A favorite of cruise ship travelers and island vacationers, Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures invites anyone with a mask and snorkel to share the magic of ocean exploration. The new third edition covers hundreds of fabulous snorkeling beaches- places where one might drift across a blitz of dazzling corals or the remains of an ancient shipwreck.
It also includes complete vacation planning suggestions with details on diver-friendly resorts near the best sites and special guided tours throughout the Caribbean, Australia's Whitsunday Islands, the Bahamas; Bermuda; Turks & Caicos; Belize; the Galapagos Islands, Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the Florida Keys, Florida Springs and Hawaii.
Starfish Ratings from one to five grade each snorkeling site, whether it be coral reef and ship or plane wreck, for interesting marine life, visibility and water clarity.
Adventures within the new edition are included for every age, interest and skill level. They include island cruises, offbeat excursions such as the Galapagos islands, dolphin, stingray and manatee encounters, reef wildlife tours, ancient shipwrecks, the first snorkel-thru museum, snorkel-kayak trips and romantic sail-snorkel tours.
And it's Dolphin Friendly. The authors have personally inspected the few dolphin swims included to make certain the dolphins were rescued from circuses or shows, are well cared for, enjoy interacting with people and would have otherwise been destroyed. No facilities that take dolphins from the wild are included.
Resorts for every budget include secluded hideaways with reef snorkeling off the beach or within walking distance. Also featured are campgrounds, and resorts with on-site water sport shops.
More than just a travel guide, "Snorkeling Adventures" offers first-aid tips for coral cuts and sea stings, a special chapter on sharks, procedures and an introduction to gear for newcomers. Maps, color and black and white photos, drawings, detailed topside directions and special dive-tour operators are covered as are select spots for children, novices and experienced open-water divers.

For enthsiasts from the American continent only.......2007-05-12
I was surprised to find out that the title did not tell the truth. The writers did not include half the world. The indian ocean for example is missing.
The Fun of Snorkeling.......2006-09-13
This book is a must for anyone who enjoys water activities. It is a terrific book for beginners and also for those who are advanced in snorkeling.
Divers Delight.......2006-09-03
I love this guide. My dive vacations are strickly to take underwater photos and being able to plan ahead makes my life so much easier. It gives me the airlines, the resorts with prices, when I can expect good weather. It's like having a personal travel planner. I would not plan a Caribbean dive trip without consulting this trustworthy book.
Best snorkeling guide around.......2006-09-01
While most travel guides give vague descriptions about snorkeling or send me to places with nothing to see, Best Dives Snorkeling Adventures gives complete vacation planning details with maps and directions to terrific places in each destination to snorkel off the beach, sign up for a boat trip. IT COVERS all the best Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda snorkeling sites, the dive shops that will take you on boat tours and resorts that are especially dive-friendly. Great for families, novice and experienced divers.
Book Description
Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures By Joyce & Jon Huber If your idea of a fun vacation means rubbing noses with a friendly dolphin, hand feeding tame stingrays, fanning for treasure around shipwrecks or getting a manicure from a cleaner shrimp, you'll love "Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures, 2nd edition. Anyone who can slip on a mask and peer beneath the ocean's surface will treasure this 214-page travel guide to top marine parks, shipwrecks and shallow coral gardens--from Hanauma Bay, Oahu to the Stones of Atlantis off Bimini. Resorts with beach-entry sites--many just a few yards off shore-- highlight the text. Adventures include captive and wild dolphin swims, manatee encounters, turtle byways, the first snorkel-thru museum, sail-snorkel trips, kayak dives, and off-beat excursions such as the Oceanic Society's cruise to Midway Island, an area vibrant with nesting sea birds, monk seals, green turtles and spinner dolphins. Maps, drawings and black and white and color photos illustrate the text. Wonderful Informative Book.......2006-05-08
Everything you've ever wanted to know about snorkel swimming is in this great book, from "The Basics" to "Underwater Photography." Anyone in average health, who can swim, can don a mask and peer beneath the waters. Its low-impact aerobics and a great way to keep fit. Snorkeling has become a family affair with fish-watching and photography the main focus.
You will find tips on a variety of snorkeling trips and activities in this informative book. Choices vary from sail-snorkel trips on shallow-draft catamarans or trimarans, glass-bottom-boat tours, snorkel-with-the-dolphins tours; the list goes on and on. Each snorkeling site is graded for interesting marine life, visibility, and water clarity with one to five "starfish."
Helpful hints concerning snorkels, how to choose the proper fins, anti-fog solutions, and how to avoid sunburn are all discussed. Dos and Don'ts advise that you always swim with a dependable buddy and warnings as to what not to touch.
The best reef-front resorts, starfish-rated beaches and boat-entry sites are included as well as Manatee tours. Where to find shallow shipwrecks, the best coral gardens, underwater photo trips and snorkeling cruises are all included in this wonderful book. Also included are twelve pages of fantastic underwater photography.
If you are a snorkeling enthusiast, this book is a must have. It is a valuable guide to snorkeling sites and islands. Information includes detailed maps, photos, tours offered, and important information you need to make a wise vacation choice.
Repeats the excellent tradition of the 1st edition.......2000-12-30
The book has very brief descriptions of snorkeling sites at a large number of different places. Most, but not all are Caribbean islands. There are also descriptions of other "traditional" snorkeling places, such as the Yucatan Penninsula and Hawaii. And there are two large sections on snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Islands. Several snorkeling sites are listed at each separate location, and useful advice and information is given for most. All sites are rated on a 1 to 5 "starfish" point system. About the only criticism I have of the book is that much of the hotel information seems to be pulled directly from the hotel's advertising about themselves. A little more independent commentary would be nice. The information is still useful as a starting point. Finally, for each location, there is useful information on weather, how to get there, and when to go. If you have the first edition of this book, I see little reason to purchase this new edition, however. I do wish a few other sites or activities had been included, in particular snorkeling with whale sharks off Northwest Australia. That's something that interests me, but there seems very little information on it out there. If you travel to snorkel, and don't have the First Edition, GET THIS ONE!
Get wet with confidence!.......2000-11-22
This is must-have book for both the beginner and experienced travelling snorkeler. It is a thoughtful guide to the best places to visit and great tips on what to look for in the way of unique marinelife once you get there. It should be a companion in every dive bag.
Best Dives Snorkling Adventures.......2000-11-20
I found the reviews very helpful in deciding where I wanted to plan my nest trip... I went to the Galapagos with Aquatic Encounters, and it was so fantastic, it is beyond description
A terrific book for vacation planning.......2000-11-20
This is the best book for snorkeling I've ever found. The other books are so vague, they don't tell me much of anything. This one describes all the neat places to walk in from the beach and go snorkeling, how rough or calm the area is, how to get to various snorkeling beaches once I get there, whether the kids can safely swim in each area. It also has all the resorts that have snorkeling off their beaches, which is really nice for people traveling with small children and the airlines and travel stuff we need.

