3 out of 5 stars only good since there are few alternatives.......2006-08-11

The first 10 pages are great to read in the book store. The rest of the book is not that great. I only bought this book because I was going to Peru and Bolivia for 3 weeks (just returned) and didn't want to carry around two books. For that purpose it was fine and there isn't a recently published alternative. If you are traveling for longer I would recommend buying separate country books as you travel and discarding them as you leave a country. Or consider the slightly larger South American Handbook. Often the two books read verbatim but the larger guide had more information on Peru and Bolivia even though it also included the other SA countries. This book has glossy pages and pretty pictures. These are nice features while browsing in the bookstore but just mean extra weight while traveling.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly planned guidebook. Nice pictures though........2006-05-10

I'd had a quick flip through the first few pages at a bookstore, and since I was only visiting those 3 countries, I bought it for it's convenient size/weight. Oh and at the time it seemed pretty informative and thorough.

Unfortunately on the first day of my trip when I arrived in La Paz, I quickly discovered otherwise. First I couldn't find ANY information on the valley of the moon, save for a barely-there mention at the end of some paragraph on Tihuanaco.
Then there were hardly any cafe/restaurant listings and it's always nice to know where's good to go for some specific types of food (and the previous reviewer said there weren't too many hostal listings either. good thing we had our accom. sorted out beforehand).
It would also have been a lot more helpful if there was more background information on destinations and historial buildings. And a lot less annoying if they placed the map of Old Quito next to Old city guide, instead of having to flip back and forth between pages.
To top it off, a Peruvian guide who's had 7yrs of tour experience in Bolivia/Peru pointed out that a lot of the book's prices were pretty outdated for a 2005 publication.
Overall, I have to say it was a poorly planned/written handbook.

Met quite a few people with "Footprint South America", and they said it's probably the most complete and up-to-date guide out there. Had a look at LP's "South America on a Shoestring" along the way, and even though it's supposedly only OK, it was definitely more informative than "Footprint Peru, Bolivia & Ecuador". Get those books if you don't mind the bulkiness!

1 out of 5 stars Not for Backpackers or anyone else.......2005-08-29

Although this book is supposedly specifically for Backpackers, it is printed in large type on heavy, glossy paper with lots of big color photos, all of which just add bulk. The venerable South American Handbook, also from Footprint, weighs not much more and covers the whole continent. This new book is also short on info ... only 8 accomodations listings in La Paz, vs. about 50 in the SA Handbook. And there is no listing at all for Iquitos, one of Peru's largest cities, or Cajamarca, one of the historically most significant. I have used the SAH extensively, and thought this new book would be at least as informative for the three countries covered .... what a disappointment. Cannot recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great look at life with a bookie.......2004-02-24

Very entertaining book that details the family life of a bookie and his two sons (one of whom narrates the book). Interesting dichotomy between the son (now a professor at NYU) and his father who left school after 4th grade but had a Ph.D from the school of hard knocks. Dialogue between the family members is especially memorable.

            5 out of 5 stars an elegant memoir by a first-rate writer.......1999-05-29

Sidney Offit is a writer's writer. In this elegant memoir of his father the bookie, Offit has evoked the sense and sensibility of his Baltimore childhood and his father's shady dealings with a fresh and often surprising grace. It's a great read for the details and texture of time and place, but it's also a truly fine piece of writing. A very under-appreciated book by a writer who really should have written something great by now, and perhaps he still will.

                      Book Description

A gardener-friendly guide to growing roses.

Old-fashioned roses are cherished by gardeners for their timeless beauty, strong fragrance and fascinating history. Growing these roses -- along with their hybrids -- offers gardeners an opportunity to bring history to life. It is enormously gratifying to know that the roses blooming in one's garden were first cultivated by the Empress Josephine or were originally used to cover Cleopatra's bed.

Old-fashioned and David Austin Roses communicates the pure romance of old fashioned roses while demystifying the process of growing them. Contents include:

Each section of the book is organized by species and near hybrids. A concise history introduces the cultivars along with a short description that includes date of origin, growing requirements and interesting historical facts. Straightforward advice for planning and growing includes practical tips for feeding, watering, mulching, deadheading, cutting, pruning and minimizing the effects of pests, diseases and cold weather.

