Starting near Denver at 5500 feet and ending near Durango at 7000 feet, the CT gains and loses almost 76,000 feet in elevation over 468 miles.

Each segment has distance, elevation gain, an overview of the segment; a list of trailhead and access points; maps needed; a list of supply points; services and accommodations; detailed trail description; a map, and an elevation gain and loss chart. Additional town maps and mountain bike detour maps (around Wilderness Areas) have been added where applicable.
An extensive introduction includes information on planning, supplying, safety, cycling, regulations, and backcountry ethicsplus chapters on Colorado Trail heritage, natural history, and geology. At the back of the book you will find a graphic summary of the trail, equipment list, ranger districts with contact information, bibliography, and index.

Incomplete and heavy.......2005-11-14
This is the first book that I have read from back to front. I hiked the CT from Durango to Denver in 32 days from mid-August to Mid-September 2005 and this book was my main guide. I wanted to give this book 2 stars only, but because it actually brought me all the way, I decided on 3. What is the reason for this harsh judgement?
The reason is not, that I had to read it backwards! - Some people on the trail found it confusing to read it the wrong way, but I found the description of the trail adequate in most places. I got lost a few times when missing a junction, but this happened maybe once a week and is part of the game. In general the trail is extremely well marked. - No, I find the data in this book incomplete. Everything and more (except for scetches of trail towns) you will find in the tiny and cheap Trailside Databook from the same publisher. My my main complaints are, that this book
* has very little concrete information about water sources (!) and campsites.
* poor maps. The maps included are US Forest Service maps that show no elevation data (unlike USSGS topo maps). This makes it near impossible to figure out any geographic features. This also means you probably want to buy additional maps. This could easily cost you 100 bucks! Other guide books (PCT) include usable maps.
* has very coarse elevation profiles. Usually only 4 to 6 data points are given for each of the 28 segments. You might actually be walking uphill, while the elevation profile points down! In a time of computer generated elevation profiles this is inexcusable. (Even the displays at segment trailheads show _much_ better profiles.)
* gives elevation "gain" for each segment but no "loss" information. This is important if you have a bad hip or hike the "wrong" direction where "down" and "up" switch places.
The book is printed on very glossy, heavy paper. This means beautiful pictures are included. But it also means that most hiker tear out pages as they go to save weight. The paper does not burn well and can't be used as a fire starter at all.
On the positive side the book tries to teach you a little bit about the history of each of the 28 segments (usually one page). As I went on I really enjoyed reading them and got a feeling for the history (mostly mining and railroads).
The book is adequate as a guide. My recommendation for those planing a thru-hike: get the trailside data book from the same publisher (better get 2 copies, as I lost mine early and it was impossible to replace on the trail) and a set of good topo maps. You might get away without maps, as the trail is very well marked, but having them provides an additional layer of safety and a lot of interesting information.
Now with GPS waypoints/coordinates.......2003-09-24
The new 6th edition comes with latitude, longitude, and elevation for each of the main waypoints and intersections along each of the segments.
Nice but missing a few things.......2002-08-20
I agree with all of the positive points of the first review.
The only things that are missing, which I think are important, is that on the book's maps none of the coordinates are given for the trail. Waypoints would be excellent information so that you can map it on your own Topo! software without having to buy something else in addition to the book.
If you are bound for the Colorado Trail, bring this!.......2001-04-28
Now in a fully updated fifth edition, The Colorado Trail: The Official Guidebook provides comprehensive and essential information for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts wanting to enjoy one of Colorado's premier wilderness features available to the public year round. The Colorado Trail - A Comprehensive Guide.......2000-10-29
If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to the Colorado's beautiful 470 mile trail, Randy Jacob's book is an excellent choice. This concisely written yet thorough guidebook includes information for day-hikers and through-hikers and takes you on a scenic journey from Denver to Durango.
The introductory chapter gives a complete history of the Trail and how it was developed. Jacobs also gives backcountry guidelines and precautions for novice hikers, a suggested packing list and a geological description of the trail.
For those mainly interested in the "technical" aspect of the Colorado Trail, Jacobs has all the bases covered. The book is broken down into sections of the Colorado Trail that are manageable and accessible for day-hikers and provide comfortable stopping and restocking points for through-hikers. Each section of the Trail is labeled with a starting point, an ending point, mileage for the section and total elevation gain. Jacobs also includes elevation gain and loss charts.
