Book Description

There are not many people who can claim to have been collecting, cooking, and devising recipes for mushrooms for more than sixty years, but Antonio Carluccio is one of them. Carluccio's interest in mushrooms-his mycological education-began at the age of seven when he went on mushroom hunts with his father and has culminated in his Neal Street Restaurant in London.

Today, mushrooms are more popular then ever. Chefs everywhere use these delectable morsels to provide a powerful punch of flavor, without adding many calories or fat.
The book begins with a complete field guide, in which forty species are identified with photos. To ensure safety, poisonous look-alike species are also meticulously documented. Then comes a veritable feast of more than 150 mushroom recipes-from classic Italian preparations to Asian-inspired creations and contemporary dishes. Mouthwatering photos accompany each recipe and evoke the earthy sensuality that only mushrooms can bring to the table. In The Complete Mushroom Book, Antonio Carluccio shares the excitement of the hunt and a lifetime of expertise in the kitchen with a new generation of enthusiasts eager to reap the pleasures of cooking with mushrooms.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Mushroom Book.......2007-01-09

This book is what the title says - The complete mushroom book. It is the only book you need. Read it, learn and you can be safe picking all mushrooms in Sweden and the rest of the world. And then you can make the most delicius dishes with help from Antonio Carluccio's recipes. He is the most marveleus mushroom expert both in the woods, fields and citchen. I am very impressed!

4 out of 5 stars A Feast for the Mycophyle and the Mycophagist.......2003-12-29

This book by an Italian, Antonio Carluccio, transplanted to England covers the botanical classifications of edible mushrooms and fungi, tips on collecting, a guide to identifying edible and toxic mushrooms, and a large collection of mushroom recipes. It has many things to recommend it, but it also should be given more than a cursory thought if you have an interest in purchasing the book.

As a compulsive book collector, I often justify the purchase of a book solely on the presence of one good idea comprising not much more than a page or two, but you may not have such liberal criteria when laying out the long green for a book, especially for bone white plants.

The devil's advocate view of this book is that:

It's coverage of mushroom identification and distinction of culinary from toxic is weak in that the book does not give a consistant photographic coverage to all species. I would be extremely nervous if I knew someone was using only this book as a field guide. A quick comparison photographs for the edible boletus badius on page 33 with the toxic russula emetica on page 71 shows how similar two very different mushrooms can look. The comparison is scarier when you see that the two species flourish at the same time of the year. My main point is that to a non-mycologist, this appears to be a very inadequate field guide. Much better would be one species per page with much more consistant coverage over all species.

While the title of the book refers to all mushrooms, it's emphasis is clearly on wild mushrooms. About 75 percent of all the recipes call for wild mushrooms, primarily morels and many of the recipes calling for cultivated species call for unusual or expensive species, up to and including truffles.

So what does that leave for the non-mushroom hunter living in Brooklyn? Here are some reasons for buying this book:

The well written text and good photography provides a worthy vicarious experience of the thrills of mushroom hunting in Devon, England.

The recipes give several worthy methods for preserving mushrooms, including drying and pickling. This is the material I would pick to primarily justify the purchase. I have not seen it anywhere else.

Even if you substitute the humble Pennsylvania button mushroom or the slightly more upscale cremini for the blue stocking morels and procinis, you get a wealth of recipes to add to a vegetarian diet. The recipes draw heavily from French and Italian cuisine, but they include a broad selection from various oriental cuisines as well. Even a fair number of German and Spanish dishes are included. Oddly, there seems to be practically no recipes for the portobello.

You also get useful practical tips on handling and eating mushrooms. The book makes it clear that almost every mushroom is healthier to eat cooked than to eat raw. I have heard it said that even our darling little Kennet Square button mushrooms have toxins which must be cooked to remove the toxins. Give the raw mushrooms a pass the next time you hit the salad bar. The information on taking special care with raw mushrooms and alcohol is pretty chilling, but again, as testified by the long popularity of Coq au Vin, this danger is eliminated by thorough cooking.

