Book Description
The publication in 1857 of Madame Bovary, with its vivid depictions of sex and adultery, incited a backlash of immorality charges. The novel tells the story of Emma Bovary, a doctor’s wife bored and unfulfilled by marriage and motherhood. She embarks upon a series of affairs in search of passion and excitement, but is unable to achieve the splendid life for which she yearns. Instead, she finds herself trapped in a downward spiral that inexorably leads to ruin and self-destruction.
Along with Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina,
Flaubert’s tragic novel stands as a brilliant portrayal of infidelity, an incisive psychological portrait of a woman torn between duty and desire. Written with acute attention to telling detail, Madame Bovary not only exposes the emptiness of one woman’s bourgeois existence and failure to fill that void with fantasies, sex, and material objects. Emma’s thirst for life mirrors the universal human impulse for idealized fulfillment.
Customer Reviews:
Hideous excuse of a classic - a dreadful story........2005-05-28
"Madame Bovary" is flawed in every way. The plot is one dimensional and not completely developed. Gustav Flaubert could not decide where he wanted to go with his plot - a risqué affair or how debt destroyed a family. With the shifting of the plots, I lost interest in the story, as I thought only the affair was the principal plot. The debt storyline felt like it was just thrown in, without a thought; I found it confusing and tedious. The writing was appalling, and I lost respect for Flaubert as a writer because of it. Such poor grammar and sentence structure! The characters were underdeveloped and lacked motivation. I had no idea why the characters were the way they were, and because of it, I didn't care about them. Chapters were devoted to irrelevant narratives that did not further develop or advance any storyline or character. The entire story was much too long, and I could not see where it was going (even if I did predict the ending). Overall, this so-called "classic" needs to be retired, as it does not stand the test of time, and its author was horrible in his thought process. I do not recommend.

Book Description
Ella Kennedy may not be perfect, but she's smart, she's dedicated, and she's finally managed to find a fascinating thesis subject in the morass of Marxist political theory: Eleanor Marx, the youngest daughter of Karl and a bright light in the Marxist movement, who famously declined after a disastrous love affair. With tenacity, with vigor, Ella Kennedy, Ph.D. student extraordinaire, begins delving into the world of Eleanor just as she takes a job setting up a Marxist mail-order catalogue at the fledgling Institute of Thought in Washington, D.C. -- a veritable three-ring circus.
When Ella's own life begins to parallel Eleanor's -- right down to the domineering father (Ella's is known as the king of discount merchandising) and the distant yet brilliant lover -- the theoretical, the political, and the personal collide in a hilarious romp of a novel. Wacky, heartwarming, and deliciously smart, this novel of heartbreak and hilarity on the doctoral circuit is the intersection of Laura Zigman, Nora Ephron, and Richard Russo.
Download Description
Ella Kennedy is in a rut. Nearly thirty, she's at risk of becoming both a perpetual graduate student and a continual failure at relationships. After spending three years at Columbia University ripping up outlines for her thesis topic of Marxist scholarship, she takes a job in Washington, D.C., at the fledgling Institute of Thought. Her assignment: establish a Web site and mail-order catalogue to market Karl Marx paraphernalia. Her dilemma: she is both computer illiterate and distracted by a thesis topic that she finds engaging. Against her advisor's wishes, she sets out to document the tragic life of Karl Marx's daughter Eleanor -- a brilliant woman who fell apart during the course of a bad relationship. Meanwhile, Ella meets Nigel Lark, an adorably disheveled ornithologist with a delicious British accent; it is love at first sight. But as their relationship develops, Ella realizes that her own life is starting to mirror Eleanor's. For one thing, Nigel wears a wedding band and he doesn't want to talk about it... Deftly weaving fact and fiction, past and present, socialist theory and side-splitting humor, Susan Coll presents a warm and witty novel in the tradition of Cathleen Schine, Laura Zigman, and the Ephron sisters. karlmarx.com is a love story full of wonderful absurdities.

