Book Description
Using sensitive documents recently unsealed by the French government, Staman explores the life of Robert Denoel from his dramatic rise in publishing to his mysterious murder in 1945. A man of contradictions, Denoel published the works of anti-Semitics alongside the works of Jews and Marxists. In fact, during the same month that he went on trial for Nazi collaboration, he won the most prestigious prize in French literature, The Goncourt, for his publication of a work by Elsa Triolet, a Russian Jew and an ardent supporter of the Nazi Resistance movement. How Denoels company was acquired after his death by his nemesis, Gaston Gallimard, involves a riveting tale of crime, murder, betrayal, and cover-up not often found even in fiction. Set against the colorful backdrop of Paris from the roaring 20s through the turbulent Nazi occupation years in the 30s to the post-war investigation, this is a riveting story of a fascinating man.

Captivating.......2003-12-07
I heard about this book on an NPR talkshow. I was interested from the start and WOW what a different way to look at WWII.
Difficult to put down!.......2002-12-31
This is a really fascinating story with lots of interesting "characters". With the Stroke of a Pen is interesting on several levels: a behind the scenes look at the French literary world, an intimate look at everyday French life and a comprehensive discussion about the French Resistance and collaborationists during WWII who were sometimes one in the same. Staman does a great job setting the scene from indepth character descriptions to details of everyday life. She is great at walking the reader through this story as details unfold for her (it is refreshing to see the work that goes into a book, adding validity to all the facts). Staman knows when to share her thoughts and feelings wiht us, and when to let the scene takeover remaining a silent observer. Her creation of conversations is compelling and makes the book very difficult to put down!
I am also happy that Staman did not forget about Bebert (I know I didn't)and the footnote about Jean Loviton at the end was well deserved (sorry that's a bit cryptic, I don't want to give anything away:)
Wow! What a great story........2002-12-20
This is a book that builds and builds. By the end I could not stop reading. It puts events in post World War II France in a way that I had not seen before and arguably sheds new light on both the events of the time and the ultimate impact of the Nazi occupation. A super job of weaving true crime with actual historical events. My favorite kind of book.
Wonderfully written!.......2002-12-16
Although I am not finished with this book, I wanted to comment that the author (very uniquely) positioned herself within the story she tells...smoothly transitioning from historical accounts of the characters in the novel to what she was doing...feeling...when she came across a new piece of information. I've never read a novel told in this way before. Somehow, it makes an already gripping, true story more real.
Fantastic book thus far!
Unforgettable.......2002-12-16
There are many forgettable books, there are a few unforgettable books. I own this book, have read it from cover to cover, and found it literally stunning. This story of greed, collusion, and the murder of Robert DeNoel in Nazi occupied Paris is a fascinating and profound tapestry which reveals the threads of a real life murder mystery interwoven with threads of
generalized corruption, collaboration and duplicitous behavior which were the spawn of a fear induced societal mentality. This one is unforgettable.

response from author--problems fixed.......2005-02-24
Hi. I'm the author of this book. I just want to report that the problems mentioned by the previous reviewer have been fixed in the reprint. I just finished working on the corrections. This reprint should be available in May. I understand why the photos caused such concern and I can assure you they have been changed to my satisfaction. I have done my best to make this book useful and enjoyable.
Iguanas not simple; poor photo editing mars decent book.......2004-12-07
Anything published by T.F.H raises a red flag--they are notorious for outdated animal care information and obvious product-placement in photos to increase sales.
Flipping through the book, looking at photos like most readers, I see on pg. 14 that food offered to an adult iguana is in small chunks. This might work for an iguana of that size, but food should be shredded for younger and smaller iguanas.
On pg. 29, the photo used to show the sub-tympanic scale (slightly cropped on the right edge) also shows a developing abscess on the ig's lower jaw. I wonder if the picture editor really knew anything about iguanas--the way the photo is framed, it seems it was made to show the abscess, not the sub-tympanic scale and should have been rejected since the animal is not 100% healthy. The photo on page 41, poor handling technique is used to show femoral pores.
