Book Description
This account of Kosa Panís journal describes in great detail the arrival in Brest in 1686 of the first full Siamese embassy to reach France. This fragment is apparently all that survives of a massive report of the activities of the embassy written for King Narai. It was discovered in Paris in the early 1980s, was published in Thai in 1984, and appears here in English for the first time.

Spare Yourself.......2004-10-29
I don't know where all the 5-star reviews for this book originated from, but I guess everyone is entitled to their own particular opinion. For me, this book was a massive waste of time and paper. Sonny Gibson has been pretty convincingly exposed as a con-man and charlatan, so I suppose some of this might work as one man's self-aggrandizing fantasy of what he imagines the Mafia is like. (...) Most of it is just ridiculous and/or boring. If you want Mafia fantasy, stick with books like Puzo's "The Godfather." Better yet, read a book that deals with the reality of organized crime, written by an author like Nicholas Pileggi or George Anastasia. What it comes down to, for me, is this- there are so many good books out there to read and only a limited number of hours in a lifetime to read them, so why subject yourself to works like this?
Whatever became of Sonny Gibson?.......2001-04-18
I READ "MAFIA KINGPIN" FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1983, DURING MY SENIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL, FOR A PROJECT I WAS ASSIGNED TO DO ON THE SUBJECT OF ORGANIZED CRIME. I HAVE READ THE BOOK MANY TIMES SINCE THEN, AND I FIND IT NO LESS EXCITING THAN THE FIRST TIME I READ IT. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK. BY FAR AND AWAY IT IS ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITES. TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT! FAST-PACED, EXPLICIT, GRAPHIC, YOU-CAN'T-PUT-IT-DOWN!
BUT WHATEVER BECAME OF SONNY GIBSON? I UNDERSTAND THAT HE MADE A MOVIE IN 1988 WITH REPARATA MAZZOLA, HIS CO-AUTHOR ON "MAFIA KINGPIN," BUT ASIDE FROM THAT I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MOVIE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO MAKE OF HIS LIFE IN CRIME, AND HIS TRANSFORMATION TO CHRISTIANITY? IS HE STILL AN ACTOR? DOES HE HAVE A WEB SITE (IF HE DOES -- I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND IT), AN EMAIL ADDRESS? WHATEVER BECAME OF SONNY GIBSON? DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW? IF YOU HAVE INFO, FEEL FREE TO TELL ME ALL ABOUT IT @ my email address: SCHAGHY@ISD.NET
THANKS, TED
MAFIA KINGPIN.......2000-10-15
It was one the best books i've read. It is graphic but after you get over that it's GREAT!!! I all most cried when he left Angelo. I wasn't able to put it down.
Very Graphic Book.......2000-04-15
The book was very graphic and accurate. I had the misfortunate to grow in the same type of environment and was exposed to the same lifestyle. The ways of the world and Satan are cruel masters. It's a continuing miracle I didn't have to pay the same price as Sonny Gibson did.
Mafia Kingpin is a very good book.......2000-02-21
I really enjoyed MAFIA KINGIN! It's one of the best mafia books that i have read that have been based on a true story. I passed it along to several friends who felt the same way after reading!

Book Description
Named after a Sardinian princess of the fourteenth century who established laws protecting falcons, Eleonora's falcon is the only European bird to breed in autumn and feed its brood on the mass of birds that migrate from Europe to Africa between July and October. It breeds on small Mediterranean islands in colonies of up to 200 pairs and hunts often in groups, preying on more than 90 species of migrant birds. During the winter this falcon visits the rain-soaked woodlands of Madagascar.
In this study—illustrated beautifully and extensively with 59 line drawings and 38 photographs—Hartmut Walter shows how the unique geographical and biological situation of Falco eleonorae makes the species' health an important indicator of environmental decay. For though it lives in relatively isolated areas, Eleonora's falcon nevertheless may ingest the many pollutants contained in its diet of birds migrating from industrial Europe. Walter, who has studied raptors on several continents and has been an ornithologist since his early youth, examines several discrete colonies of Eleonora's falcon. He concentrates on the species' intraspecific behavior and ecology—such as the falcons' aggressive actions, hunting strategies, and response to fluctuating environmental conditions—and investigates their evolutionary past.