In general, I would rate the culinary advice on mushroom technique to be very useful.

Since I am very fond of cookbooks on single subjects, I recommend this book for the recipes and techniques and background on mushroom culture and collection in the wild, as long as you keep the wild part to your armchair. The price is a bit high, so I would not click on the order button without some check on alternate titles, especially the volume by Jane Grigson, `The Mushroom Feast' which I have not yet had the pleasure to sample.

I would not buy this book again. There doesn't seem to be any new information that I can't find in other books, and not anywhere near as much information as in any of the following books. The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, Simon & Schuster's Guide to Mushrooms and the Smithsonian Handbooks Mushrooms are all much better from my point of view.

The first part of this book has beautiful photographs of edible mushrooms growing in the wild. Really makes you want to go out and search the woods for them! The reader is told how to identify, collect and store the different varieties.

There's also a section on poisonous mushrooms with accompanying photographs and these are also discussed.

If you're in a hurry, go right to the recipe section where there are over 100 pages of the most pleasing looking meals that anyone can imagine. How does French Onion and Morel Soup sound? Or perhaps Fillet of Sole Bon Femme? Well, I can tell you they are delicious. Bon Appetit!

5 out of 5 stars Required Reference for Wild Mushrooms.......2000-10-21

For the beginner this book is a wonderful, easy to use, easy to understand manual for the study of wild mushrooms.

It gives a complete soup to nuts (more like spore to the table) approach to understanding mushrooms.

For the more experienced hunter this book provides great incite into the care of mushrooms for food, handling/storage methods, and preparation of various species.

          The recipes are excellent.

Overall this book is informative, a palate pleaser, and pleasing to the eye as the photographs superb.

If you want to learn about mushrooms, this is the book to get. The color photos made it real easy to see which ones they were talking about at any given time.

The zydler guide was ok in its time. But the new Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus is very, very much better than the Zydler. ALL PAGES IN COLOR, beautyful photos and nearly 200 precise charts. Dont dream of cruising panama without it.

2 out of 5 stars New Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus is way better.......2006-07-04

We just finished (July 2006) cruising the Pacific side of Panama and through the canal and found the Zydler guide to not be as useful as the newer Bauhaus guide. The major difference is in the charts & chartlets - the Bauhaus guide is all color charts that look like real charts - the Zydler guide is all B&W hand drawn sketches that are extremely hard to read - virtually useless. The Zydler guide has more words but less useful information as it's quite a bit older and some information is way out of date - eg. the Western Panama Islands like Coiba.

I am the author of Lonely Planet's guide to Panama. While conducting research for LP Panama I came across this incredible work by Nancy Schwalbe Zydler and Tom Zydler. Their attention to detail is remarkable. The history and description they provide is right on and well put. Much of the information that appears on the islands they comment upon you won't find anywhere else. For cruising sailors and Panama buffs alike, The Panama Guide is an excellent read and a vast source of knowledge. My hat's off to both of you Zydlers for a job extremely well done.

4 out of 5 stars A Shocking Trip Down Memory Lane.......2005-01-25

Just finished this book and couldn't believe how many of the scandals I had forgot over the last decade. I guess I can be forgiven as there were an endless string of mismanagement, political power to extremes and maybe even possibly criminal activity.

Paul Tunn has written the textbook on the Chrétien years, it makes for a historical review of that decade. But beyond the scandal it is how the PM used the power of the office to confuse the issue, demonize the accuser and never apologize.

Paul's book also sheds light on the current PM, his relationship with Chretien, and how he learned to handle scandals of his own.
Once you've read this book you can see the game plan play out the next time a scandal hits. (Don't worry you won't have to wait long)

This is absolutely my favorite crewel book! Katherine Shaugnessy has taken crewel to a new level that works with the modern as well as the traditional home decor. Her instructions and diagrams are designed for the novice as well as the experienced embroiderer. She has so many new and different ideas and ways to use embroidery you won't know where to begin. Her fantastic use of color is the key to this super book and I can't wait to get started! This is definately a must have for anyone who loves embroidery as I do.