Funny first novel about life as a graduate student.......2001-12-03
Read KARLMARX.COM, a first novel by Susan Coll . . . this funny tale is about a graduate student whose life is turned upside down by both her lover and employer . . . in addition, she is having troubles finishing her dissertation about Eleanor Marx (the youngest daughter of Karl) . . . eventually, the lives of the graduate student and Eleanor Marx run parallel tracks--and that is what makes this book so interesting to read.
Also, Cool has a real feel for dialogue . . . and I found myself laughing out loud several times.
There were many memorable passages; among them:
That my parents did not approve of my flirtation with campus communism went without saying. But then it was tough to recall a time when any of my variously fleeting ideologies had earned their praise. Certainly not when,as an eleven-year-old, I had liberated all of the meat in our sub-zero freezer
and fed it to the neighbor's dog in a zealous attack of vegetarianism. Nor did they show much enthusiasim when I became enamored of existentialism as a brooding high school junior and took to chain-smoking cigarettes and quoting Satre at dinner.
My parents both stopped chewing and stared, enchanted. No one had ever complimented my mother on her cooking before. Eating my mother's cooking was simply something we tolerated, like having our teeth cleaned. I dared not tell them aobut the marriage proposal. My father would probably drop his fork and run directly to the phone to book the caterer.
A picnic! I was thrilled. What child does not love a picnic? What child is not inordinately thrilled by the prospect of schlepping otherwise mundane food outside and then sitting on the ground and eating it while batting away bees and stomping on ants?
Nice little book from first time author.......2001-05-12
I'd like to add half a star to make it a 3-1/2 star rating, but format's format
I live in DC, so maybe that adds to why a liked it, but I think this book would generally appeal to any person who has a habit of getting stuck in absurd situations and is too shy or directionless to pull out. That's the main character's flaw. It was graduate school for me, as well as for main character Ella Kennedy.
Ella faces the absurdities of an unfinished disertation, her DC think-tank, and relationships with her parents, boyfriend, and ex-bestfriend. At the same time, I enjoyed the reconsiderations of Karl Marx, and the parallel story of Karl Marx's doomed daughter (the subject of Ella's errant disertation).
But more entertaining for me were the generational differences Ella must ford through; from her boss's instruction to whip out a web-page overnight (even though the computer doesn't even have a modem) to her super-capitalist dad who is uninterestedly humored by her daughter's dabblings in the history of Marx. A live in British boyfriend who smokes like a chimney and can only communicate when the subject is orinthology -- although not a cross-generation relationship -- presents similar difficulties to Ella just the same.
Although some plots develop in a whacky direction, they resolve themselves well before they reach ridiculously unbelievable levels. The result is a quick book of very human situations and dialouge filled with good solid comedy.
KarlMark.Com is a great title for a very good book!.......2001-04-01
Put this book on your summer reading list! Author Susan Coll's strength lies in her brilliant dialogue.

Book Description
Eleanor was the youngest of three surviving Marx children. She was the only one to be born, live, love, work and die in England and to become a public figure in her own right. Yvonne Kapp, in this highly acclaimed biography, brilliantly succeeds in capturing Eleanor's spirit, from a lively child, opining on the world's affairs, to the new woman, aspiring to the stage, earning her living as a free intellectual, and helping to lead England's unskilled workers at the height of the new unionism; being always more than, yet at the same time inescapably, Marx's daughter. So inevitablyand fortunatelyEleanor's biography is also an unrivalled biography of the Marx household in Victorian London, of the Marx circle, and especially of Frederick Engels, the family's extraordinary mentor.

