Unrestricted energy.......2006-11-19
Bo Sullivan and the Turnpike are bundles of unrestricted energy. The New Jersey Turnpike shapes the state. The road is a triumph of function over form. It is the busiest toll road in the nation.
New Jersey is a machine in the garden. The nickname, the Garden State, is, in some respects, bizarre.
On the New Jersey Turnpike the patrons are treated like vagrants. The message is keep moving. The Turnpike was profitable from the beginning. It sold time and convenience.
The Pulaski Skyway has been dubbed America's first cosmic road.
To any student of culture, this book is a marvel.
The definitive history on the Turnpike.......2001-11-28
As a lifelong New Jerseyan who endured the "what exit" jokes by out-of-staters (Exit 12, now that you've asked), Rockland and Gillespie try to tackle the cultural significance of the loved and loathed New Jersey Turnpike. They cite the popular reference in the Simon & Garfunkel tune, "America," and stress that the Turnpike is one of the most heavily-traveled highways in the world.
What they do well is describe in entertaining detail the story on how and why the Turnpike was built (note: the secretive NJ Turnpike Authority did not cooperate with the authors when they were researching this book) and the many anecdotes about the road that bring new insights into New Jersey (and American) politics and history.
The authors make two main cultural arguments throughout the book:
The first one is how the negative opinion of New Jersey has been shaped over the years by travel on the Turnpike. Let's face it -- the Turnpike travels through the least attractive areas of the state. From the decayed industrial north to the straight, flat and boring stretches in South Jersey, the Turnpike is not a great public relations tool for the state of New Jersey. New Jersey is not all oil refineries (exit 12 & 13), huge megawarehouses (exit 8A) or bland suburban sprawl (exit 9 & 10), but since millions of people from around the globe have traveled on this road to or from Newark Airport or along the Northeast, they think that what they see along the Turnpike is typical to the Garden State (yes, we still have gardens).
Second, the authors' argue that the Turnpike was the ultimate expression of form over function -- an idea that reached its zenith in the mid-20th century. The road was built with efficiency and safety being its highest (and perhaps only) priorities and the roadbuilders did not consider aesthetics or the concerns of neighbors or private landowners when building or maintaining the road.
This book is a great and worthy complement to works like Robert Caro's The Power Broker or other works on famous roads like Rt. 66, Highway 1, the National Road (US Rt. 40), etc. You don't have to be a New Jersey-phile to enjoy this book!

A Lifesaver! Shelby knows her stuff!.......2006-01-21
I own twelve dogs, most of which are rescues and have a special set of needs in addition to the typical needs of dogs. Shelby's book has helped me help all of my dogs live a healthier, happier life. Her understanding of the needs of dogs, their natural, instinctive behaviors has enabled me to set up my home so that we all live in harmony . . . no dog fights, no destruction of property. Her training methods are kind and based on positive motivation. This is especially important for dogs that have a history of abuse and neglect. I even shared her book with the folks at my vet's office! Thank you Shelby!
Some really good advice.......2005-07-11
Within the first half hour of reading this book, I was able to apply a technique to our headstrong little puppy. She's smart and sometimes sweet, but very mouthy right now and very dominant. After performing a muzzle grab on her, as described by Ms. Marlo, she quit biting and started licking. It was like a miracle had occurred! Yeah, I've had to repeat the lesson a few times, but it seems that our little puppy is finally accepting that we're the pack leaders.
Ms. Marlo's other advice on training puppies and dogs also seems very sound. For example, it makes sense to me to use food as a motivator, at least at first, whereas other trainers say to use the dog's desire to please you as a motivator. I like her advice on using crates for housetraining and generally keeping your new pup out of trouble. Most of her tips on how to teach the basic commands seem right on. Even her suggestion that you use instructive commands instead of "no" all the time (eg, leave it, off, sit...) makes sense, although I find myself using "no" frequently.
I especially like her insights into dog behavior, based on their natural pack roles, and how you can use these insights to communicate with your dog her role in your pack.
I'm not sure I agree with everything she suggests, however. But I've read a number of books on dog training and dog behavior, and none agrees completely with another, and some disagree with each other vehemently. Folks, just read several sources and use your own common sense with your own situation. Be kind, be firm, and be consistent. I would suggest this book as one of several you should read.
Works great for the hard headed!.......2004-07-03
I just got a American Pit Bull Terrier puppy as a gift from my husband. I've always wanted one, but my experiance in dog trainning is limited to their wild far off cousins. I've never gotten to train a domesticated dog before, and I was very nervous because of everything I've heard about this breed. This book is WONDERFUL!!! Bella is the sweetest dog I've ever met or had, she's just very stubborn (as terriers are) and Shelby just goes through the psychology of the pack and everything so simpily and easily. Anyone can read this book, and have it work for them.
A MUST for dog owners.......2003-11-28
After having red various books on dog training I came across this one. It is clear and precise, but above all it works! Ms. Marlo not only seems to have an instinct and understanding for dogs but also a great way of relating some of her experience and knowledge to others.
Our very difficult and extremely aggressive puppy has been transformed to a well behaved, respectful and almost housebroken dog within just a few days.....
Thorough and Excellent Resource.......2003-06-21
A friend sent us this book when we first got our puppy and we used the techniques from day 1. The book is well written and easy to read. The stories about what worked for her star clients made the book interesting and entertaining! Most of all what an amazing impact it has had on our dog! She is exceedingly well-behaved for a 10 month old puppy and just passed her AKC Canine Good Citizen Test on the first try. I credit Shelby's techniques for our success!

