Book Description
For this updated edition of the classic Parkway trail guide, Leonard Adkins has rehiked many of the trails, reworked the descriptions of their physical features, added new trails, and deleted trails that have closed. The book includes hikes for every skill and interest level, from five-minute "leg-stretchers" to overnight hikes. In addition to trail length and difficulty, Adkins notes points of interest and natural features to be found along each trail.

Best hiking guide to the parkway.......2004-07-27
My wife and I have just come home from a 3 week trip along the entire parkway. We started the trip with Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway, but ended up buying Walking the Blue Ridge at one of the visitor centers. While Hiking was ok, we found Walking the Blue Ridge to be the better of the two. It was very easy to use, easy to find information, and full of wonderful tidbits. The way the mileage data was set up in a vertical way made it very easy to use while we were hiking the trails, simple to always know where we were. In the Hiking book we had to wade through a lot paragraphs just to match up the descriptions with where we actually were on the trail. Also, it was obvious that the author of Walking the Blue Ridge had actually walked every one of the trails he was writing about. It was also nice knowing that it gave descriptions of every one of the trails along the parkway, even if it was just a short pathway; the other book neglected some that we found to be truly delightful. In addition, its smaller weight and size made it much easier to carry while on the hikes.
All in all, we were happy to have found Walking the Blue Ridge and will be using it often.
Get out of the car and walk the Blue Ridge Parkway.......2003-11-11
Designed as a "drive awhile - stop awhile" recreational road, the Blue Ridge Parkway is the most visited unit in the National Park Service. It has 17 million visitors a year as compared to 10 million a year for the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. But the Parkway is more than a beautiful drive; it is also a good base from which to hike. Adkins describes all the ways that we can get out of the car as we explore the Parkway. From a leg-stretcher to a view of Glassmine Falls Trail to the eighteen miles of the Shut-In Trail, Adkins gives a contextual introduction to the hike as well as step-by-step directions. He rates each hike from an easy leg-stretcher to strenuous.
My only objection to the rating is that the author considers too many hikes as strenuous. For example, Adkins labels the Snooks Nose Trail, eight miles round trip and described as "not well-maintained and hard to locate" as strenuous. The two-and-a-half mile round trip hike up to Mt. Pisgah, on a clear, well-marked trail, is also rated as "strenuous". Hikers will have to decide what strenuous means to them. Ratings aside, the book is necessary to anyone looking for a variety of hikes in the area. The appendices are also a wealth of information. He lists every feature on the Parkway along with its mileage, all the inns and campgrounds as well as a roadside bloom calendar
Don't visit the Blue Ridge Parkway without it!.......2002-09-22
The Blue Ridge Parkway, almost 450 miles long, connects Shennandoah National Park in Virginia with Great Smoky Mountains National Park astride the North Carolina - Tennessee border. In between it traverses some of the most beautiful mountain areas in North Carolina and Virginia. Although it provides splendid views from the road itself and from its many roadside overlooks, it is much more than a scenic drive. It is a ribbon of land administered by the National Park Service, at several places broadening into wider mini-parks. All of those parks as well as various other spots along the parkway's route have hiking trails that give visitors a closer look at the many natural wonders there. This book, as a comprehensive guide to those trails, is the one most indispensable guide to getting beyond your car and the overlooks in this remarkable National Park Service land. All of its official trails are rated in this book as to difficulty, from very easy to quite strenuous. Thus there are ample hikes for whatever level of wilderness adventure you're up for. Each hike is described in details, with points of interest described in the order you'll encounter them, with mileages to each from the trailhead. Some hikes described herein also get beyond the parkway's own lands, into National Forest lands that border the parkway in many places, as well as occasional adjacent commercial attractions such as Grandfather Mountain. Any visit to the Blue Ridge Parkway should be quite rewarding, and this book is one of the best resources for making it even more so, showing that you'll never be very far from places to park and take a walk for a more intimate view. And you definitely should sample at least some of the shorter and easier walks, if not the longer or more challenging ones, depending on what you're up to. This parkway is a natural treasure well-worth exploring, and this book may well be the quickest way to learn that there is so much more there than meets a casual eye.
A great companion.......2002-09-17
for a day trip, a weekend trip, or a long vacation. We have hiked and camped in several of the places mentioned. I have lived in NC all of my life and did not realize there was such enriching trails and escapades off the parkway. I wish I had known about this book while attending WCU! Take it with you, it is very worthwhile.

