Book Description
Written by a crusading former government official, FLYING BLIND, FLYING SAFE is the book that must be read by everyone who flies. In it is the vital airline safety information the public has a right--and a need--to know: the most dangerous planes and flying conditions; the least secure vs the best equipped airports; which carriers to avoid and why; and ways to help yourseslf increase safety.
As Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Transportation from 1990-1996, Mary Schiavo made waves, headlines, and enemies and brought about much needed change during her administration. A former assistant U.S. attorney and licensed pilot, Transportation's "top cop" became concerned early on with what she believed were holes in the aviation safety net and set out to investigate unsettling allegations of fraud, mismanagement, waste, abuse, corruption, and duplicity within the airline industry and the FAA itself. What she uncovered were deep-seated internal policies of denial and cover-up, a shocking lack of concern for public safety and a conscious acceptance of substandard work, parts, maintenance, supervision, and security procedures and practices that have been exposed by dozens of air disasters--including the tragic ValuJet crash in Florida and TWA flight 800 in New York--and which will doubtless be responsible for many more unless Schiavo's warnings are heeded.
FLYING BLIND, FLYING SAFE is your guide to safer, smarter air travel.

Nope.......2001-11-15
I read this book when it first came out. I actually spent money on it which I am mad about now. I didn't even finish it. I got about two-thirds through before I couldn't stand it anymore. She had so many things in that book that were totally false I couldn't believe it. I've been in the airline industry since '88 and had to laugh at this book. And NO I'm not bashing the book because it bashes the airlines and FAA. The FAA needs bashing I think. They have big problems. Airlines are in no way problem-free either, by any means.
The problem I had with this book was that many "facts" she had were completely false. I don't know how someone could, in good conscience, especially someone who is supposedly an authority on aviation safety, write and publish a book on airline safety with as many falsities which can be found in this book.
That's all. Except that when I see her on TV I have to change the station.
What do you think now???.......2001-09-19
I read this book when it first came out. The author received much criticism about her " biased " opinions. In the wake of the terroist hijackings due to lax security, it is safe to say that the FAA is clueless. Of couse people will say that the airlines are responsible for airline security but the FAA regulates the airlines right? How about the child who flew for 26 hours straight on several different planes before being discovered? How do these things happen. Now the airlines are in deep financial trouble due to their incompetence and are crying for the government to bail them out. Mary was right on.
Flying Blind Flying Safe-Is a Must Read for Anyone Who Flies.......2000-03-04
Mary Schiavo has done an excellent job of investigating and reporting on FRAUD and GREED and outright DANGER in the airline industry. It is a must read for any one who flies daily or steps on an airplane just once in their life. She exposes the big boys who pressure the FAA to give them approval on planes before they have been fully tested, known problems with the Valujet planes and many other Airlines. If you HAVE to fly at least take the time to find out what airlines you should use and what airlines have horrible ratings. Mary risked her life to get into print- what we need to know. I have read some of the other reviews of her book -duly noting that they couldn't even SPELL correctly, let alone write a book. They also asked to remain anonymous. I am sure by writing this book Mary hurt a lot of people in the airline industry and it has been a grave embarrassment for them. Well, sometimes industry has to be EMBARRASSED to save innocent lives! For instance the new problems involving the Alaskan airlines. If her book saves one life...we can all say...AMEN. Read the book...draw your own conclusions.I am not a friend of Marys' or involved in the airline industry, but I intend to be an educated consumer.
How to market yourself as an expert, by Mary Schiavo.......1999-12-07
This book is worthless. I don't want to say to much about it, or Mary will have suceeded in further promotion of her disreputable aviation expertise.
Suffice to say, Mary has become expert in everything, except the aviation industry.
A dangerous rag filled with biased, unsupported opinions........1999-11-18
Ms. Schiavo was touted as an expert in aeronautical safety and managed to finagle herself into a high-level position within the government overseeing the functions of a highly technical organization while possessing little to no technical qualification. After being drummed out of the Department Of Transportation for her Inquisition-like controversial practices, she slithered back into private practice and convinced an unsuspecting publisher of her expertise.
The result of her literary effort is a single-minded, agenda driven indictment of the aviation industry with little substance. Allegations of improprieties are supported only by personal opinion and innuendo. Federal overseers are portrayed as mindless oafs, uncaring civil servants or career politicians whos actions border on the criminal. The author does manage to insert some air safety tips but even these are lacking in true substance.
Ms. Schiavo tries to impress her audience as a selfless, dedicated saviour of the traveling public. Unfortunately, her book contains so many holes that the reader is left wondering not about aviation safety but the author's somewhat incredible imagination.
I'm glad I didn't actually pay for the book.

WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW WILL HURT YOU!.......2000-04-29
What you don't know will hurt you when flying old planes, and planes not serviced properly. Anyone who turns a blind eye to this information is living in the bliss of ignorance. (and probably still believes in the tooth fairy!)
You choose your cars with more caution, your tooth brushes and your lawn mowers. PLEASE MARY SCHIAVO, WRITE ANOTHER UPDATED BOOK. I fly SMARTER AND SAFER because of this book.
Consider you choose your childs bike safety helmet and car seat with caution. Please investigate the aircraft you are putting your family in on your next vacation.
Excellent reading!.......1999-09-14
I read this in two days! Interesting reading and fascinating finding out that the FAA isn't really concerned about you-only about you buying a ticket. The first 28 pages were about the ValueJet fiasco and I couldn't put it down. The facts are there and she proves a lot of her points. I can't help but think if it was written by a man, it would have received a lot more press.
Sensationalism.......1999-04-24
The book is poorly written. As an average consumer I should not be expected to wade through 400 pages to figure out how to fly safely. As far as aging aircraft I ride Washington State Ferries that are much older than even the oldest jets in service and think nothing of it. What statistics does she have to prove that a a 25-year-old plane is not as safe as a 3-year old plane. It's taken over 20 years for anyone to even talk about fixing a rudder on a 737. In talking to aerospace engineers I was advised to stay off of a new model for at least 2 years until design problems are resolved. Ms. Schiavo wastes a lot of paper talking about her life, her education and I'm not interested in that my object in reading the book was to fly safely. Perhaps she was one of the top college women but I want to know about how to fly safely. She sets herself up as the hero. Oh, if only people had listened we woulldn't have the Valujet crash In one part of the book she sees something wrong with the plane and when the airline insists it's OK Mary whips out her Inspector General ID and there she is saving the day! There is some good advice she gives, such as not flying with questionable carriers to save money and speaking up if the plane doesn't look safe. This business of no art at airports is overkill. Personally I dislike looking at art by children. Also the business of every May 11 (my birthday) handing back a can of pop to the flight attendant and putting the 30 cents towards safety. Are airlines so poor? Smokehoods? by the time I unfolded one I'd be dead. Also they can melt. Just bring a wet cloth to breathe through. I really question the chapter CULT-ure at the FAA. Is this just whining to get back at the FAA when she didn't get her way? And talk about perhaps flying isn't safer than driving. I know a lot of people who have been killed or seriously injured in auto accidents. I do not know anyone who has been in a commercial airplane accident Perhaps people in Ohio don't drive like people in Washington State so it's not as obvious to her as it is to me that flying is safer than driving. Information was organized poorly (as this review is) . She doesn't quickly get to the point. It would be better to have a 100 page book I could put in my windbreaker pocket when I go to the airport to take a flight.
One of the scariest books I have read........1999-04-18
If you fly or no someone who is going to use the airlines this is a must read book. I took it out of the local library and was so disturbed by its information that I now consider it a reference book and have added it to my library. Having 4100 hrs. in the air as a former Air Force MATS navigator and who had safety constantly drilled into me as a flight crew member, I am appalled by the accusations in this book and their implications for the flying public. This book should be a must read for every congressperson in Washington. Thank you Ms. Schaivo.
Read the facts...learn the truth, finally!.......1999-04-13
As a frequent traveler and a professional in the travel industry, this book compelled me to seriously consider whether or not I wanted to remain in the business. Perhaps most disturbing is the author's documentation of aging aircraft remaining in service and the shortcuts in maintenance as well as the government's inability to oversee the industry properly. Read this book and make informed travel decisions for the first time in your life!