A successful gift basket professional reveals her tricks of the trade in this bible of the business.
Customer Reviews:
Informative on a business level.......2007-08-31
Shirley George Frazier's strength seems to be her knowledge of the gift basket business, rather than her design style. The most creative and professional looking baskets in the book are from other contributors. All the "how to" pictures are black and white, with a section in the middle of the book showing the finished designs in color. I certainly got some good business information from the book, but I'd rather have had more pictures of the designs of Flora Brown, Elaine Essary, Lisa Schleicher, Marie Pessolano, and Marian Donnelly. I wish I had realized before I got the book that it would be more helpful in giving me an idea about basic basket construction (filler, stabilizers, etc.) than in giving me design ideas. Ms. Frazier has another book, How to Start a Home-Based Gift Basket Business, but it doesn't go into as much depth on putting the baskets together as this book does. This book does have very detailed pictures showing step-by-step how to put the basket together. A good book for a beginner, but not very helpful if you've done baskets before.
Gift Basket Designs That Spark Creativity.......2007-03-03
Shortly after starting a gift basket business, designers feel the need to come up new design ideas. Of course they had a few great ideas to start, but to keep their customers ever satisfied gift basket designers must continually introduce new ideas and themes. Shirley George Frazier, author of The Gift Basket Design Book, has solved this problem for even the most demanding designer.
The Gift Basket Design Book is like opening a treasure chest and discovering new baubles at every turn. She presents over 30 design ideas with step-by-step assembly instructions, explaining the rationale for each step, and best of all, suggesting other product and containers along the way to spark your creativity. And that's just half of the book.
As a gift basket designer for sixteen years I also appreciate the half of the book that recounts the history of gift baskets, identifies all the supplies, types of products and enhancements that professionals use. The part of this book that sets it apart from any would-be competitors, however, are the tips and facts that can save the unwary business owner discomfort and problems. One warning about spray painting unpainted containers outdoors while wearing gloves and goggles is simple, but not always apparent to designers.
No one explains these tips as clearly as Shirley Frazier does.
Whether you are a beginner or a veteran, you can learn something new in The Gift Basket Design Book by Shirley George Frazier. And your customers will be happy you did.
Informative and Helpful..........2006-11-10
While this book is informative and helpful, I find that much of the informtion is a bit redundant. I have one additional book from this author and although the format is a bit different, it does repeat itself from time to time. There are so many books available for those who wish to start a gift basket business, learn to construct a beautiful and well-balanced basket and for those who are really daring and wish to customize the basket or container with paints/embellishments before filling it. I must give kudos to Amazon for offering a good selection of the above. I did a local search first and it was a waste of gas and time. Most of our local bookstores carry one book (if any) in this genre.
Not what I expected.......2006-05-04
I didn't like the pictures of baskets in this book. Most of them were in black and white and really were not all that hot. The content of the book, however, was EXTREMELY helpful.
Basic.......2005-08-18
This book contains good info, but only on a VERY BASIC level. It's almost too basic. Not much new or innovative. If you've never made a basket or wrapped a package, then this is your book.