Best All-Around Guide for Dive Vacation Planning.......2006-09-01
The new, 2006, third edition of Best Dives of the Caribbean is packed full of dive-vacation planning information. It tells what time of year to go, the most popular dive sites with details on what to expect, depths, average sea conditions-- I get seasick if it's rough and prefer diving where the sites are ten minutes or less by boat, or better yet accessible from the beach. Indeed, some of the other one-desination guides are more suitable for the coffee table, but they don't tell me anything about the dive resorts, the $$ cost. I would not consider planning a dive-vacation to the Caribbean without consulting this gem of a travel guide. The dive resort write ups are detailed and give rates and package deals. Any, the author gives an email for additional questions.
Don't pack your fins until you read this!.......2001-03-06
I thought this was one of the best books for the travelling diver that I have ever read. A recent trip to Aruba proved it. Recommendations are still right on the mark.
Best dioves of the Caribbean.......2000-11-20
I loved this book... It helped me choose where I wanted to spend my next dive trip. I chose the Galapagos Islands. We went with Aquatic Encounters. They showed my whole family the time of our lives. I would never have found them if it was not for this book.
A superb source of information.......1998-11-01
I have bought both editions of this book, mostly because the first edition got so dog-eared that I wanted a clean one for vacation last year. The book is a marvelous source of information for both the snorkeler and the diver. The authors divide the book into chapters on individual islands, starting out with a brief but interesting history of the island, a topographical description, relative location map, best time to go, weather, and proximity to other islands. They then rate the island's diving locations, awarding from 1 to 5 stars, and provide another larger map visually locating the sites. Each site is described in detail, with info on depth, sea life, currents, visibility, photo ops and difficulty level. As if that weren't enough, they include some (but not enough!) beautiful photos, and end each chapter with yet more info on dive operators (detailed), beaches, other activities, dining, accommodations (with rates, addresses and phone numbers), medical facilities, documentation requirements, currency, driving, local customs, departure taxes, etc. I've been exploring the Caribbean for almost a decade now; I take this compact book with me everywhere. My only complaint: I wish they covered more islands!