That is like a woman! But seriously, Nora, you know what I think about that. No debt, no borrowing. There can be no freedom or beauty about a home life that depends on borrowing and debt. We two have kept bravely on the straight road so far, and we will go on the same way for the short time longer that there need be any struggle.
Download Description
Nora Helmer, the naive and pretty wife of Torvald, has no opinions or talents of her own in male-dominated 19th-Century Norwegian society. Their life is comfortable and respectable, and their ideals are conventional. But when Torvald was ill, Nora borrowed money from her father's bank with a forged signature and did not tell her husband. She is desperately trying to pay back the funds now that Torvald is well and due for a profitable career appointment. When he discovers the existence of the loan, he is shocked and angry and tells her he can no longer trust her. His attempts to control her by demanding complete obedience in opposition to her compassionate feelings and behavior forces Nora to see that her entire marriage was used for Torvald's gratification. She has no right to think for herself or make worthwhile decisions on her own. He believes there is no place of authority for her if she cannot fit easily into an unexplored life of domestic satisfaction. Even though Ibsen wrote this a hundred years ago, his assessment of women's economic and emotional dependence in marriage is intensely accurate.

somaia n. A Doll's House.......2007-05-21
A Doll's House is an outstanding play that brings up many topics into question, topics such as gender roles, love in marriage, and self fulfillment vs. family duties and responsibility. I think that Nora's and Torvald's characters are excellently drawn out to show the extremes of what could go wrong in a seemingly normal and happy home in 19th century Europe. Gender roles, even though they have changed drastically over the century, have roots from the beginning of time that stick throughout the years. Roots such as that women are more likely to stay at home and men are more likely to be the ones to work; even though these days women and men are legally and socially equal. Nora's actions in the play were courageous and good intentioned, even though they went against her husband's wishes. I really liked how she was created to be so naive that she did not realize that she had no life of her own, but despite that naivete, she still understood that something was missing. Torvald, on the other hand, knew perfectly well that Nora was not living life as people should, but out of his selfishness, he let things be as they were; he enjoyed life that way. What I liked most about this play was Nora's decision to live and to learn and be her own person, even though that meant huge sacrifice on her part and that of her family's. Was she selfish in doing what she did? That question is hard to answer. Should one live for themselves or is that right gone once they have children? Usually, I would say that a mother's duty to her children comes before anything, even her own needs; but what made Nora's situation so difficult was that she was a child herself, she never had the choice to live her life, once she had the chance it's good that she took advantage of it. The play was definetely worth the time spent reading it.
A pleasant surprise!.......2007-05-21
This was quite an entertaining play! Very nice - I like it! In all seriousness, it's a fascinating story that revolves around the ideas of gender roles and the negativity that is associated with creating such distinctions in society. `Tis a well constructed (translated) piece, despite originating in Norway.
The characters within speak frequently and frankly, constantly interacting with one another. The simplicity with which this play is written is used to convey a broad message about how society is harsh towards those who do not live up to their associated gender roles. For example, Krogstad is seen by the other characters as a scroungy rogue, minus the charm, associated with being a divorced father of two.
While it may not be the sort of drama that can draw a sleazy crowd with a brief tagline or an action packed trailer, it entices it audience with realistically portrayed characters in a convincing setting with an invigorating premise. Oh, and it speaks for universal human efficacy.
Functional edition of _A Doll's House_.......2007-05-14
First, the content -- Ibsen's play is as powerful and -- perhaps surprisingly -- as relevant as ever in today's supposedly more gender-equalized culture. Nora Helmer's predicament as a woman who faces the seemingly impossible choice between self-development and family is treated in a masterful way by Ibsen, who in the process manages to work in connections between bourgeois domestic culture, money, and spirituality.
But this edition is very functional -- no notes and a brief intro only. I have to say that I was a bit shocked because the new copy I ordered looked like it had been pulled out from the bottom of some old craters because it even had the faint impression of a sole on it!
Read it Aloud........2007-04-28
Ibsen's best known play about the strictures imposed on women by society. It may be from a hundred years ago, but the plight of Nora and her world is a cautionary tale about life now.
Nora is simple and yet there is a complexity about her. Her naiveté is both her charm and her undoing. Torvald, her husband, is prominent and she is to be showy--a living doll. Nora is to be a mirror that reflects her husband beautifully.
The plot concerns financial woes in the marriage--and secrets kept and broken--in these, the story is not unlike most stressful marriages.
We can speculate about what Nora could or should have done but the die is cast.
This play is good for helping younger readers understand that assumptions about roles in marriage are still there, and have to be understood and discussed in order to help a marriage thrive.
If you have a place where you can read this aloud, try it. Plays were meant to be spoken. The translation is superb.
Amazing!!.......2007-03-04
Wow. No matter how many times I read this play, it just keeps moving me. It always has something new in it, something brilliant and thought provoking. It's so crazy to my mind that this play was written in 1879 by a man. I mean, this is a serious slap in the face to a lot of the marriage conventions of that time period. I realize that to someone raised in today's culture, it's really nothing but we live in a completely different world. The Victorians took marriage very seriously. It was so shocking that the lead actress in Germany refused to play the part of Nora, unless Ibsen changed the ending