Following are detailed descriptions of the trail, access points, and supply and service accomodations. At the end of each section Jacobs has included a blank section for trail notes the Official Colorado Trail Topographic Maps with mileage and measurements.
In addition to all these features, the book includes the spectacular photos of John Fielder to enhance the text. Jacobs also added complete information for mountain biking the Trail, showing bike detours and alternate routes.
One of the extra details that sets this book apart from other guidebooks is the inclusion of Gudy Gaskill's Colorado Trail highlights and pitfalls. As the driving force behind the development of the Trail, Gaskill's insights are invaluable for any hiker on the Trail.
Overall this book is well-designed and makes planning a trek on the Colorado Trail, whether a day trip or a through hike, simple.
Book Description
The official guide to Colorado's 10th Mountain Hut and Trail System covers the most extensive backcountry ski system of its kind in the country. dissapointed.......2006-08-11
the CD in weiminuche has changed and those changes are not in your book. further more this book says nothing regarding recommended camping spots and when to top off your water bottle.
not so good.......2002-11-01
I completed a thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail this year, and I have say that these "official" guides are pretty awful.
If you want a real CDT guidebook, get the Jim Wolf guides from the Continental Divide Trail Society - they are infinitely superior to these Westcliffe guides. Wolf is better written, more detailed, has better information and data, and on and on and on.
The Westcliffe had 2 advantages for me - one was that they were written in my direction of travel (except for CO, whihc is written in a different direction than the other guidebooks??!!!), which has something to be said for it; and the second is that they are occasionally more up to date as far as recent changes go, which means that they helped out in a couple potentially iffy situations.
Other than that, though, the Westcliffe guides had me FUMING throughout the trip - they are riddled with inaccuracies, mistakes, omissions, bad writing, unclear writing, and on and on and on. Every single day, I think, almost without fail, the Westcliffe guides would blow it in at least one major place. Now I know the CDT is (at this point) still all about using a variety of maps and books and whatever else you can dredge up to find your way and not relying on one guidebook source, and we did. So in that light, you could think of the Westcliffe guides as just another piece to add or subtract. But standing on their own, the fact that they purport to be "official" is preposterous, not just because they omit some great "non-official" sections like the Gila Middle Fork, Parry Peak, and Temple Pass, but because they are sold as "guidebooks" when they are more like "lostbooks." To be honest, I think the Westcliffe guides are so bad that they border on being irresponsible.
A Guide To An Adventure.......2000-07-11
I had been thinking for some time to do a backpacking trip on the Continental Divide Trail. I knew that I would need some assistance.
I purchased this book in the fall of 1999. I spent the next six months planning my adventure. Since I had only 7 days to spend on the trail, I decided to hike Segments 24, 25 and 26 (from Winfield to Hancock).
I planned my trip exactly form this book. When I got on the trail July 1, 2000, it was if I had my own personal trail guide with me. I knew exactly what to expect, how far I would hike each day, where the water and the good camp sites were. The driving directions were very accurate to the trailhead, the mileage and guidemarkers were also accurate.
Each night I camped at the locations I expected and found water where the author said it would be.
I finished my 7 day hike within 2 hours of my expected time! Never had I been on the CDT before!
If you have any interest in the CDT I would urge you to purchase this book. I'm now planning my adventure for next year from this book.
This book will guide you on an unforgettable challenge.......1999-12-15
Last summer I hiked the CDT, through the wemmenuche wilderness in southern Colorado. This book was used every day to help us out of our 12 day expedition. The details of the trails described in the book are written so well that I often reread parts of it to put a picture in my mind of the awesome land. Tom Jones does an outstanding job. I will keep this book forever, use it on the trail again, and someday pass it to my children.

Magnificent collection from a true Son of Texas.......1999-03-16
I became acquainted with Bill Porterfield's work during my too-brief stay in Texas back in the early '80s. This book, a collection of his columns with some original pieces, is one that I literally stole from my parents' bookcase when I left home in 1982. Porterfield has a rich, majestic way with a story that shines brightest when talking about the people he loves--family and friends--and it is one of the few books that I will pick up cold and reread years later. Highly recommended.

