Do Read This Book.......2000-04-28

My friend sent this book to me from Thailnd to learn more about him. After reading it I begain to understand what I had seen on my previous trips to Thailand. And in some ways felt that I had an advantage that other travelers may not have.If you are concerned with preserving a beautiful culture and saving face, then you need this book. It's in "plain English" and fun to read.

Sheet Stock Cabinets .......2007-07-19

If you feel as I do that MDF and such make excellent cabinets, then this book is for you. In my opinion, particle board and MDF will outlast most people, or at least outlast their ability to live with a given style. For those wanting to build their own kitchen cabinets, this is an excellent book. I am more interested in built ins, but this is the book for me. Proulx has a system that works, and he includes cut sheets, cutting lists, and all kinds of stuff to make this an easy process for his readers. It should be pointed out that this book tells you what you need to know and no more, so it is not the first or the last word on the subject, but it may be the only book you will need.

Great for a Beginner Like Me.......2007-05-07

I think this is a very good book for a first time cabinet builder. After reading several times I have begun to build our kitchen cabinets using most of the methods in the book. So far everything has turned out great and I expect that to continue. The book is straight forward, gives plenty of good examples with pictures. I especially like the standard cabinet cut lists which takes the guesswork out of the dimensions for most common cabinets. While Mr. Proulx uses particle board to build cabinets I have had many people tell me it is not a good material. After building 6 cabinet cases from 5/8" industrial particle board I feel it is a very acceptable material and I am confindent it will hold up in the long term using this method of construction. I added biscuits to all the cases to help alignment and strength. I recommend this book to all the newbies who want to venture off into cabinet making.

Good introductory book........2007-01-09

Overall, this book is of good quality and point you in the right direction to build your own kitchen cabinets.

The title of the book is misleading in the sence that this book only tackle the europen frameless type cabinet build with MPB.

One thing that I didn't like in this book is the fact that I had the feeling to read the same thing over and over and over again for each piece (base, top, corner, etc).

but don't throw out the baby with the bathwater!

The late Danny Proulx was an EXTENSIVE contributor to cabinetry schools and magazines for many years before succumbing to a heart attack at a woodworking convention, but his passion lives on in this wonderfully simple and comprehensive book.

If you want to learn how to build high end custom cabinetry with all the nice details then look at udo schmidt's or jim tolpin's books. If you want to learn the basics to building a solid face frame cabinet with raised panel doors or frameless cabinets, this is an amazing introduction into the world of cabinetry as the author not only describes the steps but also gives you ACTUAL DIMENSIONS for both 5/8" and 3/4" materials for cabinets that are in the standard 3" widths. Not many people realize the merits of proulx's hybrid face frame/frameless cabinet which enable you to save yourself a lot of grief and pain in attaching european hinges and drawer slides to the cabinet sides directly without having to shim out to accomodate the inner lip of the face frame. This is the first book that I've encountered that describes this process. Finally, his section on frameless (or FULL ACCESS) cabinetry is invaluable for folks who don't want to buy a jointer and a planer (both are required) for machining solid wood for face frames. This is also one of the first books to explore this area of cabinetry. Lest you think that european frameless is junk, I recommend poggenpohl or omega cabinets as references.

Yes, the pictures of the cabinets are rather hideous because they utilize low grade plywood slab doors, but you can easily build cabinets that rival those that you see at home depot with SUPERIOR case construction methods but using raised panel doors. I would recommend using pocket screws to attach the face frame to the carcase instead of nails as well as using either confirmat screws, biscuits or assembly screws (NOT drywall screws) for assembling the carcases.

Realize that if you are serious about building your own kitchen cabinets and you want them to turn out good, you are going to need to INVEST some money in good tools including a table saw. You can forgo the slider by building a cheap miter sled but if you're going to be doing this in the future, I would strongly recommend the sliding table attachment by delta or jessem or dewalt or purchasing a guided circular saw rail like eurekazone or festool. Lastly, I would strongly recommend using prefinished material either plywood or melamine as the finishing process for my eleven kitchen cabinets easily consumed just as much time as building them.

For utilitarian cabinets, not fine woodworking.......2006-06-26

I was disappointed in this book at first. I have never before bought a book where not one pictured project was attractive to me personally. You will not see any kitchens like this in magazines. It's all one big paean to particle board.

It was a long while before I realized this book was aimed at the "Wal-Mart/Home Depot box" market and probably succeeds well enough on those terms. Using the cheapest materials to make prosaic design - this suits the type of "Flip This House" mood that has overtaken modern remodeling. At least Proulx suggests some techniques so the resulting cabinets will go for several years instead of sagging in six months the way super cheap prefab cabinets do.

People are so shocked at the idea of paying $30,000 for a kitchen remodel done by genuine cabinetmakers, they're willing to try to make their own. This type of person usually has few tools or skills to bring to the task. They need a book that holds their hands for each step. If they follow the designs in this book, they'll end up with cabinets which could be mistaken for Lowe's you-hang-prefab-from-a-big-box instead of Home Depot's U-build-it-from-pieces-in-a-flat-box.

The four stars are because there's not enough conceptualization of the designs (so people can individualize at least some of it with confidence) and advice to "buy the doors" is not a good thing in a do-it-yourself book. If design is everything or you're building for a buyer who pores longingly over Elle Decor, find another book. This is proletariat stuff, sturdy and dull.

excellent book.......2005-11-17

This book was recommended to me by our pediatrician as our 9-year-old daughter has been having sleep problems. Within a week of implementing the suggestions in this book, our daughter is much better rested, going to bed much easier, and having fewer nightmares. I have now recommended this book to other parents in my daughter's class who have also been struggling with sleep problems.