Customer Reviews:
Great Anthology!.......2002-05-30
I read this book in a day...well half of it. I finished it in two days and I found it to be very informative about prison since the stories come from prisoners.
Fascinating anthology.......2001-07-16
This compassionate collection of prisoner autobiographies made me feel very sad in places, angry in others, hopeful and encouraged in still others. The accounts, like the prisoners who wrote them, are diverse: their tone varies from poetic and sublime to gruesome and shocking. Few, if any, are self-pitying. The editor seems to have taken great pains in selecting pieces that tell a different story about criminals' lives: how backgrounds (mostly horrific) aren't always to blame for their choices in life, how criminals *can* tell right from wrong, and how deeply sorry (but not always able to express that sorrow, and seldom encouraged to do so) many of these prisoners are for the damage they've done to others and to themselves. This is a fascinating, revealing read. Anyone who has any interest at all in prisoners' backgrounds, crime or criminals will relish this superb collection of autobiographical stories that editor Jeff Evans has compiled.
Rare glimpses into the lives of America's human garbage.......2001-06-29
I met the author of this book recently at a reading/signing in Brooklyn, NY and asked him why he wrote it. He was careful to point out that it was a collaborative effort of nearly 40 people but that he was always interested in the personal histories of prisoners and just could never find a book on them. Indeed, this is the first time I've ever come across a book like this too. I'm always skeptical about anything prisoners have to say, but I was deeply affected by the stories of these prisoners' lives. They were honest-sounding and eye-opening, and the piece by William Skeans, in which he describes his own family as "white trash" was especially heartbreaking. One woman prisoner wrote about her father's suicide and, although her piece was short, it left me feeling as numb as the author after she saw her blood-spattered mother seated in the living room. Not all criminals are witnesses to violence, but as Jimmy Santiago Baca writes in his preface, "For most of these writers, their childhood environment consisted of dope fiends, alcoholics, or thieves who lied, cheated, stole and raped, plundering their innocence and any chance of a normal life. When this happens to you as a kid, it virtually guarantees you'll end up behind bars." These well-chosen autobiographical stories will live on in your mind and make you think seriously about the nature of crime and our unforgiving justice system.
Essential view from the inside looking out.......2001-04-24
Moving, heartbreaking, infuriating, disturbing: this anthology gives voice to those behind bars, giving context not only to their crimes, but also to their lives. Some writers are self-serving - celebrity "Preppie Murderer" Robert Chambers whines about the daily drone of prison life, mentioning the reason for his incarceration only in passing. Just when he is on the cusp of getting your sympathy, he is sabotaged by his narcissistic verbosity. More moving are childhood remembrances that start off with a Norman Rockwell glow, but turn into traumas that scar for life - a father's suicide, a mother's abandoning her children at a social worker's office...
Editor Jeff Evans has done something that neither hang 'em high judges nor bleeding heart liberals have tried: he has given the supposed worst of our society back their humanity by giving them a forum. Whether you agree or disagree with what they say, their words from the inside give more understanding to our world on the outside...and where the two collide.

