        Book Description

Florence is one of Italy's most extraordinary cities. Rich with the world's most important art and architecture, and with shopping that rivals most larger cities, Florence is the second-most popular destination in Italy. The newest in Rizzoli's Italian cities guidebook series created in collaboration with the International Herald Tribune, Florence in Detail provides the seasoned traveler information on well-known cultural and commercial points of interest, as well as off-the-beaten-path treasures to let one experience the city as natives do. Through seventeen walking tours and in-depth Focus sections, Florence in Detail takes the traveler to familiar sites, but offers alternative itineraries as well as introducing the reader to lesser-known sites that are extraordinary. Within each itinerary, Rizzoli has singled out one site that is particularly important or noteworthy. Identified with a red sticker, the reader can easily find Rizzoli's favorite site in every chapter. Six itineraries to small towns just outside Florence are described, including Fiesole and Impruneta. A "Best of" chapter, identifies Florence's best pastry shops, best markets, and other venues of interest to the traveler.

4 out of 5 stars Not What One Expects from Rizzoli!.......2003-12-15

When it became known that Rizzoli and the International Herald Tribune were collaborating on a series of guidebooks to Rome, Venice, and Florence, I had great hopes. Alas, while this (and the other city offerings) are adequate, they fail to break new ground by providing useful information not already available from other sources, including the Internet.

The visitor to Italy minimally requires at least three types of information: Sites and Attractions; Lodging; and Food. Addiitionally, rampant consumerism also mandates information on Shopping.

The In Detail series touches all these bases, but most of the detail falls in that first category-- Tourist Attractions. In the latter two (or three) categories, In Detail provides thumbnail information on lodging choices, restaurants, shops, etc., but there are other books which concentrate primarily on food/lodging, and these cover those important decisions in greater detail.

What I found particularly disappointing is the graphic design of the maps, which should have been this series strongest point. Instead, too many green numbered sites seem lost in the fold of the pages or disappear into the greenery of the map. Finding a particular location sometimes feels like an all-green version of "Where's Waldo?"-- you know that numbered spot is somewhere on these pages, put where, dammit, where? Suffice it to say that because of poor graphics, the maps are very disappointing and difficult to use. And far below what one expects from Rizzoli, the renowned purveyor of high quality art books!

Another less critical cavil is that the overall quality of the photographs is noticeably uneven. Some are typical tourist bureau publicity shots, while others seemed to have been taken by your average disposable camera tourist . The composiiton, color quality, lighting, etc., leave much to be desired, and a glance at the photo credits would seem to indicate that in many instances poor snapshots instead of professional photographs were indeed utilized.

In summary then, as an entry into the "One Guidebook" race, this series competes with Cadogan, Eyewitness, Fodor's, Frommer's, Access, Let's Go, etc., offering much of the same information-- some new, some quite familiar. None are perfect; you pay your money, you make your choice.

At the same time, if you plan on staying in Florence (or Venice or Rome) for more than a few nights, then you might also want to seek out the more specialized guides, such as Duncan Petersen's "Charming Small Hotels" or Sandra Gustafson's "Cheap Sleeps" and "Cheap Eats," Faith Heller Willinger's "Eating in Italy," or Emily Miller's "Food Lovers Guide to Florence." These specialized guides are definitely worth considering-- and provide much more information to help you decide where to eat and sleep. (And Gustafson's maps are in legible black and white).

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2005-06-05

A few years back I worked in a pet store in Maine where this book was sold. Interested I read it during my lunch breaks and fell in love with it. It's SUCH an excellent book. It's wonderful to find a book that encourages and even stressed the need to THINK before you get a puppy and just any puppy. I now work at a vet's office and I recommend this book any and everytime I get a chance. I even had a client tell me today that it did help with their decision on what kind of new dog they wanted to get. There's also a fantastic section in there on the proper and improper places to get a new dog. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for all dog lovers........1999-08-06

As my son says, "The best part about the book was the puppies!!!" This wonderfully informative, entertaining book covers all the basics of choosing a puppy or even an older dog. "Before you Buy That Puppy," is filled with pictures, tips and personal anecdotes.