There are landscaping instructions for borders and beds, containers, groundcover, rose shrubs, hedges, the woodland garden and climbers. Finally, a rose cookbook includes recipes for creating such ancient concoctions as rose oil/perfume, rose and rhubarb syrup and rose brandy.

Old-fashioned and David Austin Roses is an accessible and essential reference for novice and experienced gardeners.

I agree with most of the other reviewers - this book tells it like it is without being terribly crude or rude. There are some things mentioned that not every doctor will agree with (the risks of soft cheese, microwaves, hair dye, etc). However, early in the book, Kimes informs readers that doctors are different, just as all women are different. I enjoyed the empathy/sympathy about the fright of bleeding during pregnancy - especially if you've already had one (or more) miscarraige. I bought this book before my 1st miscarriage and just skimmed the part about bleeding and the fear of miscarriage. Then I had one and got pregnant again within 2 months. That pregnancy also ended in miscarriage. When I got pregnant the 3rd time, I read the section about bleeding during pregnancy being normal, but terribly scary for those who've suffered miscarraige. It reassured me that all women have some fear of miscarriage, but once you've been there, done that, your fear is greatly magnified! I'm in my 18th week now and still enjoying the book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book... for Anyone who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed sometimes........2007-09-08

If you understand humor you will definately get this book. If you always wake up in a good mood and think being pregnant is the best thing that has ever happened to you... DONT BUY IT. This book is not for the cheerleader type who is always smiling. I LOVE THIS BOOK. It is a realistic look at pregnancy without the "being pregnant is a wonderful gift" outlook. I love my child. I am glad to have my child and having a child is a gift. What you have to go through to get the child is not always all roses. This book addresses that with an unyielding sense of humor and makes you realize that you might not be the only one who appreciates the gift (or light) at the end of the miserable experience tunnel but not necessarily the experience itself. I think this book really helped me deal with issues I was having with a rough pregnancy and made me feel better about everything.

This book is the most helpful pregnancy book that I have come across. I like it because it doesn't take it self too seriously and it makes me laugh when I am miserable. This is now going to be the book I get anyone who tells me they are pregnant.

4 out of 5 stars A humorous look at a special, yet stressful, event........2007-07-24

I am in my third pregnancy after a space of time. I picked up Joanne Kimes' book because the title was catchy and I wanted a different sort of pregnancy book. This one delivered exactly what I expected.

When I was dealing with my first (who is now a fifteen year old), most of the books on the market were serious, this is what's going to happen to you during That Special Time. Yes, there were "discomforts", but it should all pale next to the fact that you are going through a miracle! Thank goodness that the current slew of books now offer a more lighthearted take on That Special Time-- that yeah, it's a miracle, but it's ok to not feel that it is during the whole nine months.

Joanne Kimes gives a month-by-month format, about symptoms that usually happen (many of which happened to her), and ways to deal with them. Some may work, some are just for laughs, and you may have to find your own way of coping. The narrative is very chummy, girlfriend to girlfriend tone, that may be irritating to some, but what I found comforting and nice.

The reason for the four stars: This is one woman's experience with one pregnancy (and a miscarriage that she endured before her daughter). While she does include information about symptoms and conditions that she did not experience (and is open about the fact that she's talked to others about their experience), this is not a end-all, be-all book that will answer all of your questions or give you all options when it comes to pregnancy and birth. There's little to no information about alternative birthing because the author went to a hospital and saw an OB/GYN-- again, writing from her experience.

Frankly, no book I've read (and I've read many of the pregnancy books) can offer that. So if you are considering this purchase, please keep in mind that you may want to also pick up other pregnancy books (Ms. Kimes gives a lovely resource list in the back of this book). Another good book (albiet more serious) is What to Expect When You're Expecting. This book helps you laugh while you learn that you aren't alone in feeling what you feel and experience-- and it's ok to laugh.

