Guide to roads traveled fairly often.......2006-04-23
Five years ago we came to Colorado agog at exotic scenery in the mountains, on the plains, and along the Front Range. The more we know Colorado, the more we want to know, so I am always on the lookout for books to give us interesting information and suggestions. I wish this had been such a book. Instead, this guide directs readers to some of the roads most most heavily trafficked: to Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, to Mesa Verde in the southwest corner of the state, to Garden of the Gods, and to almost anywhere you already know about in Colorado.
The book takes an unconventional (okay, I'll say it: weird) approach to dividing the state into regions. For example, city smack in the middle of the state ends is grouped with a town at the southwest corner. I am struggling to explain what simply does not make sense about how this book constructs its regions for travel without raining down a barrage of geographic detail you neither want nor need. In the end, I can tell both as a visitor to the state and, now, as a resident, the organization of regions will only obfuscate any rational approach to creating an itinerary.
Relatively few recommendations of restaurants and lodging appear. This matters because so much of the book's territory is the road more traveled. Get a guide that provides lots of ideas. Because you are not deviating much (if at all) from the beaten path, you'll want a lot of information and options.
A number of the nooks and crannies I hold sacred around the state blessedly do not appear in this book. Yet they are covered in glorious detail on the Web. Some pointers can be found in various official sites: state tourism, city and county governments, the National Park Service. Colorado is a great place to visit and, honestly, a wonderful place to live. Some of the best places truly are on roads less traveled. If that is your interest, this is not your book.

For travelers looking to avoid crowd, this guide will help them discover the unique "must-see" attractions of the Centennial State. Go beyond the usual tourist attractions to discover such hidden treasures as the Pearl Street Pedestrian Mall, the Cross Orchards Living History Farm, or the Mountain Biking Hall of Fame and Museum. Whatever you do when you get to Colorado, get off the interstate-and take this book with you!
Customer Reviews:
Not the Best.......2004-01-09
The author seems to ramble when describing some places that are a "must see". For example, 3 full pages were spent describing a climbing trip, describing only one rock face feature in Boulder, while there were many other places that tourists may be interested in, were not even given a mention. Overall, I found this to be a disappointing travel guide. There are better out there, keep on looking. You never know, you may actually find something that is "off the beaten path".
Ok, but misleading.......2000-05-15
This is a decent guidebook to Colorado; focusing on places to see rather than meals or lodging. However, it would be more properly titled "Colorado: ON the Beaten Path", since it generally spends its time on the most popular attractions.
Book Description
Colorado has a wealth of unique things to see and do: venture 1,000 feet underground at the Country Boy Mine in Breckenridge; indulge in the pools at Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs; or attend a ski rodeo in Steamboat Springs.
Product Description
The name Colorado brings to mind images of the Rocky Mountains, but the state has many other faces, from forbidding deserts to oceans of prairie to wide-open parks. Colorado Less Traveled journeys through these lesser known and less crowded, but no less awesome and beautiful - parts of Colorado. Photographer Jim Steinberg's tendency to take the roads less traveled inspired this book, a celebration of Colorado's "other" landscapes. Susan J. Tweit's essays give voice to Jim's stunning photographs. Her words and Jim's photos together evoke a world we want to know.
Customer Reviews:
Really Nice Coffee Table Book.......2007-05-18
Really nice photos for coffee table book. It will guide my exploration of the state.
Spectacular.......2006-01-06
This spectacular book is rewarding on every level possible. If you wanted a book that merely included gorgeous photos, this would be it. I have seen Jim Steinberg's photos elsewhere, but never presented so lavishly or effectively. They convey such a strong sense of this beautiful PLACE called Colorado. It's all there: meadows, trees, flowers, rocks, canyons, skies, and much more. I was particularly amazed by the wildflowers. When you look at a photo like the one showing why the "Black Canyon" of the Gunnison got its name, you realize that Steinberg has been sure to take all the time necessary for a photographer to capture the essence of a place. The compositions are splendid, full of rich color and detail. Every page is an eye-opener. In addition, Susan Tweit's text is a perfect complement to the images. I wouldn't change a word of it, and I'm a picky reader. Her text combines with the photos to provide an education into the geology, botany, ecology, and history of Colorado, making this not just an aesthetically pleasing book but also an enlightening one. I've been an occasional visitor to Colorado, but this book makes me feel that I've explored quite a bit of it. And the travelers notes at the end will make it much easier to see these places myself. I highly recommend this book to people who already love Colorado and to those who can appreciate it from afar.
Fantastic!.......2005-12-30
Even though I have seen so many things in Colorado, this book made me realize I haven't seen it all. The book is a must-have for people interested in beautiful scenery.
Breath of fresh air.......2005-12-23
This book shows the REAL colorado. If you want to see something
beyond Aspen and Vail, this is the book for you. There are even
directions on how to get to the places so if you are adventurous
enough, you can go out and see it all yourself. The pictures are
amazing and the nature essays put it all in perspective. Having grown
up in NYC, this book is a breath of fresh air!
The best Colorado book out there!.......2005-12-23
This book is incredible. It's unlike any other photography book about Colorado that I've seen. The photographs are spectacular and the writing by Susan Tweit is an eloquent compliment to the photos. The book is broken down into six sections: the plains, foothills, mountain peaks, plateaus, mountain parks and travelers' notes. I especially liked the travelers' notes, which give very specific directions on how to get to all the places. The next time I have the chance, I plan to get out and visit some of the places myself. If you love Colorado or beautiful photography, then this book is a must for your coffee table!