Book Description
Written in the 1930s but first published in 1994, Dillinger: The Untold Story is a remarkable contemporary account of John Dillinger's life and crimes. Packed with illustrations and new information from FBI files and other sources, it is an authentic slice of American history and a feast for true crime buffs. The new paperback edition adds still more information about Dillinger and his era.
Customer Reviews:
The Real Deal on John Dillinger.......2007-07-08
In my opinion, one of the best and most underrated books written to date about John Dillinger. I picked up a copy by chance several years ago, not expecting much, and was soon totally engrossed. I feel that most of the contents are accurate (and certainly never before revealed in any published accounts I ever read) and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the Dillinger saga.
Lets remember, the guy was a criminal.......2007-05-20
The authors seem to have forgotten the basics behind Dillinger, the guy was a cold blooded killer and thief...okay granted, a colorful and charming killer and thief, but a lowlife just the same. Instead, what we seem to get a glowing reivew of Dillingers life in crime, killing innocent cops who were doing their jobs and taking hard earned cash away from people who worked long and hard to make it and save it....in the depression.
FANTASTIC!!!.......2006-03-21
My 1st "Dillinger" book and boy...it was a good one. I enjoyed the book and especially all the little extra facts etc. located in in the back.
I highly recommend!
It was all a farce.......2005-09-14
I agree with the reviewer who recommends the Nash book.
As shocking as it may seem...
that book convinced me that the Feds killed a Dillinger imposter.
The death photos clearly show a 'Dandy'... and not Dillinger.
Lawrence liked to claim he was Dillinger...
and the woman in red used that fact to get herself.. and Dillinger, off the hook.
The thing that convinced me the most...
was not anything that was pointed out in the book...
but my own observation.
Look at the photo of the old man who claims to be Dillinger.
Yes, he looks quite different...
but look at the ears.
They are uniquely shaped... and they are identical to Dillinger's.
This wasn't even pointed out in the book.
Faces age... but ears retain their shape.
Wonderfully updated, new stuff.......2005-05-14
A great updated book on the subject of John Dillinger, good fresh approach with new items.
Wonderful research from two of crime history's masters: Helmer & Mattix !
Just get it-

A fun and enjoyable cat book!.......2007-08-16
My mother in law gave this to me and I enjoyed it so much I don't even want to pass it on. It has some very poignant and funny quotes about cats as we all know who are cat lovers, so true! A very enjoyable read.
Filled with silly, charming quotes.......2003-01-19
It's a "Quote-a-day" book so it should be filled with quotes I guess. Many ring true for cat lovers, and probably cat dislikers as well, since they decribe cats we've known and loved, behaviour people have engaged in, or things we've thought about our kitties.
It's a great source of changing sig files, like "Most of us rather like our cats to have a streak of wickedness. I should not feel quite easy in the company of any cat that walked about the house with a saintly expression." ~Beverly Nichols, "If cats could talk, they wouldn't." ~ Nan Porter
A nice little book to have around to lighten the day.

Customer Reviews:
Ahhhh.......2007-08-16
I visit the book store several times a week to look at bead books, but I haven't actually bought one in months because nothing seemed to be really different or exciting. This book is different. I have been experimenting with beaded flowers using off-loom techniques for a while now, and I've had to compile patterns and techniques from various sources. This book has all of those techniques in one place so I can stop looking for projects and get back to the good stuff (beading!). I can't wait to get started playing with these gorgeous flowers.
Awesome Beading Book!.......2007-08-13
I have owned my copy of The Beaded Garden for two years, and absolutely love creating these beautiful little gems. Every flower I've made from Diane Fitzgerald's clear, concise, and easy-to-follow patterns has turned out wonderfully. I have worked with many bead patterns over the years, and find Diane's directions to be among the best laid out, clear instructions I have found. The step-by-step patterns are extremely well written and easy to follow.
Not only is there a huge variety of patterns in this book, there are ideas and encouragement to branch out (excuse the pun!) on your own. After beading a few of these delightful flowers, you will find yourself studying every flower in your garden and thinking about how to recreate them in beads. I find myself unable to pick up my bead needle for other projects because there is always another flower I want to try....or need to replace because I've given away so many from my beaded bouquet! You will be amazed with the flowers you create. They make great gifts, embellishments, and even refrigerator magnets (glue a magnet to the back of a rose!).
If you love to bead, will LOVE this book!
Inspiring and Fun!.......2007-07-08
I have been beading for many years and found this book one of the easiest and most fun to use. I wish I would have had this one when I started out. I have made all the flowers in the book and have been inspired to try a few not in the book. Her instructions are clear and easy to follow and once you learn a few techniques you can create your own fantasy flowers. I highly reccomend this book to all level of beader.

This is an amazing book filled with lots of great floral beading projects ranging from the realistic to the whimsical. I especially enjoy the awesome (and inspirational) gallery of photographs! Good book.......2005-04-01
Overall good book for beginner Phalaenopsis enthusiast eager to learn more than just the simplest basics. Gordon does a good job discussing elements of culture that help you understand how to adjust your care to your growing conditions.
This book could use an update with lots of glossy picturs. That's my way of saying that if you are looking for a book that is full of colorful pics of Phal species, this is not the book for you. This book has black & white photos.
Gordon does not discuss any specific species or hybrids. Just overall aspects of how to care for Phals. I would still recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good reference book on Phal culture.

