Excellent, but in need of an update.......2001-07-25

This book was absolutely excellent for my two month stay in Switzerland. I was working during the week, so daytrips on the weekend were the ideal choice for me. This book gives excellent suggestions of places to visit and things to do while there, and the maps and travel information are priceless. Since it was last updated in 1999, however, some of the data is incorrect, but it never caused me any problems. More often than not, the outdated information just meant that things that were supposed to be closed on Sundays were now open, or places that supposedly didn't have information in English or online now did.

Also, I would disagree with the reviewer who said that Switzerland is expensive. It all depends on where you're from, how old you are, and what the exchange rate is. As a 25-year old law school student, discounts for people under-26 were abundant, and no one even asked for my student ID when I asked for the student price. Also, the dollar is remarkably strong in Europe at the moment, making most countries highly affordable. As a NY-native attending law school in DC, I found Switzerland to be very INexpensive. So, check for discounts and exchange rates before you go.

Delightful trips for all interests.......2000-05-20

This book includes a general map of Switzerland, with individual maps for the daytrips. One is given a short history of the area, how to get there, practicalities, accomodations, and where to eat before a description of the tour is given in each area. A rough idea of prices are given. Individual maps show route where one will be going. Bold print in the suggested tour allows for quick reference both to the map and other sights of interest. Tours are both scenic and museum, etc., oriented, depending on what the specific area offers. This book is well laid out for planning a trip, providing something for everybody. Includes index. Note: Switzerland is expensive!

I do not feel this book is as easy to access as a take along travel guide as I would have hoped. All the information is included, but in an "at a glance" fashion.

Very comprehensive list of train possibilities from every location. Not as much boat information. Not really useful for trip tourists, but maybe if you were going over for 6 months or longer to work there. Doesn't really include information on why you'd want to go to certain locations (hiking/food/castle/etc).

Chock full of great maps and information!!!.......2007-05-27

This book is a great resource for those planning a rail journey of Switzerland. There are country maps, region maps, and city maps. Every inch of railroad is covered in this book. The bus and boat coverage is less thorough however. The author does tell you where you can catch some of the more important Post bus routes. The author has also included links to the tourism websites of many of the cites mentioned. Most Swiss tourism websites are full of excellent information. Many smaller, off the beaten track towns are listed as well. Some hotel information is also included.

This book is mainly for those traveling by train or bus. It was not very helpful for traveling by auto although it did mention some things to see in planning routes.

We lived in Switzerland for two years and this was our bible - it covers every rail line and many postal and boat routes. It describes interesting sites all along the way so you can see that there is a Switzerland beyond Lucerne, the Bernese Oberland, Zurich, Gimmelwald and other standard tourist destinations. We found great out of the way museums, hikes etc from this book. I'm ordering the newest edition for my upcoming summer trip. We've worn our last edition out! This is a must if you travel by Swiss Pass and the fabulous Swiss train system.

Great book, too bad itï¿½s out of print........2002-12-26

My husband and I have always wanted to travel on the Glacier Express and he suggested that instead of making it a two day event in a week long trip, that we make traveling the train the whole trip. I didnýt see how we could turn an 8 hour train trip into a week of vacation. Fortunately, I found this book.

It starts as many guide books do with the essential travel information. It give you average temperatures and rainfall for given time of the year, the electricity requirements, customs, etc., etc.

The second section of the book is concerned with traveling by train. The third gives a country by country breakdown of travel hints, again it lists consulates and valuable tourist info.

But the real value of this book is the next section. It lists all the really great train journeys through the Alps. The wonderful thing about this book is that it covers the Alps, not just Switzerland. So not only to you get descriptions of the Swiss rail trips, but you also get descriptions of trips that go across country boundaries. So this book covers, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland. For each route, the book supplies you with the route, where to change trains, the time of travel, places to stay, places to eat and places to see. The places to stay, eat and see may need a little supplementation from another source, but the route info itself is worth the price of admission.

El libro de Aznar es un aporte no sólo para el conocimiento de los hechos recientes, sino también para todos aquellos que en estos días tienen que gobernar en un mundo complejo y contradictorio.

En lo ideológico, comienza por definirse como un liberal, como un liberal conservador, pero sustancialmente liberal, destacando el valor de la libertad, al que sólo debe limitar el estado de derecho y el rol que en este marco tiene el liderazgo político y la forma como trató de ejercerlo.

Un libro de plena actualidad, necesario para entender la realidad política y social de la España actual. Recomiendo su lectura. Este libro confirma que antes que un político, Aznar es un estadista.

Common sense welfare beats scientific justification.......2001-02-20

FIVE, or even six, stars for the argumentation, but I have given four stars only because it will take a fair amount of scientific knowledge and stamina to read. Rollin is well known in the animal welfare field. His argument, developed in repeated minute detail, is that scientists who experiment on animals are so closed off from reality, and have such a vested interest in deluding themselves that animals don't suffer, that they are the only people who can't see the blindingly obvious - that animals feel pain pretty much the same way that we do.

For scientists, and especially anyone dealing with animals in any way, I would consider this book mandatory reading. It counterbalances all the dry science about how animals work with a a good look at how they think.

For non-graduates it's too technical. Words like paradigmatic and ontological come thick and fast.

