ASIN: 0881505307 |
Book Description
A guide to 50 hikes and backpacking trips in the northern Florida peninsula, ranging from State Road 40 to the Georgia border and east of the panhandle.
With numerous state parks and expansive state and national forests, North Florida provides the hiker with an extensive array of natural communities to explore. Forests of longleaf and slash pine flatwoods, coastal hammocks, desert scrub, and floodplain forests create welcoming habitats for vanishing species. The region's geology offers physical challenges for the hiker as welldeep ravines, rough riverside trails along steep bluffs, and giant sinkholes. Hiking in North Florida means the opportunity to camp along the state's broadest rivers, to clamber in and out of ravines and up and over relict dunes, to walk to the edge of sweeping vistas across prairies and salt marshes, to hike along vast lakes and bubbling springs.
The hikes described in this all-new guide range in length from 1 to 22 miles. Each hike description includes a topographic map, mile-by-mile directions, and information on distance, difficulty, terrain, and hiking time. An overview chart makes it easy to pick a hike for every ability. 50 black & white photographs , 58 maps, index.

D. Illig Pennsylvania.......2005-08-15
Okay book on basic parakeet information. Good book for children to read on their pet.
A cute little book about budgies.......2001-01-09
This is a cute little book about budgies, with a lot of info and good photos. However, you can find the same info in many web sites.
Book Description
An inspiring exploration of the goodness of chemical- and additive-free soap. 102,000 copies in print.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but . . . .......2007-09-02
An excellent resource, however I would have liked to be able to give it 4.5 stars as the author is fairly preachy about how wonderful vegetable oils are, and how meat and meat products such as animal fats are always bad.
Has good info but...........2007-03-31
This book and the other I purchased in the series (The soapmakers companion) have good information but the author is really out of the loop when it comes to the internet age and finding information on line. Also the recipes she gives are for gigantic batches of soaps. For the beginning soapmakers they are dang near ridiculous in size for batches. I found the book Smart Soapmaking by Anne L. Watson much more geared towards beginning and intermediate soapmakers with much better information including wonderful resources for lye calculators and recipe calculators that you can set the superfat discounts and water % as well. Was much more resourceful to me than these books by cavitch.
One of the best on the subject........2007-01-18
Highly recommend this book. Easy to understand directions.
Good resource for new soapmakers........2006-09-21
I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to make soap. After reading the book, I was hesitant with attempting to make soap since the author made it sound so complicated. (It took reading several other soapmaking books to get up the courage.) I use it more as a guide/advice book rather than a book for soapmaking recipes.
I have to say, though, that this book was written by someone who has had a lot of experience with soapmaking, and it is one of the few books I read that had a "troubleshooting" guide for soapmaking problems. My first attempt with soapmaking was a failure. The first batch came out powdery in some areas. The troubleshooting guide helped explained why.
natural soap book: making herbal and vegetable based soaps.......2006-08-17
I loved this book. Very helpful and easy to use
Book Description
The result of more than two decades of research and practice, The Endless Web present in clear, readable language a comprehensive guide to understanding and working effectively with the myofascial system, the 'packing material' of the body. Myofascia is a flexible network of tissue that surrounds, cushions, and supports muscles, bones, and organs. It also acts as a riverbed containing the flow of interstitial fluid, and is a critical influence on the immune and hormonal systems. In daily life, this connective tissue is an underlying determinant of movement quality, modd, alertness, and general well-being. The Endless Web is a fully illustrated guide to understanding how myofascia works, it supportive role within the body's anatomy, and how gentle manipulation of the myofascial tissue is central to lasting therapeutic intervention and how it can be integrated into any bodywork practice.
Customer Reviews:
Great view of connective tissue as a physical structure.......1998-12-26
Before I read this book I had never really considered the functioning of connective tissue as a "web-like" structure within which bone and muscle articulate. The authors contend, starting with embrionic anatomy and onward, that the c.t. forms a bed within which cells differentiate. From this view point of c.t. being a primary base for physical form, we are shown how all parts of the web are connected, and create "bands" that ideally are nether too tight or too loose. I didn't know much about Rolfing either, but apparently this bodywork deals specificly with c.t. Good book, great publishing company.
Book Description
Friedl presents, for the first time in book form, the art and life of renowned Holocaust artist and teacher Friedl Dicker-Brandeis. A labor of love, painstakingly researched and compiled over many years, this deluxe volume is being published in conjunction with the Simon Wiesenthal Center / Museum of Tolerance and coincides with the American opening of a worldwide traveling exhibition of the work of Dicker-Brandeis and her students. The U.S. trour begins in Atlanta, November, 2001. More than a biography, the book contains over 400 color plates, including reproductions of rare art, letters and photographs gathered from museums and private collections throughout the world.
