The basic Billy book.......2005-03-07

This, of course, is the Billy the Kid biography that all later ones have had to nod toward, either in sympathy or contempt. By modern standards it violates most rules of popular history, with its many "reconstructed" conversations and events, which had no living witnesses shortly after the fact. However, Burns did manage to conduct long, direct interviews with many still-living participants, something later historians could not hope to do.

Historians tend to be either strongly pro- or anti-Billy, and it is interesting that this 1925 narrative hews to a sort of neutral line, depicting both the positive and negative aspects of the Kid's character. The early Kid biography supposedly written by Pat Garrett himself already depicts the Kid as a dime-novel superhero; by contrast, Nelson Nye's somewhat later historical novel, A BULLET FOR BILLY THE KID, typically depicts the Kid as a cowardly, psychopathic monster without a single redeeming human feature. Historians also tend to be violently pro- or anti-Dolan-Murphy, Burns comes down very much on the anti-Dolan-Murphy side, which is the side most more recent historians have also come down on. Burns also spends more time on the background of John Chisum than most Kid historians have tended to do.

Well worth your reading time if you have any interest in the most famous "outlaw" of the Old West.

A Wonderful Look Into A Short Life!!.......2002-03-31

Billy the Kid is one of the West's most famous outlaws, yet there is little in the history books to detail his short but very violent life. In addition, most of what has been written has been written in the later part of the 20th century and relies not so much on true knowledge as on what can be found here and there.

This book, original written in 1924, is wonderful because the author actually found people still alive who had known Billy the Kid and who had lived through the Lincoln County Wars. While these people were hardly young when interviewed, they still had very good memories of Billy and his life style. This provides a look that is often missing in history.

One area that was missing was any detailed information on the early life of Billy the Kid, but, as the author points out, much was lost and may never be known.

The language in the book is, at times, difficult to process, as it was written in the style prevalent in 1924, not 2002. And it is a language that is caught between the older American English and modern American English. Generally it is a smooth read, but does have a couple of rough spots.

This is a MUST READ if you really want to know about the portion of Billy the Kids life that ocured during the Linclon County Wars!!

This is an amazing quilt book. The blocks are easy to do and it is absolute magic when you are assembling them. It really reminds me of a kids kaleidoscope, as when you rotate the triangles, you get an entirely different look to the hexagon. I've had such fun with this book, and would highly recommend it.

I MADE A STACK AND WHACK QUILT FROM THIS BOOK. IT WAS THE FIRST "REAL" QUILT I EVER MADE, AND IT WAS SO EASY AND FUN. THE DIRECTIONS ARE EASY TO FOLLOW AND THERE ARE LOTS OF PICTURES FOR YOU TO FOLLOW. THE KALEIDESCOPE DESIGNS THAT IT SHOWS YOU HOW TO MAKE ARE REALLY NEAT AND EVERYONE LIKED THEM IN MY QUILT.

I'm still seeking to learn to fussy cut Lemoyne stars.......2007-05-28

I am frustrated with this book. I find the directions confusing and unclear. Also, I don't want to copy exactly any of the author's quilts and am having trouble translating her instructions to the size and layout I want. For one thing I'm having trouble using her charts to figure how much material to buy.

I'd previously purchased Stars by Magic by Nancy Johnson-Srebbro and readily learned to make eight pointed stars. Now I want to fussy cut them. I think that I need a class as this book alone does not do it for me.

Stack and Whack book.......2007-01-16

This book is good if you are not a beginning sewer. It has wonderful colorful pictures of finished products and good instructions. This is not an easy technique to master on your own but results are amazing once you figure it out, perhaps with the help of a teacher and the book as reference. Several different patterns in the book keep a person busy for many hours quilting this style.

Some interesting variations on Stack N' Whack.......2003-04-21

If you are just getting into Stack and Whack, get Karen's first book. If you really love it and want more ideas, this book will inspire you. It's such fun to see what Karen makes using today's large scale prints - she deserves a quilter's hall of fame award for inspiring many to play with prints! The mirror-image variations in this book are interesting, but I've had a hard time finding fabrics that are appropriate for them (the color saturation on the back needs to be almost as rich as the front for these to be effective since you are using both sides).

I decided to tackle a stack-n-whack for my second quilt and loved this book! The beginning couple of pages did a great job of explaining the basic process. I found that cutting out the pieces was the hardest part and once that was done, the blocks went together so quickly. I can't wait to make the same quilt again in different fabrics and compare the two results! The illusions in this book are also so amazing that it makes my quilts seem so much more professional because the design appears so complicated to a novice quilter!

The projects in this book are very well documented as to
how to pick out fabric and how to cut it to get the
dramatic effects for these projects. Very clear directions
with lots of pictures to guide you in assembly. You must
have a basic quilting knowledge and be willing to put in
the extra time to turn out these quality projects.
A beautiful book for someone who wants beautiful projects
that are a little more challenging.

Interesting, but not a keeper.......2003-04-21

If you are looking for Stack-n-Whack, this book contains only a couple of examples - the rest of the quilts are 8-pointed stars made by cutting the background squares and triangles in half so you don't have to do set-in "Y" seams. I tried piecing a star this way, and the piecing is a little easier, but it is not that hard to do the set-in seams and I don't like seeing the seams in what should be solid pieces of fabric. I'm a big fan of Bethany's Stack-N-Whack books but was a bit disappointed in this one.

This wonderful book should be required reading for any parent with a child who wets the bed. It explains to parents what bedwetting is all about and how to get your child dry. As parents, we all wish there was some wonder drug or magic treatment to help our child get dry. This book explains that medical research continues to show that a bedwetting alarm is the only way to "speed up the clock" and help your child get dry.

Yes, I like most parents, have tried restricting fluids, waking my child to go to the bathroom, setting an alarm clock and DDAVP (a synthetic hormone/drug that reduces urine output for one night). These things were not effective at getting my child permanently dry. A bedwetting alarm is significantly better than any of these approaches and around 80% of children can get permanently dry with an alarm.

This book talks about how to effectively use an alarm - which is very important if you are serious about getting your child dry.

Unless you are working with an alarm right now, or planning to in the very near future, don't bother with this book. It has nothing else to offer. It's title should be "How to use a Bedwetting Alarm."

We are not ready for an alarm yet and I did not get ANY other useful information from this book. Try Waking Up Dry instead.

If your child has a problem with wetting the bed, BUY THIS BOOK. After speaking with my child's pediatrician and urologist and getting little information from them, I bought this wonderful book. I was so happy to finally read a well written, easy to understand resource from an expert. The information is easy to understand and really helps parents with what to do about their child's wetting. I was happy to finally get the facts about bedwetting - instead of the shady web sites that keep popping up that try and get you to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for their magic "correction".

I was tired of hearing "don't worry, he will grown out of it". I bought an alarm that was recommended for less than $100, followed the advice in the book, and my son now sleeps dry after only 10 weeks. He is such a different child. Thank you so much.

Æthelwold's life and his political and ecclesiastical importance in the 10th-century reformation receive thorough scholarly scrutiny in this appraisal of his life and work.