I love this book - with Katherine's instructions, it was very easy for me to learn how to make beautiful crewel artwork. (disclaimer: I already knew how to cross stitch which may have helped.)

The patterns are fresh & kind of funky with a few classic beauties thrown in for good measure.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! It's full of fabulously funky projects, great color suggestions, and very simple instructions and patterns. I have already purchased this book as a gift for others. I would highly recommend it.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Rave Review.......2007-06-29

I can't say enough wonderful things about this book. The designs are so graphically beautiful and modern; the up close photographs are clear and wonderful; the instructions are very good and the projects are useful and creative.

                  5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-04-16

This book is great! As others have said, I have a lot of problems finding modern patterns, but I still love needlepoint and embroidery. I've never tried crewelwork for the simple reason that I had NEVER found a book (thinking none existed) that offered ideas for modern, funky ideas. This one solves all my reservations! I'm so excited! Between simply making the samplers, the greeting cards, and the lampshade idea, I don't know if I'll be able to put this book down!!!

A great way to remember people and special occassions. A perpetual calendar that allows you to list special occassions for every day of the year. I have used this very calendar from Mary Engelbreit for 15 years. My recent purchase have been as gifts. For those who enjoy Mary Engelbreit's style of artwork, this is a fun birthday calendar. The artwork is whimsical and fun to look at. We just write each person's name at the appropriate date for his or her birthday or anniversary, along with the year. Then it hangs next to our desk for ongoing use.

The product is a great idea not only to keep track of birthdays, but any other important date. You just flip the page for each new month and all the info. is there. It fits in a desk drawer perfectly. It has lessened the apologies I have had to make for sending late cards to family and friends!

                        Book Description

The life and times of one of our most enchanting artists; a twentieth-century fairy tale, lovingly remembered and luminously told. Fourteen years ago, the artist Dorothea Tanning published Birthday, a collection of reminiscences. Now she has expanded it into a memoir of her journey through the last century as confidant, collaborator, and muse to some of its most inspired minds and personalities: a diverse assemblage that ranges from the fathers of dada and surrealism to Virgil Thompson, George Balanchine, Alberto Giacometti, Dylan Thomas, Truman Capote, Joan Miró, James Merrill, and many more. At its center is the relationship, tenderly rendered, between Tanning and her famed husband, the enigmatic surrealist Max Ernst. Whether recalling the poignant presence of her friend Joseph Cornell or simply the facades along a Venice canal, "their filmy reflections fluttering in the dirty canal like fragile altar cloths hung out to dry," Tanning's writing is beguiling, wry, and shot through with the same eye for pregnant detail and immanent magic that marks her art.

I love this book. Ms Tanning writes with such a zest for life and creativity that I find it just spills over and communicates to the reader.
She lived an amzing life and came a long way from sleepy small town America. There was obviously a determination or a restless something at work.
Mosty of all I just enjoy the way she writes - it's a lively quircky style but to me it got across the kind of person I imagine Dorothea Tanning to be.
A work of character by a character -

3 out of 5 stars It Should Have Been So Much More.......2003-05-04

Indifferent writing, a surprising lack of insight into the incredible milieu in which she moved, and gratuitously catty remarks towards the great Leonora Carrington (an earlier Ernst protege who Tanning apparently feels threatened by 50 years after the fact) mar what should have been a very interesting memoir of a remarkable life. Tanning, Max Ernst's companion of 30 years and a compelling painter in her own right, was at the heart of one of the great artistic movements of the 20th Century, but this work reads like a flat travel log of places gone to and roll call of persons met. The paucity of detail, personal anectdotes, and characterization of any of the luminaries mentioned mark Tanning's bio as a great disappointment.
--A two star book with one star added because any information on this artistic epoch provided by an active participant has to be considered an important contribution.