Research is the strong suit of this book about darkly handsome Richard Ramirez, who terrorized Los Angeles for 14 months in 1984-85 with his penchant for breaking into homes dressed all in black, where he fiercely assaulted, sodomized, robbed, and (in 13 cases) murdered his victims. Carlo spent more than 100 hours interviewing Ramirez on death row, more than a month in El Paso, Texas, talking to Ramirez's family and friends, and another month hanging out with the two detectives who solved the case. He made visits to all 19 crime scenes in the middle of the night. His narrative maintains a steady focus on Ramirez, drawing no conclusions about his Satanism or his mental pathology and simply letting his appalling deeds and words speak for themselves. The trial and post-trial sections are long but interesting, covering Ramirez's rage attacks and his many "groupies" (one of them a juror!), especially Doreen Lloyd, whom he married in September 1996. (This reviewer found Philip Carlo's book much better than Clifford L. Linedecker's Night Stalker.)
Book Description
From out of the darkness he comes, silent and deadly. Cloaked all in black, he moves in shadows, blending and becoming one with them. No one ever sees him.....until it is too late. He is more than one of the most feared serial killers of all time. He is Richard Ramirez, a man, who ten years ago left thirteen people dead and the city of Los Angeles paralyzed with fear. Here at least is the definitive account of America's most feared serial murderer, based on sixty hours of personal interviews with Richard Ramirez himself. You will follow Richard on his odyssey into depravity and mind-numbing violence. You'll listen to an unprecedented police manhunt gather force to capture The Night Stalker. Includes an actual interview with Ramirez. In his own words, in his own voice, hear Richard discuss the death rattle, sex & serial killers & how women can avoid becoming victims. Told by Danny Aiello. Three hours.
Customer Reviews:
An Incredibly Thorough Book and a Classic in the Genre.......2007-09-25
I'll begin with a few words about the author, because it's noteworthy. Philip Carlo is a man who strongly believes in research, and by that, I mean extremely thorough research. He spent over 100 hours with Richard Ramirez, and I cannot imagine how much more he spent studying the case. Carlo also is a man much concerned about the evil in this world and shows tremendous courage in his quest to understand and prevent these terrible things.
The book itself is one enormous piece, about 600 tight pages, and I can't think of anything that is not covered by it. The structure of it is quite interesting as well: you first begin by the crimes commited by Ramirez, and believe me that part is seriously affecting (I am quite used to true crime books involving atrocious acts, but I had never felt so repulsed and shocked), then you move backwards in time to learn about Richard Ramirez's origins and family and life up to when he began murdering people. Then there's the capture, and the final parts are about the trial; probably the most thorough trial prose I've ever read in a true crime book. The quality of Carlo's work is truly outstanding.
In this edition, there's a new chapter containing an interview with Richard Ramirez and some excerpts about females fans of Richard which just about blow one's mind with disturbing revelations about the woman psyche. It is extremely interesting.
I would conclude by saying that if you are curious about Ramirez's case, then this is definitely the book for you, and I cannot imagine that another book covered so much material, with so much insight, as this one. With this book, you have an author who has a strong personality and is driven; and also one who definitely can write with excellence and leave himself out of judgement, however hard that is to do, he did it very professionally. This is one of the most impressive true crime books I ever read. The only other book that is similar in quality, I think, is Richard Lourie's book about Andrei Chikatilo. A must read.
Book.......2007-09-22
This is a strong book that always keeps yo guessing and on the edge of your seat. I think that this author writes some nice pieces of written masterpiece!
Extensive, exhaustive, excruciating........2007-08-01
Richard Ramirez was different in a lot of ways from 'normal' serial killers in that his victims were not stalked (despite his nickname), not obsessed over, and they did not fit one profile or gender. They were random innocents who never dreamed they'd be so unlucky. Philip Carlo effectively makes us care about the victims instead of treating them as arbitrarily as Ramirez did, although I have to confess I started to lose track of them as the murders piled up. But that serves well to remind the reader of the enormous amount of life that was taken by the Night Stalker. If Ramirez's crimes were a freak show, his trial was a circus. Carlo's work on the trial is as thorough as I've seen such a thing presented, for better or worse. Fully half of the near-600 page book is steeped in court proceedings, so you've been warned. Through no fault of the author's, it slows to a crawl in places. Every motion, hearing, and decision is slavishly detailed. During the trial, Ramirez gained a legion of faithful admirers (mostly women) who followed his every move. Carlo lets them explain why they are so drawn to him, without making value judgments. Do they realize he could have raped or killed them? Of course, some wish he had... I would like to read a book on why so many women are attracted to famous killers; there's probably at least a few out there. Richard Ramirez is an example of a life gone wrong. The book based on his life makes him all the more unforgettable.
