Flying proofreading or editing, or both.......2007-09-04
The combination of countries was almost ideal for the purpose of the trip I was about to embark upon. It included Iceland and Lithuania. I grew up in Lithuania, and often visit Iceland, but the first had been changing rapidly, so it is good to keep checking the facts, and there's always something new one can find in a travel guide, even about a country one knows well. It is also a good way to assess the quality of information in the book, checking against the familiar. In that respect, this guide did not inspire trust: quite many misspellings in the Lithuanian part, a wrong URL here, a wrong word there (Zemuoges for "strawberry" - should have been "braskes" as "Zemuoges" are for wild strawberries). It lists the individuals who helped out with fact checking (and, it seems, stories, some of them dubiuos), so I would not be happy if I were one of the ones in the acknowledements for Lithuania.
Still an OK guide, hence three stars.

A Great Biography of A Terrible Man.......2004-05-26
I'm mainly writing this review because I wanted to counter some of the negative things that have been said about "All-American Monster." If Stickney has come across to some reviewers as biased, there's a reason for that and that is that all the available evidence pointed to McVeigh's guilt! He later even admitted as much himself, showing no remorse for the children that he killed, calling them, as I recall, "collateral damage." But Stickney's greatest accomplishment here is in fleshing out just how an American war veteran with no truly distinguishing characteristics pulled off the single worst case of domestic terrorism in U.S. history. It's the same thing that has been said about the Nazis, that whole banality of evil thing. McVeigh was a total loser who decided to let his boredom and hatred lead him down a road that caused the destruction of innocent lives. As Stickney has deftly chronicled here, he was no different than any other work-a-day stiff living in any corner of this country--except that he decided to lash out at a perceived enemy (the "government"), that was in reality made up of people just trying to make a life for themselves, thereby gaining himself notoriety and priming the country for the greater human toll of 9/11. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to plumb the roots of evil.
american made monster.......2002-10-26
Although this book is does not take a sympathetic approach to McVeigh's story, it becomes pretty apparent how McVeigh may have been lead astray. He was abandoned by his mother, had an emotionally detatched father, etc. Shows both sides of this tragedy. The tragedy of the bombing and the trajedy of McVeigh's disenchantment with America; especially after he was treated like a human guinea pig by the army. Very interesting book, I couldn't put it down.
an unauthorized bio.......2001-07-14
I got this because I wanted some insight into how the story all came about and definitely more information.I got it here.A lot of questions were answered here,so if you want insight and revelation into what happened and why this book is a good place to start.I liked it because it was so informative.I considered that a book should have a certain amount of information to be able to be fair and the writer is fair to all sides.
Review of biography about Timothy McVeigh.......1998-02-12
'All American Monster', by Brandon M. Stickney, chronicles the life of convicted Oklahoma bomber Timothy McVeigh, from childhhood up to, but not including, his trial. Keeping in mind that his trial had not yet occured, I found it incredulous that the entire book was written on the assumption that McVeigh was guilty. The author even went as far as telling us what McVeigh was thinking as he watched the Murrah building explode. I'm sure writers need to make some assumptions when doing an unauthorized biography, but I found the assumption of guilt a bit unsettling. One has to wonder about how much editing was done from interviews with those that know McVeigh, in order to fit the bias of the author. To his credit, Stickney seems to have put a lot of legwork into this book, and interview numerous people. You get a general idea of who Tim McVeigh was as a teen, but from there on, I don't think the author was able to get past his own political ideas to give the reader an accurate view. Mr. Stickney even went as far as 'correcting' the political views expressed by Jennifer McVeigh, Tim's sister, in a letter she wrote to her local newspaper. A biography shouldn't be used as a personal forum for an author's own beliefs. I found it both irrelevant and unprofessional. Perhaps there just wasn't enough information available, or those who know McVeigh just didn't want to talk about him, but there was a fair amount of repitition throughout the book, and I felt it could have been 100 pages shorter, and nothing would have been missed. In short, although the book had quite a few facts, and a fair amount of research was done, I found the book much too biased to be a truely accurate story of Timothy McVeigh. Thanks, Kary