Book Description
John Lautner is recognized as one of the foremost architects who practiced at the height of the modern movement. In The Architecture of John Lautner, stunning photography and insightful text illuminate the work of this modern master. This revised and condensed reprint of the Rizzoli title of the same name outlines all of Lautner's residential projects and details his career from his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright to his status as one of the preeminent practitioners of mid-century modernism. The book includes extensive photographs of Lautner's spacious residential interiors that have never appeared in other publications.
Lautner's highly personal designs for homes are known for their poignant originality as well as their ties to Frank Lloyd Wright's theories of organic architecture. As a student of Wright's, Lautner continued his tradition but branched out–many of his designs, such as the Chemosphere and the Monsanto House, have become icons of southern Californian architecture in their own right.

The Architecture of John Lautner .......2006-02-28
Lauther has been able to utillize unbuildable sites to create rooms with beautiful views.
design that transcends decades.......2002-03-14
it is amazing to see how the designs of the mid 1900's seem so contemporary even to the present day. this book captures the designs via beautiful photography and commentary.
even the layman will be amazed to find that many of the buildings have been used in the media for many years. whether in movies or magazines they have been associated with the most contemporary designs of our time.
highlights this architects mastery of a typical material palette of concrete, wood, and steel.
Lautner the master of panoramic windows.......2000-06-09
This book is really beautiful, the pictures are of great value. If the architecture can be said as to be a little "out of fashion" (I mean architecture of the fifties), it is anyway wonderful and inspiring to see such beautiful house. there is a lot of wonderful pictures of all the major houses build by lautner during his career. the only things that can be missed in this book is that there is no drawings but anyway, I really believe it's a good book.
A F.L. Wright Disciple Gets His Full Measure of Recognition.......2000-03-24
In the few months since I purchased this beautifully illustrated and impecabbly written monograph, John Lautner seems to have become Hollywood's favorite posthumous architect. This month's Vanity Fair features a screenwriter and his wife showcasing their restored Lautner masterwork while virtually every fashion spread in the same issue has one emaciated model or another posing, pouting and preening against a Lautner structure. This wonderful book travels Lautner's career arc from Wright disciple employing the tools and traits of the Master to the emergence of his own distinctive blend of wood, steel, concrete and location that, ultimately, bears little resemblance to his roots at Taliesin. As the text makes clear, Lautner shared Wright's prickly self-absorption and relentless self-philosophizing. However, as the book wanders from one beautifully executed commission to the next, you end up endorsing his sense of self. Like the best of Wright, each structure seems to organically emerge from its site to envelop the owners in a beautifully scaled and very human dwelling. A worthy tribute to John Lautner's artistry and vision.
Lautner Illuminated.......1999-12-25
This picture book of Lautner's work provides a new perspective to the innovative work of the architect. Although many of the buildings are captured in other publications, the images are different than anything out there. Reproduction quality is excellent, as well as composition.
Only way to improve this one is with a virtual tour. It would also be nice if the industry acknowledged this superior architecture - this is art, not just structure, and its truly American architecture. Current architectural trends are decidedly un-American; from Mediterranean, Spanish revivalism to Victorian - its all big time popular, but pure facade when compared to directly to American, European, and Asian modernism.
...
Book Description
Space age architecture American architect John Lautner (1911-1994) is responsible for some of the most original buildings of the space age and, indeed, the 20th century. The residences he designed in the Los Angeles area, including the Chemosphere House and the Silvertop, are synonymous with the hopes and dreams of an entire era. Characterized by sweeping rooflines, glass-paneled walls, and steel beams, his buildings displayed a combination of fantasy and minimalism, often integrating water and incorporating surrounding landscapes. Lautner always placed great importance on the relationship between humans, space, and nature.