A Very Detailed Account of the Night Stalker!.......2007-05-22
Philip Carlo's book is well-researched and very thorough. We know more about the Night Stalker also known as Richard Ramirez who terrorized Los Angeles area and San Francisco in 1985 and 1984. He is a self-admitted Satanist who got his kicks and highs from terrorizing even the most vulnerable of victims. He raped, sodomized, tortured, and terrorized not only women but the entire Southern California area lived in fear--changing their locks, getting guns, dogs, etc. anything to make themselves feel safer. They hadn't seen a crime like this since Manson but Ramirez was a one man crime spree who worshipped Satan. His family history provides a better understanding of the man's background and the incidents as well provides some insight into why he became such a terror. To this day, what surprises me is the most is that women fell for him as if he was a desirable catch. One fan even married him in prison while he is on death row which means life in California. The proceedings because Ramirez refused anybody but a Hispanic lawyer to represent him may have hurt his chances. I don't care what race or ethnicity or religion regarding an attorney. The best defense attorneys cost money and they do defend regardless of whether they are Jewish like Robert Shapiro or African American like Johnnie Cochrane. His lawyers were inept to handle the magnitude of such an enormous case and they didn't have the expertise or experience to know how to handle Ramirez's defense. Of course, Ramirez' crimes are just unthinkable and unforgivable especially how he went after mature women in their sixties and eighties. Even though he's on death row, he still gets to get married to one of his fans. He's not that attractive and he's not that nice. There is a diabolical side to him. I think the Satanism, the crimes, and the brutality is enough to disuade any women from being attractive to a man like that knowing what he has done without much remorse or apologies to his family, friends, and others.
author does his homework.......2007-01-19
this book sets of at a terrific pace...the first 100 pages just go like a blink of the eye.the author pulls no punches when describing the horrific and sadistic crimes of ramirez.driven by satanic messages while listening to AC/DC and other heavy rock bands, ramirez steals cars to scour streets in the dead of night...made worse by the fact LOS ANGELES was in the grip of an heatwave, people were told to lock all doors and windows...ramirez managed to get inside the homes of the unlucky ones...real crime lovers will really like this..
Product Description
This newly published collection of true Arabian horse names is now available from Syrian-born author, Bachir Bserani. In this exciting book, written with Arabian horse owner and breeder, Kellie Kolodziejczyk, Bachir Bserani supplies more than just a mere listing of Arabic words. He goes beyond by providing an extensive collection of true and appropriate, authentic Arabic names for colts and fillies. The Arabic names are written in Romanized Arabic, as well as, actual Arabic calligraphy. Additionally, beside each name is the English meaning, as well as, the phonetic pronunciation.
What makes this book especially charming is the narrative and stories, written from an authentic Middle Eastern perspective, and with a mild dialectical tone. Highlighted is the great significance of the Arabian horse to the Bedouin tribes and Middle Eastern culture. With exotic tales of the desert, including some of the author's own personal experiences, this book tugs at the heart, bringing to the surface the love and admiration people from around the world feel for these mystical and cherished creatures. A wonderfully unique and valuable reference tool not found anywhere else.
Many breathtaking, full-color photographs throughout, including many by equine photographer IRENE TONES.

More than Just Names.......2007-09-11
This book is one of my favorite Arabian books. It has so much more to it than just authentic Arabian names, it is rich with the stories that are in it too. Really gives the reader some insight into the culture of the Arabian horse. This book will remain a staple in my breeding program. I would love to see some other books by this author too.
Simply a wonderful book!.......2005-11-08
I just received my copy of Authentic Arabian Horse Names and I couldn't put it down. Congratulations! It is a book that is long overdue in the Arabian horse community. I have experienced the poor naming choices that plague the Arabian horse here in the United States. Now owners and breeders will be able to name their horses properly with confidence.
