This is the story of Elmer McCurdy, a failed plumber from Bangor, Maine, who went west to become an even less successful bad guy. He arrived in Oklahoma a few decades after the golden age of the outlaw and attempted to resurrect the lost art of train robbing, but his criminal skills were so deficient that he bungled every robbery he attempted. His contemporaries were amused by the incompetent throwback, but when McCurdy was shot dead in 1911 by a posse of deputy marshals, popular sentiment suddenly drafted him into the glorified criminal league. Able to recognize a fetish in the making, two men from a passing carnival hoodwinked a sheriff and claimed McCurdy's corpse. Thus began a post-mortem career in show business that lasted until 1976, when McCurdy's body was discovered in a California amusement ride. Mark Svenvold has reconstructed the bizarre itinerary of the corpse, its many years on the sideshow circuit and its second career as a cautionary prop in morality movies like I Changed My Sex. By exploring the underside of American entertainment and by following how McCurdy was presented to the public after his death, Svenvold also shows how our culture's deepest obsessions have changed over the course of a century. A lively and engaging chronicle of a man who was as hapless in death as he was in life, Elmer McCurdy is a narrative of our collective affinity for nostalgia, celebrity, the wonderful, the abnormal and the outrageous.

A Weird & Truly American Story.......2005-07-29

I was given this book as a gift for my birthday by a friend of mine who said that it was one of the weirdest books that he has ever read. He was right. The story of Elmer McCurdy is definitely a weird and truly American one. This should make a great Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie, although it would be difficult to pull off the task of having the main character be a corpse for 70%-75% of the movie. Reading about how poor Elmer failed in his crimes made me LOL as the 21st Century cliche goes and reading about his strange afterlife and how he was exploited by generations of hucksters was interesting to say the least. Even though Elmer (or his corpse) had a minor part, it was facinating to read about the Bunion Derby, the only cross-country foot race. All in all, a very good read.

Truth is stranger than fiction! !.......2003-10-13

What a crazy mixed up pile of stuff! I like Westerns,Ripley's Believe it or Not!,truth is stranger than fiction stuff,unusual characters,history,oddities,greatly miss the old freak shows that travelled with the carnivals,real life outlaws,and you name it.History is full of this stuff and to me much more fun to delve into than fiction.While the author didn't seem to come up with too much on old Elmer;probably because his short and non-illustrious produced very little;he sure found enough to spin around what he did have to create a good interresting read.I believe the period after the Civil War until the start of the 2WW produced some of the most interresting characters and times in American history.That was all before the do gooders, politically correct,boring and otherwise anal-retentive got everything under control.But then again, they probably prefer reading about some corporate business scam to the gangster days of Capone and all. Since this was the first thing I've read by the author I'll be looking to find something else from him.From what he did with this story I am sure he'll be giving us some more good stuff in the future.

Outlaw Poetry.......2003-10-02

It's not often that one sees a biography written in such a literate, even poetic manner. Mr. Svenvold has taken the tale of the hapless outlaw, Elmer McCurdy, in a new and interesting direction: rather than reporting his life and times (and ignominious post-mortem "career") in a cut-and-dried manner, Mr. Svenvold has woven an incisive, at times deadpan-hilarious commentary on the fading Wild West, the rise of sideshows and exploitation flicks, theme tourism and other illustrations of just how low the entertainment taste of the American public can go. Notwithstanding Mr. Svenvold's concerns that he was just another in the long line of the day-glow corpse's "exploiters," he has written the equivalent of a decent burial for poor dead Elmer. Highly recommended.

Entertaining, but..........2003-06-29

Svenvold's book adds little, if anything, to the body of facts surrounding McCurdy's brief criminal career, and his much-longer postmortem career as a sideshow attraction. Early on in the book, the writer admits this.
Nevertheless, it is entertaining reading, as Svenvold retraces McCurdy's pre- and post-mortem travels in the manner of a New Journalist.
His reportage about the world of the carny and sideshow makes the book worth reading, but if you are seeking anything NEW about McCurdy, this is not the place to find it. Some readers may find Svenvold's writing a bit too self-conscious, and indeed there are passages in which it appears that Mark Svenvold, not Elmer McCurdy, is the subject of the book.
Buy it anyway.

The author does not have enough expertise typically required to publish this type of writing material. The information presented here is very unprofessional, and a waste of tree paper, as said previously by others. The author does not hesitate to document the information on the page, but should have made another attempt.

The best manual on parenting.......2007-04-18

I picked up this book before having our first child thinking I would get some insights into how to raise our daughter. What I found was that the book was really for me. Through it, I learned about how I have some of the same needs as children--needs like recognition, feeling valued, loved for who I am, unconditionally.

What's more,it helped me understand better what my needs really are and how to get them met by myself and from others who love me. Most importantly I learned that in order to parent my daugther the I way I want her to grow up, I needed to parent myself and make sure my actions are congruent with my what I want for her. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to create a solid, loving, nurturing environment for themselves and their children.

This book is meant for those that need help to see what they are missing in their life and how that relates to how they parent. I like how they have redone the entire book and still kept the same excellent content. This a workbook type study manuel and it is worth getting. So many parents didn't have superior parenting and this helps fill in the gaps without making the parent feel worthless or stupid.

