Book Description
Originally publisher in 1948, this is the seminal text on nearly 250 species of sping wild flowers found in West Virginia. Common or English names and scientific or Latin names are given for each species. The descriptions are in two sections: the first description includes the meaning of the name of the flower, uses, habitats, and ranges in West Virginia. Secondly, the plant itself is described in deep detail to help in identification. Each description is accompanied by a facing page detailed line drawing. This book is a must have for those interested in the beauty and science of West Virginia's spring flora.

A "Must Read" Before You Go.......2005-01-14
A trip to Alaska is something people wait a lifetime to take. So, when you do, read anything and everything you can. We took our parents for their 50th anniversary and bought this book for them to research and review before going. They said it was a very informative and gave them great recommendations as to which tours being sold by our cruise ship would be the best!
Exploring Alaska on a budget, this book is for you!.......2002-02-17
This book contains a great list of places to stay and eat with prices. Some of my favorite sections of book include the following: Listing of Best Unspoiled Small Towns, which include Kodiak, Petersburg, and Cordova; Listing of Strange Comunity Events which include Cordova's Ice Worm Festival, Fairbanks' Midnight Sun Baseball Game nad Nomes Polar Bear Swim/Bathtub Race. If you are going to Alaska's number one destination, Denali National Park, make sure you pick up a copy of Discovering Denali.

Book Description
Despite humble beginnings in East London, Cameron White rapidly rose in the London club scene. After his initial spectacular success as a drug dealer, he ran afoul of notorious London criminals the Doherty brothers and was forced to flee to North America. There he climbed aboard a cocaine-fueled roller coaster that carried him from dealing with psychotic crack-dealing Jamaican gangsters in New York to West Coast power meetings for a Hollywood talent agency. Returning to London, White managed to stay clean for a while, but a chemical vacation in Thailand set him back on the path to self-destruction, as he smoked marijuana with dope smugglers, sampled the new wave of super-amphetamines, and returned to London a heroin addict and cohort of the murderous Triad gangs. How he navigated the demimonde of drugs and crime makes Mr. Nasty both a riveting read and powerful cautionary tale.
Customer Reviews:
Mr Nasty is a nice read... very nice!.......2007-04-30
While Cameron White may not be a nasty person as the title implies, he has definately seen his share of nasty situations and nasty people.
With an easily accessible writing style, Cameron White takes the reader on a very frank, exciting and realistic foray into the world and lifespan of a student turned entreprenuar.
The protagonist is a very likable guy, and anyone who has seen the periphery of society can relate to his experiences that at times can be linkened to walking on egg shells resting on razor blades.
Using a series of locations as different as his experiences, from London to LA to Berlin to Thailand to Sydney, Cameron shows that we can outrun our problems but we can't outrun ourselves.
Mr Nasty is an excellent read, especially for those who like to flirt with danger and can relate to the experience of buying drugs.
Puffed Up Memoirs of a Nobody Who Thought He Was A Player.......2005-04-01
This is a terrible book. The author appears to believe that he has had uncommon experiences and possesses esoteric knowledge about drugs and the criminal underworld, however he reveals himself to be a very naive and gullible nobody. The one saving grace of this book is that it is frequently hilarious to read. The author makes pronouncements he believes to constitute hard-earned wisdom and trade secrets when in fact he hasn't the slightest idea of what he speaks....
Can't imagine how this one found a publisher....the kid down the block probably had more status as a criminal than "Mr. Nasty"....