I was struck by the wonderful stories about life in the desert with the Arabian horse. I teared up as I read about Abou Mahmood and his beloved Rheemah. The stories give us readers a greater understanding of why the Bedouin people hold the Arabian in such a high status.

the king of kings dog.......2002-08-22
I purchased this book as a first edition back in 1969 David and Charles press England, since then I reckon I have read it most months. The articles are interesting and hold ones attention to the fact that these dogs are so special. The photography is excellent, being packed out with what one wants to see-plenty of Salukis. It methodically lists all colour types and both coursing and show strain the coursing strains being obviously stronger and larger dogs.It is an obsolute must for the Saluki lover and I cant imagine any book matching its quality of words and pictures, especially the usually tacky USA publications we see on dogs, which are usually only an ego trip for the breeds owner, this book is not such a book, well it is typically English, isn`t it/-thanks Don

View into Bedu Life.......2007-01-26
This narrative about a "saluki" bedu hound is an excellent entree into traditional desert life, and illustrations help make the story come alive. Reveals that despite Muslims' usual aversion towards pets in the house, there is provision for "working animals" like salukis to dwell with humans.
Saluki Hound of the Bedouin.......2006-07-31
As a saluki owner/breeder for 30 plus years I found this book utterly delighful and very easily read.
Yes it is a young persons book, but as a saluki person I loved the folk lore and history explained in the story.
Congratulations

A Wonderful Book!.......2000-12-26
I am an avid dog lover and own probably most of the books written about dogs - Putting on the Dog is by far my favorite. The photographs in this book go way beyond being just nice pictures; they really speak a deep emotional language, touching the heart in a way that very few people are able to do in print. If you have ever loved a dog, no matter what the breed, you should do yourself a favor and buy this book. Each photo is a treasure filled with love and humor and sharing and the kind of wisdom of which only dogs are capable. A work such as this is a rarity which comes along only once in a great while. It captures a purity of spirit which is near impossible to translate into mere words. Putting on the Dog speaks directly to your heart. If you have ever truly loved a dog you will leaf through the pages and find yourself sometimes chuckling at long forgotten memories, sometimes laughing out loud in spite of yourself, sometimes reaching for the nearest box of tissues then, finally, closing the cover knowing that you will return again and again. Putting on the Dog is a treasure!

Customer Reviews:
Great book for beginner beaders.......2007-08-23
This is a great book for learning good techniques for selecting and stringing beads, with comprehensive instructions on all the basics including stringing, crimping, knotting, wireworking and much, much more. Also includes lots of great projects with full instructions. Follow the steps and finish up with a wonderful piece of jewellery that you can wear with pride or give to someone as a lovely gift. This is a small book, but packed with information. I love it! I'm a much older beginner to beading and have found it invaluable.
For beginners just venturing into the art of beading..........2007-07-16
When I first started beading, I bought several bead books. Many of them were a waste of time-but not this one. I refer back to it often for basic information. While it may be a little boring for advanced users, beginners will find it extremely helpful. Getting Started Stringing Beads includes information on shopping for beads (which helped me to understand how bead stores work-I would have been lost without this!). Did you know that when you go into a real bead store you will find a bead tray and clipboards with paper and pens to write down what you buy? It also includes the basics, simple design instructions, information on focal beads, earrings, and helpful tips. This book was well worth the money.

learn about bead sizes.......2007-04-10
As many have said before, this is a great book for learning about bead sizing, and all the parts that go into stringing. It left me needing more information about technique. Good beginning reference.
The best!.......2007-04-08
I bought this book when I realized I could save a lot of money shopping for beads in the wholesale district in NYC (Broadway in the 30's) and learning a few simple closures. This book explains it all, from the tools you need to the different kinds of beads to the wire and clasps to use. It also has a rudimentary design section (just my speed!) on basic patterns and the effects they create, from "I'm off to the opera in my little black dress" to "I'm a crazy artist." There are numerous clear color illustrations and simple explanations of how to do the basics. A great first book if you're doing beading just for fun.

A brief, but helpful overview of how to plan a white garden.......2007-08-21
This book was originally published in the UK, but has a fair amount of information that would be useful for gardeners almost anywhere. It includes:
* A discussion about design theory and plant combinations.