Book Description
HOW TO MAKE {ALMOST} EVERYTHING
A Do-It-Yourself Primer
You need this book. As the stuff of life piles up and things spin out of control, we could all use a little help. These never-before-seen designs and how-tos are full of surprise and wonder. Learn how to turn everyday objects into spellbinding inventions to give away to friends or keep for yourself. Our simple self-improvement techniques will make you smarter, better-looking, and more well-adjusted.
(RE) MAKE IT!
This is the “sales copy” section. Here we will talk about how useful, delight-inducing, and excellently well put together this book is. If things have gone a little flat and you’re searching for inspiration, look no further. ReadyMade is full of fun projects for the whole family. It solves problems, cures dizzy spells, and holds open the door. It has a collegial, ’50s garage tinkerer sensibility. It read Popular Science as a kid and dreamt of building rockets. It launches with fiery trails. It soars. When it falls, it brushes itself off and starts over. It is the Captain of Creativity. Resistance is futile. This book is 100% hope.
First project: Personalize this book and protect it from theft by cutting out this portion of the cover and replacing it with your own photo. (See page 16)
Customer Reviews:
Really awful projects.......2007-09-22
I've purchased a few copies of ReadyMade magazine at the newsstand and enjoyed some of the ideas in those issues, so I went ahead and ordered this book, thinking it would contain more of the same. Big mistake.
I feel confident advising everyone reading this review that there is nothing (yes, I mean not one thing) in this book that you will want to display in your home. A stack of empty laundry detergent bottles (totally undisguised) as a coat rack, anyone? When you picture your dream home, does it have cardboard FedEx shipping boxes (again, totally undisguised) hanging on the wall to hold your CD collection? Didn't think so.
I will say that the book's copy is quirky and entertaining, and there's a lot of great trivia in here about the history of various materials, but I didn't buy the book because I wanted to know the history of paper-making; I bought it thinking it contained good project ideas.
Bottom line: If you're living in a homeless encampment, there are things in here that will look great in your place. If not, don't waste your money on this dog!
was I just expecting too much?.......2007-09-01
I'd never read their magazine before, but I was hoping to find some serious projects. The only decent content was the history of the materials (paper, wood, metal, glass, plastic) examined. And that was far from worth the price.
get the magazine, skip the book.......2007-07-31
I LOVE ReadyMade magazine, but was disappointed in the book. I just didn't see too many projects that I would want to spend time on. One example is a chandelier made with plastic forks, spoons, etc. Or another is a coat rack made with old laundry detergent bottles. The ideas just didn't appeal to me much. But the magazine is great!
crafty book lack realistic projects.......2007-05-18
The creators of ReadyMade have brought their creativity and their "Eco-sense" to the yellow pages table. However, while some of the project are fun and creative, many are outlandish and incredibly difficult. They take their recycling to an extreme with projects like an empty water bottle lounge chair and a beer can room divider. They have really great ideas, I just wish the book would have been filled with them.
Great Book.......2007-05-13
This book is awesome. I saw the book in a clothing store and was looking at it for an hour. I went home and purchased it right away. Great buy.

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, Third Edition (PMBOK Guides)
ASIN: 0749424842 |
Book Description
Quest Series--A quick reference guide to vital tools, checklists and guidelines for setting up and managing projects. A valuable resource for managers, sponsors or team members or leaders.
Customer Reviews:
Even if you know the material you'll probably love it.......2002-07-03
I rarely get excited about a book that has information that I've already mastered, but this is an exception, and here are the reasons why:
- It's a short guide to the essential tools that will assure success if they are all used in planning, scheduling and controlling a project. In this respect the book is a memory jogger and sanity check.
- Each tool is succinctly, but thoroughly, covered. The format is: What it is, How it's used and an example. The copious use of graphics and the clear writing result in a small page count that is crammed with information.
- It epitomizes great document design. Like all consultants I spend a lot of time writing and communicating. This book is the standard to which I compare my own work, and I appreciate the , thought and effort that went into writing and laying out this book. It may look simple, but I assure you that the design alone is a masterpiece.
Even though I know the material the book has valid uses beyond serving as a model of technical writing. One use is to convey to team members (and stakeholders) the value of the techniques and tools that you're using to manage the project. Instead of spending valuable time drafting explanations, simply hand them a copy of this small book, or borrow heavily from it and throw together a presentation. Another use is to use this book as both a framework and checklist during the project planning phase.
The book is divided into eight sections. Section 1 is an overview that depicts project management as a process and superimposes the Plan-Do-Check-Act quality cycle on the process. This guides you in planning a project within the context of a quality-focused framework, and the potential pitfalls and prevention checklist in this section adds depth to the overview. The remaining seven sections list tools that you'll use in each process stage: project selection, selection and contract, planning, implement, monitor progress, and complete and review. The final section covers tools for managing multiple projects, such as resource loading and monitoring. The acid test is to assess whether the tools are appropriate and reflect best practices. The book passes with flying colors, and I am basing this opinion on the content of the planning section. It contains all of the key tools used in proper project planning, including work breakdown structures, responsibility charts, cost breakdown structures, critical path analysis and contingency plans.
Regardless of your level of expertise or experience you'll appreciate this book. If your budget allows a copy for every key member of your project team I predict a substantial return on your investment.