Book Description
Knitting finally takes its rightful place on the spectrum of personal obsessions, alongside golfing, fishing, and gardening. The tangled life of the knitter is the subject of inspired nuttiness in these 300 tongue-in-cheek meditations from the self-proclaimed yarn harlot, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee.
As any knitter can attest to, this is an activity fraught with guilt, frustration, over-optimism, sly deception, and compulsion, along with passionate moments of creative enlightenment. To soothe the unraveled knitter's soul, Pearl- McPhee has selected some of her favorite quotes to cast off from, and then, like the standup comic of the knitting world, she rants, raves, and reflects on common experiences that are sure to leave avid knitters in stitches.
At Knit's End captures the wicked — and wickedly funny — musings of someone who doesn't really believe it's possible to knit too much, and who willingly sacrifices sleep, family, work, and her sanity on a regular basis in order to keep doing it. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee has seen it all — from the deadly “second sock syndrome,” to a house so full of yarn she can't find her washing machine, to desperate all-nighters spent feverishly finishing gifts.
This hilarious collection of short, pithy readings offers plenty of reassurance for anyone who has ever wondered, “Am I alone in my mania?”
Customer Reviews:
This book had me rolling!.......2007-08-27
I loved this book so much I shared it with 3 ladies in my church congregation and bought a copy for my aunt. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee encourages knitters with this book using humor that even a non-knitter would enjoy. Thanks to her support, I no longer feel guilty about the tiny (but growing) stash of knitting paraphanelia and yarn that seems to be ebbing its way into my life.
No spoonful of sugar required!!.......2007-05-18
Honey, if you love to knit (of course you do) and you love to laugh (which is good for you) BUY THIS BOOK!!! Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's debut (I'm pretty sure.) Anyone who knits and reads books by Louise Hay or Alan Cohen will especially appreciate it.
It's a cute little postcard size-6" x 4" and 3/4" thick (320 pages total), perfect for the obsessive knitter who must read about knitting as well as do it.
About 99% of the pages open with a quote from the usual quotables-Greek philosophers, Confucious, Einstein; to the likes of Bo Derek and the ever popular Anonymous and some folks I've never heard of. Then our sweet Steph spins for us a profound knitting truth-funny, enlightening, educational or all of the above. This is nicely rounded off with an affirmation.
Interspersed are pages of 'You know you knit too much when...', but let's be honest-there's no such thing as too much knitting. Except maybe to the uninitiated.
It's a fun little distraction for first thing in the morning, last thing at night and throughout the day when your hands have cramped up but you can still crack open this little gem and turn the pages. It's also ideal for any knitter's bathroom.
not my taste of humor.......2007-04-16
I bought this because so many readers love it. I just don't think it was funny. It's just not my taste. It was odd. I guess because this writer has a huge following of fans.
Excellent.......2007-04-10
I have used meditations from this book at the beginning and end of leading our prayer shawl ministry. It's a wonderful and very humerous book. In fact, several of the ladies purchased it after hearing the meditations.

I enjoyed this book so much that I bought one to give to a friend. It is
funny, entertaining and even profound, plus I learned several good knitting
hints. It can be read a few pages at a time, or re-read too. I loved it and have just purchased some other books by this author which I will be taking
on vacation with me. I can not imagine that a knitter, even a beginner, would not thoroughly enjoy this almost-pocket-size book.

