Customer Reviews:
Simply the greatest guide to snowsport resorts for the west.......2007-09-10
This is an amazing book. It covers the answers for the questions that skiers and snowboarders have prior to visiting resorts they've never been to before - what are the trails really like in detail - where can we afford to eat - what tricks are there to getting around in the resorts? -Which resort leans more to our particular skills?...and so much more...
The tips are cool, the quips are fun, and it is just so much better than those stale books that spend 2 short pages and tell you no more than a resort's website.
Can't decide where to go skiing? You need this book!.......2005-11-03
Since I live in the deep south and don't know a lot of skiers, this book fit the bill for me in deciding where and when to try my mountain legs in the West. Not only does this book describe all the major resorts in detail, but it compares them in table form one with another. If you are spending money on airfare, lodging, ski rentals, tickets ect, this book has the potential to keep you from making an expensive mistake. It also has lots of technical skiing tips also. The information is very accurate. The only thing that is sparce is individual lodging reviews. I guess that is beyond the scope of a book like this. The folks that write the book are real SKIERS, not just travel writers. I highly recommend this book, and looking forward to a new edition when it comes out.
Amazon.com
In keeping with the Unofficial Guide philosophy, this book is written to serve the skier as the authors deliver the honest goods on more than 100 mountains and ski resorts. Want to find the best-formed moguls, make the first tracks in secret caches of powder, locate the best runs for novices, or reserve the perfect place to warm up at the end of the day?
Reading this book--which has complete coverage of the northern and southern Rockies and the West Coast--is like sitting down with a local or a ski instructor. Scattered with useful tips like "Polishing Parallel," "Stormy-Day Strategies," and "Sierra Cement," The Unofficial Guide to Skiing in the West is sure to become a well-worn reference for skiers of all abilities. --Kathryn True

Customer Reviews:
Most comprehensive guide.......2002-10-21
If you are a ski fan (like me), and you are eager to ski in great West Coast ski resorts in California, Colorado, and Utah -- look no more. You get this book and you have all the information you need for a few years.
Could use a few improvements but is good........1999-11-21
It is the only book I've seen of its kind. The info. is great. The maps are useless. It could use to have its section on deals on lift tickets (and the like) beefed up.
Most skier friendly guide out there.......1998-10-21
Gets to the meat of the subject quickly. An easy breakdown of the mountain by ability levels and recommended places to eat and sleep. 1 drawback are the shadowy trail maps.
Lots of details, could use more.......1998-08-29
This is a really thorough book on just about everyplace out west in terms of ski mountain descriptions -- runs and the like. Whoever was in charge of editing the book's illustrations must not have seen the text, because although the illustrations show runs and lifts, only the lifts are labeled -- but the text usually mentions several runs in the context of a single lift, rendering the descriptions confusing and the maps somewhat useless. The descriptions of the ski areas themselves seem to be a little skimpy
The beginning of the book describes some of the "how-to" stuff in terms of getting good deals and the like, but doesn't go into enough detail about these kinds of things, specifically in reference to particular areas. Surely they must be familiar enough with major destination areas to suggest specifics.
Overall, it's a good read, especially for those unfamiliar with out-west ski options.
A detailed, informative, and sometimes opinionated guide........1996-12-27
An excellent guide covering most major ski resorts in the
Western U.S. and some in Western Canada.
The guide contains a rating section that compares resorts
on almost all imaginable skiing criteria (e.g., beginner
terrain, bumps, consisteny of fall lines, etc.), but it's
real strength is in the detailed descriptions of the skiing.
Each author writes about one region,
providing a thorough overview and a sense of the style of
skiing available at each resort.
There are are some minor inconsistencies. Some resorts get almost
agonizingly detailed treatments, while some (e.g., Whistler
/ Blackcomb) get a more cursory treatment than the sheer
volume of terrain would suggest. The skiing suggestions are
quite specific, naming lifts and runs (good), but the
trail illustrations provided for each resort lack sufficient
detail (bad)- I found that the book works best with an
actual trail map in hand. Finally, one might argue that
some worthy areas were overlooked, including some Canadian
areas and at least one US area (Mount Baker, Washington).
This guide is a must-have for any serious skier- I've used
it to check out more than a dozen resorts, and Lito, et al.
have yet to steer me wrong.

