Book Description
From picnic spots and beaches in the Picos and the Pyrenees to a hike through an enchanted painted forest, this fully revised third edition of Footprint Northern Spain presents plenty of little-visited places in the heart of one of Europe's most toured countries. The guide covers Northern Spain comprehensively, including the Basque city of Bilbao, the ritzy resort town of San Sebastian, the green hills of Galicia, and the scorched plains of Aragon, as well as Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y Leon, Cantabria, and Asturias. Though the book emphasizes the good life — festivals, tapas bars, folk dancing, wine tasting, and cider sipping — it also details the entire pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. This informed guide is the ideal companion for adventurous independent travelers looking to get off of the beaten track.
Book Description
From the green hills of Galicia to the scorched plains of Aragon, this book gets off the beaten track and discovers plenty of untouched places in the heart of one of Europe's most visited lands. The only comprehensive guide to Northern Spain, this Footprint handbook covers the Basque country (San Sebastian and Bilbao), Navarra, Aragon, La Rioja, Castilla y Leon, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. Author Andy Symington delights in telling it like it is, focusing on the cultural and historical differences that characterize the area. With an emphasis on the good life, he describes tapas bars, wine tasting, and spectator sports. Taking a scenic walk, enjoying a picnic, going to the beach, and exploring the Picos and the Pyrenees are only a few of the many outdoor activities for travelers. The handbook fully details the entire pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela and lists the numerous festivals of northern Spain. Descriptions of a wide range of accommodations are helpful to travelers on any budget. A double-page, full-color front map illustrates the region's highlights, while a new-and-improved table of contents helps readers quickly find the information they need.
Customer Reviews:
They did it again!.......2004-03-24
Well, I'm again here recommending a Footprint book. I took two weeks off and travelled from San Sebastian to Vigo, and from there to Portugal (where I used a Michelin for a three day stay). If you have more than a week, Footprint is the way to go (and read the guide BEFORE travel, like always). Is a great thing that they decided to write this sector guides (about only a part of a country) because it allows you to take in some areas without feeling that you paid for something that you will not use. Also, it represents better the way I do tourism. The cheap hotel (pensions) reccommendations where incredibly accurate (and I saved a lot of euros without losing quality). One line even mentioned a dog pertaining to a hostel owner, and since the dog passed away last year the owner wanted to see the guide to remember him and was happy to see that his dog will always be in a printed page! (that was in Oviedo). Continue with the good job people.

Book Description
From 1937 Ireland to petty theft as a teenager in London, Sydney Gottfried grew into a high-life of international double-dealing. Owner of a casino and nightclub, his many deals involve fake scotch, violent Soho hookers, counterfeit money, mobsters, diamonds, Swiss banks and scams against the American public. Gottfried is resolutely crooked and his scams-some explained in detail-are at times darkly humorous. Yet the vicious gravitas of his lifestyle draws him tragically, inevitably, to bloody murder.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible.......2004-08-06
Incredible, incredible but there the cons are supported by evidence, or at least some of them are. Really enjoyed this book and once I started reading I could not put it down. Brings out the crook in me as it makes me want to try some of the cons out, but I don't think I will!
rose tinted.......2004-03-12
May be a good read but a travisty of the truth.
Excellent story - Even though he's a con man, it rings true.......2003-07-11
I know I know, anything a good con man says rings true. In this case, though, there's nothing for the con to gain from what he tells. He goes to jail a few times, so he doesn't present himself as infallible or demonically intelligent. He goes after greedy and corrupt people, but he also goes after honest folks, so he's not trying for a Robin Hood image. He even admits to corrupting his mother into petty larceny and other crimes. It's a rollicking good tale, better than The Grifters (and I loved The Grifters.) And his story, though I think it's true, follows an incredibly well-shaped arc. It reads like a great, awful, humorous, tragic novel, even though it really happened. I couldn't put it down.

Book Description
Readers of the first book in this two-volume series (A Treasury of Magical Knitting) have fallen in love with the new world of Magical Knitting, a dimension so simple yet so captivating that one could spend a year exploring the huge variety of designs which Cat offers. Beginning with Cat's unique Moebius Cast-On, which is so easy that she usually demonstrates it in workshops behind her back while twirling slowly around on one foot, the reader first learns to knit a Moebius band, or scarf. This is the magic key that opens the way to all the other designs. The Second Treasury includes felted baskets (with no inside or outside!), felted fringed bowls, felted and unfelted sling bags, six different felted cat beds (one with paws and a tail!), and the trifold designs, including a knitter's bowl with pockets for tools and a place to keep working yarn away from playful felines. The Felted Needle Cozies, colorful, highly textured sheaths to hold straight needles, and the felted wallets are both excellent patterns for beginners and first-time felters. The book includes detailed information on felting, designing, and yarn substitutions.