Excellent Book for Building a Deck.......2001-02-25
This book was very informative and was all my husband and I needed to build our split level deck. We were able to easily enlarge a deck design from the book to fit out space.
Book Description
You can create play environments that will capture the imagination of your children or grandchildren for years. Four custom-designed play structures, with swings, slides, climbing ropes, nets, fitness equipment, and more, are profusely illustrated by plans, materials lists, and careful, step-by-step instructions make it possible for you to build them yourself.
Customer Reviews:
Very Limited.......2002-03-21
I really hate to give any book a negative review, but this book is very short and limited, showing only 4 play structures to build. They each have big moveable sections which are supposed to be fun for kids to rearrange their play structure. It is a good concept but these pieces are big and a kid could get injured very easily by dropping one on themselves or another child. Contrary to the books description, this does NOT include plans on building a climbing net or a climbing rope (which was the main reason I bought it in the first place).
The first third of its limited pages tells you "why" you should build a play structure. You probably have a reason why you want to build or you would not be trying to read a book on it. What we want to know is "how" to build one. Thankfully I came back to Amazon and found out there are much better books on the subject like the David Stiles books. Now he knows how to build imaginative play structures, play houses, and tree houses. The book on this page mentions in the beginning how great treehouses are, but has no instructions how to build one in the entire book. If you are in doubt borrow it from the library before buying, otherwise I do not reccommend.
Dad's project.......2000-03-25
I given this book in hopes of helping me build a play area for my son. The book was informative, but it did have limited ideas for play areas. It was a good reference tool, but again iI am looking for another book with more options and building ideas for the weekend builder.
Product Description
This book is concerned with the subjects of garden walls, patio paving, and step building. It is designed to you unravel some of the problems you en counter in deciding which material is best suited for the job and to guide you in the actual construction.
Book Description
The six-year-old is a complex child, entirely different from the five-year-old. Though many of the changes are for the good -- Six is growing more mature, more independent, more daring and adventurous -- this is not necessarily an easy time for the little girl or boy. Relationships with mothers are troubled -- most of the time Six adores mother, but whenever things go wrong, it's her fault. It used to be, at Five, that she was the center of the child's universe; now, the child is the center of his own universe.
Parents need the expert advice of Drs. Ames and Ilg during this difficult year, to explain parent-child relations, friendships with peers, what six-year-olds excel at, how they see the world, what it feels like to be entering the first grade. Children need patience and understanding to help make this transition easier.
Customer Reviews:
I loved this book.......2007-08-30
This book was recommended to me by our pediatrician, and it helped me greatly. Like others have mentioned, there are some outdated references in the book, but it really doesn't matter. I found this book to be highly reassuring that most of the so-called crazy things my son had been doing are, in fact, normal six-year-old behavior. Reading this book is like having a chat with a wise, elderly relative. I am so grateful to the pediatrician for recommending it to me, and I have recommended it to countless other parents, all of whom love it too.
Fabulous, enlightening Book!.......2007-05-13
I recommend this book and any other in the series to those parents who want to know their children better. These books afford you the opportunity to view the world through your child's eyes and reassures you that he/she is on track and just "going through a phase"!
Well worth the read and the money!

I have read all of this series of books beginning with Your Two-Year-Old: Terrible or Tender by Louise Bates Ames and Frances L. Ilg. (The books start with the one-year-old.) Their insight into the characteristics, behavior, and development of children is awesome. It seems sometimes that my daughter changes overnight from a loving, caring child into a "monster." I then go back and re-read and find comfort as she goes through this difficult or demanding stage that it is all very "normal"--that other children behave in the same way. The techniques given are so helpful and have worked every time when addapted to my daughter's personality. Dr. Ames states very clearly in the Foreword of each book that "ever child is an individual, different in many ways from every other child living--even from his or her own idential twin," and that no child is truly "average." Techniques are so simple, but in the heat of the problem something hard to think of on my own. Because of the difference at which children reach certain stages, I recomment that each book be read before the child reaches the age of a certain book. I urge every parent of one-year-olds through fourteen-year-olds to read these books and keep them handy for quick reference.
Have never failed me yet..........2007-04-30
I found a few Gesell books in my MILs storage shed when my now [..]daughter was about three. I thought they were hilariously outdated, but read them anyway. However, they were DEAD on accurate about where she was developmentally and where she was going to be. Consistently, I found myself coming back to "You're Three Year Old" and "Your Four Year Old" and then finding and buying the other books as they went along.
Yes, much of the informations and attitudes are outdated, but understanding that some behaviors are age appropriate and better to deal with at another time is invaluable. Additionally, some advice never gets old.
My younger child is now about to be 6, and I've misplaced my books, but I value the information enough to buy it again.
Helpful but outdated.......2007-01-10
The number of references to nose drops was kind of comical. The number of references to the mom staying home and the dad trying to make a man of his boy was less comical. Overall, I found the information very helpful, but I felt like I was getting advice from my grandma or something. Reading this in conjunction with "The Brat Stops Here" have helped me feel much better about the way my 6-year-old behaves. I don't know if I'll buy the book about Sevens.