Great training book for the orchid enthusiast.......2000-03-04
Bob Gordon is a respected name in orchid growing, with numerous articles on the subject written for the American Orchid Society 'Bulletin.' His passion is phalaenopsis orchids, and in 'Culture of the Phalaenopsis Orchid,' he begins with the basics of growing healthy plants - light, temperature, humidity, watering, fertilizers and air movement - and then he expands on information for those of us who already have plants and now want to know what it takes to grow award-quality bloomers. As an orchid lover, you'll find yourself returning to his book again and again.

Annoying.......2005-02-10
Okay I listened to the rave review that "The New Peoplemaking" got here on Amazon so I bought the book. Before I say anything bad about the book I thought that the parts dealing with past-present transference (feelings about someone you knew in the past were good (transfering that to the present with someone you think is similar) Also I thought the section on negative communication styles was very good (the author could have gone into more depth with each style instead of making them into sweeping generalizations).
However, I couldn't finish this book the exercises were way too ridiculous and moreover part about viewing the world from the eyes of a baby quite frankly made me want to gag it was so long and irrelevant. After getting past page 238 I literally could not stand reading another page.
"Ok at best" forgive me.......2004-06-06
May the last reviewer forgive me. After reading such review I felt compelled to speak up for this book. First of all, this is not a book about existential theory, so if that is what you are into, look elsewhere.
Existential theory is largerly individual. Satir on the other hand is a Family Systems theorist. I am not gifted enough to explain the difference well in a small space, but systems theories are worlds apart from individual, and perhaps especially, existential thought. What her theory is called is experiential, so maybe that was just a typo.
Anyway, I feel that saying that positioning bodies to match certain attitudes by begging on your knees was the theme of this book is a large exaggeration. That is by far not Satir's theme; it is only one chapter in a 26 or 27 chapter book. And, Satir herself claims trying those postures will probably feel ridiculous. They are simply meant to bring up exagerated feelings so we may begin to recognize when we are assuming certain roles in subtler situations in everyday life.
Her actual theme is communication, healthy and unhealthy, between family members and how it affects what goes on in the family. I would also say that her thoughts on self-esteem underly most of the rest of her thought.
Now the book is indeed long, but I do not believe in making something unduly short so it may make it in the top ten. Perhaps it would have been possible if she had wrote it in highly specialized terminology, but the grace of this book is her ability to make it simple. To do this, one has to explain what one means, and that takes space, but makes the book highly readable and friendly. I indeed agree with the reviewer who claimed if what you are looking for a quick family fix, you will waste your time looking here. Quick fixes were never known to change the world.
And folks, let us remember that this book is 16 years old. Corny, but very adorable. Still, good things last a long time. And if you must laugh at Satir, I doubt she would mind it; she herself claims in this very book we must be able to laugh at ourselves.
Just please, if you must heed some negative criticism about any book, (and this one is by no means perfect and immune to real negative criticism) just make sure it is by reviewers who have read the whole book.
Why someone who doesn't like a particular theory at the outset reads books about it I don't know. Hopefully not to feel entitlement at criticizing opposing viewpoints without even knowing the theory behind it.
OK at best.......2003-10-27
I'm not a fan of existential therapy. Satir's theme throughout this book is positioning your bodies to match a particular attitude, e.g. "placating" would look like begging on your knees. There are too many activities to do with your family that I find pretty ridiculous, including tying each other with rope to signify something or another. By the middle chapters, reading this book was a chore (I had to continue because it was assigned reading). I would not read this book again.
Long-winded but decent advice........2003-04-03
My Comments:
I don't know that giving a summary of the book is feasible, so I'll just point out a few things that I liked and didn't like. First, the book is huge, 385 pages. Admittedly what Satir has to say is important and perhaps even very beneficial to some people, but I highly doubt anyone but the seriously interested in psychological self-help will wade their way through every page of this book - even though the type is big and there are gobs of pictures. Perhaps this will sound demeaning to Americans but we (I'm American too) seem to like answers that come in small packages; this is not a small package answer. I guess what I'm saying is that she could have covered all of the information in about half the space - cutting out a lot of unneeded stuff.
Now something positive: I think the content is pretty good. Satir has simplified her message to where the educated layperson can read it and omitted all of the psycho-babble. The advice she gives really reads like common sense, but that is the subtlety of the message - it sounds just like the way that things should be (for the most part) which, to me at least, means she is probably on the right track.
There are a couple of other things about the book that I didn't particularly like. First, near the end of the book Satir starts giving advice on how to attain world peace and how to solve the world's problems. Well, she's a family therapist and not a political scientist or a sociologist - she is out of her league here. What really drives the point home (pun is intended as you will see) is that she compares everything - national governments, international societies, etc. - to families. I guess when you only have a hammer (family therapy experience), everything begins to look like a nail (solving world hunger, ending the use of war to resolve conflicts, etc.) and can be solved the same way. Satir may know quite a bit about families, but I really didn't buy her advice on solving world problems.
Satir also discusses the notion of spirituality. Now, what makes this so interesting is that she seems to think that spirituality and understanding spirituality are very important for resolving mental health and family relations issues, as a matter of fact, I believe she calls it the most important thing that people can do to get healthy. But she only spends one chapter discussing spirituality. I'm guessing that she realizes that her book will absolutely not appeal to 'a'-spiritual people if she emphasizes spirituality too much so she cut the chapter short and left it at that. Well, maybe that was a good decision.
There are three more things I'll mention briefly and then I'm done. First, the concept of a healthy family is a relative one. She makes attempts to rationalize why her conception of a 'healthy' family is the right one, but they aren't particularly convincing. But, keep in mind, her conception is likely the societal norm; the point I am trying to make is that she doesn't do a good job of arguing her perspective. This leads to her biases. She doesn't reveal them until the end, but we end up finding out that she is a pacifist and feminist in either the last or second to last chapter. In my opinion, things like that should be revealed up front. Again, keep in mind that I don't disagree with those perspectives or opinions, I just think she should have revealed her biases at the beginning of the book instead of at the end.
Lastly, she has a tendency to make broad, sweeping statements about the way things are (how families were in the late 1800s for example) and fails to cite any references to back up her claims. Sure, this is a self-help book for the layperson, but this leaves the scholar wanting for evidence for her claims.
Overall, like I said above, I think the book has good advice. Whether or not it will make a difference for people pr families, I don't know. If you have to read the whole thing to change, then probably not; it's just too long. The exercises she suggest sound interesting, but I don't have any kids and most of them are designed around kids. Those that are for couples, well, I guess I could try them, but I think my relationship with my significant other is pretty good, so I'll pass for now and if there are problems, perhaps I'll pull it back out in the future. If you really think that you would be willing to use the exercises and you are committed to reading a very long book, perhaps this will help. If you are looking for a quick fix (which is not likely to help anyway), then don't waste your time or money because it isn't until you are willing to really work to make things better that something like a self-help book like The New Peoplemaking will make a difference.