* A chapter on practical design considerations.
* Planting plans (each with several pages of notes) for various gardens: spring garden, topiary garden, herbaceous border, walled garden, water garden, city garden, conservatory, and patio and windowbox.
* A short plant reference guide that unfortunately does not include plant hardiness zones.
* 130 beautiful color photos (many small or medium sized).

A wonderful guide to your child.......2007-05-13
We have been reading this series faithfully since our son was 1. They are easy to read and yet pack a lot of insightful information on the development progress of your child. They have helped me understand what phase he might be in and be more patient with him as a result. I always order the next one right around his birthday! I hope they help me thru his teenage years also.
Eye Opening.......2006-11-11
"Life in a Minor Key" provides a sneak preview to the parental challenges and pleasures which lie ahead for the coming year. As I watch my child's dramatic transition from young child to schoolboy, it is comforting and helpful to refer to this reassuring guide.
Keep this on your Parenting Shelves for Peace of Mind!.......2000-06-13
When my then 5 1/2 year old was behaving much differently than he had at age 5, my mother pulled out an old hardcover version of the Gesell Institute Books and - oh my! - much of the changes seemed to be quite common among 5 1/2 year olds!
These are 'old' books (I'm one of the earliest of the baby boomers, though my child is now nearly 9), but they are still useful.
This book and all in the series are little paperbacks, quick to read. Our society has changed since they were written, so a bit of the book may seem dated if you don't like 'traditional roles. However, there is much good information and wisdom in here, unencumbered by the modern day concerns about ADD and such. In expensive, a good investment to ease a parent's mind. A nice gift from grandparents to their own children, and for young parents, just nice to have on the shelf for those days when we forget that kids behaviors and interests change as they grow up.
Problem solving outdated.......1999-09-22
These books have helped me understand what my children have been going through at various stages/ages of their development. This book was on target with my daughter's behavior/temperment. However, I found the problem solving answers to be extrememely outdated. The authors suggested that a particular seven yr old who disliked school could either change to a private school, stay back in first grade or shorten the school day. What were they thinking? No suggestions were given as to how to talk to the child or work with the teachers, school or family doctor. I thought I would get some advice for a similar problem, not this time. In general I found this book helpful but think it needs to be updated, possibly each decade.
Great for age level connecting with your child........1999-06-24
Seeing into the mind of a seven-year old is an amazing journey. From sullen independence to exhuberant joy at new horizons. Louise Bates Ames guides readers around the pitfalls and gives a new understanding to this inwardly viewed age. It's as wonderful as the rest of her age-related books.
Book Description
Robert Smithson (1938-1973), an artist of paramount importance in postwar America, created radical new perspectives for landscape architecture, photography, art criticism, and site-specific installation. His Spiral Jetty-a 1,500-foot-long coil of rock built in 1970 at the edge of the Great Salt Lake-is widely appreciated as one of the most significant art projects of the twentieth century. Less well known is the connection between the Jetty and the nearby Golden Spike National Historic Site, location of the completion of the first U.S. transcontinental railroad. The link between these two monuments is but one facet of an entire complex of historical reference and reflection that structures Smithson's work. Mirror-Travels encompasses the full span of Smithson's career, offering a close analysis of the artist's working model of history and featuring comprehensive case studies of three of his most influential works: "The Monuments of Passaic," "Incidents of Mirror-Travel in the Yucatan," and the Spiral Jetty. Incorporating abundant new material from Smithson's personal papers and library, Jennifer Roberts offers surprising new interpretations about the artist and his responses to the social, ideological, and material contradictions of his time.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book!.......2006-03-04
This is the second book in a trilogy by Jodine Turner. The first book snuck up on me disguised as a novel. Then I had to read the 2nd book and I'm waiting not so patiently for the last of this trilogy. If you want to understand the Goddess Energy pouring onto our planet at the present time, this is a good place to start. Jodine Turner has kept it light by turning history into a novel format. This is part of our history.
Keys to Remember.......2005-07-10
Jodine's books are awesome! Her descriptions of the goddess mystery schools and processes reveals much of the power contained in the journey and commitment one must make in order to receive enlightenment. These are must reads for seekers. I eagerly await her next book.