reads more like historical fiction.......2007-06-20
the author's evident admiration for the subject destroys any faith in the objectivity
of his writing...if read as fiction by someone with a limited background, it could be
enjoyable.
A Tremendous Contribution.......2007-02-27
Taibo's book on Ché is monumental. It distresses many North Americans to discover a Ché Guevara who does not conform to the popular (and erroneous)belief systems so prevalent in the States. Taibo pays little attention to the myths and a lot of attention to facts, and weaves the information into a cohesive -- and verifiable -- story about this extraordinary person. You do not, however, want to drop this book on your foot: it's a monster...probably weighs a kilo, anyway. But the content is as solid as is the book itself; and more to the point, it is a much more human, much more aware history of Ché than any of the other Ché bios that I have encountered, in either Spanish or English. Even if you don't read the thing, but just carry it around to build up your arm muscles, having the book on the table at a restaurant or a coffee-shop can be fun: people react to it in interesting ways, as one might expect...you soon understand why there are so many Ché t-shirts and so few Henry Kissinger t-shirts, that's for sure. This thing is a tour de force, worth every penny. It may take some time to finish it, but it is worth the work to do so. You may become more haunted by Ché's vision and his results, but you will also become more understanding of him and his time...and better able to understand the tremendous changes that he brought (and continues to bring)to Latin America and the West in general. Not to be missed; and if you're lucky, you can find a copy of "Sueños Rebelde" to go along with it. Good luck, and good reading!
The most enjoyable of all Che's bios.......2002-10-25
In the US, Paco Taibo II is better known within the mystery readers' crowd for his accomplished police stories with a touch of irony and a shrewd writing style. For this reason with certain apprehension I started reading this biography. In fact it was the first complete and serious Che's bio I have ever read. Later I grabbed Jon Lee Anderson's one... Of all Che's bios Paco's is the most enchanting one. It may lack the huge documention of Anderson's book, but it compensates it with an amazing style. Paco cannot divorce his own admiration of Che from his subject, but, hey, that is exactly why this book becomes so much enjoyable. I still recall grabbing the book (700 hundred pages!) one morning and going that same night to bed with the book in my hands! I couldn't stop reading it! Che's story is reflected under the light of an amazing storyteller. The episodes of Che's story are exquisitely threaded together in a masterful way. His life becomes flesh and blood in Paco's hands. The icon, the symbol of rebellion and struggle for social justice turns a man, an incredible, passionate and admirable human being throughout the book. The end cannot be better: it is ghostly but hopeful with a lot of energy and sadness and beauty: a song to Latin American history of struggle.

Che Guevara was here before he was born. Che Guevara is still here after his assasination. He represents the highest feelings andconcepts on justice, rebellion and freedom against any kind of tirany. That's why his photo is world-spread by palestinians, puertoricans, cubans, mexicans, germans, koreans. That's why his life of sacrifice and example can't never be erased.