Wrede addresses the issues of learning about your selected breed, how to recognize a healthy puppy, and where to find it. She devotes a lot of material to choosing between a puppy and grown dog. We have all heard about full shelters because animals were chosen, not by the owner, but as a gift. Consequently, Wrede writes extensively on matching puppies or dogs to families with young children, single owners, and the elderly, based on size, temperament, breed, and energy levels.

"Before You Buy That Puppy," also provides excellent introductory material to various breeds. With the basics provided, and the resources in the back of the book, it is easy to choose the breed that is just right for any dog lover.

Furthermore, the book includes chapters about purchasing puppies from long-time professional breeders, backyard breeders, pet stores, and puppy mills. A section also discusses dogs chosen from animal shelters. Having adopted a beautiful Brittany Spaniel from a shelter five years ago, I was delighted to see the information. In addition, her section on warnings clued me into the problem my own Brittany has recently developed. It was quite a relief to read that my dog is suffering from nothing more serious than moving too often. Such informative tidbits make the purchase of book for any dog lover worthwhile.

Wrede also includes a chapter about services that train dogs to help the disabled. As my son stated, "They actually don't make a profit off of the dogs they train! I think that's pretty generous of them." Some of these dogs are also available for adoption and breeding.

Reading this book should not just be restricted to those thinking of buying a new puppy. Wrede's excellent writing style teaches, informs, and caution with taste, fun, and grace.

My teenager wrote, after finishing the book, "I've always wanted a puppy and now I know a lot more about and will be better prepared to try to convince my mom to save another one from the humane. Now I think I need to read her other book, which is about caring for a puppy." Two paws up for this fantastic romp!

I am a museum educator and ordered this book to help me plan a class on paper engineering. I have found the directions well written and the illustrations clear and simple to follow. The projects are appropriate for a range of abilities and there are a number of beautiful examples of ways to take the simpler techniques further. Some require a steady hand on an exacto knife and others merely need scissors, but I have been very impressed with the book thus far.

I ended up giving this book as a gift to my 10 year old nephew. He enjoys it immensely and keeps asking for more. The patterns look very realistic and are very active when unfolded.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book but I was a bit disappointed .......2006-12-20

This is a very nice book and has some great basic instructions; however, I bought the book strictly because I wanted the pattern and instructions for the dove featured on the cover. It wasn't included in the book, which seems strange to me: not including the complete pattern for your cover picture.

                Book Description

In the mid 1920's a teacher at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago had a vision to provide students and instructors with a textbook that would introduce them to the artistic legacy of not only Europe, but of the entire globe. In 1926, Harcourt Brace and Company published that vision - ART THROUGH THE AGES. Since that time, Helen Gardner's vision has been the leader in educating students about the artistic legacy of the world. For the past 75 years, ART THROUGH THE AGES has defined the introductory art history course. The intention of this classic, in Helen Gardner's words, has been "to introduce the reader to certain phases of art, architecture, painting, sculpture, and the minor arts from the remote days of the glacial age in Europe, through successive civilizations of the Near East, Europe, America, and the Orient, to the twentieth century." Now, as we begin a new millennium, we do so with the eleventh edition. This text is more accessible and easier to read for students, but does not compromise the richness of the Gardner tradition.

While I give credit to the goal and objectives of this book-- teaching your children about good decision-making, working as a team, self-esteem, self-sufficiency-- the bible references can be a little hard to swallow for the secular parent who's homeschooling their child not for religious reasons, or just wants to use the materials offered in this book. If you can't stomach comments in the 'spiritual habits' chapter such as 'The Bible is clear that homosexuality is a perversion'(with the scripture refernces to prove it) or a Life Skills checklist of whether everyone has their own bibles (despite the quick comment earlier to letting your kids 'study' other religions if they're curious) , then you may not want to contribute to the royalty check the author will receive from purchase of this book.