The worst example, however, is the photo on pg. 110, where an ig is offered a cricket via hemostats. The caption reads," Crickets and other animal matter are vital to an iguana's diet," yet within the actual text, the author states, "Never feed your iguana any animal protein."
Reading the text, this book is a decent guide to iguana care. However, the Polaroid-formatted photos and captions utterly undermine the text and, I suspect, the author's intent. Just who decided on the photos and their captions? Hopefully, should a 2nd edition be printed, these errors will be corrected!
Book Description
The sequel to Katherine Dewey's popular book "Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay", this time she pulls out all the stops to teach both novice and accomplished sculptors alike just how she creates the realistic figures she has been renowned for over her 30 year professional career. If you aspire to be a figurative sculptor or already are one, this is a book you must have. In her no-nonsense, show-how-it's-done teaching style, Katherine shows with more than 400 full color photos, detailed illustrations, and step-by-step instructions how to do it all. Her modeling methods are not complicated. Rather than relying on classical "muscle on bone" physiology, she teaches how to sculpt exquisite figurines in any scale using her simple applique approach. Her book teaches anyone how to sculpt realistic human figures, but there is much more between the covers of this 144 page resource. From selecting your clays, to making your own modeling tools, to proportioning your figures, posing, ethnic and gender subtleties, facial expressions and posing, costumes in clay, to finishing touches, Katherine teaches it all. As one early bird reviewer put it: "It's like having a master sculptor right here with me step by step".

Book Description
Alfred Byrd Graf is probably the most widely traveled plant explorer of the world's tropics and subtropics. Horticulturist, botanist, and professional photographer, he has roamed the earth in the spirit of Von Humboll, Darwin, and David Fairchild earlier in the 19th and 20th centuries, in search of exotic botanicals to add to the enlarging horticulture of the world. Among the honors received by the author are the award of the large Gold Medal of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the Certificate of Merit of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Distinguished Service Award of the Horticultural Society of New York, a Citation Award of the American Horticultural Society, and the Tercentenary Medalliou of the State of New Jersey. IN 1967 he was invested with the Sarah Champman Francis Medal of the Garden Club of America for outstanding literary achievement. In Pittsburgh, in 1972, Alfred Graf was elected to horticulture's hall of fame, the highest distinction given by the society of American Florists, and in 1978he was awarded the doctor of Science degree.
His most recent publications are TROPICA, Color-ama of Exotic Plants with 7000 photos incl. Plants indoors. Also Hortica (8100 photos), Color Cyclopedia of Garden Flora in all Climates showing Hardiness Zones.

Tropica Color Cyclopedia of Exotic Plants and Trees.......2005-12-13
I own the 5th edition. I glanced through a few pages (after having spent hours on the Internet researching tropical plants for my personal tropical garden) and had to buy it right then and there! I did not want to chance not being able to find it again. It's the best! I can't foresee ever having to wonder what any other tropical plant looks like! I've found plants in this book that I could not identify on the web or through local nurseries. I was not able to put this book down for hours after it's purchase and continue to use it almost daily. Totally worth the $185 price! If I'd lost it on the way home from having just purchased it, I'd be right back trying to buy another!
TROPICA.......2003-04-26
This book is the ultimate, before software, computers and Wal-Mart salespersons... .a book of this magnitude was and is still the Bible of horticulture.Alfred Graf, travels the world to bring the reader an astounding volume of plants both rare and usual, not only color photos but origins as well, which happens to be the best indicator of how a plant will thrive.I've owned this book for over twenty years, even replacing it after it was stolen. What else can I say...oh yeah,...Chrisalidocarpus Lutescens.
Tropica no Nonsense!.......2002-03-13
I recently got the chance to look over a copy of this book , and although I didn't get a chance to read it extensively nor in depth, I got the feeling that this was and is, one book , that no plant loving individuals library, should be with out. It is with out a doubt , a must have if you can get your hands on a copy.

Book Description
Hundreds of hardy people have tried to carve a living in the Alaskan bush, but few have succeeded as consistently as Heimo Korth. Originally from Wisconsin, Heimo traveled to the Arctic wilderness in his feverous twenties. Now, more than three decades later, Heimo lives with his wife and two daughters approximately 200 miles from civilization -- a sustainable, nomadic life bounded by the migrating caribou, the dangers of swollen rivers, and by the very exigencies of daily existence.