Customer Reviews:
Classic but poor style and lack of objectivity.......2007-09-27
This book is not just a history of the mob but is part of that history, as Tukus was a prosecutor of the first big cases against the mob. As a prosecutor of the criminals Tukus is hardly objective in his views of them, their lives and so forth. Their horrific deeds speak for themselves but he feels the need to condemn them often, as if preaching to the jury. The stlye is overwhelmed by the 50s journalistic background of the co-author, and I like others find it annoying in its excess of adjectives.
Nevertheless, if you want to know the subject, this is a must read. And with all its flaws, it is still really fun.
The Canary That Couldn't Fly.......2007-09-14
Turkus did a ton in uncovering this layer of the inner workings of the mob. The Syndicate was a real threat that, when organized, was dangerous for anyone involved, which was anyone they wanted to involve themselves with. Introducing the Brownsville gang was a great backdrop to laying the foundation to the National Syndicate.
Interesting, though, is that Turkus uncovered so much, and yet when Valachi sang more than a decade later it turned out that Turkus had missed a completely different organized crime with much more secrecy involved around it. This makes sense, in a way, since most of the men testifying and being put away were unable to be "made" men and thus not privy to the inner workings of the real mafia that held the power.
Otherwise a great telling of the Syndication and the 7 executions that resulted from the Canary that couldn't fly. Seeing Lepke go down was amazing, and you can truly see the power of an Anastasia at work when Reles mysteriously jumped/fell out a sixth story window.
A little curious though. Turkus made a big deal about Anastasia's role in Marinzano's death, that he had an Ace of Diamonds in his hand, and yet the cover of the books has a dead man with an Ace of Spades. Is this Maranzano or another death? And if so why the striking similarities? I would have liked to have had these questions answered.
All in all, I would recommend. Read before or in conjunction with The Valachi Papers.
5 stars.
A fine collection of crime stories.......2007-06-22
Burton Turkus (1903-1982) was assistant district attorney for Kings County, New York (Brooklyn) in the early 1940's, and successfully prosecuted a number of members of Murder,Inc., sending seven of them to the electric chair. This is the chronicle of his efforts to try to bring down this organization of professional killers. I would have liked this book even more if a section of photos of the main characters had been included, but there aren't any. This is an interesting story, well told and, as the expression goes, it has the added advantage of being true. Readers need to bear in mind that the book was written in 1951 and some of the figures, like Anastasia, were still alive at the time. Later scholarship has disproven some of Turkus' theories about the mob organizations, but that still doesn't detract from the entertainment value of this book.
Good reading........2007-04-21
Glad that I did not live in that era!!A good account of men's cruelty.
One of the first.......2007-01-29
Very interesting in that the style of writing reminds one of gangster movies of the period. Definitely a classic of the genre that has stood the test of time.
Book Description
Highly collectible household objects designed and signed by name artists of the 1950s and 1960s are presented here. The artists have become well known: Georges Briard, Sascha Brastoff, Mark Bellaire, Frances and Michael Higgins, and others. The modern styles of hundreds of glass tumblers, ash trays, and household accessories that are artist signed(often in gold)have become popular again, 40 years after they were made. The leading designer and marketing wizard of this style is Georges Briard about whom much written here, and many of his designs are pictured, along with much work by the other prominent featured artists. Here is mid-century design at its most popular level.

