Ron Kuhn.......2006-09-25
I have lived in Pennsylvania all of my life, hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. As a seasoned outdoorsman I thought that I knew most of the lookouts that the Keystone state had to offer. Upon reading Pennsylvania Overlooks I realized there are many more overlooks than I imagined. From now on I plan to carry the conveniently sized book in my vehicle so I can find the overlooks in the area where I am traveling with my family. This book simplifies the search for overlooks by organizing the overlooks into regions with directions and points of interest. The B/W photos inside give a great indication of what you will see at the overlook without giving away the sheer beauty once you actually get there. I plan to purchase several copies of this book as gifts to friends and family that enjoy beautiful natural areas, especially breathtaking views.
Perfect Travel Companion.......2006-07-22
In addition to the descriptive overviews of the scenic overlooks, I find the "Opportunities" and "Amenities" sections very helpful when planning outings to these sites. Also, the compact size of this book (approximately the size of a folded state map) makes it a convenient fit in my backpack and glove compartment.
Be aware of what you are ordering.......2003-10-11
I must confess to some disappointment upon receipt of Pennsylvania Overlooks. The only color picture of these gorgeous overlooks is on the front cover. All other photos are black and white. The narrowness of the book (less than 4 inches wide)makes it difficult even to appreciate the black and white photos. The whole feeling of the book is like those narrow books you get at chain motels that tell you where the locations of their other motels are.

Book Description
What is it really like to be a diplomat? Bill Cordiner's 28 years in the Service explodes many myths and shows a rich, varied, even dangerous but never dull experience shot through with the unexpected and even hilarious. These are travelers' tales as much as diplomatic memoirs and begin in Saigon during the Vietnam War, with an encounter with the Viet Cong. Later postings included Ethiopia shortly after the fall of Haile Selassie, where he was buried under tons of coffee and was host to Princess Anne at a bush campsite, in oil-rich Kuwait in sharp contrast to his next posting in Iraq. From Antigua at independence he was thrown into US business life with Boeing and then to near-feudal Tonga.
Book Description
Confederate guerrilla. Bank robber. Cold-blooded killer. Jesse James was all of these, but still, most of his life remains a mystery. Now Marley Brant, author of the acclaimed biography The Outlaw Youngers, sets the record straight, painting a portrait of a man obsessed with rebellion, loyalty, and an irrepressible need to be known. He loved as intensely as he hated. And in his eyes, the war between the states would never be over. From his obscure childhood to his explosive career during the Civil War to his earning the reputation as the country's most notorious bandit, Jesse James brings you the facts and dispels the fiction. Once and for all, we can finally know the man and the myth. * Includes rare photos from the James family archives * There are many myths and misconceptions about Jesse James-this book sets the record straight and is the most up-to-date book on the subject * The author's first book, The Outlaw Youngers, drew rave reviews from the Los Angeles Times, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and others

jesse james.......2006-03-16
a little wordy in the second chapter, but it is finally understand able why jesse and frank james reacted to their family and defending what they believed in. loving their family and what is good. hating what was not right in their eyes.
Jesse James: The Man and the Myth.......2004-02-06
Apparently, Hollywood paid Brant to do research for a movie on the Younger Brothers. Without a doubt, the research overlapped to the James brothers. For the first ¾ of the book, she does a fare job of exposing the myths & must have tired because she took the last quarter to reiterate the dime store versions of history.
I question not so much of what was written, conversely what was left out of the book that would eliminate the absolutes is disturbing.
Fact or Fiction?.......2002-07-10
I did not check up on the source of references for this book, but I really enjoyed the reading! It was the most interesting factual book I have read in a long time. I thought the Author was very clear on the instances that were tall tales and what not. So over all, if your interested in a spicey history such as Jesse James, I highly recommend this book.
Excellent Research and Lively Reading.......2001-10-25
This is an extraordinary book!
As a Civil War buff in years past, I was particularly drawn to historical biographies. In recent years, I have developed a keen interest in the Post Civil War and Outlaw periods. I've visited many historical sites, museums and the like. I've heard lectures and had conversations with on-site historians, academic pros and other enthusiasts. When the subject was JESSE JAMES, virtually all of them spoke highly of this book and considered it a "must read." That's what led me to buy the book. I am amazed at the depth of the research, much of it painstakingly conducted first hand. It is unusual to see such a strong mix of documentation -- archived legal papers, state records, historical first hand accounts, family accounts and so on -- gathered in such a logical, readable format. Events are well chronicled and presented in an engaging manner. Conclusions are both logical and thought provoking. To use a cliché (as I am definitely not a writer/biographer!) I found myself reluctant to put it down. Rarely have I experienced such pleasure in getting to know an important historical figure, their times and the forces that would drive their destiny. I can personally recommend "Jesse James" to anyone seeking scholarly knowledge of the man and his times. Jesse's remarkable personal story truly comes alive in this engaging, artfully presented and very well written book. I now look forward to reading more of Ms. Brant's books -- for knowledge AND pleasure!
Erring on the side of legend.......2001-10-01
Marley Brant is perhaps better known for her book on the Younger brother, partners in crime with Jesse James and his brother Frank. There have been literally dozens of books on the story, and one might legitimately ask, why another one? I opened the book to pages 58-59 and immediately found the apocryphal story of the alleged attack on the farm outside Kearney, Mo. where Jesse was born, which supposedly occurred in February 1867, presented as fact. I checked the source, note #4, Chapt. 6, on page 274, and found it to be I, JESSE JAMES, a work of historical fiction by Jesses great-grandson. In his book, JESSE JAMES WAS HIS NAME, by William Settle, one of the few reliable accounts, this yarn is debunked, in note 34, page 210 by Robert James, Frank James' son. It appeared in the mythmaking writings of John Newman Edwards, the father of the James myth, in the 1870's. I would have given this book a four star rating, but for things like this. The book in in fact rather dated, in light of more recent scholarship. The fact that it came out somewhat after
the 1996 DNA testing on the remains of Jesse James and spate of cable documentaries about same, and was only published in paperback, indicates that it was probably intended to cash in on the backwash of interest generated by the media. Brant went on to write a book about Southern rock music.