In The Final Frontiersman, Heimo's cousin James Campbell chronicles the Korth family's amazing experience, their adventures, and the tragedy that continues to shape their lives. With a deft voice and in spectacular, at times unimaginable detail, Campbell invites us into Heimo's heartland and home. The Korths wait patiently for a small plane to deliver their provisions, listen to distant chatter on the radio, and go sledding at 44° below zero -- all the while cultivating their hard-learned survival skills that stand between them and a terrible fate.
Awe-inspiring and memorable, The Final Frontiersman reads like a rustic version of the American Dream and reveals for the first time a life undreamed by most of us: amid encroaching environmental pressures, apart from the herd, and alone in a stunning wilderness that for now, at least, remains the final frontier.
Customer Reviews:
A must read.......2007-06-09
If you love adventure. If you love Alaska. Then you will love this book. A story that has it all. What an amazing family. I feel like I know them. A great story of sacrifice and adventure.
Much more than a story . . ........2007-02-28
Campbell's style of intermixing different time frames is most enjoyable, and kept reminding me that this wasn't just a tale, but about real people. It holds interest like the tales of the other frontiers people that we all know and love, but with much more reality - perhaps because it contains so very many of the human attributes - frustration, love, beauty, solace, tragedy, hardship, all interspersed with some extreme 'highs' that tend to remind us (me) how much our choices bring those same things, in greater or lesser degrees.
An Amazing Story!.......2006-05-16
The Final Frontiersman is a fascinating story of one man's personal journey from a difficult background in Wisconsin to the freedom and challenges of life in the most remote region in the U.S. The man, Heimo Korth, unexpectedly finds romance and a life partner - and establishes a close knit family while living outside the margins of what some call "civil society." A clear and wonderfully told story which unapologetically describes how Heimo and his native spouse, Edna, live a subsistence lifestyle - primarily on freshly killed, free-ranging caribou and moose. It also describes how swiftly tragedy can strike.
Beyond the surface, Frontiersman raises an interesting question about whether living a subsistence lifestyle - normally associated with destruction of wildife - is "bad" in the overall context of the ecological health of wildlife on the planet. This book caused me to reflect on the impact we urbanites have on wildlife as compared to the Korths: from bushmeat trade, to feed lots, to marine destruction caused by the use of fossil fuels. And yes - packaged meat is dead too.
It is an excellent read for anyone who wishes to understand how difficult, rewarding, and tragic frontier life can be - and how it can forge human relationships.
To the Korths.......2006-04-17
I just finished reading "The Final Frontiersman" and would recommend it to anyone. It's well-written, entertaining, and truly educational, not only about the hardships and joys of life in the Arctic bush but about the politics of Alaskan wilderness "preservation."
To the Korths: I admire your courage, sheer physical stamina, know-how, and determination to live life on your own terms. Would you be willing to provide an eiplogue to the book -- let your fans know how you're doing in town (Fairbanks or Center?), how the girls are doing in school and their path to adulthood, what Heimo is doing instead of trapping, how's Firth, etc. I am really rooting for your successful transition to town life and wish you the very best.
To Krin [assuming that the real Krin Korth wrote the last review about the bleeding hearts who are bothered by the concept of animal trapping]: Please don't take people's comments as a personal attack on you and your family, although I'm sure it's hard not to. People can be embarrassingly quick to rush in and judge things they know nothing about. You have lived more in your 17 or so years on this earth than people like that manage to live in 80. Be proud of all you learned in the bush from your amazing parents, because you'll carry that knowledge with you always.
Final Frontiersman.......2006-04-05
Most people do not understand what it is like to live in the bush, they are city people who just stay indoors most of their lives, they believe that people should not hunt or kill animals for their fur or for their meat, they read a book but dont like it becuase someone killed an animal in it, boo hoo. They are simpleminded people who dont know any better, natives and residents in Alaska do this everyday, and it most likely will no be changed for a long time, since they grew up around such things and live to do it every day. This book shows what it is really like in the Alaskan bush and if you dont like it, does it look like we care?

