3 out of 5 stars Not the best of Time Out guides, but likely the best for SF.......2003-07-17

First off, I should say that for a visitor to San Francisco, this guide is still your best bet for all around coverage of shopping, bars, and sights. If you are going to get one guide, get this one (just make sure the restaurants still exist before you drop by!).

I really like Time Out guides in general, and have found them indispensable for such places as diverse as Budapest, Las Vegas, and New York. This guide, however, lacks the fun attitude and vast amount of information that these others have. I am clearly biased, being a Bay Area native, but the writers just got on my nerves: the bar section, for example, constantly categorizes places as catering to "pretentious hipsters" or "scenester yuppies", while other places are left for the "cool kids." Critiques such as these seem so pretentious and as grasping to prove some "alternative" credibility. Also, this book is much shorter than Time Out guides for other cities, and they could have written more: places like Mendocino County, the nearby San Mateo County coast, and even Oakland are given scant coverage, and several landmark SF institutions have been left out. There is nothing on San Jose (apart from the airport address) or Silicon Valley, the nearby metropolis that dwarfs SF. So while this guide is great for a visitor, if you are planning to move to SF or are a local trying to learn more, you may want to go with a more in depth guide (Avon Travel's Moon Handbooks, for instance).

5 out of 5 stars Tried and tried good advice, good size for travel.......2002-03-29

A good and straight forward guide to San Francisco from the venerable English publisher. This company should do more guides. I used this when I went to San Francisco and it was indispensable.

        2 out of 5 stars Needs revising.......2001-12-30

Out of the three books I recently used to tour the city, this one had the most errors when it came to restaurant listings. The writing was dry and as a guide it lacked personality.

        5 out of 5 stars Essential!.......2000-09-25

I found this guidebook perfect for providing the best advice on what to do, what to eat and where to stay on my recent vacation in San Francisco. I would recommend for any twenty- or thirty-something person who wants the inside scoop on the best stuff in the city.

Did Billy the Kid escape to die in 1950 in Hico, Texas? W.C. Jameson analyzes the evidence, including use of new technology to produce a compelling case for Billy's survival.

4 out of 5 stars Great book full of truth.......2007-04-22

Jameson is one of the best writers of history I have read. The way he gathers all the facts together and puts them out there for the reader to analyze is great. The truth is great to hear even though is conflicts with most historians. I would recommend this book to all.

3 out of 5 stars Very interesting book about a fictious old man........2006-06-28

Mr. Jameson is a very good author with the uncanny ability to sway your thoughts and beliefs. I bought a copy of this book when it first hit the market place, not because I believed Brushy was Billy, but just to find out if Mr. Jameson had anything new to say. Of course, I wasn't surprised to find the same old material being written with a little icing to make it more interesting. I have read every book and paper that was ever written about Brushy Bill, and I must admit, this book is one of the most interesting to read, but it is not all convincing. There is NO real proof to back up Mr. Jameson's case. In fact, there is just too much proof available to prove that Brushy Bill was an imposter, fake, and liar. So, if you do read the book, remember that it is pure fiction and should be taken that way.

5 out of 5 stars Is History Incorrect?.......2006-04-05

"Billy the Kid: Beyond the Grave" by W.C. Jameson is fascinating reading. Whether or not you believe the conspiracy that Jameson alleges took place, the historical detail of a little known conflict (the Lincoln County War) and the many intriguing characters that participated, along with the rough American West, makes for quite a literary journey.
Jameson's story centers on Bill Roberts, a man who died at 90 in Texas, who claimed to be Billy the Kid. His story is that Pat Garrett passed off a buddy of his, who he shot by mistake, as the Kid in order to collect the bounty that was on the Kid's head and advance his own political career. Such a tactic would have been much easier in 1881, when very few people knew exactly what Billy the Kid looked like - - most went on legend or newspaper drawings.
Jameson presents a very detailed outline of why Roberts could have been the notorious outlaw - - as an earlier reviewer pointed out, there is no smoking gun here, no "a-ha!" solution, but there is some solid background.
Was Bill Roberts the Wild West gunslinger, who managed a narrow escape from the law? Or was he a confused, publicity seeking old man?
This book will probably not convince those devout historians who believe without a doubt that Pat Garrett sent Billy the Kid into the hereafter in 1881 in New Mexico. For those who may know little about the Kid, or who are open minded about a possible conspiracy, it will be an exciting read.
The book itself is not too long, just over 100 pages, and has a nice section of photographs.
                  Definitely recommended for history buffs!