Dog is truly hu-man's best friend!.......2000-11-24
This unique treatise, written so that readers of all ages can climb into the fur of our best friend and see the world at knee-level, is an extraordinary step towards reconciliation of the love-hate relationship between our two species; Ms Mendoza, from her lengthy experience and keen insight and empathy with dogs of all nations, has made a giant first step for mankind towards co-existence with our canine companions, who are unequalled in their capacity for unconditional love and loyalty, humans coming in a distant second... :>)
Fun reading and informative.......2000-10-12
I am so glad to have this book. I thought it was a cute idea but I had no idea of how informative and helpful it is. I have always enjoyed the dogs I have owned over the years and I thought I knew a lot about them, but this book gets you thinking and aware of so much more and it increases your joy of having a dog. I think it is a great book for new dog owners, especially if you have a dog for the first time. This book will often be a gift I give in the future.

Customer Reviews:
Make this your first sock book.......2007-09-05
If you have never knit socks and are looking for your first book, make it this one. Why? Well, maybe you have not yet decided if you want to knit socks on 4 dpns, 5 dpns, 2 circs or one long circ (aka magic loop.) No problem, Charlene breaks it down for all of these methods. Sure, an experienced sock knitter wouldn't need all of that hand holding, but it's reassuring to know how many stitches you are supposed to have on each needle.
Maybe you don't know if you want to knit them in a very fine yarn or worsted. It's OK, she's figured that out, too. Want to surprise your your grandma who wears an 8.5 wide? Look up the measurements on the handy chart included. Not sure if you want to knit toe up or top down? Never fear! Charlene includes directions for both ways. But wait, there's more! Lots of stitch patterns are included, categorized by stitch count repeats. One of my only complaints about the book is that when one of these categories begins on one page, the next page doesn't have a header noting that these, too, are 6 stitch repeat patterns. A small quibble.
This book gains a slight edge over her first book because she includes the toe-up knitting instructions for all of the socks which is not in the first. There is slightly more info on cast-offs because of this, including kitchener bind-off in 1x1 rib and 2x2 rib. I haven't found this information in any of my other reference books, and I have quite a few. That said, if you want a book that tells you how to make 6 different types of heels, 7 types of toes and 14 different cast-ons, it's probably not the book for you.
There is quite a bit of overlap between Charlene's two books in the very basic sock knitting info, for example the foot size charts, sock anatomy diagrams, etc. That's actually a good thing because all of the info you need is here in the second book even if you don't have the first.
Finally, there are many beautiful socks to ogle and study. It is very useful to see for example, how the garter edge stockinette heel flap looks before you knit it, or how a small change in the method of slipping stitches affects the texture. And of course to see how some of those sock yarns actually look knit up into a sock.
I love this book!.......2007-08-19
I have both her first book and this one, and both of them are very useful, but I actually prefer this one. I like the way all the socks include both toe-up and cuff-down directions, and all the stitch patterns are in back, each with suggested ribbing. Her technique instructions are pretty good, too. I finally figured out how to do a short-row heel following her directions.
Patterns AND a Great Stitch Resource.......2007-07-25
I'm new to sock knitting and this book, along with the first one (Sensational Knitted Socks) is an amazing resource. Even if you didn't like any of the patterns, the book would be worth the price because of all the useful information in it. It assumes nothing.
The creative juices are flowing!.......2007-06-21
What a wonderful book. With more ideas and patterns, my heart is soaring with how much I can now create!
Terrific!.......2007-06-21
I have Schurch's first sock book and thought I would not need her
second book. However, I took a look at it and I had to have it. The
addition of the index in the back of the book is a thoughtful improvement.
I love this book! The patterns are new, interesting and doable. A great
book for a new or experienced sock knitter.