Customer Reviews:
Magical Moebius Worlds.......2007-08-23
I bought this book on a recommendation from a friend. I immediately knew I wanted to make the marvelous moebius scarf pictured in the book. Cat's photographic directions on how to do the magical cast-on were excellent, and I managed to make a scarf. It finished with an applied i-cord edging, which I had never done before, but once again, her photographs made the directions very clear. I've made 3 of these scarves and they are quite fascinating.
I'm now ready to attempt some of the wonderful baskets that she features in the book. I want to see how some of them would work up in self striping yarn. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something a bit different.
Excellent fun!.......2007-07-21
Although I find the projects in the first book more interesting, there are enough in this one to justify buying it - especially the bowls and cat beds. The Mobius Cast on pages are very clear, as are the instructions for Round One. I used her suggestion of a smaller needle on the left side and found my stitches slipping quite nicely on my Denise cords. No need to go out and buy more circs. Hurray! However the suggestion for using two circs on the body of the bowl was not necessary as I used a 16 inch and then double pointeds at the ending.
I am having great fun using up partial balls and adding eyelash and ribbon yarn as fun striping and edging. Also I had been wanting to learn the I-cord bind off for a while. Cat's instructions are definitely easy to follow. This is a book for adventurous knitters unless you have worked the first book so are familiar with mobius knitting.
Not as great as I thought it would be.......2007-02-14
I bought the "Treasury of Magical Knitting" and this book. One would have been enough.
emperor's new clothes.......2007-02-09
I paid nearly $30 for this book and wish I'd spent it on something more worthwhile. The Moebius cast-on is nothing more than a provisional cast-on done on a looped circular needle. While the introductory project, a Moebius scarf, drapes nicely, it's hardly worth a $30 book just for the casting-on method. The rest of the designs are unattractive. I couldn't care less if the strap on a bag is twisted. Ny cats would undoubtedly turn up their noses at a knitted bed (no matter how many hours I'd spent on it). And unless I'm missing something in the photos, anything felted won't show whether it's been knit by the moebius cast on or simply begun as a strip conventionally cast on and off, given a half-twist and joined at the ends, and the long side's stitches picked up again. I think we have something of a boondoggle here.
Mobius rocks.......2007-01-07
I am a new knitter. After taking a class on the Mobius method, and getting into Cat Bordhi's fun and quirky head, it will be very boring for me to pick-up any of my other started projects. I have this and the first book, and was able to create many quick christmas presents that were a hit. Cat has found many ways that have simplified so many of the knitting methods, I am now able to transfer her methods to other knitting book patterns that I was afraid to try. I highly recommend trying these 2 books, you won't believe how how fun and strange it is, and knitting will never be the same for you.
Book Description
Outwitting Poison Ivy is a factual and sometimes humorous look at some of the most irksome weeds in the woods. It identifies poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac, and enables anyone to identify these plants accurately in the field with detailed drawings and photographs.
In addition, Hauser addresses: the lore and history of poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac; useful and dangerous folk remedies; how to prevent exposure to poisonous plants; how to treat the effects of poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac after exposure; how poisonous plants spread; how they may be eradicated.
Outwitting Poison Ivy concludes with the latest information on treatment, prevention, and research. It is perfect for parents, gardeners, hikers, bikers, and is a worthy addition to any medicine cabinet.
Customer Reviews:
Itch..................2005-09-07
Ok so I'll admit that what attracted me to this book was the fact that I am a Poison Ivy survivor. Anyone who has lived through the two to three week nightmare of poison ivy will agree that for the rest of your life a certain amount of fear lives in your psyche, of ever becoming infected again. So that was what prompted me to pick the book up. It was an interesting read, including the little personal stories related by other suffers. I will however say that this book had nothing new to offer short of perhaps, that certain toilet seats made in China could give you a case of Ivy rash as they are lacquered with a plant which is similar in make up to Poison Ivy. Good luck if you have the rash, I myself recommend spending a lot of time sitting in a hot tub, or if you can swimming in the ocean, since those are the only two things that seemed to give me any relief. Oh and keep telling yourself it will only last three weeks.