George Briard Collectors.......2001-08-10
This is the only book I have been able to find on George Briard glassware. Chapter 1, over 50% of the book is devoted to George Briard collectibles. Chapter 2, about 20%, is about Sascha Brastroff. Chapter 3, about 10%, is about Marc Bellaire. Chapter 4, about 15%, is about Higgins. Chapter 5, about 5%, contains more designers and a section showing all of the artists signatures. Each chapter includes the history of each designer. The pictures are absolutely fantastic and include a price range for each item. I have been able to identify and purchase many of the items included in this book. Obviously, this is one of my FAVORITE books. I highly recommend it to any one collecting 50s & 60s glass.

Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing!.......2004-05-27
When chosing our first dog I researched several possible breeds and got my information from books, breeders and the internet. This is one of the books I purchased and felt very let down. There is very little information that is specific to the breed but lots of advertising, especially for Nylabone products which my dog hates. If you really want good advice from someone who knows and understands this breed, contact Briard Rescue. The lady I spoke was happy to answer all my questions, gave me the most accurate and helpful advice (on the breed and breeders) and even invited me to meet her Briards. Don't waste your money on this book. PS I did chose a Briard and she is wonderful!
Briards.......2002-04-27
I found very little about Briards and more of a general book on dogs. I was quite disappointed actually. Since I own a briard I was looking for something specific about the breed. I have found more at various web sites than in a book on the subject!
MORE ADVERTISING THAN BRIARDS! HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED!!.......1999-07-06
What's cooking!? In order to understand the above, let us look at the quote which appears on the back cover of this book: "This book, illustrated with over 175 full color photos and drawings, presents sensible, easy-to-follow recommendations about selecting and caring for a Briard." What this author conveniently forgets to mention is that 3/4 of this book is comprised of GENERALIZED CANINE TRAINING & PRODUCT ADVERTISING. I was dumbfounded at how little this book actually delves into Briards. Here's the breakdown: The entire length of the book is 192 pages. 62 of which is solely focused on Briards. The remaining 128 pages deals with PRODUCTS, TRAINING & GROOMING TIPS, that can be applied to any canine breed. I was highly disappointed, considering that books on this breed are scarce as it is.

*The* book to get on this subject.......1998-10-23
If you're interested in this breed, this is the book to get. But it won't tell you how to look for a breeder or how to housebreak your puppy; rather, it's a serious, scholarly look at the history of this ancient breed, with original translations from source documents and detailed analysis of both the French and American standards. Highly recommended.

"Must have" book for knitters.......2007-08-05
Besides the clear instructions, photos, and illustrations, this book has so much info that you never find in pattern instructions. I agree with all the other good things previous reviewers have said.
Note to publishers: All instruction books should be spiral bound as this book is. I can't for the life of me know why they all don't do it.
Every Knitter needs a reliable text!!.......2007-06-08
I bought this book on the advise of an experienced knitter and I am
very pleased with this purchase. The instructions are will written and illustrated. She offers multiple techniques for knitting situations.
The book fits in my knitting bag and the spiral bind an added plus!
MUST HAVE BOOK .......2007-05-12
Short and to the point: If you don't have this book, buy it. If your budget is small like mine, make a wish list and tell your family and friends it's in your wish list. OWN it.
A hearty thank you to Nancie Wiseman for writting this book!!!
Beginner's Encyclopedia.......2007-05-09
Clear descriptions of many knitting techniques with great pictures. I just started knitting and was confused about some pattern's stitch descriptions. This book cleared them up. It is a closed spiral bound book, handy to keep open while practicing a stitch or method. It's worth buying for reference.
Not just endings.......2007-04-17
I highly recomend this book. It has some of the clearest examples of how to get your finished project put together without the usual cursing and bleeding all over the yarn. Clear pictures, plain english information, very understandable instructions even to a beginner.
I will note, however, that you should look this book over before you START a project. many of the best finishing techniques mentioned in the book have to be set up at the beginning, by casting on an extra stitch, or ending each row a certain way. This is in no way a fault, but many people do not look at this book until the project has started, and it should be consulted during the planning stages.