5 out of 5 stars Billy the Kid; 'Killed' in New Mexico---DIED in Texas .......2005-12-29

This book clearly shows why it is so important to do the exhumation of Brushy Bill Roberts of Hico, TX and Catherine Antrim of Silver City, NM (who was Billy's half-aunt, not his mother by the way). Mitochondrial DNA will finally prove once and for all which of the legends is correct. We do exhumations all the time for various reasons and with a lot less fan fare than this. "Billy the Kid; 'Killed' in New Mexico---DIED in Texas" is the title of a manuscript/book written by Dr. Jannay Valdez and Judge Bobby E Hefner- that pretty much sums it up- BOTH states should be able to come together like adults and share Billy the Kid no matter how this turns out!

3 out of 5 stars Same old "Billy the Kid" Stuff!.......2005-11-02

It seems we have another book dealing with the possiblity of an outlaw dying much later than previously recorded in history. This time it is "Billy the Kid," who according to author W. C. Jameson, lived to be an old man until his death in Hico, Texas. Open-minded readers will appreciate and actually like this book, I did not. This is like all the other books claiming that a notorious bandit of the old west lived to a ripe old age and was not killed as previously noted in history. We have the Jesse James and Butch Cassidy controversies, and now once again we have "Billy the Kid." Enough with the stories that are told over and over, which have no real proof or documentation to prove or change what most people already believe happened in history. I gave this book a middle-of-the-road rating due to the facination people have with controversial historical subject matter. To me, however "Beyond the Grave" should remain buried!

Loop d Loop is a mixture of awesome, inspiring designs & directions that can be confusing. I started one of the projects 4 times & could never get it to look right.
But I loved the design so much that I took what I learned from the false starts & changed the pattern to be even more what I wanted it to be. Now it's going just fine & I feel kind of proud of myself for showing some flexibility & creativity. A strange tribute to a book of patterns, but - there you have it.

I bought this book looking for some interesting designs, but I found most of them to be either silly, ugly or both. They are different, but not wearably different. I just don't know how much demand there is for Robin Hood style neck warmers. Knitter friends have made similar comments after looking at the patterns.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised and impatient to start!.......2007-03-28

I'm a 33 year old knit-o-holic and I love youthful designs so this book piqued my interest when I saw so much buzz in blog-world (especially that darling ballet t-shirt!). However, when I went to the Loop-de-Loop website, I was more than a little turned off by the horrid modeling of the projects in the book. Several projects still captivated me enough to purchase the book through the Amazon Marketplace and hoped that the website photos were not the photos in the book.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened this book! The models, while a few are very thin, are much more normal size than the website models, and the photographs are beautifully done. I also love the photo of Teva on the back flap. I think it's because she looks like me - I mean we're probably around the same age, look to be about the same body type, and we have the same attitude about knitting and designing.

Is it just me, or are the Stewart, Tabori, and Chang books the ones you gravitate towards as well? I could (and do) sit and read these books like a novel. The photos are gorgeous and they obviously hold high standards for the products they publish, in quality of the design of the book and the design of the patterns. Take a look at Weekend Knitting and Last-Minute Knitted Gifts if you don't believe me!

Ok, nuff said. I think this is a great book with designs that can appeal to a wide range of knitters and knittees. I made the ballet T-shirt in one day and am on to number 2! I want many things out of this book so I can't name them all...just check it out and see for yourself!

As an experienced knitter, I found the ideas very interesting and exciting. However, knitting the actual pieces is fraught with frustration. The instructions are both poorly written and contain *a lot* of errors. There are no 'correction' pages on her website nor did she answer any emails regarding the pattern instructions. Several expert knitter friends suggested that rather than continue to waste time attempting to dicipher and amend her instructions, I ought to simply look at the photographs and create my own set of instructions. Not at all what I expect from a knitting magazine editor and designer. However, the ideas are certainly interesting--which the only reason I gave it 2 stars.