Great book on Poison Ivy.......2003-05-31
Informative, well written and easy to read book on poison ivy. Includes stories of other's experiences with poison ivy and the treatments they had to endure in the past. It is one of those books that you'll have to read sections out loud to others around you.
Easy To Use, Easy To Understand.......2002-09-18
If you don't known much about the trio of poisonous plants, this book is a good place to start. It has a satisfying amount of information for identifying poison ivy, oak or sumac, where they are most likely to be found, plus scientific background and history. Then it provides guidelines for classifying your sensitivity and what to expect in a reaction, as well as ideas for remedies and prevention. Also included are stories from other poison ivy sufferers so the book does tend to repeat itself when discussing how the common myths are misleading. But because it has decent photos for quick identification; handy charts for finding desired info fast and basic tips for avoidance, makes this book a good reference to have on hand. Not to mention that it's size makes it an easy one to pack with your gear for extended trips into the backwoods.
Prevention is the best way to outwit the effects of poison ivy and this book will inform you on all you need to know. {After reading, I couldn't help but notice that the cover image is inadequate, because the poisonous plants described have white berries, not red.}
Debunking the myth of Poison Ivy.......2001-10-03
A concise, informative book debunking the myths of the dreaded poison ivy. While no miracle cures were given, practical information was presented dealing with avoiding, treating,and understanding the plant and its effects on people. I reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys the outdoors!
Book Description
Susan Farren didnt plan on marrying a fireman. Having herself spent several years as a paramedic, she knew too well the dangers of the emergency profession. But as fate would have it, she met Danand everything changed. Suddenly she was married to a man who had wanted to be a fireman ever since he was a child, and she found herself faced with the sacrifices and struggles that accompany this challenging career. Being a firemans wife meant relocating her family, living without her husband for days at a time, and wondering every time she heard a siren if he would make it home safely. Ultimately, it also meant receiving the phone call every firemans wife fears may come: the news that her husband had been in an accident. Susan speaks on behalf of thousands of firemens wives nationwidethe women who hold down the fort while their husbands are on the job. Their sacrifice is our gain, and for the first time, this book tells their story.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to relate to........2007-01-20
A funny, insightfull, and often scary look into the life of a firefighters wife.
First at bat....homerun!.......2006-07-21
It doesn't matter whether or not you're a fireman or a firefighter's spouse, you will get a kick out of this book. By the time you're half way through The Fireman's Wife, you'll be in love with this family. Susan's writing is personable and informative about the pride and pitfalls of being in fire service. Applicable to anybody with a loved one serving the public and risking their life for the rest of us (fire, police, military, etc.). Hopefully we'll see more from this inspired author. Bravo
Highly Recommended!.......2006-07-01
After reading about the process to become a firefighter, the smells and feels of the firehouse, what it's like to have 5 children while your husband is at work, and what it feels like when that dreaded phone call finally comes, I feel as though I was seeing life through the eyes of Sue Farren. It has a wonderful balance of sentimentality and sarcasm, which keeps the readers on their toes. With a solid foundation in her faith, and a heart that has gradually grown accustomed to a life of weird schedules and an adopted family of firefighters, Sue Farren is the perfect woman to have written a memoir that represents anyone who's ever had a family member in the fire service. Great job!
-Jill Thornton, author of "Running Through Deserts"
A Man Called Dan.......2006-04-24
Friends in Petaluma, a small city about a hour's drive north of here, still talk about the hero fireman who's the eponymous victim in Susan Farren's THE FIREMAN'S WIFE, and how he managed to rehabilitate himself with the help of many trained professionals and pulled himself out of a near death experience. Well, he didn't do it alone, and as we find out in Susan Farren's book, he did it with the knowledge that she would be in his corner from now to forever. They have five adorable kids, and it isn't always easy being Susan Farren, but she sort of knew what she was getting into and it doesn't seem as though she had any regrets.
