Better than the Original!!.......2002-01-18

This inspirational, emotionally-charged follow-up to "Bacillus Subtilis and Other Gram-Positive Bacteria: Biochemistry, Physiology, and Molecular Genetics," delivers the goods. One would expect the authors to be crushed by the weight of expectation for this sequel, but they have defied conventional wisdom and completely outdone themselves. I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me.

Great classic sci-fi - still fresh today.......2007-03-18

H G Wells wrote and published this book of short stories in 1895; the first book he published, if I remember correctly. The writing style is typical Wells - just like he was sitting in front of you telling you a tale - and the stories themselves are quite entertaining. The topics range from an Anarchist set to destroy London by stealing a vial of cholera bacilla (the title story) to a man describing his time on a deserted island and how he hatched out an egg that had been preserved for 400 years. I think my favorite was the taxidermist story, just because it was really twisted :-) Give this book a try - it's a great introduction to the writings of a classic author of truly tremendous standing.

Excellent collection of tales.......2006-03-30

I really enjoyed this collection of 15 tales which range from a different way of looking at every day events, to high adventure (complete with buried treasure), mystery, magic, and science fiction. There is something for everyone in this collection.

These tales show imagination and all are beautifully written in Wells' classical style. One of H.G. Wells' biggest strengths is his ability to paint a picture with words. The reader is very much able to visualize what is going on, whithout being told every single detail.

A must read collection for fans of H.G. Wells and classic SciFi alike.

Personal favorites in this collection include "The Lord of the Dynamos", "Trough A Window", and "The Treasure in the Forest".

These systems require varying degrees of radiation tolerance to perform their missions. Current radiation hardening processes for integrated circuits are expensive and consume significant layout area, increase power consumption, and decrease the frequency of operation. Furthermore, it is becoming more difficult to find fabricators for radiation-hardened electronic devices. In this thesis, two new transistor designs using a bulk CMOS process are tested for radiation hardness and are compared to a standard design. Both show a degree of improvement in subthreshold leakage current and threshold voltage shift over the control transistors. The new designs demonstrate an ability to reduce the effects of radiation on transistor parameters by means of an applied voltage to a second layer of polysilicon material above the control gate material.

I would have liked to have seen some more information about where Bacillus thuringiensis actually came from (Biologically) and what it actually is (again biologically).

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: We color the vertices of a graph G, so that no two adjacent vertices have the same color. We would like to do this as cheaply as possible. An efficient coloring would be very helpful in optimization models, with applications to bin packing, examination timetable construction, and resource allocations, among others. Graph coloring with the minimum number of colors is in general an NP-complete problem. However, there are several classes of graphs for which coloring is a polynomial-time problem. One such class is the chordal graphs. This thesis deals with an experimental algorithm to approximate the chromatic number of an input graph G. We first find a maximal edge-induced chordal subgraph H of G. We then use a completion procedure to add edges to H, so that the chordality is maintained, until the missing edges from G are restored to create a chordal supergraph S. The supergraph S can then be colored using the greedy approach in polynomial time. The graph G now inherits the coloring of the supergraph S.

From the evokative, shimmeringly beautiful images captured by Don Stanfield to the prose scultped by Liz Lundell this book is a treaure. The places are displayed as our memory would hope, and persons portrayed in this masterful tribute to wilderness are the perople who know it and know how to enjoy it.

Look at the faces of 16 year old girls on Stanfield's image :"Voyageurs nouvelles return home on the last day of a 50-day trip" and the magic of the north is incarnate. Spot on.

Gives the Nuts and Bolts of Bandsaws.......2007-09-05

Every chapter is filled with knowledgeable experience gained from using many different types of bandsaws. Lonnie Bird has taught woodworking and the use of power tools such as the band saw for many years. Having used a bandsaw in the past and getting ready to do so again after a 15 year hiatus, I thought I should bone up on the facts. Lonnie had information I never even considered before. His treatment of bandsaw blades and their use is invaluable and complete. This book will be readily available in my shop for quick reference whenever I need it on bandsaw tuning or blade selection.

Really a good read.......2007-08-01

Lonnie has included most everything on a bandsaw, and has produced an informative book, and very readable. Learned a few things, and will keep this one on my woodworking book shelf. I have a Powermatic 14" Bandsaw, and I did change 2 things on it since I bought it. 1. The good fence with a much better one: Kreg. 2. The guides, that had rusted after 3 months, to Carter Guides. I have yet to add the Riser. Wish he would have addressed this a little more.

Buy this before you go shopping for a bandsaw.......2007-07-29

Mostly due to learning more about bandsaws from this book, I have not yet purchased a bandsaw. After studying the details of how these things are manufactured and operated, I am now too picky to buy any of the cheaper models that I can actually afford, and have instead become convinced that the bandsaw should be the center of the shop. With that in mind, I'm still saving up my money, perhaps for a Laguna or MiniMax 18" or 20" saw.