Customer Reviews:
A sock book for all levels.......2007-10-03
I'm an experienced knitter and I own a TON of knitting books (about four books just on socks). But I wish this had been the FIRST sock book I read. Here's what I love about it:
* The designs are realistic -- they're socks I would actually wear, let alone spend months (at my rate) knitting
* It teaches how to knit ANY SIZE sock, from toddler to NBA player, with easy-to-understand tables. Who knew the foot circumference was such an important measurement?
* It has the BEST instructions I've ever read on that blasted kitchener stitch. Most how-to books explain how to do it when the two edges can be placed flat, right sides up, but of course that's impossible when you're knitting in the round.
* She teaches you how to mix and match different leg patterns and heel and toe methods in a way that actually makes you want to try them.
* Using her method, I have finally eliminated the hole at the top of the gusset! I used to have to stitch up the hole when I wove in the ends, and that always bugged me.
* Don't let the goofy cover fool you. This is a classy, foolproof, indispensable book.
Excellent Book!.......2007-09-22
I picked up this book because it came highly recommended as a beginner's "learn to knit socks" book, and I was not disappointed!
I've never really understood how to knit socks before... I'm a beginner who hasn't really done much past rectangles and modified rectangles. (Scarves, blankets, hats...) But this book explains socks so well that you don't have to just blindly follow the pattern - you "get" what's supposed to be happening even before you do things!
It includes a few basic sock "recipes" based on the number of stitches in the decorative stitch pattern... but what stitch pattern you use is up to you, so with this book nearly any stitch pattern in the world can be a sock!
Sock Knitter.......2007-09-15
A sample of all the different methods to knit the heel and toe were included in the book. The patterns are challenging. One of the best sock knitting books I have purchased.
Great resource.......2007-09-10
This book is an excellent resource for a beginning sock knitter. I like the way patterns are written for both circular and double pointed needles. The instructions are easy to understand.
An indispensable sock knitting book.......2007-09-07
I've knit for a few years now, but I always shied away from knitting socks finding the instructions in various magazines, books, etc., too complicated and generally confined to a certain type of yarn, gauge, and even sock size.
"Sensational Knitted Socks" is what launched me into the handknitted sock world!
Each pattern has instructions on how to knit with 4 double points, 5 double points or 2 circulars. You choose your gauge and yarn. Freedom of choice!
The instructions are very clear -- lots of photographs and instructional charts.
The sample socks pictured in each chapter are gorgeous -- but if you prefer, choose one of the other stitch patterns suggested (and photographed). Individuality is encouraged!
Ms. Schurch has included knitting instructions for a "mini sock" to help the novice sock knitter learn the parts of a sock and end up with a "real" sock when completed. I was glad I took her advice and made my mini sock - quick and painless!
It's truly a wonderful book for anyone who wants to either learn to knit socks or would like to add to their sock knitting library.
I highly recommend this book!

Encyclopedia of Garden Ferns
ASIN: 088192458X |
Book Description
The wet tropics are home to about half of the world's fern species, from the delicate, lacy maidenhair (Adiantum) to the dramatic staghorn (Platycerium). This well-illustrated guide, a companion to Orchid Growing in the Tropics, presents a wealth of useful cultivation information that will be of particular interest to greenhouse gardeners.
Customer Reviews:
depends on your interest........2000-10-31
The first half of this book are general chapters on ecology, propagation, uses, folklore, etc.; the second half consists of about 100 treatments per species. To start with the latter: if you're looking for a guide to identify tropical ferns, this is not your book. Contrary to what the title suggests the area covered is Malaysia only. Then there are too few species with too concise descriptions.
However, as an introduction to tropical ferns, especially to the Malaysion region, it /is/ a valuable book. It gives a lot of background and facts you won't easily find in other books. It's easy to read with good colour pictures. Read it before you go to Malaysia, and again after your return. But in the field you want a completer guid which, admittedly, is hard to find (try to get a copy of Holttum's Ferns of Malaya).