I love the way this book is laid out, with cities and their restaurants. This book also features coupons to those restaurants if you bring your book in. Book is well organized, and couple of recipes that I have tried have been good. Book does feature some color photos which are a great guide in preparing the recipes.

Fodor's Guide to Colorado.......2005-08-24
This book was essential to our wonderful trip. I was able to focus on the things that really interested me, and I actually suprised my relatives who live in the area with some little-known places thanks to the book. It is full of useful info and great travel tidbits.
Excellent!.......2005-05-02
Excellent book-- very thorough-- very informative.
You can't go wrong with a Fodor's travel guide- they definitely know their stuff!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Thorough, informative, fun.......1999-05-16
I really liked this guide. It was pretty much on the mark and crammed a lot into a small book. Much easier handling than other books on Colorado and gives a sense of the personality of each town and resort, if not always enough in-depth info on recreation.
Book Description
The story of Gouverneur Morris, the brilliant and unconventional Founding Father from New York, is a forgotten jewel in the crown of early American national history. Although he was an important contributor to our Constitution, Morris has generally received little respect or attention from historians. The reason for this long indifference lies primarily in the most powerful but misunderstood episode of Morris’s life: his experience as American minister to France during the height of the French Revolution. Envoy to the Terror is the first in-depth study of Morris’s time in France (1789-94), and it convincingly discredits many longstanding myths about his performance as a diplomat.
Morris arrived in Paris on business in 1789, just before the Revolution began. He quickly became involved in French politics and soon was advising not only the reformers, led by the Marquis de Lafayette, but King Louis XVI himself. His empathy for France deepened when he fell passionately in love with a beautiful aristocrat, and by the time of his appointment as U.S. minister he was too deeply enmeshed in French affairs to extricate himself. During the turbulent summer of 1792, Morris was involved in plots to help the king escape. When Louis was dethroned, Morris was the only diplomat to remain in Paris, and he coped single-handed with a flood of pleas for help from people in danger from the Terror.
Melanie Randolph Miller’s research reveals that, contrary to the charges of Morris’s contemporaries, which have been adopted by many historians, Morris conducted himself throughout one of history’s greatest cataclysms with superb diplomatic skill, compassion, and a determination to preserve French-American amity. While conventional wisdom has been that Morris was recalled due to misconduct and inability, this book establishes that it was instead the result of unfounded denunciations by secret adversaries, including Thomas Paine and John Adams’s son-in-law, who viewed Morris as an obstacle to their ambitions and schemes in France.
Envoy to the Terror brings to life the fascinating and dangerous intrigues of the French Revolution and provides a profound reinterpretation of Morris’s role in one of the most important periods of America’s early diplomatic history.
Customer Reviews:
Miller on Morris.......2006-08-23
An expansion and refinement of the author's Ph.D. dissertation on the diplomacy of Gouverneur Morris during very troubled times in Paris.
Gouverneur Morris was an intelligent man of solid good sense, with an obvious love for life. Dr. Miller, as befits one holding a law degree, writes as an advocate for the historical reputation of this important figure from our country's early days. In my opinion, she wins her case.
Anyone interested in the diplomatic efforts of our country in its infancy will enjoy this book.
I hope that the talented Dr. Miller will continue writing graceful books on equally interesting subjects.
Still Relevant Today.......2005-03-05
We learn to see our future by looking at our past, and contemporary French and American relations--as they relate to French censure for America's enlarging foreign policy and the U.S. zeal for "democratization" of the larger world--can be viewed in greater focus by narrowing in on the history of our two countries during the French Revolution and the French `Terror' that followed it. The American diplomat pivotal to this period-the only one on whom Washington could depend for analysis of what was happening abroad-was Gouverneur Morris, today one of the lesser known founding fathers, who as United States Minister to France from 1789-92, during the height of the atrocities taking place there, turned out to be profoundly perspicacious in seeing the terrible future of this, one of America's first adventures in `democracy building,' and its unpredictable, and sometimes terrible results. In Dr. Melanie Miller's insightful revisiting of the historical record of relations between the United States and France during this fateful and terrible period, as set down in her recent biography of Gouverneur Morris, Envoy to the Terror, Dr. Miller tells us much that is relevant to French and American relations today.
Revisionist View of Morris.......2005-02-11
This well-written and lively book should go a long way in restoring Gouverneur Morris to his rightful place among the Founding Fathers. The prickly Morris has had a pretty bad press over the years, but Envoy to the Terror provides a vigorous, in places brilliant, and ultimately convincing defense of Morris' conduct. Miller shows how Morris energetically defended America's interests under extraordinarily difficult circumstances and successfully disproves charges made both at the time and by later historians that his term as minister to France was a failure.
So you thought you knew the Founding Fathers. .......2005-02-09
Gouverneur Morris may be the virtually unknown, underrated key to understanding the American Revolution, and this exciting new book tells his story from a fresh viewpoint. Thorough-going scholarship combines with bright and lively prose to bring Morris to life and set the record straight on his role in the establishment of the American Experiment. Dr. Miller shows that the conventional view of Morris has been much too limited and is due for thorough revision. This study is much more thorough than the recent popularizing biography of Morris by Richard Brookhiser. If you liked that book, which acknowledges Miller's ground-breaking research, you should read this one to learn the whole story. This book is invaluable for serious students of the Revolutionary period.
Understanding Gouverneur: A Compelling Read.......2005-01-27
Gouverneur Morris has been a long underrated yet instrumental figure during important times. He took a critical part in the constitutional convention in Philadelphia, and he played as crucial a role as his predecessor, Thomas Jefferson, in his position as U.S. ambassador to France during the Terror, when French and American citizens alike sought his intervention, hoping to avoid losing their heads by guillotine. The author provides plausible explanations for this strange obscurity. Melanie Randolph Miller does much to humanize Morris's daily life, times and dilemmas, not to mention the big and small events of the French revolutionary era, deftly weaving into her text original and previously unknown sources, such as his own meticulously kept diaries, letters to and from his mistress, Adele Filleul, comtesse of Flahaut and other paramours, and urgent communications with key protagonists: the falling and fallen royal couple, Danton, Robespierre and the Girondins, among many others. The author's prose is brilliantly precise, enhanced by a dry and intelligent wit, and I agree with reviewers that the book is written with "the discipline of a historian but a novelist's eye," "a page turner." I admit that I found myself dragging my heels as I read along because, truth be told, I didn't really want to finish. In the final stretch, I stayed up way past my bedtime, skimming excitedly to learn what happened in the end, even though of course I already knew. I recommend Envoy to the Terror to anyone with more than a passing interest in the events of revolutionary Paris.