I loved this book!.......2005-06-16
I just devoured this second installment of the Goddess of the Stars and the Sea. When I got to the part about the release and initiation at the levels of the labyrinth on the Tor, I thought, "This is going to become a classic on everyone's shelf!" I think Jodine has done a fine job of transmitting the magic and power of this Goddess lineage, and I can't wait to read the third one. It's clear that she is bringing through a very potent voice and that it resonates in her cells.
A Call to Today's Priestesses.......2005-06-13
As a contemporary priestess of the Divine Mother and the steward of a contemporary women's mystery school, the Temple of the Sacred Feminine, I enjoy reading books about women's initiation and the path of the priestess. This book captivated me because it is jarring the collective memories and pointing to the emergence of the priestesses of the Mother who are here on the planet today. The priestesses are awakening, as is the imperative of their call to service in distinctly feminine ways. I felt a sense of recognition with the characters as well as the unfolding of the priestess path. I especially loved the main character's initiatory journey through the labyrinth and the desciptions of where each portal took the woman within herself.
The story is well-constructed, it held a tension that engaged me right to the end, and I found myself emotionally involved with the characters and their challenges. This book will quicken the latent memories of women called to the priestess path, and hopefully catalyze a journey or search for those not already on this path. The path of the everyday priestess is here, now, and so needed for the awakening and healing of the planet and her people.
As rich and completely engaging as her first...........2005-06-05
I found Jodine's second installment to be as rich and completely developed a story as her first wonderful book, "The Awakening." This writer's ability to create vivid pictures, transport us into the historical setting of her stories and engage us deeply with each of her characters, is magical, mythical story-telling at it's best.
My teenage daughter read "The Awakening" and was after me to hurry up and finish "Keys to Remember" so she could devour it!
I think this trilogy is a wonderful gift for teenage girls that enjoy historical fantasy.
We both wait in anticipation of the 3rd in this marvelous series. Thank you Jodine and bless your creativity that more of the Goddess continues to flow to us through your writing!

Book Description
Avalon exists. It is a real place with geographical boundaries and a turbulent history. It is the treasure house of Arthurian legend, and the true birthplace of Arthur. It is the secret location in which the identity of an entire nation has lain buried. Until now.......
Customer Reviews:
Arfur Magna.......2006-07-11
I am not quite finished reading this book but so far I am impressed. I would have liked to see a consolidating map at the end of the book elucidating the narrative. As it stands the maps provided are piecemeal and difficult to put into the wider geographical context.
The author's premise is a very engaging (a note here: this is a book attempting to put Arthur, Avalon and the entire cast in a geographical and historical context, not a history of the little people) mix of culture, politics, religion (both pagan and Christian), proposed historical inaccuracy, and linguistic detective work somewhat reminiscent of The White Goddess. Certainly I would like to do some of my own research before subscribing to a rewrite of English history, but I must say elements of this book have the ring of truth, if not common sense. Anybody at all inclined, or if you need to be inspired to visit Wales: read it!
Very interesting view of the geography of Arthur's map of England.......2006-06-13
Speaking as a complete novice regarding the history and geography of England, I have to admit that the theory presented in this book made as much, if not more, sense to me than the accepted theory of where things were in Arthur's England.
I could never understand how so much arthurian history could have actually taken place in the far Northeast of England as it was simply too far away. And with no reason for it to be that far away.
Of course maybe my ready acceptance of their theory could simply be the result of my not having any reason to adhere to the accepted versions of where things were supposedly located.
I have tried to find additional discussion on the authors' theory but there doesn't seem to be much available. I wish there was.
Best bit of common-sense research for a long time.......2000-06-27
As someone very interested in Arthurian legends I bought this book not really expecting to read anything really new - especially as a work has recently appeared on Arthur in Wales. I was wrong!
O.K., you can argue about place names and whose source material is better than whose until doomsday, but nothing helps more to give a book that 'something extra' than a good dose of common-sense.
My initial reaction was one of sceptcism, especially when Geoffrey of Monmouth appeared on the scene, but I took a jump of faith and waded in. Once you have read the entire book - and not tried to nit pick on every individual piece of evidence - the overall picture is extremely convincing.
I may not agree with everything held within this books cover, but there is certainly enough here to warrant further study and debate. I take my hat off to the authors for an extremely well researched piece of work.