Most books on Lautner (my father) are out of print and expensive. This one is a great small book that makes a terrific gift or handy guide. Some new pictures, some different buildings from Campbell-Lange's other Lautner book.

Book Description
In 1937, then apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright, John Lautner (1911-15) came to Los Angeles to supervise construction of the Sturgess Residence. Two years later he established hiw own office in Hollywood, building a house for himself with Henry Russel Hitchcock called "the best house by an architect under 30 in the US", the first in a long line of unique buildings. Never part of the architectural establishment, John Lautner has always practised what he called
<
>. Among the best-known examples are the Malin Residence (Chemosphere), the Reiner Residence (Silvertop), the Arango Residence in Acapulco, and the Elrod Resdience in Palm Springs. His work ranges from exciting but low-cost houses to finely crafted large residences, to restaurants and educational facilities.
Customer Reviews:
Marvelous resource and record..........2004-06-08
This book is really a treasure, with virtually all of the text and commentary provided by Lautner himself. A wonderful resource for anyone interested in understanding Lautner and his work.
The photographs, plentiful, are not quite as striking and colorful as in later books (especially the Hess/Weintraub book), but are interesting as most seem to be roughly contemporary with each building's completion, probably the original documentation photography, usually showing the original furniture and decor. (This is also the reason that a few buildings, like the Harvey House, have no interior photos--Lautner was not happy with certain decorative decisions and would not permit their publication.) This book and the Hess/Weintraub book together allow a fascinating "then/now" look at many buildings, showing how well they have adapted and survived changing styles and tastes.
Furthermore, this is the most comprehensive of the books on Lautner, including a great deal more buildings than the others and also a complete list of works, both built and unbuilt, sometimes with drawings. Buildings are also covered in more detail, with plans and sections provided for each.
A note on the older/hardcover editions: some may have binding errors, such as groups of pages out of place or upside down (the title is also upside down on the spine), but these errors may be unique to just a few copies, I'm not sure. Also, I know there is at least one photo that is slightly different in my hardcover copy than in the paperback--same view, different lighting and furniture.

Lautner, 1911-1994: Disappearing Space (Basic Art)
ASIN: 1568981422 |
Book Description
John Lautner was the quintessential Los Angeles architect. His houses, many perched on hillsides with sweeping glass walls overlooking the valley below, are icons of the drama and exuberance of the best of Southern California architecture.
Born in 1911, Lautner apprenticed to Frank Lloyd Wright before establishing his own office in Hollywood in 1939. Among his best-known projects are the Malin Residence (Chemosphere), the Reiner Residence (Silvertop), and the Elrod Residence in Palm Springs (seen in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever).
Designed with Lautner before his death in 1994, this oversized monograph is the only book available on the imaginative and exciting work of this modern master. It includes almost fifty houses, each described in detailed drawings and lavish photographs, as well as an interview in which Lautner discusses the most important influences on his work and his eccentric views on architecture.
Customer Reviews:
A treasure........2001-12-05
Any Lautner enthusiast will be captivated by this book. It covers more buildings than any of the others, and includes Lautner's own comment on each, making it an invaluable record of Real Architecture.
Most of the photos in this book appear to have been taken shortly after the buildings were completed (and some during construction), so it makes a great companion to "The Architecture of John Lautner," which has mostly rescent photographs. Together, the books give a facinating "the and now" contrast, and demonstrate the timeless quality of Lautner's work.
web page problem.......1999-04-09
I have no idea why "Therese Thau Heyman" review of world war two posters is on John Lautner's book page. Also, one of your two reviews is listed as refering to an out-of-print edition, rather unusual since this single book just came out rather recently
Lautner's work defined post-war space age architecture........1998-07-08
Lautner's designs defined post-war architecture; bold, shaking off the conventions of the past and looking towards the future. Think of George Jetson--Lautner would have designed his house. If you drove a car with fins and it looked like a rocket, you would certainly park it in the driveway of a Lautner designed home. His designs made use of the new materials that came out of World War II stainless steel, cast concrete and aluminum. He designed houses perched on the hilltops around Los Angeles, with wide expanses of glass and wild rooflines. His commercial designs included restaurants, schools and municipal buildings. Lautner's style is distinct--his structures stand out from the rest. Buy this book! It's a great retrospect of his work, loaded with fine photography and commentary. Put this one on your coffee table!
A great retrospect of one of America's greatest architects........1997-10-28
John Lautner, who passed away in 1994, designed some of the most innovative and daring buildings of post-war America. For many, his work is among the greatest statements to the the California lifestyle of the 1950's and 60's--bold, shaking off the past and looking to the wide-open future. Lautner made use of cast concrete, steel and glass to create dynamic stuctures that few architects or clients dare conceive today. Think Lautner, think Jetsons. This book shows us his work with outstanding photographs from the 1940's through the 70's and is peppered with Lautner's comments on the various projects. Whether you're an architect or a fan of the space age, this is one book that you're sure to leave on the coffee table!