I have bought this book as an introduction to altered books and since then I cannot put it down. It is true that people who are experienced in the art of altering books may find it a little limited. But Bev Brazelton is such a talented artist! It is a yummy book for the eyes!
The book itself is devided is different parts showing different techniques from the most elementary ones to the more elaborated ones.
I truly recommand this book.
It is so inspiring!

Good beginner hands-on book.......2007-02-19

I've done almost no altered-book work, and I've done a bit more collage. I took this book out of the library as part of some research into paper art techniques.

This book's organization is straightforward. Brazelton starts by explaining the basic materials and supplies used, in an organized and detailed fashion, and then teaches one specific technique at a time. This method seems good for people who know very little about the art and like to learn by working hands-on with a specific set of instructions. The author is very encouraging.

A couple of minor criticisms: My enjoyment of the book was marred a bit because I just don't like the author's artistic style very much. I also found it irritating that Brazelton used the same basic approach over and over (multiple layers of color washes) on each segment. I wish the author had added at least a few photos of other artist's works so I could see some other ways to approach altered books.

Good introduction to succulents.......1998-11-23

Beautifully illustrated with photographs by the author, this book is a splendid introduction for those wanting to enter the wonderful world of succulents.

The book can really be divided in two parts. The first being concerned with an introduction to succulents and the basics required to grow, reproduce, set out etc. Much of the information here is brief but there is enough "meat" to ensure that anyone approaching succulents for the first time will succeed in developing a very attractive garden - the potential for which is amply illustrated in the colour photos.

The second part of the book is devoted to an A-Z guide of popular succulents. This is perhaps where the book falls down a little as "popular" depends on a variety of factors. As this book is written by a New Zealander who has obviously visited the western USA, "popular" refers to succulents popular in these locations. Nonetheless the guide does give the main families of succulents and is therefore an excellent start.

The book was a bit simplistic, much of the same information was covered in the New Hampshire Mandatory co parenting class. But it was still some very good advice.

Nothing ground breaking here but it's a good collection of what you probably should know.

I am a play therapist, author of "The Successful Divorce, In The Eyes of the Child" course and have taught parenting divorced for nine years. This is the book that says it all. The authors teach in clear logical manner how to co parent your children. They are sensitive to the pain both parents and children feel post divorce and teach how to proceed in parenting. I frequently use sections of their book in teaching to remind parents that they must still work together enough to meet children's needs. when i divorced two years ago, reasonably contentiously and with a four year old daughter, the best advice i got was to read this book. i did, with highlighter in hand, and found it absolutely invaluable. i continue to this day to consider it absolutely invaluable! such that, i just ordered a gift copy for my brother and his new wife, to help them with my niece and her co-parent. that gift brings the total i've purchased for others up to five. its an unfortunate reality that there will probably be more in the future, but the book helps immensely and so there will be gifts.

I went through a high-conflict divorce in Connecticut in 2004, complete with restraining orders, police, and the whole 9 yards. As I saw the divorce approaching, I researched a great deal of divorce/parenting literature on my own, hoping to find a framework of something my (soon-to-be) ex and I could agree to work with, and I found this book. I read it and gave a copy to my ex. I also found an divorce/custody attorney who would focus on our children's interests, and his very first recommendation was to get this book and see Dr. Thayer in her practice jointly with my ex.
I'm grateful I had the expertise of Dr. Thayer to help me let go of conflicts I had with my ex. The guiding principle of the book and her joint practice (which is called The Peace Program) is to transform a personal, contentious relationship with an ex into a business-like relationship focused on the children's welfare. In a high-conflict divorce, this is a very difficult objective -- conflict can be blinding and all-consuming -- but it is possible, and the energy is of course better spent on the children. The book outlines suggestions to facilitate parenting business, such as a weekly parenting phone call (a business call) and a dozen Golden Parenting Rules. In the end, after the parents extinguish their fighting, the children get their parents back, and a good deal of their childhood back, because the parents choose to work together as co-parents. Through the 18 months I've been using this book, I find myself living in various chapters of it, depending on the evolution of my divorce. As the children get older, new issues arise, and the book remains on the top shelf of my bookshelf, where my most useful books reside.

Very dissappointing .......2005-04-01

This promises to be something of a backstage look at the Grand Ole Opry, instead it's a more of a personal memoir with comments about country stars the author has known. While she writes quite a bit about Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones, Tex Ritter (hence the foreward is written by Tom & John Ritter, shortly before John's death), Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner, Bill Monroe, Loretta Lynn, and John Hartford, and a few others are pictured and briefly commented on (Marty Stuart, Stringbean, Ricky Skaggs, The Whites, etc.) there are scores of Opry stars that don't even merit a mention. And over 35 of the "over 100 photographs" in the book are exclusively of Leverett-Crew's family without a star in the picture! And that's not counting the hefty amount of pictures that are with stars that also picture family members. Too bad the author did not just make this a book a history of her father's career (Les Leverett, a famed country music photographer) instead of this effort.

I picked it up to thumb through and couldn't put it down. It's beautifully written, full of photos, and absolutely fascinating. You don't have to be a country music buff to enjoy this book. It has great stories of many others from Andy Warhol to John Ritter. I felt like the proverbial fly on the wall. It's a must have, if only for the history lesson, but it's so much more.