An intriguing, but flawed look at the historical Arthur.......2000-06-25
Most popular books in search of the historical Arthur (and there are many such books and just about as many theories regarding who the "real" Arthur was) use the same classic sources (Gildas, Nennius, Geoffrey of Monmouth, and a few others) and, increasingly, archaeological data. Welsh literary sources, such as the "Brut Y Brenhinedd," the Triads, and bardic poetry, are generally relegated to the background and are often wholly ignored, despite the rather obvious fact the Welsh people are the primary cultural heirs of whatever society in which the historical Arthur existed. Blake and Lloyd reverse this approach in "The Keys to Avalon," giving their main focus to such Welsh literary sources. Their approach certainly is not without controversy. They follow the lead of a few earlier writers who contend that at least some versions of the "Brut Y Brenhinedd" derive independently from the same source used by Geoffrey of Monmouth to write his great "Historia Regum Britanniae" and are not, as most scholars contend, simply Welsh translations of Geoffrey's work. The difference is crucial since the "Brut" uses Welsh names for locations which differ greatly from the English names in Geoffrey's book. Blake and Lloyd contend that Geoffrey altered the Welsh originals to make his book better suited for an English audience and for political purposes. This is an important point and, if true, could mean that the historical Arthur operated on a smaller stage (North Wales, for the most part) than most popular accounts which have him ranging over large portions of present-day England and Scotland. I certainly am not qualified to absolutely judge the validity of what Blake and Lloyd have to say on the matter, but I do hope their book inspires others to take a serious look at this possibility, either to confirm their analysis or to disprove it.
I have little doubt that Blake and Lloyd in their enthusiam for their Welsh-oriented reconstruction of Arthurian fact have at least in a couple areas gone well beyond what the evidence can support. Specifically, I find their claim that Offa's Dyke (a mammoth earthwork almost universally credited to the Eighth Century Mercian King Offa) was built by the Third Century Roman Emperor Severius to be entirely unconvincing. (There is now archaeological evidence that Wat's Dyke may date from the Fifth Century and thus might explain accounts of a wall in northern Wales prior to Offa.) And secondly, I consider their re-writing of the history of the Anglo-Saxon conquest of much of Britain (moving events from their traditional locations to an exclusively Welsh context) to be very unlikely, as it seems to ignore non-Welsh and archaeological sources that bear upon the question.
Nonetheless, I think that "The Keys to Avalon" is worth reading, even if with a sceptical eye, for its intriguing analysis of the North Wales sites associated with a possible historical Arthur.
The Dark Age Illuminations.......2000-06-24
Suddenly, the Dark Ages make sense.
The Keys to Avalon explores fact, folklore, myths and legends and brings them together in a work which offers a stunningly simple, logical explanation for why so many 'academics' have struggled for so long to make sense of the Dark Ages.
Put simply, it is the survival of the ancient Welsh language and culture which provides the Key to this new understanding of the Dark Ages.
Until this book, Arthurian (and other) legends associated with the Dark Ages have been interpreted from the anglicised (as in Anglo Saxon) view, with errors having crept in through translations from Welsh to Latin and then to English.
The Keys to Avalon goes back to the original Welsh records of these times, and unlocks the door to a greater understanding of the period by considering the meaning of the original Ancient Welsh language, which differs from the current Welsh language in some critical ways.
In 'The Keys to Avalon' the authors seem to have compared the ancient Welsh accounts of the Dark Ages with the standard versions based on the Anglo-Saxon accounts. The authors give due regard to the fact that there is often a grain of truth in folklore, myths and legends passed down verbally through the generations. This seems particularly appropriate in Wales where even today, despite the celebration of the survival of the Welsh language in the various Eisteddfodau, the majority of fluent Welsh speakers have difficulty in reading and writing the Welsh language.
This book brings to life the Welsh countryside - looking at names and features on maps and showing how the Arthurian legends suddenly 'fit' into specific geographic areas of realistic extent.
Once in a while something comes along which is so blindingly obvious that you think 'why didn't anyone say this before?' I can imagine there are a lot of academics and authors out there who will be wishing now that they had made the same efforts that Steve Blake and Scott Lloydd have in their work, which literally does rewrite Dark Age history.
This is a superb book which will be enjoyed by anyone with an open, unprejudiced, mind.