Book Description
A Different Kind of Intimacy will bring together for the first time a collection of performance artist Karen Finley's texts, performances, short stories, essays, op-eds, art and photographs, creating a unique memoir of a woman whose life and career have embodied the urgent cultural conflicts of our time. The writings include text from the infamous performances that brought her to the Supreme Court in Finley vs. NEA, a battle that became a mainstay of the culture wars and which has made Finley an icon in the struggle for freedom of speech. Included in this volume will be the never before published, Obie Award-winning The American Chestnut for which she received a Guggenheim; such works as We Keep Our Victims Ready, A Certain Level of Denial, The Return of the Chocolate Smeared Woman, and an excerpt from her forthcoming film Shut Up and Love Me. Also appearing will be previously unpublished short stories, photos, artwork, and an essay on censorship. In 1998 Finley was named Woman of the Year by MS. magazine; she posed for Playboy the following year. She has appeared in numerous films including Philadelphia, and will soon be directing her own first feature film, Shut Up and Love Me, produced by Forensic Films. She has recorded albums including a collaboration with Sinead O'Connor. Finley is a regular on Politically Incorrect and can be seen giving her opinions on Exhale, a new show hosted by Candace Bergen on Oxygen. She will be hosting The Naked Players, a "nude Candid Camera" as well as Shock Video, both on HBO. Finley has written four books: Shock Treatment, Enough Is Enough, Living It Up, and Pooh Unplugged. "We need Finley: she doesn't duck the bullets, she keeps her eyes peeled on the artillery aimed at women, and she continues to push against her own boundaries as an artist" -- MS. Magazine