A-Z of Tropical Fish Diseases and Health Problems
ASIN: 0764562355 |
Book Description
Fish keeping is a rapidly expanding hobby. One in ten U.S. households now has an aquarium. Tropical fish, however, are notoriously difficult to take care of. This guide offers essential advice on choosing and using the best materials and equipment. Specially commissioned photographs demonstrate every stage involved in setting up a fully working system so that you can keep your tropical fish healthy and attractive for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
Best fish book in my library.......2002-12-10
Sandford takes an unusual approach to educating current and potential aquarists about the hobby. Rather than the standard "buy this" and "do that", she begins by showing us where pet store fish come from in the wild, then moves on to how they are shaped, what they eat, how they breed, and what all this means about how to determine and meet their needs in captivity. Sandford is an excellent writer who manages to balance scientific terminology with common language and her text is beautifully illustrated with drawings and photographs. I would not hesitate to recommend the book to anyone who has the most passing interest in tropical fish. As a well-established aquarium hobbyist, I learned enough to be reading it again a year later, plus I found that short exposures to specific topics increased my spouse's rather slim interest in my pets. This book would make an excellent starting point for a parent or young person considering a first tank. I would recommend it for the classroom or home schooler as well. It is extraordinarily well done and, at the low price, a real bargain as well.
Book Description
Here's everything the do-it-yourselfer needs to set up, and operate a handy-man's machine shop. Areas covered range from shop requirements and proper lighting to buying, using, and storing tools.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-04-07
This Book it's a good start for somebody that is beginning in the world of machinist it's clear and an easy guide to somebody that give it's first step in machinist world and also a practice guidance for experience one's.
Loaded with good info for the money........2007-04-03
I have never used a metal lathe or mill, but I am trying to decide if I should get a small one. I am a woodworker, with a decent woodworking shop, so I'm fairly good at mechanical things. As stated early in the book, it isn't for machine shops or starting a business. It is for Home Machinists. There is good information and introductions about what the various machines and tools are, how you use them, and what types of things they can do. Good discussion on metals, as well as tempering, etc.
While I am still not sure if I am going to make the jump to getting machine tools, I certainly think the knowledge gained was worth the purchase price.
Info for Home and apprentice machinists.......2006-06-03
Outstanding starting place for machinists with many helpful hints on setups and techniques.
A Bit Dated But Still Relevant.......2005-10-02
If you are just playing with the idea of starting your own garage machine shop or if you are an absolute beginner this text gives you a brief overview and it does it very well. Considering the advances in design and manufacturing technologies it does show its age. A 2nd edition would help a lot that includes CAD/CAM, CNC, and other subjects found in most hobby machine shops today.
What I liked:
The basic never change and this book gives you a good overview.
No unnecessary "This can kill you" side notes.
Cool project at the end of the book.
What I did not like:
Reference material could be better organized and expanded.
It's a bit dated and only talks about the absolute basics.
Too many BIG pictures.
Limited coverage of the metric system (and yes, we are using it today).
Home Machinists Handbook.......2005-09-04
It is a very helpful book for someone who has not used a lathe since highschool (1960's). I would recommend it for anyone as a good review of practices, or for a mechanically inclined person who needs firt time instructions.

Book Description
Thought-provoking questions that challenge and inspire couples to build a lasting, intimate relationship.
When Susan Piver's husband, Duncan, proposed, her first impulse was to break up with him. "How does one enter into marriage knowing that almost half of all couples these days get divorced?" she thought in a panic. "Suppose he wants to live somewhere I hate? What if I wish we had ten times more money than he wishes for, or he wants to spend more time with his family than I do?"
One by one, she and Duncan answered these questions and many more, alternately delighted, appalled, infuriated, and mystified by the other's responses. In exploring each area of uncertainty, Piver learned something about her husband-to-be, herself, and their relationship. Focusing on key areas of married life, such as home, money, work, sex, community and friends, family, and spirituality, her list of questions became the basis for this book.
The Hard Questions should be required reading for engaged couples, newlyweds, and those in long-term relationships. It is a simple yet profound tool that will challenge and inspire couples to gain a deeper understanding of each other and build a lasting, intimate relationship.
"This book of hard questions and exercises for couples is innovative and exciting." --Andrew Weil, M.D.
"Susan Piver is a deeply intuitive and innovative thinker. She has both tenderness and acuity regarding what concerns us. I could not recommend her more highly." --Julia Cameron
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-06-26
I have read many of the comments and I would disagree with those that 'say' this is not a 'good book'. This is probably one of the best 'pre-marriage' books because the average couple has not discussed every topic in this book i.e. 'Where will you spend your holidays?". Believe it or not, this has spoiled many a new couple's marital bliss and they appear as deers in the headlight behind the question.