Having him underfoot while he healed up from his njuries would try the patience of a saint, and though she is no plaster angel, she shows remarkable forebearance. There was one dramatic episode that will haunt her all the days of her life, and she takes us through this agony step by step, when, one day, she was in a restaurant with three of the kids, and she got into the car leaving the baby on the sidewalk, and she drove away till one of the older kids asked, "Where's the baby?" When she drove back cop cars with flashing lights were already swarming around the apparently abandoned infant. It was excruciating, and they made her feel like an abusive, uncaring welfare mother. As a former paramedic, Susan knows emergency medicine, and she knows how her case must have seemed from the outside. It was upsetting indeed, but at the end of a long day she did not go to jail, and they returned her baby to her arms, but Don did find out and it created a strain between them.
However, the Farrens' real "baptism of fire" came on a Petaluma November, and when it was over, seven lives were changed forever. You'll weep buckets trying to imagine what it would have been like to have a husband incapacitated in the line of duty, a man called Dan. not for nothing does she quote the famous "Fireman's Prayer," which ends so sadly:
And if according to Your will
I have to lose my life
Please bless with Your protecting hand
My family, children, and my wife.
I'm "the fireman's kid" - this was my story too!.......2006-04-16
Susan Farren wrote an amazing, detailed, funny, heartfelt description of a fireman's family. As the daughter of a fireman, I remember visits to the station, crawling on the engines and trucks,dad being gone on "OT", and how much he looked forward to his 4-days, so we could all spend time together. Seeing the life of a fireman's wife described so well makes me appreciate so much more what my own mom went through when I was little.

Pictures painted in subtle brush strokes.......2001-06-19
As I read these stories I had to constantly remind myself that the author was a man. This is because, not only are most of the stories written from a woman's viewpoint, but it is done so convincingly. I often found myself nodding in the way you do, when someone has gotten it "so right."
I have read women writers who don't do this nearly so well. That is because they insist on painting their pictures with the broad brush strokes of major events--the death of a parent; the breakup of a relationship; recovered memory of past abuse; and, often times, all three at once. But Bausch relies on subtle brush strokes. The only death that occurs is related second-hand, and plays only a supporting roll in the story of the pending break-up of a marriage. Mostly, he writes about the every day things, visits with in-laws, the weekly gathering of friends, things that would not cause the outsider to see anything abnormal. Yet, through subtle clues, like one wife choosing to leave !the group and go to bed, we learn, that everything is not fine. Indeed, there is trouble on the horizon.
If you require major plot lines,and exciting endings, you'll want to pass on this one. But if you are someone who enjoys the true art of short stories, you need to read this. Indeed, Bausch's work could serve as an example of what short story writing should be.
Bausch does an excellent job of pulling you into his stories.......1999-10-15
Richard Bausch's collection of short stories are really great to read as in-betweens. My required reading for classes keeps me busy, but I can hardly wait to grab a minute to read another. "Missy"(which is not included in this collection) is great for the short story lover.

Customer Reviews:
not good.......2005-05-27
I did not read this book as a true fan should never look into this book. If you want to know the history of slipknot, then buy the book that was actually put out by roadrunner and authorized by the band. One reason that they started putting on the mask was to freak you out, why take away that by wanting to know what they look like. Plus, if you are a fan, then you already know what they look like from some of their side projects. Also they wear mask to make sure that punk butt kids don't bother their familys and them when they are out and about. Please, respect the band and respect their familys. Don't buy this book and be a poser.
this is an insult to the band and all maggots.......2003-11-19
This is an insult to all maggots and the band alike. We have heard there story many times, and it is good to hear it, but when you go and sneak pictures of them without there masks on it is disturbing there personal space! This is not a book for true maggots, it is a book for stupid people who only like to hear whats in the news and when stars are in trouble about something or another. The greatest thing about slipknot was that you didnt know what they looked like, and now the media is trying to take that away!! I advise you do NOT read this book!!!
This is an insult to slipknot and true maggots.......2003-11-19
This is just an insult to all maggots and the band. This book is just there to bother all of the band members, we have heard there story lots of times, and its good to know it. But when you go in and get the pictures of them with out there masks it is disturbing there personal space! If they wanted everyone to see what there faces look like then they would do it at a concert or a live apearence. One of the greatest things about slipknot was that you didnt know what they looked like, and now the media is trying to take that away too. I advise you to NOT read this book!!!
