Vascular Differentiation and Plant Growth Regulators (Springer Series in Wood Science)
L. W. Roberts , Peter B., Ph.D. Gahan , and R. Aloni Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387189890 |
Book Description
The main objective of the book is to provide an up-to-date examination of the possible roles of plant hormones during the cytodifferentiation of xylem and phloem elements in higher plants. Various facets of vascular differentiation, as cell determination, cell cycle activity, and the biochemical events in xylogenesis, are analyzed. Furthermore, the latest information on the roles of auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, ethylene, and abscisic acid during vascular cell formation are summarized. A theoretical discussion of the six-point hypothesis and the vascular adaptation hypothesis is included. The experimental induction of vascular differentiation under tissue culture conditions is critically appraised and a concluding chapter covers the interactions between physical factors, growth regulators, and differentiation.

Death Blossoms: Reflections from a Prisoner of Conscience
Mumia Abu-Jamal Manufacturer: South End Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0896086992 |
Book Description
In Death Blossoms: Reflections from a Prisoner of Conscience Mumia Abu-Jamal, America's best known political prisoner, offers poetic observations and reflections on life on this planet and on death row. In this collection of short essays and personal vignettes, which take on everything from spirituality and religion to capitalism and the prison-industrial complex, Mumia examines the deeper dimensions of existence.
Mumia's ability to celebrate life and advocate for revolutionary change while being held, at the state's convenience, at death's door, imbues his thoughts and words with power and passion. "Many people say it is insane to resist the system, but actually, it is insane not to," he writes in "Politics." In "God-Talk on Phase II" he writes, "On death's brink, men begin to see things they've perhaps never seen before. Like those around them, and especially those who share their fateâ¦men whose death warrants have been signed, men with a date to die-live each day with a clarity and a vibrancy they might have lacked in less pressured times."
Mumia turns this clarity towards his quest for spiritual and social fulfillment drawing connections between religion and race politics. He embraces spirituality while exploring the true nature of the institutions that have sentenced him to die.
"Crucial reading for all opponents of the death penalty-and for those who support it, too."-Katha Pollitt, The Nation
"A brilliant, lucid meditation on the moral obligation of political commitment by a deeply ethical-and deeply wronged-human being. Mumia should be freed, now."-Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
"If Mumia Abu-Jamal has nothing important to say, why are so many powerful people trying to kill him and shut him up? Read him."-John Edgar Wideman
Mumia Abu-Jamal, an award-winning journalist and former Black Panther Party member, has been living on death row in a Pennsylvania prison since 1982.

A fascinating record of a spiritual journey.......2002-08-13
From a literary standpoint, West really hypes up the author in his foreword; he compares Abu-Jamal to Herman Melville, Theodore Dreiser, Toni Morrison, Eugene O'Neill, and other great American authors. Wright contributes further to this theme, comparing "Death Blossoms" to works by Baudelaire and Oscar Wilde. So is Mumia all that? I don't know, but "Death Blossoms" is good stuff.
Although there is the expected sociopolitical critique, "Death Blossoms" is, at its core, the record of the author's spiritual journey. Abu-Jamal reflects on his mother's Baptist heritage and his father's Episcopalianism; he also details his explorations of other spiritual paths: Judaism, Catholicism, and the Black Muslim movement. His writings in these sections are powerful and evocative. Ultimately, he pays tribute to the guru known as John Africa and discusses at some length the path founded by this man.
Abu-Jamal also writes about prison life, the media, and United States history. Along the way he cites such diverse sources as Salman Rushdie, Ray Bradbury, the Qu'ran, Nietsche, and Ghanaian folklore.
Overall, this is a fascinating book. I did feel that some of the supplemental material by other authors reads too much like a hagiography of Mumia; it's like the publishers are trying to market him as some kind of modern saint. I also felt that this supplemental material was insensitive to the victim of the crime for which Abu-Jamal was convicted.
Is Abu-Jamal really guilty of murder, or is he an innocent man who was wrongly convicted under a fatally flawed system? I don't know. But I can say that "Death Blossoms" is a compelling piece of contemporary literature.

Prisoner of Conscience: A Memoir

Put Your Person Where Your Heart Is.......2002-09-14
For those who are looking into the actions at Fort Benning and in DC, Kenneth Kennon's book
fills the bill. During the summer of 1998 Kennon spent six months in La Tuna Federal
Corrections Institution for trespassing into Fort Benning. While living and working there, he
kept the journal which forms the basis of the book. The introduction describes the soul-
searching necessary to participate in nonviolent civil disobedience. While incarcerated, his day
to day experiences of beauty, kindness, work and rest are described alongside the malignity of
prison life.
The importance of Communities of Resistance which assist in discernment, organizing, and
support for those involved in nonviolent civil disobedience is woven throughout the text.
Kennon's willingness to follow God's call led him into fellowship with those who oppose the
School of Americas. Read for yourself this journey. Read for yourself the preparation and
discernment that preceded his nonviolent civil disobedience. Read for yourself the support his
family, his church, and countless others brought him in prison.
This Community of Resistance also provided him with many, many books during his prison stay.
Authors old and new enlivened him on a daily basis. The books themselves became resources to
the entire prison community. His comments on these texts throughout the memoir add to the
reader's appreciation for his journey and for the texts themselves.
Original poetry and other writings enriched the memoir with visual images and deeper
reflections. ""Over the years I have studied corrections as a sociologist and visited inmates as a
clergyman. It is a very different experience being a prisoner,"" writes Kennon. He paints prison
life with a mixture of pain and humor that captures the ironic picture of a correctional institution
bent on retribution without rehabilitation. An epilogue gives a glimpse into what has happened
since his release and a brief update on the struggle for peace that caused him, and scores of other
Americans, to become prisoners of conscience.
People are changed in prison. Kennon's description of the shifts in his own spirit during these
six months encourages the reader to attend to the shifting sands of contemporary life. ...
A Courageous Memoir of Conscience.......2002-05-03
But the central part of the book is based on a diary of his day-to-day experiences in federal prison, days often punctuated by petty harassments and intimidations. Especially hard to take were the unpredictable changes of routine in his work assignments, apparently designed to keep him off balance, the difficulty in obtaining necessary medical care, and the illegal shredding of his mail. Throughout his ordeal, Ken's moral was
bolstered by his faith, by correspondence with fellow SOA supporters, and by telephone calls and visits from friends and family members, especially his wife, Mary Ellen. Sprinkled through the text are poems, often inspired by the beauty of nature as viewed from the unique perspective of the prison experience. Since his release Ken continues his work as an SOA Watch activist --he is a pillar of strength for the peace movement generally, and his memoir is an inspiration.