For those that think it was a waste of time, then pass the book on to your friends who did not have as much knowledge about getting to know someone, especially those that spent their courtship in bed vs getting to really know their potential spouse!
What a waste of time!.......2007-04-10
I picked up this book from the library for my fiance and I to read together, and it was extremely disappointing. I totally agree with other reviewers who write that the questions included in the book are not as stimulating as the author thinks them to be.
The questions in this book are things that, really, should have come up in conversation by now if you are in any kind of serious adult relationship. Plus, they are too specific and not open-ended enough to truly stimulate any kind of conversation. Most of the questions can be answered with a single-word answer. The relatively open-ended questions are usually follwed by numerous suggestions by the author. ("What surrounds the house? Neighbors? Trees? Shopes and museums? The ocean? A gated community? Acres of underdeveloped land?") It's as if the author is instructing an activity for a group of kindergarteners, as if she doesn't trust us to come up with any good ideas of our own.
Speaking of the author, she introduces each chapter (though they are very self-explanatory) with a lengthy explanatory section that is over-the-top spiritualized and poeticized. It's really annoying.
Really, it's just not a good book!
From a Wedding Consultant.......2007-04-06
As a wedding consultant, I like to give this book to couples as I first meet with them. Most of them are surprised at the gift, but this is a great book for making sure that the couple has discussed some of the things that are going to come up in their marriage.
I like how the book brings up questions that the couple might not have thought about or thought through. The questions are an easy way to open discussions without finger-pointing.
After all. . . the wedding is a day, the marriage is a lifetime.
The Hard Questions: 100 Essential Questions to Ask Before You Say "I Do".......2007-01-09
Great book!
Worst relationship book ever.......2006-08-11
I agree with the last reviewer, the questions in this book are ones that maybe you would ask someone in the first month or so of dating but after that if you have any type of conversation skills you would have already found out the answers to 99% of the questions. Don't waste your money.

"The world will admire me. Perhaps I'll be despised and misunderstood, but I'll be a great genius, I'm certain of it."
At 16, Salvador Dali had already developed the remarkable ego and uncanny perception that would distinguish him as one of the most notorious artists of the 20th century. A self-proclaimed surrealist, an avant-garde exhibitionist, and a criticized commercialist with questionable political affiliations, Dali was anything but benign. Biographer Ian Gibson (Federico Garcia Lorca) argues that the modern master was motivated primarily by the very last thing anyone would suspect him of: a very deep sense of shame. Via the artist's correspondence, diary, and autobiography (The Secret Life of Salvador Dali), Gibson meticulously stitches together the wild characters and deep-dish details of Dali's life: a guilt-ridden childhood, feelings of sexual inadequacy ("...I discovered that my penis was small, pitiful and soft"), his love affairs with Lorca and sex-pot Gala and the real passion of his life, surrealism. Critical, fair, and lively, The Shameful Life of Salvador Dali digs beyond the escapades and outlandish façade to expose the very personal and vulnerable side of one of the world's most eccentric performers.
Book Description
The most thorough and ambitious biography of Salvador Dali ever written, a remarkable evocation of the outlandish personality, paranoia, and sexual torment lurking behind the nightmarish images that shook the world. Drawing on extensive original research and recently discovered sources, Ian Gibson presents a daringly original portrait of one of this century's most celebrated--and infamous--artists. He provides a full narrative of Dali's life as artist and as uninhibited exhibitionist, from his wild and troubled youth through his often rollickingly funny adventures in Paris, New York, and Hollywood to his poignant last years. Here is Dali fully revealed through his voluminous correspondence; his novel, poems, and essays; and interviews with some of those closest to him. The Shameful Life of Salvador Dali reexamines the roles of the two most important individuals in the artist's life: the Spanish playwright and author Federico Garca Lorca and the enigmatic, libidinous Gala, the Russian migr whose marriage Dali broke up and with whom he subsequently lived in unconsummated bliss and terror. This is a truly incandescent life of the surrealist artist who caught the imagination of the twentieth century. This enthralling narrative is augmented by a full discussion of Dali's most important works, with black-and-white illustrations of Dali's life and paintings reproduced at appropriate points in the text and more than thirty full-color reproductions.