A Message To All.......2002-06-18
First off, no I didn't read the book, nor do I want to. So why am I posting a review you ask? I'll tell you why. This book is anti-Slipknot just because it even exists. For all the Maggots out there, we already know their story, and what they have to say. If we wanna know something from the guys, we can just ask and what we don't know, we wont know. They're people too, just like the rest of us. Everyone deserves personal space. This book is for people that can't fathom Slipknot. We get the message and that's all the matters. The Knot will reveal themselves when they're ready, a book isn't needed. To all the true Maggots, support The Knot. (SIC)
The return of Crambo.......2001-11-30
This is a great book about a stupendous "visual" rock band by a guy who is real rock 'n' roll writing legend, Mr. Mark Crampton (with a little help from his two worthy collaborators). What this guy doesn't know about rock'n'roll you could write on the back of a ukelele plectrum, so it's unlikely that Slipknot have slipped anything past his hawk-like gaze. I remember his incisive writing in the great early 90s rock mag, Riff Raff. Of course, he's toned down the style somewhat for the Slipknot fans, but this is still metal-to-the-pedal, hellbent-for-leather, turbo-charged rock'n'roll writing.

Product Description
`History: Fiction or Science? Chronology 2` is the second volume of the most explosive and astounding tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by rock solid scientific data. The book is easy and pleasant to read; it is well-illustrated, contains hundreds of charts, graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays. You will be amazed to discover: - That the chronology universally accepted today and taken for granted is simply wrong; - That ALL methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts known today are erroneous or non-exact; - That there is not a single document that could be reliably dated earlier than the XIth century; The Author refers to the Middle Ages as the Antiquity and proves mutual superimposition of the Second and the Third Roman Empire, both of which become identified as the respective kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Furthermore, he asserts that the famous reform of the Occidental Church in the XI century by Pope Gregory Hildebrand was the reflection of the XII century reforms of Byzantine emperor Andronicus who in his turn identifies with Jesus Christ. The Trojan war counted by Homer happened only as late as of the XIII century A.D. and the great poet actually lived in XIV century A.D. No stone in history of Antiquity is left unturned. Literally. This book is the beginning of a major correction to the chronology we live with.

I don't care what other people say of this book. Those affirmig it's fake, they hadn't ever read it. Or have some special reasons to do so. "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see..." This book won't make you feel comfortable. It'll make you feel free. It'll make you feel you're "not the only one" to feel you'd been lied to for centuries.
Suprise! Suprise!.......2007-03-22
Here is a serie of books which turns "the whole world" upside down. I learned a lot of it and I hope that a new book from A.T. Fomenko will follow very quick. A absolute must for everybody who is interested in history or even a little bit from it.
Prescient St Augustine?.......2006-02-05
We can so far divide the New Chronology into the following three parts:
a) The verifiable theory that proves consensual chronology wrong with the aid of astronomy, statistics and mathematics;
b) The new chronology hypothesis based on a new understanding of known historical facts and the most likely logical explanation of the most obvious inconsistencies inherent in the official version of history;
c) The history conjectures, that is experimental historical reconstructions based on assumptions that the authors believe to make sense in the light of their research and linguistic parallels - void of ironclad factual support to date.
Fomenko's theory complies with the most rigid scientific standards as a whole:
It gives a coherent explanation of what we already know.
- It is consistent: independent lines of inquiry all lead to the same conclusion.
- The predictions it makes are confirmed empirically.
Fomenko goes by the following axioms:
- Chronology is the basis of history;
- Human evolution has always been linear, gradual and irreversible;
- The "cyclic" nature of human civilization is a myth, likewise all the gaps, duplicates, "dark ages" and "renaissances" that we know from consensual history;
- The accumulation of geographical knowledge as reflected in cartography is a gradual and irreversible process;
- The chronological distance between a given manuscript and the events described therein is proportional to the amount of distortions it contains;
- There is no "useless" information in authentic ancient sources.
Why the mainstream historians do not shower mathematician Academician Dr.Prof Fomenko with thanks and laurels?