Not Rabbit Friendly.......2004-02-16
Seems to aim for the commercial producer. A guide to pet rabbits shouldn't have info on slaughtering methods, dressing the meat and pelts, etc. Care information is outdated.
cool.......2000-02-07
this book is really cool. I can't beleive how someone could be so good with rabbits like they are. I have a rabbit & this book has helped me so much. I thank you so much. She would be dead if you didn't write this book. She says thanks too.
More for the Professional Rabbit Owner.......1999-12-28
The original publishing date was in the early 1970's, and no information seems updated(even the pictures). The content leans more toward rabbit breeding and is more for someone who wants to learn about all the various breeds of rabbits rather than those who want to learn about their first pet rabbit.
Numerous color photos of various types; helpful care tips.......1999-10-14
This book is filled with a wide variety of colored photos of the different types of rabbits. It also provides a good description of rabbit care and housing. In addition, there are medical tips and photos illustrating the results of poor care.
This is a useful guide for the young or old rabbit owner who may wish to explore other breeds. Excellent photos. Compact book.

Good book.........2006-02-10
This is a great book, includes many more unusual types of rodents (jirds, degus etc). However it contains nothing about ferrets, only rodents and rabbits. This book is translated from dutch, so there are lots of errors, and the grammer can be amusing at times.

Book Description
Never before has such an extensive and beautiful collection of brooches been assembled, or photographed to such perfection. Marjorie Simon, a distinguished presence in the jewelry field, chose the pieces, and every one features the fine craftsmanship of a top contemporary jeweler. The breathtaking and provocative styles range from traditional to very avant-garde, and the brooches come not only in gold, silver, copper, and wire, but also in glass, porcelain, paper, and other more unusual materials. They're forged, soldered, chased, and cast, and surface embellishments run the gamut from enamel and metal foils to patinas and inlay. In some cases, detail images and artist's comments accompany the full-size photos. Jewelers, students, collectors, and anyone who loves exquisite items will appreciate the amazing diversity on display here.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2006-10-01
Lark has a series of books presenting well photographed, contemporary fine crafts. This book is a good survey of what is being created in brooches (compared to the bracelet book, which is not at all complete or even a small survey of contemporary work and should have been a gallery brochure). If you are teaching in art history or fine crafts areas, this is an important resource for students, collectors, museums, and libraries.
EXCELLENT SOURCE OF InSPiRATION!.......2006-07-26
Amazing examples of all kind of imaginable brooches. You will start creating your own.
500 Brooches Review.......2006-03-20
This book, as all others in this series, is put together very well. But...the brooches are the poorest examples of exemplary contemporary artwork I have seen. In my opinion, 98% of the entries are unprofessional in their initial design and completion. Most are unwearable and impractical as brooches and are the farthest stretch of someone's artistic imagination in regards to fine artwork. Putting it bluntly, the bulk of the "artwok" in this book is rubbish. Embarrassing.
a great snapshot of the creative jewellery of the early 2000.......2005-11-25
Looking through this book, one cannot help wonder at the creativity of the human mind. How can there be such a diversity and invention in an object as small as a brooch? This book is a great snapshot of where contemporary jewellery (brooches) is at in the early 2000. The pictures are beautiful, there is just enough text to understand what you are seeing and know about the creator, and the way the pieces are put together (curated?) is excellent.
For the jewellery designer this is a fantastic resource book, and for anyone else, it is a great introduction to an artform not always known or appreciated and to the discovery that jewellery can be far more a craft.
The only thing against it: it is perhaps too heavily weighted towards American creators: I would have liked to see more Japanese, Australian, New Zealand creators.
Fairly Good Reference Book.......2005-09-19
After looking through 1000 Rings, I was a bit disappointed in this sequal. Although the photography is excellent, it doesn't represent the same range and variety of styles. I did enjoy this book however, and will use it as a source of inspiration - it just didn't provide as much benefit as I'd hoped for.