Perfect alternative to the sickeningly cute.......2007-03-18
This book was exactly what I wanted for my son - it wasn't full of cutesy little cartoons that he wouldn't care about later, had all the necessary pages, and left a lot of room for personality. I love the pockets on the various pages, generous room for photos, creative categories, and the big pocket in bag. The only two improvements I would have liked were a bigger binding (doesn't close well when you start adding photos, etc.) and a few more milestones (some pretty big ones are left out).
Still by far the best I've seen - buy it!
Love it!.......2007-01-09
I have the same book for my firstborn and I loved it so much, so I decided to get the same book for my second child. It covers the milestones, and lots of other things that new parents what to keep for their kids - there is for example a pocket for the first hair when it's cut etc...
Well organized, simple keepsake.......2006-11-04
Very nice for boy or girl. Nice layout, simple for recording memories and storing a small amount of baby's first papers from the hospital.
Easy milestone keeper.......2006-11-03
Its like a milestone keeper for dummies!! I am not that organized, but this book makes it easy to jot down firsts. I have it for both of my children, so no one feels slighted.
It covers everything for the first year not to mention it is a really cute book! You will love it, when you look back and read it!
Nice design, but ..........2006-07-27
The book is modern, clean, minimalist and elegant. While I liked the space for Dads to write, I didn't like that it had so many lines for each section. The book is very free-form. Great if you're used to journaling, not so great if you don't write regularly on the topics of family and memories.

Description:
The current study deals with public apologetic speech in the context of political rhetoric. The main argument of this paper is that different cultures support their members with different cultural rhetorical resources for a public apologetic speech event, and that one must pay close attention to the way an apologizer draws on historical, social and political contexts. This argument is illustrated by two rhetorical case studies. More specifically, we conduct an in-depth analysis of two public apologetic speeches given by two political leaders of two different cultures: the former American president Clinton, and the former Israeli Prime Minister Barak. By analyzing these two speeches, we aim to illustrate the way in which cultural rhetorical resources frame and transform the rhetorical situation.
Book Description
On a visit to his elderly artist-parents, Teller found a dusty portfolio of cartoons that his father drew in 1939. Teller asked about the people in the drawings: the streetcar operators, waitresses, soldiers, bums. And Mam and Pad (Irene and Joe) began to unfold the hidden history of their world before their Bundle of Joy came along. Out came the Hobo Shoebox, full of letters Joe wrote while riding the rails during the Great Depression; their daring photos as art students, eloping to escape their feuding families; and the War Trunk. Readers stand beside Teller as Pad teaches him why using a ruler in painting is evil; join Mam as she interprets the designs hidden in Joe's "art pancakes"; and enter the world of a most peculiar, philosophical, funny, and loving family.
Customer Reviews:
heartwarming tribute to a father.......2005-02-27
While having dinner with his parents, Teller learned that his father had drawn a series of cartoons which he had been unable publish in the Philadelphia Inquirer, and he realized that he did not know much about his parents' lives before his own. He spent time talking to them about their childhoods and how they met, the result of which is this book of reminiscences, quotes from correspondence, and cartoons, drawings, and paintings. While Teller's parents may feel that their son's celebrity has overshadowed their lives, this book shows that their lives are quite interesting in their own right. Teller's father traveled to all of the 48 (at the time) U.S. states, and to Alaska, mostly by rail as a hobo. This is a small, high-quality book printed on heavy paper with illustrations on nearly every page. It's a pleasant tribute from Teller to his father (and mother).
When parents care their offspring turn in to needle eaters??.......2002-07-04
I liked this book and I'll tell you why.
Although fans of Penn and Teller may pause before buying since its not a 'trick' book nor does it serve as a peek behind the curtains/drapes of Teller.
What it does provide however is an emotive trip down memory lane and gives a personal perspective of the time in which the Tellers' lived.
The best I can description I can give is it's a book version of when kids used to bring grandparents to school to talk about the war. It's touched with humour and Tellers obvious affection for his parents.
A real good feel good book.......2001-09-21
This is a good 'feel good' book. It's not without good humor, storytelling and charm, done in a entertaining and non-campy way. While the plight of Teller's parents is not unique among Americans who's formative years were spent around the time of the Great Depression, Teller's way of telling the story is. He interweaves his father's original cartoons and letters with his own insights to provide a sum maybe equal to something greater than the parts alone-a nice collaboration.
All the Tellers seem very genuine. Reading this book makes me want to know them more. You get a real sense of Teller's parents and their personalities, I almost feel like I've spent a weekend in their home. They sure seem like good people.
I absolutely loved this book!.......2001-02-09
I can't imagine anyone not being completely charmed by this book, and the wonderful people who inspired it. An extra bonus is the incredible art: cartoons, drawings, paintings and even a glimpse of sculpture on the dust jacket. But most of all, I loved the intimate, real glimpse into a time in history from the viewpoint of an ordinary "Joe".
The raconteur carries on into the 21st century in style!.......2000-12-14
According to Webster's New World College Dictionary a raconteur is "a person skilled at telling stories or anecdotes". Stories and anecdotes are usually transmitted verbally but this new book by writer and magician, Teller, brings the art of the raconteur to life through the written word. Much more than a biography of his father, Joe (Pad), and mother, Irene (Mam), this book opens a door to the past and gives us a remarkable glimpse into the lives of two very talented and intelligent people who raised a remarkable son.
In true raconteur style, Joe Teller shares stories and letters he wrote while "riding the rails" during the great Depression, why he eloped with Irene, and tales from World War II. The letters are often written in a very pleasing style and contain such pearls of wisdom as "Harder the work, so the lesser the pay. Thus philosophically, hard work is play." Not only are we privy to the inner workings of the mind of Joe, but his kid has also given us a visual treat with the reproductions of over 70 original cartoons, paintings and photographs which help to make this book even more delightful.
Though the book is subtitled "Joe Teller - a portrait by his kid, Teller", I must give mom, Irene credit for her own contributions through stories and artwork. In my mind I see Joe and Irene as loving, equal partners in their journey through life, and it is obvious that they have enriched the life of their son, the greatest gift a parent can give. I too feel that my own life has been enriched by learning just a little about these two wonderful people even if it is only through this loving tribute.
No matter what your reading preference is, history, art, humor, stories, poetry and more you will find it in "When I'm Dead All This Will Be Yours". Thank you so much Joe, Irene and Teller for sharing with all of us.