Customer Reviews:
The best bio in English of a true genius.......2006-01-26
Ian Gibson has written a very well researched biography of one of the most enigmatic artists the world has given birth to: Salvador Dali Domenech. Gibson tries to give a rather impartial portrayal of this man, hated by some, adored by others but considered to be a genious by all.
Sexually traumatized, insecure, extremely shy but at the same time self-centered, egocentric, excentric, exibitionist, superfitial, communist, anarachist, monarchist, conceited, a traitor to his own friends and ideals... A long etc wouldn't be enough to define who Dali really was.
He lived in a fascinating era where he met fascinating people such as: Andre Breton, luis Bunuel, Garcia Lorca, Lawrence Olivier, Coco Chanel, Picasso,Christian Dior, Helena Rubinstein etc. Dali played a vital part in popular culture both in Europe and America. However, he was also considered to be a "sell out" by many, specially after the 1940's. As he grew old he became more and more excentric, his paintings being more and more shocking.A greedy person, he sorrounded himself by a court of "grand grotesques" (Notably transexual Amanda Lear) to Finally succomb to neumonia in the late 1980's
Love him or hate him, but Dali is and was a unique personality without comparison.
I've Never Read A More Vivid Biography.......2000-01-06
Most biographies I've read, the opening chapters are a bore of mundane details of the person's childhood that are uninterestnig and nearly always read the same. In contrast, Ian Gibson's writing style is so lush, that even the detailed history of the Dali family before Salvador was born are compelling. Gibson gives you the feel of the Spanish countryside and the era in which Dali and his forefathers lived. Gibson is a careful biographer as well. Instead of taking Dali's own autobiography, "The Secret Life Of Salvador Dali," at face value, Gibson researches Dali's life and points out discrepencies and exaggerations of Dali writings. It led me to reread Dali's own writings and gave me further insight into the mind of the artist. I enjoyed reading about Dali's relationships with other painters (Surreal and otherwise), writers and poets such as Lorca, and his love of jazz. Far from a dry outline of a famous person's life, this book makes Dali come alive.
Like Dali's art, this bio takes effort but it's worth it.......1999-12-08
If you want to be spoon fed Freudian explanations about what Dali's paintings mean, look for something else. But if you want a richly detailed, absolutely readable biography of Dali, this is it. I can't wait to read Gibson's biography of Lorca, but for now, I'm savoring this one and I only wish it were longer.
Unflatering Portrait of a Neurotic Genius.......1999-12-07
Well researched revisionist biography of one of the century's great artists. As the title implies, the author suggests that a key to understanding Dali is his feelings of shame. Dali suffered from almost paralizing bouts of shame as a child, and struggled (not always successfully) to work around or overcompensate for them. Those with a casual interest in Dali should start off with the artist's own "The Secret Life of Salvador Dali" for many insights and a more entertaining read. The "Shamefull Life" tries to find the story behind the story. My biggest objection to this book is Gibson's almost total dismissal of Dali's art after 1940, which I fear is a prejudice based more on politics than the Dali's art itself.
More than adequate chronicle; but a snooze of a storybook.......1999-09-05
If you are looking for a complete documentary of Dali, here it is. Use it for school papers. But if you are looking for an enjoyable read of the life and times of Salvador Dali, that has yet to be written.
Gibson methodically lists each period of Dali's life in as much detail as is probably possible in anything shorter than an archive. Although the author's thorough research is commendable-- certainly he has done a service to art history-- this dedication often drowns the reader without revealing much passion. And if you didn't comprehend Dali's perversions and the psychoanalytical content of his works before reading this tome, you won't after, either.