Customer Reviews:
an inspirational biography.......2001-10-27
At first I thought the book, Friedl Dicker-Brandeis by Elena Makarova and Regina Seidman Miller, was just a beautiful exhihibition catalogue. There are hundreds of color plates of paintings so rich in imagination and expressive beauty, and there are designs for theater and costumes as well as plans for houses and rooms. She brought her unique inspirational creativity to every aspect of her life--creating order out of chaos. This was wonderful in itself, but as I read it I realized it was an inspirational biography, the life story of a creative, artistic spirit who despite the most impossible circumstances, which grew more and more intolerable, continued to work creatively and what's more, to teach others--children whose lives had been devastated. For those who managed to survive-- their memories of her are recorded here too. They were forever changed by having been influenced by her and the invaluable medicine she provided. The book offers insight into the influences on her own art education and the development of her approach to inspiring the creativity of children, a wonderful guide for anyone working in an artistic capacity with children. There are so many revealing letters and photographs of hers, and her friends, and from the children she taught which capture so much about this mysterious, irrepressible woman. The book is a treasure, a reassurance. I feel I must hold it close to remind myself that despite the evil in the world there are human beings have wonderful spirit and creative talent, and it will endure despite everything.
Friedl, an inspiration to all.......2001-09-08
It is hard to believe that this woman, artist, inventor, and heroine is not better known in the eyes and hearts of the world. As an educator and member of the Jewish community, I am shocked that I wasn't even aware of the remarkable contributions made by Friedl Dicker-Brandeis. The works portrayed in this book, the heartfelt letters she wrote, and the historical expose of Friedl's life were enriching. She has brought inspiration to many and should continue to be revered as a talented saint. Thank you Regina Seidman Miller and Elena Makarova for opening our eyes to such a remarkable woman of our past.
What an amazing story.......2001-09-02
This is a book I intended to glance over just to look at the art, but ended up reading it cover to cover until 3 in the morning. It is a in depth look at this amazing woman's life, as well as the beautiful art she created. This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn about history, and how people cope with major events in their lives.
terrific.......2001-08-31
This book is a piece of art and one of the most comprehensive on this amazing woman. It was an inspiring read! I recommend it everyone!

Readers of reasonable intelligence can know Dickinson.......2002-04-29
Dickinson is a difficult poet, and one of the main purposes of this book of the life of her and critiques of her poems is to
try to clarify any and all points where the meaning would not be perfectly clear to a reader of reasonable intelligence.
Bill Arnold makes use of poem variants recorded in the Johnson editions which had not come to light. His pages are full, detailed, and extensive, and in addition offer full commentaries on all her love poem. He tells us that his aim was to create a new understanding for the general reader, which would bring these cryptic poems to readers both in America and abroad. He offered, "The untold story of Emily Dickinson's 'Secret Love' can now be told in its entirety. She disclosed their affair and his name via acrostics and anagrams in the tradition of the French court-love poets." It does that and more. As sometimes exasperatingly obscure poems hit you, Bill Arnold details exactly which code unravels the mystery of who was the Master in her life. The poems are preceded by interesting prose passages and the book is rounded out with a biography of the author. It's a compact easy to read book and pleasant to handle. Now, readers can know that her secret love was Sam Bowles, a publisher of the Springfield Daily Republican, and an intimate of her brother Austin. In a book of this nature the problem is always that of trying to strike a balance between giving the reader too much help or too little. Bill Arnold is a Dickinson scholar who has put sufficient details to prove why the scandalous relationship did not surface in Emily Dickinson's lifetime. As the author comments, "Thus, the reason Emily Dickinson remained unpublished in her lifetime becomes self-evident." The secret-love affair is not so shocking as revealing of what her poems mean, and her anagrams do "now make sense." Although Bill Arnold may have given some readers a bit more help than they need, on the whole he seems to have struck a nice balance, and most readers will probably find most of his notes and commentary to be both helpful and illuminating. It is an excellent introduction to those who know little of the life and poetry of Emily Dickinson.
Summer reading love story.......2002-04-05
My boyfriend gave me this book. He bought it for summer reading when we go up to the cape. But he liked it so much, he gave me to read. Recommended for all women, if you like poetry like me. Really helped me understand the love story poems.
One star is generous.......2001-11-29
As a middle school language arts and literature teacher, each term I use Emily Dickinson to initiate my poetry unit as well as to generally elevate vocabulary and metaphoric concept in my classroom. And, as one who is a personal devotee of Emily Dickinson, her life, and her work, I've spent countless wonderful hours in the embrace of her poetry and her letters, and have become an avid student of her biography as put forth by authors such as Sewall, Wolff, Smith, Leyda, and Buckingham, among others.
This book and author, I find, are not numbered as deserving inclusion in my "among others" category. To begin with, the writing is so poorly fashioned that I would not, in general, accept it as a final effort from even a seventh grade writer. Additionally, Mr. Arnold's proposed solution to the "Master" question appears to be based more on salacious fantasy than on solid literary research.
The book is not worth the time, and certainly not worth the asking price. To rate it with one star is overly generous.
Reduces Emily's poetry to the level of cheap pulp fiction........2001-11-04
Emily Dickinson wrote POEMS, not autobiography, not history, but POEMS. She is a great American, now globally triumphant, and her writings deserve to be treated with far greater sensitivity, intelligence, and respect than is shown in this book, a book that reduces them to the level of cheap pulp fiction. So please don't waste your money. Buy her poems in a good edition such as those of R. W. Franklin or Thomas H. Johnson and read them. And if you would like to read about her life, read the excellent biography by R. B. Sewall, a scholar who gets his facts straight and who does not indulge in idle, foolish, and sensational speculation. But whatever you do, stay away from the present book. Emily Dickinson has much more to offer the world than the cheap thrill of an imagined romance.