In Pregnancy Sucks for Men, the hilarious follow-up to Joanne Kimes' Pregnancy Sucks, the author and her husband, Jeff, tell it like it is and show men how they can help out without doing the chore wrong; understand and cope with their wives' emotional rollercoaster rides; and duck for cover when the mood swings are aimed at their heads.

Prescriptive and hilarious, Pregnancy Sucks for Men enables the father-to-be to:

                    • Avoid getting puked on - now that his wife has a superhuman sense of smell
                    • Offer and prepare the right foods when the woman of his dreams turns into a frightening hungry beast
                    • Woo his wife into bed with romance, good timing, and by getting the housework done

Arranged in a convenient, month-by-month format and broken up by guy-on-the-street quotes, Pregnancy Sucks for Men is the one pregnancy book a man will proudly read for himself.

This book was hilarious and the title was funny enough to sucker my husband into reading it. Recommended!

2 out of 5 stars It Takes All Kinds.......2007-07-25

I did review Pregnancy Sucks, and found it a bit humorous. While in the bookstore I had also taken a look through Pregnancy Sucks for Men.

Mind you, in the other review I mentioned that this was one woman's personal story through one pregnancy. This is the flipside, her husband's story. And... well, if my husband had been anyone who needed this kind of advice, my pregnancy would suck as well.

I don't know if the fact that I don't have a Y chromosome (and therefore couldn't "get" the humor) or that I wasn't in a receptive mood... but this really wasn't all that funny. Husband must humor the pregnant wife, husband must be given a clue about what all is going on, husband must smile and nod at his wife's antics. Give me a break, wasn't this stuff covered in the old Honeymooner's episodes? How many years ago?

I know my husband would be offended by this book. But hey-- there are tons of people out there who may enjoy what really turned me off, and if they learn something out of it, then bully for them. While I did enjoy Joanne's book, Jeff's was left at the bookstore. My advice is to actually take a peek inside and decide if its humor is for you.

5 out of 5 stars this book is awesome.......2007-05-06

I was my first child when given this book as a gift. It is the perfect book for a guy who has a hard time reading the same books your wife is reading (what to expect, girlfriends guide) because those were all written for the female. This book speaks in guy terms and is a humorous (yet accurate) approach towards dealing with pregnancy. I have passed on my copy to other friends and have purchased many copies for friends who are expecting babies. This is a great read!

                      1 out of 5 stars Ummm...yeah. .......2007-04-20

"Your wife might take a dump on the delivery table"...is just one of the great sentences in this horrible book. Oh yeah...and if the doctor cuts her, don't worry, this book tells her just to get a "happy husband stitch". Nevermind that lovemaking will be incredibly painful for her....!! Oh, unless you have a c-section, in which case it will just be your hormones to deal with.

                      What a terrible book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Therapy.......2006-12-28

When my wife was enduring some very un-funny complications (near tragic), this very funny (and informative) book was the emotional medicine I needed in staying the course as the rock of support. Until I read this, it was very difficult to find reason to laugh.

Collected from Emily Carr’s private and public writings, these previously unpublished pieces reveal the outspoken artist at her most forthright. Expurgated sections from Carr’s journals detail her anguished meditations on her spiritual mission, musings about Native culture and the white community’s reaction to it, and thoughts about her family. Her groundbreaking 1913 “Lecture on Totems”, her first recorded writing on Native art and people, is also included, as are some of her most fascinating letters to friends and colleagues.

Award-winning author and cultural critic Susan Crean gathers previously unpublished writings from Emily Carr's journals, notebooks, and epistles, as well as 42,000 words from Carr's previously published journals for inclusion into Opposite Contraries: The Unknown Journals Of Emily Carr And Other Writings. An absorbing and eclectic collection of discourse, the entries range from Carr's father's no-nonsense rendition of the facts of life, to the complete text of Carr's 1913 "Lecture on Totems" concerning Native imagery and Native people, Opposite Contraries is highly recommended -- especially for students of the life and work of Emily Carr, who although best known as an extraordinary painter, was also the author of seven quite popular and critically praised books.