Great text.......2007-06-19
This book, and the essential course that goes along with it, are fantastic at teaching the nuts and bolts of Natural Family Planning, which is a 99% effective method for regulating births.
NFP gets a bad wrap. Liberals and Traditionalists both dismiss it as "Catholic Birth Control." Both groups are wrong. NFP, as it requires periods of abstinence and places no artificial barrier in the way of God's creative hand, is NOT Catholic "birth control" in any sense of the word. Rather, it is a life affirming practice that recognizes that ABC (artificial birth control) is sinful and a rejection of God in our marriages. It also provides a school of sanctity for the married couple while at the same time, much more often than not, making the couple more generous regarding bringing children into the world.
This book however has several weaknesses, not the least of which is that it largely ignores the Theology of the Body, the great and important body of work on human sex and sexuality by John Paul II.
The good news is that the Couple to Couple League is in the process of redoing their textbook and their curriculum. There is a new text coming that addresses many of the valid criticisms against this book put forth by other reviewers.
I love NFP, I love the Church's teachings. The truth has set me free. Try it for yourself.
Anyone interested in studying the Church's teaching on sex and sexuality should check out the following books:

Would not buy again..........2007-04-03
As other reviewers have stated, there is a lot of good information in this book AND it has a very strident religious tone. The information on fertility awareness is covered just as well, and in a clearer format,in Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility," though I realize that this book is intended for those taking the class on NFP and would be structured for ongoing class sessions. The author's doctrine being shoved down my throat throughout the book, however, make it doubtful that I will ever want to read through this again. I even agree with almost all of what he says about artificial birth control, his tone is just too condescending to make for enjoyable reading. Bottom line, if you are a staunch Catholic--this is the book for you. If not, perhaps check this out of the library first.
Skip this one.......2007-02-23
I found this book overly preachy and borderline offensive. The NFP instruction is helpful, but hard to stomach the morality statements in between. Instead try Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility".
Excellent instructional manual for beginners.......2007-02-19
This book is an excellent instructional manual for those women who want to learn and practice natural family planning. It has all the information you need to start you charts in the first few chapters. You can get as much or little out of it as you want. You can simply read the rules and charting chapters, or you can read the additional chapters on the science of your cycles, additional "special situations" chapters about coming off the pill, irregular temperature patterns, etc.
This book is scientific, but also religious. As other reviewers have stated you can simply gloss over the religious information if it doesn't interest you.
I taught myself NFP soley from this book and I'm now in my 2nd cycle. I choose to read the majority off the book all the way through before starting, but you can start charting after only reading the first few chapters. Besides using NFP to both avoid pregnancy, I find it very insightful to learn more about my body changes during cycles. I think its useful for any woman to be more in tune with her body to help realize when something is irregular.
I HIGHLY recommend this book. I'm so pleased with this natural method of birth control and wish I had started it sooner.
Fantastic and Very Helpful.......2007-02-12
This book was extremely helpful and informational. I thought I knew what I was doing till I read this book and learned so much more. I highly recommend it if you are trying to get pregnant or if you are trying to use it as a means of birth control.
Book Description
The roller-coaster rise to stardom of Les McKeown, who transformed the Bay City Rollers from a one-hit-wonder boy-band into a super-group, and his subsequent descent into near destitution after quitting the band. It is a remarkable story of extremes, and a no-holds barred account of Rollermania.
Customer Reviews:
Language Barrier.......2007-06-27
I thought the content was good but the language that was used was a little hard to get used to.
Great Bio.......2007-05-12
If you're into pop bands, this is a must. Les knows what the reader wants: his life an adventures with the Bay City Rollers. And this is what you're going to get, tons of memories of fans, concerts and anecdotes of one of the more popular bands of the 70's. He got a big ego, but most of his rants are well argumented and I agree with him in a lot of his observations. Highly entertaining and recommended.
Recommended!.......2004-05-28
OK, he wasn't my favorite Roller...but even I had to admit there was something about the devilish glint in Leslie McKeown's eye. His ego sometimes seemed bigger than the whole of Europe, so it's appropriate that he would be the Roller to come out with a book like this. I didn't know just how humble his beginnings were, and I have a lot more respect for him now. Leslie has a very natural, humorous style of writing and is a born storyteller. This kept me reading until I finished it in only 2 days. Even if you weren't a BCR fan, Leslie's book gives a good look into the realities of being a pop star in the 70s.
Well done, Les!.......2004-05-24
What an entertaining read! Les McKeown has been through a lot and shares it all in this book, which is at once hilarious, tragic, and eye-opening. He gives the inside scoop on his life as the frontman of the hysteria-inducing Bay City Rollers and beyond. Les shares the whole story with us - from his upbringing in Edinburgh, to his first forays into music, to teen idolatry in the Rollers, to the aftermath. His sense of humor remains intact and his take on life and his experiences is refreshing. He pulls no punches and seems like a pretty cool guy. Thanks for telling your story, Les!