I love this book because of the way it teaches parents how to interact with children of all ages. You do not need to be a parent to benefit from this book. As grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends, we all come in contact with children. I did not have this book when I first became a parent but it is never to late to use this information no matter how old you or your children are. I have given this book to new parents as a gift.

The book zoned in on what I had missed emotionally in my youth. I was able to put a finger on the fact that my life's foundation was based on denial and discounting, a topic that the book touched on a lot.

The chapter on "Ages and Stages" is definitely an eye opener and you can relate a lot of experiences from it.

The heartfelt work of a philosopher-artist.......2000-08-27

Few people who have encountered a dozen of so drawings and captions by Richard Stine are likely to have forgotten them, but if their acquaintance with his work has gone no further, as mine had not before serendipitously coming upon this volume, I doubt whether they will have divined the zealous urgency that informs it. For Stine is a philosopher as much as an artist -- a sort of folk philosopher who prides himself on his naiveté. He is a true romantic, whose work comes straight from the heart. The heart, indeed, figures in many of his works and is his ultimate touchstone of value -- in fact, Stone believes that the heart in each of us possesses a deep connection with the entire universe: "...our universe is one. Deep down everyone knows everything lives and breathes in the same being. The mind will protest, but never the heart. The heart always says, 'Together, we are all together.' Thought and heart provoking..........2007-09-27

This book is a gloriously naked celebration of Spirituality and Love as the breath of daily life. It weaves poetry, prayer, prose and photographs into a tapestry that can appear like finest silk from one direction, and the roughest homespun from another. There is an uneven quality to the poetry that annoyed me at first because it didn't fit with the expectations I created based on the lovely feel and visual appeal of the book. Reading and pondering a bit more, I realized that the seeming incongruity between the words and the visual impact of the book were similar to my own state-of-self when engaging a new experience. The exterior is poised, polished, visually appealing. The interior is raw, sometimes rumpled and sometimes radiant. The book was simply reflecting my own reality so clearly that I nearly missed it.

The author, Meg Coyle, greets readers in the beginning of the book by saying, "I will leave it to you to follow whatever movement brought this book into your hands and invite you to let it into your heart. It was written from mine, hoping to find yours." Moving through my annoyance that my (completely unrealistic!) expectations weren't being met, I found the opportunity to witness a woman's heart opening to me in a genuine gesture of generosity and compassion. What will you find? In the author's words, "The invitation has been issued to each of us to cross the line we have drawn in our lives between what we think we know, and move at last, into the larger wisdom that is always calling us."

Marguerite Duras's writing is analogous to the surrealist endeavor, though her work is rarely compared to surrealist principles. This study proposes a detailed analysis of Duras's relationship to the male-dominated literary domain of Surrealism, founded in France in 1924 by André Breton. Such an approach allows a greater understanding of her work and broadens the realm of surrealist aesthetics to include the female experience. With Duras's final text C'est tout in mind, this book suggests a reevaluation of the Durassian corpus based on a comparison of the ultimate silence of her texts to the surrealist ideal of the marvelous. Felicity loses a King family heirloom and the world ends..........2002-04-30

"Vows of Silence" will remind older readers of an episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" where Laura was supposed to wear a Petrie family heirloom: a gaudy broach of the United States with gems representing where various family members were born. Only less worse is the comb of Great-Grandmama King, awarded in honor of her helping to fight the Yankees at the Battle of Fort George. Hetty, Olivia and even Alec all insist that Janet should have the honor of wearing the thing in public, a honor that she would just as well do without. Just to make things more interesting Felicity, who is trying to act grown up, "borrows" the comb to wear to the first (and last) meeting of the Avonlea Young Women's Colloquium for Social Betterment (Topic #1: "The French Bob--Could it happen her?"). Trying to throttle her brother Felix for his many grievous sings, the comb is lost. Meanwhile, Janet is being pressure by the collective Kings to wear the comb in public.

In a subplot, Avonlea welcome a new minister, the Reverend Hugh Fitzsimmons, who believes in bellowing his sermons at the top of his lungs. But when his Sunday sermon preaches how the fires of hell await miserable sinners at the end of the world, a guilt ridden Felicity becomes convinced that the end of the world is nigh and that her balance sheet is tipping the wrong way. Of course, the two plot lines collide with great comic results, thanks to the mischevious involvement of Peg Bowen, the Witch of Avonlea. Gail Hamilton, who wrote the original teleplay for the "Avonlea" series, writes this "Road to Avonlea" novelization as well. "Vows of Silence" is a fun adventure for Avonlea gang, although I must admit that I cannot understand why Alec wants his wife to wear that hideous heirloom.

This is a great story with a good moral lesson........1998-10-20

This story is one that we can all relate to. How many times have you done something wrong and "put off" admitting it to your parents? That's exactly what Felicity does when she loses the King heirloom comb. The plot twists around the fact that both Felicity and her mother think that they lost the comb, but neither wants to admit it. The final twist at the end is both surprising and amusing, and both mother and daughter learn their lesson.