great storytelling.......2004-11-13
...when you are looking at the cover of this book by this veteran comix artist you may wonder whether he has gone out of his famous and remarkable style and beacme more mainstream. Well, rest assured, he did not. This fine volume of Jackson historical revisionism is every bit as good as his prior famous works, e.g. "Comanche Moon" and others. This time again it is Texas, but Texas of Reconstruction era, one period of our history that has not been fully explained and is usually taught very one-sided at the universities at al. Here, Mr. Jackson attempts and is successful in giving us a point of view that the conquered Confederate Texas might have held. Since these were times of sudden change and brutality, thus there is violence, more violence, rivalry, racial prejudice, social strife, medeival-like vendetta cycles, poverty - all told with astonishing and refreshing detail and precision of this veteran underground comix artist. Necessarily, this one is a very controversial angle of the Reconstruction era, the subject and theme being loaded with racial and social prejudices and hatred that Hardin and his kind might have had and it seems that they in fact had. This is not for the politically correct folks, but rather for those who seek to find out some reasonable explanation and to gain deeper foundation in order to gain the feel of what might have been like during those hard times in Texas. Finally, Mr. Jackson tells his story while maintaing the most amazing attention to every possible historical detail( as every personality, their guns, clothes and other period material culture items and pieces are acurately portrayed albeit drawn in his unique graphic style). One may ask what more is to ask about this work that is both the finest graphic storytelling and a fine example of reasonable yet passionate historical scholarship.
The Good (cover), The Bad (text), & The Ugly (artwork).......2000-05-14
Intriguing, romantic cover that captures the Westerner's imagination. Too bad the cover artist didn't write & illustrate this book (really a comic book as "graphic novel" would be a complimentary exaggeration). Text is apologist history, weak on facts, thick on excuses for Hardin's murderous tendencies. Hardin doesn't get to his infamous gunfighting career until page 86, so "Lost Cause" doesn't even work as a traditional Western romp. Artwork inside is crude featuring stiff, exaggerated characters that make "Pokemon" look like Rembrandt. "Lost Cause" doesn't work as history or entertainment. If you are interested in Hardin, check out Leon Metz's or Richard Marohn's bios or even Hardin's autobiography. As for "Lost Cause," save your money--the cover is the best part & you've already seen that.

Customer Reviews:
Saved my Life!!! A must read for EVERYONE!.......2006-08-11
This book literally saved my life. I experienced an excruciating, pulsating headache, worse than any migraine I've ever had. I was turned away from the emergency room, told it was just stress or anxiety. I knew something more was wrong so I decided to research my symptoms. According to this book, the headache was a sign of bleeding in the brain. Terrified, I went back to the emergency room and demanded a CT Scan. After 6 hours of arguing with doctors & nurses, including threats of callinga social worker for me, they finally gave me one. (I think to shut me up!) They discovered a 2 cm growth in my left temporal lobe that was bleeding internally. I was operated on a few days later, and I'm now at home recovering. As a mother of two small children, I cannot imagine the consequences if I had not read that tip!
True Life Saver!!!!!!.......2006-03-02
Its amazing to read this book and then after years of dealing with doctors, to finaly fix whats wrong. This is a truely awsome book, I recomend it to anyone who has a bad doctor!!!!
The Eyes Don't Have It........2003-07-27
This book is not comprehensive. I looked under the eyes section for the symptoms of seeing spots and lightning flashes (a sign of a detached retina), and there was nothing about it. This is a serious warning sign by your body that could lead to blindness unless you get laser treatment immediately, but this book says nothing about it.
Every home should have this book........2000-08-27
Very informative, well researched, and easy to understand. This book could save your life!

Book Description
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) epitomized the "painter as poet" with work that was steeped in mythology and mysticism, portraying colorful dreams and folktales deeply rooted in his Russian Jewish origins. No 20th-century artist approached him in popularity, and the full range of his work is on display in this richly illustrated Spanish-language entry in the Basic Art series celebrating major artists.