The Russians:
Because Fomenko asserts that there was no such thing as the Tartar and Mongol invasion followed by three centuries of slavery, providing a formidable body of documental evidence to prove his assertion. The so-called "Tartars and Mongols" were the actual ancestors of the modern Russians, living in a bilingual state with Arabic spoken as freely as Russian. The ancient Russian state was governed by a double structure of civil and military authorities. The hordes were actually professional armies with a tradition of lifelong conscription (the recruitment being the so-called "blood tax"). Their "invasions" were punitive operations against the regions that attempted tax evasion. Fomenko proves that Russian history as we know it today is a blatant forgery concocted by a host of German scientists brought to Russia by the usurper dynasty of the Romanovs, whose ascension to the throne was the result of coup d'état, charged with the mission of making their reign look legitimate. Fomenko proves Ivan the Terrible to be a collation of four rulers, no less. They represented the two rival dynasties - the legitimate rulers and the ambitious upstarts. The winner took it all! Over some 30 years of controversy, Russian historians have made a most remarkable transition - they were initially accusing the young mathematician Fomenko of anticommunist dissident activity and attempts to deface the historical legacy of Soviet Russia; nowadays the middle-aged mathematician is accused of adhering to "pro-communist Russian nationalism" and defacing the proud historical legacy of Great Russia.
The Westerners:
Because Fomenko blows consensual Russian history to smithereens, successfully removing a crucial cornerstone from underneath the otherwise impeccable edifice of World History. Fomenko adds insult to injury, wiping out one by one the Ancient Rome (the foundation of Rome in Italy is dated to the XIV century A. D.), the Ancient Greece and its numerous poleis, which he identifies as the mediaeval crusader settlements on the territory of Greece, and the Ancient Egypt (the pyramids of Giza become dated to the XI-XV century A. D. and identified as the royal cemetery of the Global "Mongolian" Empire, no less). The civilization of the Ancient Egypt is irrefutably dated to the XII-XV century A. D. with the aid of the ancient Egyptian horoscopes cut in stone. He was the first one to decipher and date all such horoscopes, coming up with mediaeval dates in every case. English historians rage at the suggestion that the history of Ancient England was de facto a Byzantine import transplanted to the English soil by the fugitive Byzantine nobility. To reward the English historians who consider themselves the true scribes of World History, the cover of the present book portrays Tintoretto's Jesus Christ crucified on the Big Ben.
The Chinese:
Because Fomenko wipes out the Ancient History of China outright. No such thing. Full point. The compilation of the so-called Ancient Chinese History is reliably datable to the XVII-XVIII century only. It is perfectly recognizable as the Ancient European history, reworked and transcribed in hieroglyphs as yet another historical transplantation, this time performed on the Chinese soil by the loving Jesuit hands. The Chinese are the next in line to go berserk. Chinese history is inevitably bound to get both more ancient and more eventful, proportionally to the growing involvement of China in the world affairs. Chinese historians will keep on finding valid proof of prehistoric Chinese spaceflights until the Politburo orders them to shut up.
The Arabs:
Too bad. Islam with all its key figures is datable to XV-XVI century A. D. Arabic historians may find consolation in the crucial historical role of the Ottoman Empire in the XVI-XVII century. The trouble is that this empire was initially a Christian state, with Hagia Sophia identifiable as Temple of Solomon, according to Fomenko! We can only guess if the acquisition of Alexander the Great (a Macedonian and a Christian) as the founder of the Muslim World Empire will make Fomenko's theories more acceptable to the Arabic mainstream. He certainly does not spare any holy cows at all, claiming The Stone of Qa'Aba in Mecca to contain the lost Arch of the Covenant.
The Divinity:
Despite of reiterated statement that his theory is all about chronology and not Religion, Fomenko stirs up a whole condominium of wasp nests. His collection of anathemas, fatwa, and other condemnations from all parties concerned is already considerable. Little wonder, considering that the history of religions à la Fomenko looks as follows: the pre-Christian period (before the XI century and JC), Bacchic Christianity (XI-XII century, before and after JC), JC Christianity (XII-XVI century) and its subsequent mutations into Orthodox Christianity, the Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, and so on.
According to Fomenko we know strictly NOTHING about the events that predate the X century A. D.
St Augustin was prescient when he spoke unto us: "be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth."
Something of a disappointment.......2005-09-09
After having read the first volume of this expected series of 7 volumes I was triggered by the thesis of these authors that ancient Greek and Roman history did in fact take place in the Middle Ages. So I started studying medieval history of the Middle East - also known as Islamic history - to find out if the opponents of the ancient Greeks and Romans - the Acheamenid Persians, Sassanids, Scythians, Egyptians, etc. - also have their duplicates in medieval history. My search was disappointing: none of the many medieval Islamic dynasties seemed to correspond to the ancient middle eastern rulers.