I have 3 children -- ages 15, 13, and 7. Not only did this book help solve my youngest one's sleep issues, it also helped me to understand my older children's sleep needs. I can't imagine any parent who wouldn't need this book at some point as an invaluable reference. I highly recommend it.

There are a lot of books on investing in the markets. This one is just average. Personally, I found the layout of the book to be very 'busy' and disorganized. I think there are a number of other books that would help the beginning/novice investor more than this one. Look at my other reviews for suggestions.

Solid Advice, Well Expressed.......2003-01-29

As a veteran financial broadcaster, Fred Siegel loses nothing when shifting to the print media. He is just as clear in these pages as he is on his talk show on WWL. He believes that profits drive value, and the investor must look for them, not some hot Dot Com or 2020 high tech product that is unproven and unnecessary. As much as there is good advice on what an investor should do, the really valuable advice is on what not to do, and who not to do it with. This book is a real eye-opener for the average investor.

This book is for the reader who is new to investing. If you are interested in investing in the stock market, but are worried about the outcome, then this books provides some good advice. The investment approach recommended is truly for very conservative types - but the truth is, that the author's recommendations have worked well in the past and are worth consideration by all investors. There are those who are very comfortable investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and a host of other vehicles that can earn lots of money . . . or not. Then there are those who are chicken-afraid of making the wrong decision, losing their shirts, and suffering the ridicule of everyone who knows them. This book is written for chickens.

Fred Siegel is president of an investment management firm in New Orleans, widely respected for knowing the investment field very well. In addition to running his advisory firm, Siegel also runs The Siegel Group International, providing financial news analysis to broadcast media in the United States and other countries. He has been on the air continually since 1984, broadcasting from WWL-TV and WWL radio in New Orleans. His advice is heard far and wide-and can now be read in a fun sort of book.

Fun? Investing? Chickens? Scary. The book is written in a light vein so it's easy to move through. The type is large, so that readers don't have to squint to get his message. There are several unusual features in the book-like red and black ink on the pages. Illustrations of chickens abound. There are lots of call-outs and sidebars, including testimonial quotes from his clients. The book is almost too self-serving in that regard, but one might expect a talk-show personality to be a bit self-promoting.

The book is organized into twelve chapters, dealing with the stock market, jargon, and then the focus on chicken stocks. Siegel makes his point that buying particular types of stocks is wiser than buying others, and explains. He doesn't like mutual funds, but talks about them, trusts, bonds, and annuities. Even on-line investing is covered for the reader.

As you might suspect, this book is going to give you a "once over lightly." It's not really deep, nor does it need to be. It meets its design of giving chicken investors enough knowledge to feel comfortable looking more deeply into the opportunities. As with any investment advisor, it's smart to take the advice carefully and understand that biases are present and influential. Whether you agree with everything Siegel says or not, you will have a broader understanding of the world of investing after reading this book.

This book wasn't written to convince anyone that the business community lacks a moral conscience. It was written to help employees, citizens, manager, owners and CEOs deal with the problem. It's a workbook for new and on-going businesses which want to incorporate ethical practices into the company.

Dalla Costa names companies which have acted with a moral conscience and explains how this has not hindered their success, but has even stood them in good stead through a crisis. The words moral and business don't usually go together, in fact many people think they are opposites. It's all about money and many business people will tell you so...until a law suit arises. Then they whip out their ethics policy and blame a "rogue employee".

Dalla Costa doesn't just concentrate on U.S. companies. His imperative for the global economy is global responsibility.

He has the experience to speak knowledgeably and the plan to help us begin to change.

Four stars because it was tedious at times but still worth reading.

Optimistically orienting us toward a global ethic........1999-03-30

The author demonstrates the connection between ethical conduct and successful business. He provides a critique of economic assumptions and tackles hard issues head-on. He argues forcefully against the pessimistic, fatalistic view that ethics are the ideal-but amoral behavior is the 'real.' He sees the emergence of a global ethic. To achieve a global ethic Dalla Costa offers a business model for an ethical orientation which includes: manage assets professionally; conduct interactions with humanity; be fair; be honest; strive for justice; and honor the environment.

The author's view is that a global ethic involves the policies of nations and strategies of companies, but at its core is the ethical orientation of the individual. The current stuggle for achieving "transparancy" in financial matters in most parts of the world, however, points up the complex challenges the global economy presents on the most basic level. The ideas in this book are a tough sell, but they are persuasively and clearly presented, leaving one with hope. Dalla Costa is clearly one who sees light at the end of the tunnel. Excellent. An asset to understanding Native American culture,.......2006-10-21

this book delves into the detailed life of Frank Mitchell, a Navajo Indian who rose from the depths of the reservation (from the 1800's to around 1970) to greatness through his autobiography. This book demonstrates what the Navajos as a People have gone through, their problems, their joys, their sorrows and their successes through one mans eyes. From working on a railroad in Arizona to later becoming a Judge in the late 1940'-50's, Frank Mitchell was an amazing individual. He overcame all the problems of reservation life achieving his goals through hard work, perseverance, and a strong spirtiual connection with his Creator.
Although he had some schooling, Frank was not that literate and had a Navajo interpreter to explain things to the author who mad a successful attempt to show Frank as he was. At times the book became overwhelming in its readings because Frank had a tendency to be redundant and explain things in so many different ways and times when interviewed. Because of that, It has actually taken me months to completely read this book. However, anyone interested in Native American Studies/History will find this book to be an asset to their library. It not only reveals Frank Mitchell's amazing life story but enlightens the reader in understanding the Navajo culture and ways of his People.
