Many good "how to's", BUT.......2003-05-05

David Hampshire gave much helpful guidance regarding the rules, regulations and bureaucracy in France (although "Frommer's" and "Lonely Planet" books do as well). However, his clear dislike for most things French (especially the people) made the book read more like a prejudiced, bigoted, diatribe. A bit of fun-poking would have certainly been acceptable and lightened a bare facts book, but Mr. Hampshire went on for, literally, pages and at every opportunity to criticize and ridicule. One wonders, if he were corect in his assessments, how a country so filled with stupid, unwashed, crude and lazy people could possibly be responsible for the creation and ongoing care of some of the world's greatest works of artistic expression. Shame on you Mr. Hampshire. Perhaps in your next revision, you'll omit the vitriolic rhetoric. It will be a much better book.

Best of the bunch.......2000-07-05

I have read two other books in this catagory, "Living, Studying, and working in France", and "Live and Work in France" and this is the best of the three. The "Live and Work..." book is the worst. It is mainly aimed at UK residents moving to France. The "Living, Studying..." book is pretty good too, but doesn't have the concentration of good info as this book. Lots of contacts info for jobs, paperwork, etc. Very thorough. The one thing I wish it had was more about the internet access and contacts for that.

I am going to live in France in September and I recently read this book. It is invaluable and I can see I am going to be referring to it constantly come September. It's just what I needed! Everything I wanted to know and even things I didn't know I wanted to know but was glad I discovered!

I had the great pleasure of meeting Wayne Carlson on a cross-Canada music festival train trip in April 2004. Many of us on the train bought Wayne's book, and I read it with interest and pleasure. Doing so increased my astonishment that anyone could spend as much of a life in such lousy circumstances and emerge with humanity and humor intact. His narrative proves that he has. In an age when, certainly in the U.S., and probably to some extent in Canada as well, any pretense that the criminal justice system is intended to rehabilitate anyone is nothing but pretense, Wayne's story indicates that rehabilitation is possible. Great compelling read.

Intelligent, insightful, engaging memoir.......2001-11-20

Every few months or so I need to read a book or at least an essay such as this account of man surviving the, for most, unsurvivable. Papillon is one such story I would compare to Carlson's, the indomitability of an undefeatable man. That must be redundant, but I'm a bit bleary because I haven't been able to put the book down.

What makes Carlson so winsome, beyond his genius for survival and escape, is his essential romantic innocence and affection for humanity. Despite his decades of imprisonment he seems to have maintained his human spirit, truly a miracle!

A wealth of observational detail on life, friendship and survival. One hopes he does a sequel.

If you are interested in learning how our forefathers lived without the modern day conveniences that we enjoy today, this book is a must read. You will learn how they survived without much income and you could learn something beneficial that you never knew.

PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST IN THIS GENRE.......2007-03-26

The Foxfire books are a wonderful thing and we are so lucky to have them. Many of the ways, crafts, planting lore, animal lore, and as the book says "affairs of plain living" are preserved here. This particular volume includes different wood and it's uses, Mountain Recipes, Slaughtering Hogs, weather signs faith healing and so very, very much more. this is a wonderful recording of life the way it was and probably never will be again. The book is quite well written and has faithfully recorded even the dialect of these wonderful people, from which so many of us sprung. That is a big part of the charm of these works. This book includes actual interviews with folks from that region of the country which I am sure are long dead now. Their knowledge would be completely lost without works such as this. Another generation or two and it will all be completely gone. Thank goodness we have recordings such as this. Recommend this one highly.

I heard about this book and thought, "OH I'm from the South and this book will be lovely to read to find out about how things used to be." And I would probably have been right if I could have made out what they were talking about. The slang is much too thick for me. I'm not sure anyone could understand it except people who actually are from this region. Thumbs down for no translation.

Don't get me wrong the entire series is amazing. Book one is the best and one of the more practical. The chapter on log cabin building was my inspiration to build my own cabin. At least 75% of the cabin was directions from this very book. Reading a Foxfire (any of them) does something to you that's hard to explain. I think of Foxfire books as almost a self-help guide that teaches you how to slow down for a minute. I recommend this book for anybody with high blood pressure or some kind of anxiety problem. It's therapeutic. These students met some really neat people of Appalachia. We can't let this way of life fade away as it almost has in my hometown, Knoxville.

I've inherited the first seven, origional print books from my dad, and bought 8 and 9 for myself just a year ago, and I must say that I've always enjoyed reading these books. The people who contributed their knowledge & wisdom to these books are a resource that has largely been lost to us, and it's a shame that more of us don't realize the wisdom that is missing in this world with the deaths of these oldtimers (as the books were written in the 70's primarily).

I rate this book right up there with Carla Emery's books, as a great resource for folks trying to get back to a more self-sufficient way of life and providing for themselves, their families, and even friends & neighbours. These books definitely give a sense of old-fashioned camaraderie and willingness to help your neighbour in time of need (and in times of plenty).