However, I did find a close correspondence between Herodotus' Persian kings and medieval events:
- the defeat and capture of an Anatolian king - the Lydian Croesus - by the Persian conqueror Cyrus is identical to the defeat and capture of another Anatolian king - sultan Bayezid - by the Asian/Mongol conqueror Tamerlane;
- the Persian conquest of Egypt by the cruel tyrant Cambyses reds almost exactly as the Ottoman conquest of Egypt by Selim the Grim (note the nickname!);
- Darius the Lawgiver of the Persian Empire looks very much alike to Sulayman the Magnificent, the Lawgiver in Islamic history;
- Xerxes, whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by the Greeks at the naval battle of Salamis, looks like Selim II (the Sot) whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by a Spanish-Italian alliance at the naval battle of Lepanto.
I should have expected Fomenko et al. to arrive at similar conclusions, however, they claim that the Persian kings are the alter egos of the Angevin kings of Sicily whose biographies do not contain the exploits of the Persian kings.
The similiarities I indicate lead to the conclusion that Herodotus must have written his Histories at the close of the 16th century. But this is extremely late, given that Herodotus is "the Father of History", so therefore all other "ancient" histories must have been fabricated even later. Yet, the founders of modern chronology - Scaliger and Petavius - laid their foundations also at the close of the 16th century and had the full corpus of ancient histories already at their disposal.
It seems to me that Fomenko has to address these inconsistencies, maybe in the forthcoming 5 volumes?
Another critique of their book is that the correspondencies between different rulers are often based on a superficial comparison of the biographies; upon a more thorough comparison many details appear that do not correspond at all.
Finally, the authors rely heavily on the works of Gregorovius (1821-1891!!) - his medieval histories of Rome and Athens - as the source of medieval history; these works are - at least in the West - hoplessly outdated and have been superceded by more up-to-date works (for instance, Julius Norwich's trilogy on Byzantine history is not even cited).
Romulus courts Helen, Paris founds Rome, Moses goes to Troy.........2005-07-30
If you agree with Fomenko that Roman chronology is basically the foundation of the entire edifice of global chronology; you would also certainly agree that despite its numerous gaps and inconsistencies, Roman history is the best-documented field of ancient history, and thus a reference scale. But how well is the actual date of the Eternal City's foundation known?
Firstly, Rome is supposed to have been founded by the Trojans who had to flee after the fall of Troy. Some claim Rome to have been founded by Aeneas and Ulysses shortly after Troy had fallen; others are of the opinion that there was an entire dynasty that ruled for 500 years between the fall of Troy and the foundation of Rome.
Well, that's just an innocent 500 years long misunderstanding compared with what heretic Fomenko says, asserts, proves in his second volume: Second Roman Empire, Third Roman Empire, Biblical Kingdom of Israel, Biblical Kingdom of Judah, Holy Roman Empire are stories about basically same events, written from different points of view at different times. The underlying events have actually taken place during xii-xv cy. These histories have been written and perfected by multitude of highly talented humanist and clerical writers of xiii-xvi cy disguised as "ancients" with glorious names like Homer, Pluto, Thucydides etc..Chronology 2.0 beta..
Historians are kindly invited to report the bugs.

A detailed introduction to the life of Queen Elizabeth II of England.......2005-09-08
I would like to know why Queen Elizabeth II named her oldest son Charles, which would eventually make his King Charles III. Like the names of the Popes, the names of the kings and queens of England have associations based on the previous monarchs to reign under any given name. There was never supposed to be a Queen Elizabeth II, anymore than there is ever supposed to be another Queen Victoria. But the current monarch's father was never supposed to be king, and it was not until his brother King Edward VIII abdicated to marry the woman he loved. Then the Duke of York became King George V, and Elizabeth became a princess. My understanding is that she was named for her mother, who was Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon before she became the Duchess of York and then Queen consort (and later Queen Mother). If her father had been heir to the British throne, then Elizabeth would have been named something else. Given that history, and overly conscious of what a monarch's name means, I have always been curious why Elizabeth II picked Charles given the name's association with the regicide of Charles I and the restoration of Charles II. I am sure the answer would be very interesting.