History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Ciaran Carson, a Belfast-born journalist and musicologist, offers an unusually constructed history of his native city in this collection of sometimes whimsical essays that disguise a profound sadness. Remembering his boyhood fondness for building model airplanes, for instance, he touches on the religious imagery of the Troubles, artifacts of a mimesis that seeks "a parallel reality," one better than that of the present. Recalling another youthful fondness for shortwave radio, he reconstructs "an era when London, more importantly than Rome, was the hub of the universe, emanating authoritative spokes to its dominions. I hear it murmur as I write, and feel complicit with its now-declining realm." Carson, a Catholic, speaks to the possibilities of a Belfast free of its ghosts and seemingly interminable hatreds; his descent into "the wormhole of memory" yields a wonderful book. --Gregory McNamee

Magical prose.......2001-08-03
I was led to this book via Partickane's list of contemporary Irish literature on .... Partially a memoir, partially a meditation on language and history, and not quite like anything I have ever read before. Carson's prose style is lyrical, melodic and absolutely engaging without being in the least showy.
A masterful playground of language and memory.......1998-10-25
As unlikely as the link may seem, Cairan Carson is to Belfast and traditional Irish music what Nathanial Mackey is to California and jazz.
Carson's memoire of life as an adolescent in Belfast is ripe ground for etymological meanderings in an out of English and Irish. He dally's with Catholic dogma and sources whose only connective thread is his passing interest in them.
The Star Factory is an internal play of language, image and memory that gives spunk to the genre and good craic to the reader.