If you can shake off this effect, you'll still be glad you read this book, because you'll know what to look for, and you'll be ready for the way your saw behaves.

Lonnie Bird is a wonderful source for information concerning several well known shop tools. I found this book to be an excellent source of information taking most of the mystery out of the band saw. Loaded with personal insights and suggestions and accompanied with photos and projects. A great source for any level of hobbyist woodworker.

This is the definitive word on bandsaws. I dont think I would ever need another book on the proper way to set up my bandsaw. There is simply very few things forgotten in this book.

I thought the whole approach very common sense ... though my reason for reading it might make one wonder if I had any common sense ... at least now things are organized. If you need (or even just think you need) some help getting organized, I would heartily reccomend it.

Good information about organization.......2007-01-20

This is a pretty large book, so I can't say I read it 100% yet. I have read the several intro chapters as well as the summary chapters and the time/life management chapters. I also read through specific chapters about organizing a few areas at home. I made a few photocopies of both sides of the 'summary card' in the front for quick reference.

I really like the book's clear layout, 'highlight/target' points, and helpful summaries. It seems like you can always organize things better, but yet you don't want to blow tons of time and you want your system to be flexible and USEFUL rather than just looking great. :)

This book has a lot of good information, some humor, and good insights too. It is entertaining, motivating, and informative. It also helps to get junk out of your house that you don't or can't use anymore! I am making improvement in that area now. Overall, I'm a satisfied reader.

I thought this book was very good and offered several suggestions that were helpful. Some of it is just plain common sense but I would still recommend it.

I agree with an earlier review of this book. Nothing new here! Although the layout of this "Dummies" book, follows in the basic outline of all in this series, that is about the extent of the helpful content. It is obvious that the author is organized - as she practically refers back to her own talent in that area frequently. She must not have anyone in her life close to her that is of a different thought process. Namely - the unorganized. I don't believe that she undersands our mindset one bit.

If you want real help, keep looking!

Captivating.......2006-06-03

This book, by Time-Life books editor Donna Lucey, has some very interesting photographs of Montana, taken about halfway between the Lewis and Clark expedition of two hundred years ago and today. Yes, the early 1900s were right in the middle of Evelyn Cameron's career.

Cameron, nee Flower, was one tough and talented lady. She moved to Montana with her husband Ewen, going there initially in 1889, on a hunting trip for their honeymoon. I found the stories and pictures of life in Montana fascinating. Much of the book deals with the growth of Terry, a town in the eastern part of the state, on the Yellowstone river.

At the time, the Kodak camera was the instrument of choice for most American photographers, however Cameron did much of her work with a 5x7 Graflex. There are dozens of her photos in this book.

Although Cameron died in 1928, Lucey was lucky enough to obtain many of Cameron's photos from one of Cameron's friends, Janet Williams, who was 95 years old by the time Lucey met her in August of 1979.

In 2002, PBS began shooting a documentary about Cameron, and it was released last year. It includes over 200 of Cameron's photos (over 100 of which are not in this book), and it won four regional Emmy awards. It was the first high-definition documentary for Montana PBS.

Photographing Montana .......2006-04-11

This work is a treasure. Evelyn Cameron and her husband, born into English society, established a ranch in eastern Montana early in the development of that part of the west. A need for additional income and a love of photography lead Evelyn to produce a large number of high quality photographs. Those photographs represent a historical archive of enormous value. The photos show the people of the time, how they made a living, and the tools that they used. My personal favorite is a photo Evelyn took of herself in her kitchen; she sent it to relatives in England to show them her life on the Montana frontier. It was a life of hardship, but also of achievement. The quality of Cameron's work is the equal of other great western photographers of the era, such as Jackson or Huffman, and it records a side of life not represented by anyone else. There is a balance in this book between text and reproduced photographs. It is a biography of Evelyn Cameron, including excerpts from her journals, as well as an exhibition of her photographs. A museum and gallery in Terry, Montana, is a repository of Evelyn Cameron's work and the total number of photographs is several times what this book is able to present. One hopes that other volumes of Cameron's photos will be published in the near future.

Entirely evocative of the Montana landscape. An excellent gift or coffee table book for Montana natives or Montana-philes. Not only does Evelyn capture the physicality of the place - she captures it's soul - it's very essence.

I live in the area of the photographer's subjects, and totally enjoyed the book and its' subject. The photographs, along with Evelyn Cameron's diary accounts of daily happenings, gave a captivating decription of what many of our homesteading ancestors endured. This is very enjoyable reading for anyone.