"Queen Elizabe4th II: Monarch of Our Times" begins with the queen's Coronation Day on June 2, 1953, and the fact that was a half-century ago. Then author Sara Barton-Wood goes back to birth of Elizabeth Alexandra Mary and her early life to tell the story of this famous life. Each "chapter" is a two-page spread, that usually has three paragraphs of text, two or three photographs with captions, and a pertinent quotation from somebody. Elizabeth's life before her father became king is contrasted with what happened afterwards, with an emphasis on the years of World War II. This is followed by her marriage, her father's death, and her coronation. Then the book settles down to looking at both her public duties as queen and the not particularly private life of the royal family. After her Silver Jubilee in 1977, there are sections deevoted to the Queen's love of horses, her prime ministers, the "Annus Horribilis" of 1992, and the death of Princess Diana, leading up to the Queen in the 21st century.
Consequently, young readers will get a sense of Queen Elizabeth II's life, both in terms of her biography and her duties as monarch (after all, lots of kids dream of being king or queen without having a clear conception of what it involves). The book is fully illustratd with both black & white and color photographs, including not only formal shots but the photograph of three queens waiting for the body of King George V at Westminister Hall, a rather informal formal portrait fo the family at Windsor castle in 1972, and a puppet of the Queen from "Spitting Image." The last shot is of the Queen with her mother at the Queen Mother's 100th birthday, which is a firm reminder that Prince Charles is probably not going to be on the throne anytieme oon, and that Queen Victoria's record for longest reign might be broken in 2018, which would be Queen Elizabeth II's 65th year on the throne.
Sara Barton-Wood has covered many royal stories as a reporter for national newspapers in London, which probably explains why she includes so many key details throughout the book about the queen (e.g., appearing in shows on the BBC). Barton-Wood also makes a point of covering both the good times and the bad times for her subject. There are a pair of titles in the Famous Lives series that also deal with the British monarchy, "Diana: The People's Princess" and "The Queen Mother: Grandmother of a Nation." Other volumes are devoted to a wide range of famous figures from "Muhammad Ali: The Greatest" and "Mother Tereesa: Saint of the Slums" to "Bill Gates: Computer Legend" and "Martin Luther King, Jr.: Civil Rights Hero." There is something to be said for a series that brings together Fidel Castro, Anne Frank, Nelson Mandela, and Pope John Paul II.

Customer Reviews:
This book is written for the young, but all ages will enjoy........1998-11-13
This is a delightful and charming story of Diana which begins with the Spencer family. Diana was born into an aristocratic family; however, she was thirteen years of age when she became Lady Diana.
Diana loved her father deelpy and was upset when he married Raine, his second wife in 1976. At age nine, Diana's father sent her to boarding school. On holiday from school, it was not unusual for the younger royal children, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, to visit the Spencers and use their private simming pool. In Diana's own words, "I loved being at school. I was very naughty in the sense of always wanting to muck about rather sit tight looking at the four walls of the schoolroom."
This book takes one from Diana's early years, school years, her royal romance and engagement, the fairy-tale wedding, the Shy-Di era through her various roles - working princess, motherhood, hier hidden pain and suffering, her years with the press, the breakdown of her marriage, going public with her marriage problems, her work with aids, cancer, landmines, her work with street people, her work with leprosy, and her tragic death.
Of all these many roles, Diana relished the role of Motherhood the most. She resented the time she had to be separated from her children for any length of time.
Diana's friend, Rosa Monckton, once stated in an England newspaper, "Diana had huge courage, and whenever things got too much for her she would say to herself: 'Diana, remember you're a Spencer' ( she was far prouder of this than being royal), and she would then get on with whatever she had to do." Page 35.
Each short role is told in words and accompanied by beautiful colored pictures on each. Diana had admired Mother Teresa for a long time. The last time they met was in New York City in June of l997. Diana and Mother Teresa were different, yet when they met in Calcutta, India, they shared a common love of poor and outcast people. Mother Teresa once told Diana, "To heal other people you have to suffer yourself." When Mother Teresa was told of Diana's death, she described Diana as "a very great friend who was in love with the poor." page 39.
Unfortunately, Mother Teresa died the day before Princess Diana's funeral services, and the world lost two outstanding ladies within one week.
When Diana was in Bosnia, Lord Deedes said, "One boy took off his boots to show what his feet looked like. But he didn't have any feet left. Diana picked him up in her arms. There were no photographers there. She was not showing off. It was a genuine impulse ... instinctive," P. 41
There is a glossary of terms on P. 46 to help the youngster who might not know the meanings of some terminology which is used.
A beautiful story of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, which is written in such a manner that all people can read and enjoy.