                5 out of 5 stars a must read!.......2006-08-04

I just got this book and cannot put it down -- Christine offers such EXCELLENT, easy to implement, practical ideas for teaching kids the everyday skills they need to get through life. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars This Book Has A Christian Perspective.......2003-12-19

It is important for buyers to know that this book has a decidedly Christian perspective, something that I did not cull from the descriptions, the reader reviews or the table of contents. There are bible quotes throughout including a whopper on page 248 "The Bible is clear that homosexuality is a perversion. For scripture study see..." The resources listed in the index are largely materials written by Christian groups. This book was not my cup of tea. For others it may certainly be what they are looking for but buyers should be aware of this book's Christian leaning.

                5 out of 5 stars A great resource!.......2002-12-29

This is a great resource for parents who want to teach their children what they'll really need to know. Everything from finances to cooking to simple repairs to hygeine is included...and for ALL ages! It's a book I refer to often!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and practical information!.......2002-06-05

I had the chance to meet the author of this book at a recent homeschool conference and was blown away by her practical ideas! This woman is not big on ideology or theory...she gets down to the practical matters at hand. Yeah for her! You will love this book if you are looking for ways to involve your children in the real world classroom.

                Book Description

Fitting Paul Klee's extraordinary oeuvre into book form is certainly a complex endeavor--Klee's diverse body of work is always opening itself up to new interpretations, and has escaped classification under the aegis of any particular style, group, or movement. This monograph achieves this feat by offering Klee in all his uniqueness, never attempting to subject the artist and his work to one interpretation. Here we see Klee's organically developed and open-ended art, which sought inspiration everywhere and in turn inspired so many in all areas of the arts. Fairytale lyricism and grotesque satire, tender jesting and very real horror, profound mysticism and sober romanticism all coexist in Klee's images. These works radiate a variety and creative energy that is rarely seen in such profusion. Paul Klee: Life and Work presents a comprehensive selection of paintings and other images, documented in nearly 500 color and black-and-white images, alongside essays that explore the artist's life and offer surprising insights into his work.

5 out of 5 stars The best intro to Klee.......2007-04-08

This book, a catalogue for an exhibit held at the MOMA, is the best general publication in English on Klee's work. Beautiful reproductions, clear chronologically organized text, it successfully answers the challenge of summing up the career of this giant of XXth century art. It is getting harder and harder to find, so if one can get their hands on it, it is an opportunity not to be lost.

                            Book Description

The reign of the North Welsh king Gruffudd ap Cynan (1075-1135) marked the culmination of a century of rapid social and political change. A product of three cultures (Welsh, Irish and Scandinavian), Gruffudd faced a Wales divided by Norman incursion and dynastic rivalry; his re-creation of his kingdom saw him acting on the wider (and often deadly) stage of Anglo-Norman politics, and surviving where more `traditional' Welsh rulers failed. His reign encouraged a new growth in Welsh literature and creativity, and is often looked upon as a literary `golden age'. This collaborative biography analyses key aspects of the career and context of this remarkable king. Dr K.L. MAUNDteaches in the School of History and Archaeology, University of Wales, Cardiff. Other contributors: DAVID MOORE, C.P. LEWIS, DAVID E. THORNTON, K.L. MAUND, JUDITH JESCH, NERYS ANN JONES, CERI DAVIES, J.E. CAERWYN WILLIAMS This inter-disciplinary volume analyses various aspects of the career and context of this remarkable king. Themes discussed include the role of Gruffudd and of Gwynedd in twelfth-century politics; the importance of the genealogical material associated with him, and of his mediaeval biography, Historia Grufud vab Kenan, the first extant biography of any Welsh king; his relations with the Normans and the Irish; and the wider question of Welsh relations with Ireland and the Norwegians in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries.