Lautner, 1911-1994: Disappearing Space (Basic Art)

Taschen
John Lautner learned architecture through hands-on-working experience rather than through classic academic training. He wanted ongoing change and passionate devotion. In 1933 he joined Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West. Later, with his own office in Los Angeles, he became the only one of Wright's pupils who not only adopted the master's ideas but developed them further. For 50 years Lautner experimented with new methods of construction and with inventive formal departures, and of his 188 designs no fewer than 113 were built, most of them private houses. The sheer daring of these designs stunned his contemporaries, and remains stunning now. Many of his buildings, such as the celebrated Chemosphere, a home positioned atop a single concrete column built above Los Angeles in 1960, came to be seen as the symbols of a new architecture of limitless possibilities.

Curvaceous Concrete Castles!.......2004-01-16
I would have given this book 4 stars except that it is written in more than one language which makes the book a bit harder to follow. But there are lots of nice photos of Lautner's homes, except for 2 of them which look like they where done with a cheap digital camera and printed on a xerox machine! I cannot complain about the price though.
John Lautner-The Big Series.......2000-03-28
The large color photo's in this book are wonderful, but unfortunately, there is not as much information on the architect and the individual projects he worked on, that there are in the other 2 Lautner books I have Purchased ("John Lautner- Architect", and "The Architecture of John Lautner". Also this book is written in three languages and therefore the layout is a little confusing. If you are a huge Lautner fan like I am, you will still enjoy the book, and considering the cost is less than 1/2 the price of the other 2 I mentioned (unless you purchase the softcover edition) I consider it a great coffee table bargain.

Customer Reviews:
A fascinating read.......2004-01-28
Sir Sidney was a wonderful man and this is a fitting tribute to his remarkable life.
The definitive biography of "Mr Manchester".......2001-08-20
Since Sir Sidney Hamburger passed away in July 2001, Bill Williams' work will become the definitive biography of the man the Anglo-Jewish community called "Mr Manchester." Virtually nothing of significance happened in the Manchester Jewish community from 1945 to 2000 without Sidney Hamberger's personal involvement, surely a unique record in any major diaspora Jewish community. In addition, Hamburger was a successful businessman, outstanding local politician and farsighted health services planner and administrator. Bill Williams, doyen of the historians of Anglo-Jewry, has provided a masterful biography and fascinating record of post-war Jewish life developing, expanding and fragmenting after the damage and hardship of World War II.
A welcome contribution to Judaic studies........2000-07-05
Sir Sidney Hamburger achieved a substantial role in Manchester, the City of Salford and the North-West region, England as chairman of the Planning and Finance Committees of Salford City Council, leader of the Labour Group on the City Council, and Mayor of Salford during 1968-69, as well as playing a leading role in the post-war reconstruction of his city. Sir Sidney Hamburger And Manchester Jewry is the story of a remarkable politician and community leader who was also deeply involved in the Jewish community's Zionist movement through the massive social and political upheavals of the post-war years. He derived his idealism from an Orthodox Judaism to which he was strictly committed. An outstanding biography of a provincial Jewish leader, Sir Sidney Hamburger And Manchester Jewry is a superb study of leadership in provincial Anglo-Jewry, an informative exploration of the collective identity of a Jewish general born in Britain to parents of Eastern European origin, and a welcome contribution to Judaic studies reading lists and library collections.