The happy painter of images!.......2006-05-09
His muse was Bella. He celebrated every anniversary of his wedding with a picture in which he and her appeared.
"The inner world is perhaps, more real than the visible world.", affirmed once.
Almost all his work have consisted in love pictures, sinuous fantasies that seemed to disorient the spectator, where birds, quadrupeds and fishes join to a Ode to Joy. His chosen colors acquire vivid tunes of the rainbow; with them variegates details such tress curdled with exotic flowers, a horse that plays a violin, hen' s eggs inside a gold' s nestle, or a cow that jumps on the ceiling of a house.
You will also see, the his famous etched plates to illustrate the Bible as well as his famous pictorial motive on the roof of Paris Opera.
This detailed and splendid biography has everything you request. "The three candles" has always been one of my favorites works of this notable artist.
It' s pleasantly illustrated with abundant information and wonderful reproductions. Go for it without dilation.
The painting made poetry!.......2005-04-17
The first little detail that called me powerfully my attention was the his birth date: July 7, just twenty seven years after Mahler's birthday. He was a poet, an individualist, and a lonely artist. Absolutely divorced from this almost genetic standpoint to follow the road about the traditional slave art's autarchy, however, he will always maintain the essential roots of his Jewish ancestors. The vanishing perspectives of the most of his works would seem a dreamy pattern, challenging and daring all kind of conventionalism.
"It must no paint pictures with symbols. When an artwork is really authentic, exist by themselves symbolism in it". That sharp reflection is so narrowed linked with a Robert Bresson 's statement: "Let the facts lead to the feelings and not vice versa"
Consider his most famous painting: The three candles, where the lovers couple defy not only the gravity 's acceleration, but are by themselves a real breakthrough with the oppressed human beings. The sad harlequin and the tragic red, the couple is just so far from being happy, they weep the invisible presence of the implacable menace. There' s an incisive line in Fassbinder' s Maria Braun in which she says in imperceptibly to her sister: "All the happy persons seem to be some vulgar, when one is unhappy".
Particularly interesting are the mythic cycle between 1975 and 1977 with those admirable motives. Icaro and Orpheus' myth.
Admirably investigative work and abundant in excellent reproductions of the most selective work of this singular painter.

Henry Miller once described Marc Chagall as a "poet with the wings of a painter." The pages of Chagall are filled with images that prove the writer's words true. Though Chagall is remembered primarily as a painter, his artistic vision expressed itself in many other forms, including sculpture, mosaics, and the stained glass windows that grace the Art Institute of Chicago as well as synagogues and churches in both Europe and the United States. The volume affords readers glimpses of his profligate work as well as the opportunity to follow Chagall as he moved from his early years in Russia to Paris, the United States, and back to France. During that time, his painting flirted with the various art movements around him--surrealism and fauvism most notably--but his dominant themes remained constant throughout the seven decades that he made art. Chagall's mysticism, his deep religious sentiment, and his playfulness are revealed in the hundreds of full-color images lushly reproduced in this volume. The commentary provided by Chagall scholar and friend Jacob Baal-Teshuva expertly guides readers through the artist's various moods and media and underscores the passion of belief and feeling that informed all of his artwork.

Short, but still very sweet.......2005-04-01
This book collects some of Chagall's works, mostly paintings, but also mosaics, stained glass windows, and the ceiling of the Paris opera (stunning), into sections describing different parts of his life and career.
The text was intersting and illuminating in very few words, which was good, because that left more room for full-color plates of Chagall's brilliant works! I could just stare at each one for many minutes and get more out of it with each minute! The man was a genius. And the plates are pretty high-quality, so it's easy to really enjoy them.
The only reason I did not give this book five stars was I thought it was a little short, considering the scope of Chagall's work. It would be difficult, indeed, to produce a book that would be completely comprehensive, and maybe the author had a page limitation because of the series he was writing for, but I sure would have liked to see more works presented.
I have some other books on Chagall in the queue: one on watercolors and gouaches, and two books of lithographs. I'll report back on those once I've read and gazed at them.
It's a sticker book.......2000-12-08
I'm not sure what this other reviewer is talking about, it has to be for another book and it ended up here. This isn't really a "book" it's just a bunch of stickers. They're nice stickers though - little reproductions of some of Chagall's artwork. Pretty high-quality as far as stickers go.
The most wonderful book about Chagall.......2000-04-26
This is the most wonderful book about Chagall I've ever seen. The colorful and beautiful illustrations made me so exciting. The colors are fantastic compared with other books about Chagall. I recommend this book for any Chagall fan confidently. Though it has something to be desired because of being written in Spanish instead of English, this is only for you!
Fabulous book!.......1999-12-10
This is an extraordinary book for every Chagall fan. The quality of illustrations is just wonderful, and if you had only one book to buy on Chagall, this is the one! Don't worry, its not heavy at all; in fact, I would have added more and more pages of never-been-seen work of this incredible artist. The illustrations are colorful, vivid and beautiful, and the biography is very well written and complete. Strongly recommended!
Beautiful!.......1999-10-04