Book Description
This new reader contains 38 selections relating to African American cultural history. Drawing upon the author's interest and expertise in oral traditions, this reader identifies historical "texts" that reveal thought and achievement in African American communities in the United States. Professor Fitch emphasizes such non-written records as orature, movement and dance, vernacular architecture, and the plastic arts in combating the notion that traditionally oral communities have little to offer historians. HOW SWEET THE SOUND portrays the urgency and vibrancy of African American history.

Additionally, the elastic band closure keeps sentimental items safely tucked between the pages. Die-cut hardcover, cloth bound. Lies flat when opened.
Customer Reviews:
Flavia Blank Books.......2002-05-07
I have enjoyed the magical drawings and sweet sentiments of Flavia's greeting cards and gift books since the 80's. I was delighted when I discovered that there is now a line of journals with Flavia artwork and inspirational titles. These colorful journals lay flat for easy writing and have an elastic band on the back that can be used for a bookmark. The front picture is set back in a cutout. This book is thick enough to hold many thoughts for avid writers who don't want to replace journals monthly. I write on the front and back of the lined pages and mine last 2-6 months. For me, it is long enough to feel like it was worth my money and short enough for periodic fresh starts. I have gone through more then 3 Flavia journals, and still prefer them over others on the market. I just hope that more designs keep coming out! Your only problem with this journal will be choosing which one to pick first!

Writing in clear, simple terms, Dr. Isaacs profiles each hormone system, discussing what can go wrong and how imbalances can affect weight and even perpetuate obesity. The book explains how to reverse symptoms of hormonal imbalance through diet changes and other remedies, and then expands the discussion, teaching readers how to deal with everything from menstrual cycles to diabetes by recognizing and remedying hormonal problems.
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2007-01-11
Very informative. Good technical information in easy to understand terms. Appears to be very thorough. However, his dietary recommendations are lacking. Good, healthy nutrition does not include such things like processed foods and artificial sweeteners. There is so much good nutritional information available that never made it into this book.
Disappointing.......2006-01-21
There's some medical information which you could find on the internet but it is disconnected by any theme. Also, the author claims that it is proved that high carbohydrate diets cause insulin resistance and diabetes.(pg76) He obviously hasn't read "The China Study" by T.C. Campbell. Nor has he read "Mastering Leptin" by B. Richards, otherwise he would not recommend snacking as a way to lose weight. There is a lot of information about drugs and supplements for serious illnesses which may not be useful to the reader looking for the hormonal connection to weight issues. For that read "Mastering Leptin" and "The China study".
One of the Better Books on the Subject.......2005-10-28
"Hormonal Balance" details the functions of the thyroid, pituitary gland, adrenals, kidneys, the brain, androgen, estrogen, cortisol and stress hormones and how they all play a part in ensuring that the host person can enjoy the best quality of life. If that delicate balance is disrupted, due to excessive alcohol or caffeine, for example, or eating too much of the wrong kinds of foods, etc., then the effects should be obvious: irritability, nervousness, moodiness, depression and anxiety, and other conditions. Women should find this book especially useful, since it candidly discusses the causes, effects and corrections of PMS and menopause. This book is just as much for men, too. Mr. Isaac is convinced that obesity is the cause as well as the result of a poor, deficient dietary and exercise regimen. Reduction or elimination of lipids (fats), decreased sugar, counting calories sensibly, monitoring weight and maintaining exercise are all detailed in a way not found in other books. The eleven chapters perfectly over the 397 pages is one of the best literary, medical and wellbeing investments that can be readily purchased today.
Hormonal Balance: Understanding Hormones, Weight, and Your Metabolism.......2005-10-26
A wonderful book that I will always keep. This is not just information that you have heard from other books, but up to date information on your hormones and metabolism. If you are having problems with weight gain and hormones then you won't waste your money on this one!
I LOVE IT!.......2005-08-27
At first I thought that this book was useful.. It turned out to be a MUST-HAVE for everyone! A great resource and instructional book for almost every aspect of a human being's health! Although people always tend to comfort themselves that nothing's wrong with their health, sometime they suddenly find out that they have been having a hidden, serious problem that they should consume not less than a billion medicines to cure.
This books helped me spot the reasons why I had several but minor problems which my mother always tried to convince me to believe that I'm a perfectly healthy person. Now, and with the help of Hormonal Balance, I discovered and was able to reach the specific health problems I've been having for the last 15 years and how will I be able to overcome them.
Highly recommended!
Special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Scott Isaacs who seems to have put a lot of effort in bringing up such a perfect solution book!