Interesting Subject and Approach.......2005-01-05

This book was recommended to me because I was impressed with Ackoff's "The Art of Problem Solving." Enduring all 300 pages of this poorly written, repetitious work is proof that just because the subject matter is interesting, any given coverage of it will not necessarily be so. The book does have some merit and a few original ideas. That's part of the reason it has endured. The other reason is that the author, being so prolific, has kept himself current. Last but not least, the field of "creativity in thought" has so few good, logical authors with descriptive talent.

"Do not limit your mind, don't assume" could be a brief summary of the book. The author has made quite a good start, explanining how new ideas could be formed and how the best looking idea may not be the best to pick up. The book would be useful for people who have been in a stable environment, a place where improvements are seen as threats so you couldn't improve most of the things. The negative side was, that there were to many repeats of the same idea through out the chapter and the book. That was a bit boring. The "PO" word is a good idea, but doesn't need that much explanation. I would recommend it for starters in continuous improvement concept.

One of the two books I'll be using .......2007-09-14

I read four books of Greek myths to determine which to use for my 7-year-olds. I will use this and the d'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths. I like that this book has the pronuciation of the names right in the story (I hate flipping to the end of the book). Most of the stories are between 5 and 10 minutes long so you can read one to three a day fairly easily. This book does not contain any pictures - it is merely to be used for reading aloud.

The author did a wonderful job telling these stories to a younger audience. The language is rich and full and not dumbed down. He also doesn't go into inappropriate detail.

He tells the story of the Iliad and the Odyssey. I didn't want to go into that this year- I'll wait until they're a bit older - so we used the Trojan Horse by Emily Little. While he does a great job, I'll be using Rosemary Sutcliff's books when they're older (Black Ships Before Troy and The Wanderings of Odysseus), so for me, about a third of the book wasn't necessary.

I love all these classic stories but I dont think they keep a small child's attention. The book says five and up and I have a six year old who is very advanced in reading but she didnt know what a lot of the words mean. I had to pretty much retell the stories in my own words to get her into the story. Also she is visual and the book has no pictures. I do think she will love it when she's older though.

An Excellent Book!.......2006-03-09

I homeschool my seventh grade son, and this book is an excellent tool, not only for mythology but language as well. Each chapter begins and ends with a discussion about the topic at hand, and words that are used in the English language today are explained as to how they come from Greek roots. We have been able to build vocabulary, geography and general knowledge. Also included are pronunuciations to difficult words which is very helpful. Many stories could be used for much younger students and they also can be used through high school. There are not graphic explanations or explicit use of violence which make it quite family-friendly, while still being educational and interesting to everyone from age 5 to adult. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Greco-Roman mythology or homeschooling.

my daughters are still a little young for this, but I'm looking forward to start reading it to them. I started to read it, but the attention span wasn't there without pictures for every paragragh (10 months and 22 months).

A must to read at bed time for your kids.......2004-12-25

Everyone should read this book to their children. It educates and is great story telling. I have two boys, a 10, and a 12 year old. I never see them more in trance, like when they watch TV, than when I am reading aloud a story from this book. The book is written to read aloud. Each story is just short enough for one sitting. It's amazing how you can get so much in a short number of pages for a single story. Each story provides a nice introduction just before the start and a summary of how the story relates words used today. The only thing wrong is I need a follow-up.

The personal and professional history of van Gogh and Gauguin—their rivalrous friendship and brief period of collaboration in Arles in 1888—constitutes one of the most dramatically revealing sagas in the history of modern art. In many ways, it is the quintessential story about the beginnings of modern avant-garde practice as it developed in the wake of the last Impressionist exhibition, held in 1886. Gauguin and van Gogh were, by circumstances of personality and history, "isolés": at once inherently self-involved and faced, in the absence of a single dominant "school," with a dizzying array of contemporary art-making. Brought together by circumstance, each artist played a vital role in the other's search for a personal style that would relate to current developments yet be unique. Over the course of this century, van Gogh and Gauguin have received a prodigious amount of scholarly attention. Recent contributions to this literature—including new biographies, studies of particular aspects of their art, and publication of their letters—have expanded our knowledge significantly. But while references to their problematic interaction abound, sustained analysis of their mutual influence has yet to be the subject of a major study. This book, published on the occasion of a landmark exhibition organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, systematically explores the relationship in the context of the larger cultural and political background implied in their ideas for a "Studio of the South." It charts the connections between the two men through their stay together in Provence and beyond to Vincent's death in 1890. "Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South" is a great and rare achievement, since it captures the atmosphere of artists lives as no other book or film has done in the past, being magnificently precise in details and facts, yet sensitive to the personal aesthetic visions of Van Gogh and Gauguin. Armed with wonderful maps, charts, photographs and documents the authors explore the "geography" of artistic process and communication between two men. I kept going to the exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, and back to consult the book: they acted as an artwork in time and space, yet an object on the table - all at once. This book has finally answered lots of questions, and most importantly - it has made two artists and their visions closer to us as never before.