I picked up a copy of this book from my local library today, hoping to plan a summer vacation using the information therein. It's going to be a tough read if the rest of the book is filled with as many spelling and grammar errors as I found on the first few pages! Hopefully, the actual content of the book will be useful enough to overshadow this. If Mr. Rajer releases a second edition, I hope he finds a new editor.

5 stars for content, 3 stars for comprehension.

There are a lot of books out there that talk about child development and what to expect for new parents. This book really does not give you any specific things to look out for. Basically it is written like a self help book with not much in the way of guidance. For child development get the book called "Baby Steps" by Claire B Kopp, PHD. In addition, the stuff in this book is made into an applicable 5 step process for calming your baby in the DVD and book called " the happiest baby on the block".
The Dr. Spock books dont go into depth in any one area. I suggest finding specific topic books on the areas of interest to you. A lot of things in this book are things that once I had the baby did nothing for me. In addition, when you leave the hospital , the nurses and pediatrician seeing your child at the hospital go over this with you prior to being discharged.
Don't waste your money on this book.

This is a very thorough, well organized resource for baby/child questions and issues from birth (even pre-birth) on up. I tend not to think any one book is a complete all in one - but this is pretty darn close. We also like that the advice and opinion offered is not as tense as some other books, as in "you MUST do this and be SURE you DON'T do this", rather, it offers examples and reasons behind the tried and true and stresses no one is a perfect parent - no two babies are exactly the same.
I plan to purchase several copies for my friends that are currently expecting.

A celebration of the artist, mystic, and Nobel nominee Nicholas Roerich, whose life and work significantly influenced the development of modern art and culture.

Messenger of Beauty opens the door to the mystical world of Nicholas Roerich and invites us to witness his far-reaching vision. Artist, writer, educator, archaeologist, explorer, mystic, and peacemaker, Roerich (1874-1947) left a rich legacy of some 7,000 paintings, drawings, and set and costume designs (most notably for Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring); 30 books on the mystic East; and countless articles and lectures. The Roerich Peace Pact--a remarkable treaty signed by President Roosevelt and 26 other heads of state that sought to preserve cultural monuments during times of war--earned the artist a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Messenger of Beauty includes 88 color plates that cover the full scope of Roerich's artistic career, from ancient Slavic, mythic, and archaeological subjects to breathtaking Himalayan landscapes and religious themes that span the spiritual traditions of the world.

This is an exquisitely beautiful book and immediately transports one to 'another dimention'. Roerich's paintings, his unusual use of colour and hues capture a luminous quality that speaks to the soul. His writing, paintings and travels are a true inspiration of the human spirit.

5 out of 5 stars A Constant Source of Inspiration.......2000-09-18

This is an excellent book on the beautiful and inspiring paintings of Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. Exceptional value with 88 colour reproductions of his work. The written material is faultless and fascinating. Roerich was dedicated to Beauty and I find that whenever I dip into this book I am completely captivated by his ability to speak to my innermost heart and spirit through the language of colour and the rich symbolism of his paintings. Fascinated by the legends of Shambhala and the wisdom of the ancients, Roerich's paintings and Decter's words take us on a wonderful journey that will enrich our lives. Roerich was a very deeply spiritual man and so his paintings serve this higher purpose. If you wish to light the inner fire of your spirit through art and beauty, then this is the book for you.

The book contains over 80 of his paintings, drawings and theatrical set designs. The biographical accounting is fascinating and inspiring. I found this book very enjoyable and highly recommend it. 5 out of 5 stars A unique glimpse of Ireland before the Famine.......2006-03-13

Asenath Nicholson was a Christian radical-pacifist, abolitionist, vegetarian, feminist (of sorts)-who toured Ireland in 1844 on the eve of the Great Hunger, with the twin goals of investigating the condition of the Irish poor, and of spreading the gospel among them. "Ireland's Welcome to the Stranger" is her account of her time in the cabins and manor houses, and is a rare and (usually) sympathetic picture of pre-famine Ireland. Ms. Nicholson could be trying (quite judgemental, something of a prude) both to her contemporary hosts and her current readers, but in the end her honesty, indefatigability and generosity cover the bill. Of particular interest to this reader was her reporting of widespread hunger before the failure of the potato crop. I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the period.