Artists' Private Lives: An amusing book.......2007-04-14
Lives of the Artists is light reading with approx. 2 pages of facts per artist, so it is not an in-depth look at their private lives; however put it on your "Fun" reading list. It is a highly amusing book and a great source of dinner conversation. Also Check out Lives of the Musicians:Good Times, Bad Times (and What the Neigbors Thought)
A Nice Introduction.......2006-03-13
I found this book while looking for a way to get my children more interested in art and famous artists from various periods. This book was exactly what I needed. It tells a little about each artist without being boring giving them a glimpse at each one. After reading this book to my 3 year old and then letting the 11 and 15 year old look it over, I was asked about various artists in the book which led us on hunts at the library for more information.
So this book makes a good introduction if you're wanting to just give your kids an idea of all the artists that have come and gone. I do agree with another reviewer that it would have been nice if they had included at least one piece of their artwork in the pages. Of course, that just means we will have to find them on our own which for us homeschoolers is part of the "thrill of the hunt".
What a fun, fun, book.. is it really for children?.......2005-12-13
I found this book in the children's section of the library, but this is not a children's book; although children might enjoy it. This book is very reminiscent of the "Politically Incorrect Bedtime Stories" series. It's a wonderfully campy little book full of facts about just how bizarre artists are. It would make a great coffee table book. I just loved it! I can't wait to read the companion book about musicians.
Art book without art.......2005-01-23
I have mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed it because it puts some of the humanity back into a subject many of whose personalities have been so lionized that they have become icons, non-people. However, I'm not certain to whom I might recommend it.
To begin with, the book has the direct, simple style of books written for children, grades 4-8. The language is a little too complex for those under age 8, the style a little too simple for those over age 13. Since I occasionally read children's books anyway, this did not stop me as an adult from reading the book and taking satisfaction from doing so. Nor would I have had any problem with recommending the volume for a school or public library, except....
I enjoyed the book primarily because I had already had a rather extensive exposure to art of all types through my mother, who was a working artist herself. Our house was littered with books about artists and their art works, and I started visiting museums in her company from the age of six. When Lives of the Artists: Masterpieces, Messes (and What the Neighbors Thought) discussed Rembrandt, I already possessed a pretty clear impression of his style and of some of his more famous works. The possibility that the he did not paint Man with a Golden Helmet surprised me, because I have a very clear picture of the work-one of my favorite Rembrandts-in my head. Someone who didn't would find it difficult to care; it would be just another bit of free-floating information.
In short, the book fails to fulfill a goal as a vehicle of teaching young people-or any people-about art because there are no illustrations of it. While there are entertaining anecdotes about a nice selection of famous people who perform a variety of styles of art, they might be anyone with eccentric behavior.
I'm not certain where the fault for this glaring defect lies. Perhaps it arises from an attempt to produce an interesting and attractive book that is still affordable, especially for children. Perhaps it was a matter of inability to procure a right to reproduce a work of art belonging to someone who has exclusive rights over it. Still, I find it difficult to believe that the museums of the world would be unwilling for their masterpieces to be represented in a book on famous art, especially for children, if only because it represents free publicity for their establishment. Certainly if any given museum is unwilling, there are other works of art from which to choose: therein lies a certain degree of leverage.
Whatever the reason for the lack of art in an art book, I can only suggest this book to schools that provide a thorough grounding in the subject. An art teacher might give lectures on periods of art, their characteristic works and personalities, and suggest that this book might be fun to read. For a young person who has been prepared, this might return "great" art once again to the realm of human endeavor.
Excellent Way to Get More Acuainted with the Great Artists!.......2004-05-04
It was interesting to read about the eccentric personality characteristics of the great artists and how they found their specialty areas of creativity. I especially enjoyed learning more about Cassatt and O'Keefe and how they encountered a lot of criticism during their time and how they were not afraid to be themselves and BE GREAT! I will share this book with my son when he is ready for it. Right now he is only nine, and too much into sports(ha.)
Ansel Adams should have been included.