thank you! amazon.com made it easy for me to find text books without all those extra school bookstore mark ups!
the new peoplemaking is a great resource for the troubled families Satir writes about, as well as future therapists looking for some informed advice.

Book Description
A widowed first cousin, Kee; a prostitute named Sien; shy, spinsterish Margot Bergemann; the seventeen-year-old peasant girl Stien de Groot—to all of them Vincent van Gogh would declare his love. In none of them would he find the wife to seal the emotional bond that he so perfectly imagined and ardently desired. He described it, too, in his correspondence, not only in the remarkable, justly famous letters exchanged with his brother Theo, but also in heartfelt missives to his aggrieved mother, his loyal sister Wil, and his devoted sister-in-law Johanna. Focusing especially on van Gogh’s letters to these three steadfast women he called his sisters, award-winning author Derek Fell examines Vincent’s interior life and poignantly documents his emotional decline. Indeed, the blows that Vincent’s psyche suffered—like his rejection by Kee and a dramatic showdown with her father in which the devastated Vincent held his hand in a lantern’s flame—continually undermined his self-worth. In a sensitive reading and astute interpretation of van Gogh’s own written words, Fell illuminates the passions that at once commanded Vincent’s genius and tormented his heart. Many illustrations are included in this revealing life of the artist, as seen through the lens of his loves and losses.

Book Description
The collection of fifteenth-century letters printed here for the first time stands alongside the Paston and Stonor correspondence in its intrinsic interest and the light it sheds on contemporary gentry life. Edited from a recently discovered manuscript in Chetham's Library, Manchester (Mun.E.6.10 (4)), the letters deal largely with the prolonged dispute over the Brokholes inheritance in Warwickshire, Hertfordshire, and Essex, and are concerned principally with the affairs of one of the claimants, Joan Armburgh, and her husband Robert. The material mostly derives from the period c.1420-50, one of growing unease in national politics, which the letters reflect; but they are more concerned with affairs closer to home, and provide fascinating insights on local politics, the networks of `bastard feudalism' which bound the gentry to their lords and to each other, on the impact of lengthy litigation on a gentry family (especially its finances), and, more generally, on the management of their lands and business affairs. The startlingly vivid language of some of the less formal entries brings the writers strikingly to life.Dr CHRISTINE CARPENTERis a Fellow of New Hall, and Reader in Medieval English History at Cambridge University.