Full of solid, practical advice and plenty of how-to pictures, Hanging Baskets is an ideal title for those wanting to maximize their success with this versatile plant grouping. Focusing on combinations with different varieties, training possibilities, containers, and growing conditions, you may be tempted to hang a basket from every possible area. With so much detail on one particular type of plant, you'll find plenty of direction for growing healthy blooms and foliage, no matter what your specific needs may be.
Designed to be a complete do-it-yourself guide, don't let the small format of this book fool you--it's absolutely jam-packed with ideas for all styles of gardens, and as always, publisher Dorling Kindersley manages to take fairly complicated projects and reduce them to a manageable size that even the gardening novice can handle. Practical considerations are dealt with firmly--choosing healthy plants is an essential beginning, and without intelligent placement and pruning, your baskets will never look their best. The listings by size, bloom shape, foliage color, and optimal conditions are very specific, and new gardeners will find all kinds of useful tips.
Inspirational ideas are plentiful--the garden photographs are lush and detailed and provide all kinds of unusual notions for creating a truly unique gardening space. Whether you're looking for a row of window boxes filled with bright geraniums, or are ready to create your own traditional slatted boxes, you'll find options for all your projects involving lovely and versatile hanging baskets. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant!.......2007-09-15
I've been on a children's book and/or education kick, which has meant discovering for the first time the world of book guides for children. My intention is to only *buy* books of lasting home-library value; everything else, and there must be so much, can come from the public library. This book has exceeded all others in advising on what references, storybooks and educational resources belong in the home of a child who loves learning.
I recommend the NYTimes Books for Children and the The Read-Aloud Handbook book as well, but it's the Hirsch book, specifically the "Core Collection" recommendations, that has led me to the most interesting learning materials!
I also love that he's not afraid to refer to or at least mention quality out-of-print materials. What good is the Internet's vast book culture if not to find out-of-print materials that are wasting away on a back shelf in some store across the country? For example, he mentions a history series by Olive Beaupre Miller. I found a woman in Texas who was selling her set, they came yesterday, and man am I ever jealous! How come I didn't get to read those when *I* was younger? Another example of why I think OOP book should not be ignored in these kind of guides is a treasure I stumbled upon in a used bookstore the other day. "A Classical Storybook" by Morris Bishop is a treasure trove of Greek and Roman stories from the histories and poetry of the era. Enchanting! I went online, and as it turns out Morris Bishop was BFF with Vladmir Nabokov, was a hugely important Romantic literature scholar and apparently an altogether lovely man. Suffice it to say, I have ordered the medieval, Renaissance and Romantic storybooks for my children as well. If more reader guides mentioned these treasures of the past, I believe the spike in demand by interested parents would lead many of them to be reprinted. God love the profit motive!
Anyway, back to Hirsch: I'm relatively comfortable when it comes to identifying quality resources in the humanities, social sciences and liberal arts, but I'm a little foggier when it comes to most kinds of science and mathematics. I was thrilled to see that Hirsch gives those subjects their due as well, and I've already been thrilled to discover through him H.A. "Curious George" Rey's amazing books about constellations, astronomy and the night sky (The Stars: A New Way to See Them, Find the Constellations). What a treat!
I've been scribbling all over this book, taking notes, starring items and dog-earring pages. I can't say that's the case for most of the booklist books I've read, although expositionalish :) introduction to the Read-Aloud* guide will definitely been getting multiple reads from me.
Anyway, this book is highly admirable, and I hope it, itself, has many printings, revisions, expansions and future editions to come. Invaluable.

You have to help the kids, since the schols will not...here the the guide to all the sources.
Worth every penny.......2006-03-06
This book is a must-have for teachers and librarians, but most importantly, for parents who want a culturally literate child. As a teacher (grades 4th - 12th), I recommend the Core Knowledge Series by the same author as the framework for home schooling. Please don't wait, parents! Get this book and start collecting these resources! You can't rely on any school to teach your child all they should know. If you are reading this, you are a conscientious parent. Your child's school may well be focused on teaching basic life skills such as manners and self esteem, because not all parents are conscientious. After all, parents are ultimately responsible for their child's education. Even if you aren't home schooling, get this to help you supplement your child's education. Get the "What your K/1st/2nd...6th grader Needs to Know" books, too. You will be amazed at how much these books enrich your child's education, and ultimately their life.
Very helpful book.......2005-04-01
This book is very nice to have if you homeschool. It is very easy to use and a great resource. It is broken into curriculum areas including Visual Arts, which has really helped since I did not know much about the subject.
Books to Build On.......2005-02-25
This is a useful book but one I don't believe you need to spend your money on as it is available at the library for free - and it's not a book you need to refer to daily or even weekly. Check it from the library, make yourself a list of what books it lists that you need from that, and return it.