Book Description
Mark Doty's prose has been hailed as "tempered and tough, sorrowing and serene" (The New York Times Book Review) and "achingly beautiful" (The Boston Globe). In Still Life with Oysters and Lemon he offers a stunning exploration of our attachment to ordinary things-how we invest objects with human store, and why

Good Book. .......2007-03-10
This was a well written book. Very moving! Makes you stand back, and take another look at still life.
A Thing Of Beauty.......2002-04-11
Mark Doty begins this book by describing a 350 year old Dutch painting "Still Life with Oysters and Lemon" that he has fallen in love with at the Metropolitan Museum. He then meanders to memories of his "Mamaw" from long ago in East Tennessee-- surely only Southerners call grandparents by that name-- to a poem by Cavafy, to buying an old Italianate Victorian House in Vermont with his partner who later died of AIDS. Along the way, Mr. Doty muses on the subject of balance: the desire to be in a relationship and the need to be free, the balance of order versus clutter, of staying rooted in one place and the need to travel-- and the joy of collecting simple, everyday imperfect things picked up in flea markets rather than perfect expensive objects.
There are so many good things to say about this little 70 page gem that one hardly knows where to begin. Too often I read a work of nonfiction and wish it had remained a short magazine article. That is not so with this book. I wanted it to go on and on. Whether or not the author is correct in his analysis of still life painting, he is completely convincing. Of course, his language is always both concise and beautiful and never gets in the way of what he is saying. Near the end of the book Mr. Doty says "What makes a poem a poem, finally, is that it is unparaphrasable. . . I may try to explain it or represent it in other terms, but then some element of its life will always be missing. It is the same with painting." Such a statement perfectly describes this little masterpiece.
A seamless merging of painting and poetry.......2001-07-03
Mark Doty has done the impossible. In STILL LIFE WITH OYSTERS AND LEMON he has not only written an extended essay (read epic poem) about his encounter with a simple Dutch Still Life painting, but he has also produced what must become the definitive map for looking, seeing, studying and describing the essence of art in a way that encourages us all to return to the pursuit of beauty. Doty has proved his credentials in art hisory and art technique so that he is able to find the essence of a still life, rhapsodize on the quality of light as captured by an everyday object that makes a centuries old painting seem immediate to our own home, and in doing so reveals his own history of memories, lovers, favorite objects, the passage of time as participants in the transitory moment we call life. So many art critics and art historians have attempted to find this plane of understanding and enlightment with only minimal degrees of success. As a curator and essayist about art I am humbled and in awe. Mark Doty is one of the finest poets in America today and knows his way with words, with phrases that illuminate his stances, with defining emotions inaudible to most of us. But this small book is more than an homage to a particular still life painting (though on that merit alone he wins the competition!). This is a tender, thoughtful journey toward discovering beauty that daily surrounds us, a call to accept the transitory nature in all things and to experience them while we may. No fatalism here, just a door opened to appreciate the cycle of being alive...which just happens to warmly include the aspect of dying as part of that totality. As in Still Life painting: artists have selflessly recreated moments precious to them, frozen them in time to stave off the finite, and in doing so have left us with miraculous images to incorporate into our psyches for perpetuating beauty. This book is a must for art students, for art lovers, and for everyone who yearns to understand the journey of the soul. As Doty informs us, paraphrasing poetry or a painting as focused as a still life is impossible; by nature the essence has been distilled. Writing a review of such a book is near impossible. Gift yourself with a book to which you will return as often as the author has returned to Still Life with Oysers and Lemon!

Product Description
From Mark Doty, one of our finest poets, a delicate and sensual literary essay. Part memoir, part art history, part meditation, this hybrid volume uses the great Dutch still life paintings of the seventeenth century as a departure point for an examination of questions about our relationships with things, how we invest them with human store, how they hold feeling and hope and history within them.