Book Description
The classic handbook for mothers who breastfeed their children past infancy in an updated expanded edition. Norma Jane Bumgarner puts the experience of nursing an older baby or child in perspective, within the context of the entire mother-child relationship. She cites biological, cultural, and historical evidence in support of extended breastfeeding and shares stories gleaned from thousands of families for whom breastfeeding and natural weaning have been the norm.
Customer Reviews:
Proves there's always something to learn!.......2007-06-27
Since my toddler shows no sign of weaning, and I'm very pregnant, I bought this book. Considering how highly recommended it is, I'm not surprised it's a good resource, both for answering questions I already had, and helping me think of more that I had not anticipated. I can't speak from two-at-a-time nursing experience, but this book seems to be one I'll keep close at hand as we figure out our new triad!
Not useful for working moms.......2007-03-06
I have an 11-month old son and have worked almost full-time for 4 months. This book is useless for working moms. After taking pains to say that nursing mothers shouldn't work, she goes on to say that if you do need/choose to work, pumping will be impossible to maintain long-term and that working mothers often choose to wean so they can stop pumping and get back to "socializing with their coworkers" at breaktime. As someone who has pumped in every imaginable situation in order to continue to breastfeed my son, I find this both ignorant and insulting. I will look elsewhere for advice on keeping on breastfeeding and working after my son turns 1.
Great Book !.......2007-02-06
I have a two year old son who is still nursing; I purchased this book when he was about one and a half. I found it to be extremely informative and reassuring. In the midst of criticisms and concerns from those around me (when are you going to wean that child????) I really needed to hear from others who are making the same choice that I am making and to be reminded that it is perfectly acceptable and beneficial to continue to nurse a toddler. The book contains lots of practical information for dealing with situations that arise when nursing an active toddler as well as dealing with sleep issues (a biggie in my house!) I also really enjoyed the historical and cultural perspectives on nursing.
Inspirational but incomplete.......2006-10-11
This book is an extensive reference about nursing children from the end of the first year until they wean themselves. It is filled with a plethora of quotes from mothers and their toddlers about the nursing relationship, as well as entertaining cartoons, so I found it amusing and inspiring, but ultimately dissappointing. The author is so adamant about the need to breastfeed children until they self wean that she fails to acknowledge that the mother has needs and commitments that may conflict with the child's desire to breastfeed, and how to deal with that. The book is also steeped in the authors views on topics unrelated to breastfeeding, in particular potty training and co-sleeping, that some mothers nursing toddlers may find irritating.
If you love breastfeeding but feel that you should wean your child because of pressure from friends or your own lifelong programming, then this book will reassure you that it is not only okay, but normal, to nurse your child well into toddlerhood. If you are struggling with the breastfeeding relationship due to lack of support being a mother, because your other commitments interfere, because it is difficult or uncomfortable for medical reasons, or because your child just likes it more than you do, then you will find little to help in this book except the knowledge that by continuing to breastfeed you are providing your child with a source of instinctual comfort.
I believe that this book would be strengthened by demonstrating a more complete understanding of the reasons why mothers choose to wean their nursing toddlers and providing realistic strategies for mothers to avoid these reasons.
A must-read for nursing past the first few months and beyond.......2006-09-01
I have read this book twice cover to cover, and have read sections even more. The first time, my daughter was still only months old and it planted some seeds in my head. By the second reading, I appreciated knowing I wasn't the only one going through what I was. I've turned to this book for in-the-trenches information about things only breastfeeding moms of toddlers would know such as biting and dealing with outsiders who think I should wean. I recommend this book to mothers of babies around 10 months old or so.

Book Description
From 1926 until her death in 1954, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her turbulent life. One of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent, in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacn, Kahlo did not originally plan to become an artist. During her convalescence from a bus accident in her late teens, Kahlo began to paint with oils. Her pictures, mostly self-portraits and still-lifes, were deliberately naive, filled with the bright colors and flattened forms of the Mexican folk art she loved. At 21, Kahlo fell in love with the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera; their stormy, passionate relationship survived infidelities, the pressures of Rivera's career, a divorce and remarriage, and Kahlo's poor health. The couple traveled to the United States and France, where Kahlo met luminaries from the worlds of art and politics. She had her first solo exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City in 1938 and enjoyed considerable success during the 40s, but her reputation soared posthumously, beginning in the 80s with the publication of numerous books about her work by feminist art historians and others. In the last two decades an explosion of Kahlo-inspired films, plays, calendars, and jewelry has transformed the artist into a veritable cult figure. Portraits of an Icon is not another book featuring Kahlo's beloved, tortured self-portraits. Rather, it offers another kind of portrait of the artist, a means of seeing her through the eyes of those who surrounded her: modern masters of the camera such as Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Martin Munkacsi; leading photojournalists such as Giselle Freund, Bernard Silberstein, and Fritz Henle; and Kahlo's relatives, lovers, and friends, among them Guillermo Kahlo, Nicolas Muray, and Lola Alvarez Bravo. The images span Kahlo's life, beginning with a photograph of a self-possessed chubby four-year-old, her fists full of wilting roses, and ending with the image of an emaciated, wasted figure laying on her deathbed, dressed in pre-Columbian finery. They follow the artist's trajectory from precocious child to famous artist, bringing into focus the painter, the paintings, the patient, the wife, the daughter, the lover, the friend. They permit a look into her bedroom, a seat at her table, a visit to her hospital room, a stroll through her garden, a view into her collections, and some play with her pets. While many of these images provide us with a unique opportunity to glimpse the woman behind the facade, others, though less revealing, are equally fascinating in allowing us to view one of the most intriguing of the artist's creations--the construction of a self-image as carefully crafted and conceived as any of her works of art.
Customer Reviews:
I love Frida!.......2005-06-21
This is a must have for Kahlo fans out there. She's talented. She's beautiful. She's fierce.