Hypocrisy, Paradoxical Oxymoron or Parody?.......2007-06-21
I have to admit enjoying Karen Finley's Collected Writings which were published as a kind of memoir. Frankly, during much of the time I spent reading the book, I really couldn't decide if she was actually serious or just pulling the reader's leg. I enjoyed some of her poetry the best, especially "The Black Sheep". It would be difficult for anyone not to be moved by hearing the tragic stories of dying friends. She was best when she was the most sensational. She reminded me of a newspaper Tabloid and their publishing priorities--"if it bleeds it leads." I felt most of her artwork was amatuerish. She came across to me as kind of a rebel being a rebel just to be a rebel. One of the most famous quotes included in her book is "Whenever I See a Rainbow in the Sky, I See an Angel Being Raped." She wanted so much to point out that women are only looked at as sexual objects, but the only way she could figure out to make that point was to prance around nude in front of her audience. I have to admit she was a very beautiful woman with a wonderful body that she wasn't afraid to show off in order to make her points about women's bodies being exploited. But isn't it a bit of a paradox to become famous by performing in the nude or covered only by some smeared chocolate when you are trying to convince people that looking at women only as objects of sexual pleasure is wrong. If she wasn't so good looking when dressed only in her birthday suit, she would never have become famous enough to appear in TIME magazine dressed only in smeared chocolate. She may have provided lots of much-needed press and publicity to art museums, but she is also a hypocrite and a very beautiful one at that. The book is still worth reading--just like Tabloids. It's also fun to ogle the pictures of her naked body. Some of them are not only erotic, funny, but they also make the reader hungry for a candy bar or two or even three. In fact that's the best part of the book and maybe why the cover of the book has a photograph by Annie Leibovitz of a nude woman wrapped around both the front and back? It's a fun read, a little warped, but worth dipping into. I only wish I'd actually attended one of her nude performances. I would gladly have paid for a front row seat. Maybe I missed her point?
Some old same old.......2005-06-24
If you want to hear a lot of whining from a grown woman, this is the book for you. If you are looking for thoughtful literature, don't buy this piece of trash. Can I have my money back?
Nothing Deeper than a Jerry Springer Confession.......2004-04-30
What has Finley really done for Feminisim other than perpetuate this idea of a molested angry female on the verge of tears?
Just another semi-biographic book from a women that can only talk about herself and what men have done to her.
If you want to feel sorry for yourself or hide it in fits of anger, read this book. She offers no solutions, and no resolution, because she ultimately cannot handle resolution. Without conflict and hate, she's a shell of a person and so is her writings.
In your face senator Helmes.......2001-02-12
I saw Karen Finley in Charleston SC years ago. I had no idea what to expect....I had never heard of her before. The tardy Ms. Finley entered the auditorium from the back, totally naked. I knew then that she was like no other person on earth. She yelled and screamed her stories, her anger , her pain....our pain....to the gods above. Through out the performance she gradually clothed herself until she ended the performance fully dressed. I was dumbfounded, changed...and I fully understood how her nudity was necessary to her art...to her connection with her audience. For years I search for information on this woman, hoping to see another performance....to again experience what I felt that night. Catharsis. I was thrilled when an internet search brought me here, to her memoirs. This book did not disappoint. It gave great insight into the life of this very strange, and gifted woman. Though everyone may not agree with her beliefs and politics, they have to admire her intelligence and strength. One suggestion Ms.Finley, get a website so people like myself can let you know how you've made a difference in their lives.R.Renn
The High Priestess of Confrontation, The Muse of Truth.......2000-12-07
forget what you think you know about karen finley, because unless you've actually been to one of her performances and/or read her essays, you don't know much. okay. so let's forget about the yams, the chocolate, the nudity, the naughty words and all of that. just for the space of this review, humor me. still with me? karen finley is amazing. she is the (unwilling) joan of arc of pop culture as we know it. she dared to deconstruct dysfunction, patriarchal power junkies, AIDS hysteria, sexism, homophobia....okay, you get the idea...and she tackled all these things, and so many more subjects, on a human level, on a confrontational level, with compassion and parody combined, with anger and love combined, espousing politically correct ideas in a very unpolitically correct voice during very PC times. while this book is not a "compilation", per se, it is a kind of experimental autobiography, with big chunks of finley's work interspersed throughout - sort of a show and tell exhibit in a book. it works. it's immensely, addictively readable, and quite user-friendly for such a confrontational artist. the only frustration i had with this work was the ending, which frustrated and disappointed me, though the discouraging ending could easily be yet another performance art prank served finley style.....

Book Description
Our understanding of the intricate nature of the immune response on both a cellular and molecular level has both contributed to and benefited from the work of immunopharmacologists. An increasing number of immunologists have become interested in agents which exert selective effects on the immune system. This has prompted the development of the subject of immunopharmacology which broadly addresses the effects of natural and synthetic substances on the immune response

But, as Telford afterwards used to say, very much depends on whether the man has got a head with brains in it of the right sort upon his shoulders. In London, the weak man is simply a unit added to the vast floating crowd, and may be driven hither and thither, if he do not sink altogether; while the strong man will strike out, keep his head above water, and make a course for himself, as Telford did.

poor edition of an interesting book.......2005-03-07
This is a very interesting book, but I can hardly recommend this edition. For some reason they did not include any of the illustrations of the original book. The lack of illustrations is very obvious, since the text refers to various illustrations, which are simply not included. In addition, the publishers did a very poor job of proofreading the text, leaving in numerous obvious errors, both of punctuation and misspelling. Also, NO additional information is provided for modern readers, in the way of notes, definitions of words that are no longer currently in use, etc. In short, this is a very poor edition of this book.
