name that Attunement!.......2005-02-12
This latest book by Dr. Hendrix and Dr. Hunt speaks volumes to the necessary work of the couples I have seen in my practice over the years. This book is a natural progression from Harville Hendrix's earlier books for couples, singles and parents.
I highly recommend this book even if you think you *are* able to receive the love you want. You may be suprised. It might also help you understand your partner.
Attunement to a child is imperative for the child to develop a sense of self as Hendrix and Hunt point out. My work with lesbians and gays has always been focused on the non-attunement these individuals have had from society and parents and how this has negatively impacted their relationships.
Even though this book is written for straight couples, gay and lesbian couples will highly benefit from this book!
Book Description
As a young boy, Jacques Henri Lartigue (1894-1986) set about passionately recording his life in photographs, first documenting his domestic circle and later capturing the auto races, air shows, and fashionable watering holes of the Belle Époque. His images have so bewitched modern viewers that even scholars have failed to see them clearly.
In Jacques Henri Lartigue: The Invention of an Artist, Kevin Moore puts to rest the long-held myth of Lartigue as a naïve boy genius whose creations were based on instinct alone. Moore begins by exploring the milieu in which Lartigue became a photographer, examining his father's crucial role in teaching him the latest techniques as well as the larger context of the turn-of-the-century craze for amateur photography.
Two events brought Lartigue before the public eye in America and created the Lartigue myth: In the summer of 1963, the first exhibition of Lartigue's work in the United States was held at the Museum of Modern Art, which hailed him as an important modernist photographer, a forerunner of the art-documentary style of the 1960s. That fall, Life magazine published a feature presenting his work as an optimistic and sentimental prologue to World War I. Both treatments portrayed him as a naïve genius and Lartigue happily participated in shaping this new persona.
In Jacques Henri Lartigue: The Invention of an Artist, Moore successfully challenges the Lartigue myth using examples from popular magazines and the cinema. Illustrated with more than fifty of Lartigue's photographs and drawings as well as press imagery from the period, the book offers a radical reassessment of the photographer and his work.

Culloden from the Governments view.......2003-11-04
I originally bought this book to get my information about the Duke of Cumberland. Although it talks of Cumberland, he is but one of the many people viewed in this book. Mr. Speck gives us the events and political actions of the rebellion of 45 and the culmination of "the forty-five" at Culloden. It main focus is to show that the rebellion was not widely supported at all. That the highland army massed about the Young Pretender was relatively large; they represented a small minority when compared to greater Scotland. Mr. Speck shows that the Rebellion although feared was not supported and with any amount of resistance by George II and his administration it would have crumbled anyway. Many modern historians seem to romanticize the Young Pretender and his run through Scotland but we see more of the follies he lead and the fluff created by time. We also see that due to the "Aggressive" prosecution of the battle of Culloden the Jacobite rebellion all but ended and another rebellion never occurred. Good book. A bit tedious at times but nice to see a new point of view on an old and very important event in the history of Great Britain and especially Scotland and the Jacobites.