Jeffrey McAndrew
author of "Our Brown Eyed Boy"
Book Description
Few aspects of American military history have been as vigorously debated as Harry Truman's decision to use atomic bombs against Japan. In this carefully crafted volume, Michael Kort describes the wartime circumstances and thinking that form the context for the decision to use these weapons, surveys the major debates related to that decision, and provides a comprehensive collection of key primary source documents that illuminate the behavior of the United States and Japan during the closing days of World War II.
Kort opens with a summary of the debate over Hiroshima as it has evolved since 1945. He then provides an historical overview of the events in question, beginning with the decision and program to build the atomic bomb. Detailing the sequence of events leading to Japan's surrender, he revisits the decisive battles of the Pacific War and the motivations of American and Japanese leaders. Finally, Kort examines ten key issues in the discussion of Hiroshima and guides readers to relevant primary source documents, scholarly books, and articles.
These primary source documents comprise the largest part of this volume. They are organized into seven categories: American civilian documents; American military documents; MAGIC diplomatic summaries; Japanese government and military documents and diary entries; Japanese surrender documents; the United States Strategic Bombing Survey Summary Report and Interrogations of Japanese Officials; and Statements of Japanese Officials on World War II compiled by the Military Intelligence Section of the United States Army.
Kort's clear, insightful narrative examines conflicting points of view on numerous issues but remains impartial throughout. Above all, by providing a broad range of documents, including translations of Japanese language materials, Kort makes it possible for readers to render informed and independent judgments in the ongoing debate.
Customer Reviews:
We've Been At War Since 1941.......2007-02-14
This book is a series of essays on the history of 'The Long War.' This war began in about 1941 and has continued with more or less shooting ever since. It has been marked, as have all wars, with instances of incompetence, poor judgment, a callow unwillingness to face the facts, ignorance, prejudice, and irrational hysteria.
Each essay is independent and covers the personal interests/expertise of the writer. Through them all, however, a common theme emerges that the war making institutions, be they in the defense community, defense industries, or intelligence agencies have not performed to the standard that one would hope.
This book is a history. The authors are primarily history professors at U.S. universities. Unfortunately being historians, the authors do not make many projections of the future. Perhaps though, this is impossible, and 'The Long War' will continue forever. It certainly seems that it's current incarnation of 'The War on Terror' seems to have no foreseeable end. Yesterday even the Democratic candidates were talking of bombing Pakistan and even threatening to use nuclear weapons.

Book Description
The internment of thousands of Japanese Americans during World War II is one of the most shameful episodes in American history. This history and reference guide will help students and other interested readers to understand the history of this action and its reinterpretation in recent years, but it will also help readers to understand the Japanese American wartime experience through the words of those who were interned. Why did the U.S. government take this extraordinary action? How was the evacuation and resettlement handled? How did Japanese Americans feel on being asked to leave their homes and live in what amounted to concentration camps? How did they respond, and did they resist? What developments have taken place in the last twenty years that have reevaluated this wartime action? A variety of materials is provided to assist readers in understanding the internment experience. Six interpretive essays examine key aspects of the event and provide new interpretations based on the most recent scholarship. Book Description
In a compact guide to essential sources, this bibliography covers the Soviet armed forces from the birth of the Red Army and the origins of the Soviet military system to the demise of the Soviet Union. The authors have selected over 1,400 titles that accommodate both wider interests and those of the specialist. Taking accessibility into account, they have provided a wealth of information on sources available in the West. The bibliography opens with a section on reference sources and the imperial antecedents to the Soviet system. Part Two includes chapters on the Revolution and Civil War, the period from 1922-1940, and the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. In the concluding section, the authors cover the postwar period. The final chapter, "Breakthrough Books," includes those works that have radically influenced the perception and discussion of Soviet military affairs.

Customer Reviews:
for the serious scholar.......1999-10-26
A very useful guide to the Chennault Papers, covering the American Volunteer Group and the 14th Air Force. Note that there is a microfilm version of the Chennault Papers at the Library of Congress, as well as the originals at Stanford. Though the LOC version is differently cataloged, the published guide can still lead you to what you want; once you get to the LOC manuscript room, you can supplement it with a paper finding aid. I spent weeks reading this material for Flying Tigers: Claire Chennault and the American Volunteer Group.