Complete & accurate.......2004-07-29
This is a great book written by experts who have been involved with the breed for decades. This book was a project by the Dalmatian Club of America (DCA), which has been the breed's AKC national parent club since 1905. No stone was left unturned when covering the true nature and essence of the Dalmatian. The book is a large, attractive volume that covers every topic you can think of related to Dals. The book was written in the late '90s & the DCA staff went to great lenghts to get first-hand scientific research rather than just relaying old, outdated thoughts. Absolutely the best book available for all people who love Dalmatians!
A library treasure and a "must have" to own a dalmation!.......1999-12-13
The book is reasonably comprehensive. The authors have included the dalmation's history, a detail analysis and drawings of judging criteria, and a wonderful section on the animal's nature and traits. Whether you would like to have a friend just to run with, or to own a show dog, this book with it's plentiful color photographs and illustrations is a "must"!
A fabulous, exhaustive, must-have guide to Dalmatians!.......1998-06-24
This book is worth every penny--and much more! The authors have put together an excellent reference on every topic pertaining to Dalmatians: important kennels and breeders organized by era; health peculiarities of the Dalmatian; showing (including tracking, road trials, obedience, agility and conformation); the history of the Dalmatian Club of America; how to choose a puppy (and whether a Dalmatian is right for you)--and all beautifully and lavishly illustrated with color photographs. This is a definitive guide to the breed.

From the creators of the wildly popular book, The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions comes a second inventive collection of wild potions and crazy crafts--all easily and inexpensively made from common household items. Kids should have a ball creating such wonders as an edible ocean (gummy fish suspended in Jell-O) or a greenhouse grown in a plastic bag. Among the 78 recipes are instructions for making such revolutionary new artistic mediums as whipped cream finger paint, dryer lint clay, and toothpaste putty. Quite a few of the concoctions are edible--chocolate bowls and fruity leather roll-ups sound particularly delicious--while others make great party activities or simple gifts. Almost all the concoctions make a perfect diversion for a bored child on a rainy afternoon. The simple, well-organized instructions make the book easy for kids ages 8 and up to use, though the authors call for adult supervision on all recipes. This is the kind of craft book that's bound to become a family favorite--in time, its large-format black and white pages should be covered with the residue of many hours of messy fun. This is a fun concept for a book. However, if you live somewhere warm or plan to do these activities during the summer, many of them contain sugar or some kind of food. It screams "ant magnet" to me and for that reason I have not made anything except the spaghetti sculpture which never dried!

"I want to plant a herb garden!"
That's how I felt after reading this book!
I learnt that herbs are beautiful, useful & so colorful, yet they are easy to grow.
The book shows many pictures so you know how the herbs look & how to arrange them. It also introduces other herbs that you may have forgotten about. The book chapters make it easy & helpful to look through, chapters such as: herbs that seed, salads, tea, silver colored herbs, flowering, scented etc.
At the end there are tips on planting, freezing & drying. Also a few herb recipes that look delicious, but I haven't tried them yet.
All in all a beautiful book to look at

Buy It.......2007-02-21
The cool thing about this book is that it isn't corny. After we went through it, I realized that I knew the answers to most of the questions but it was good to revisit them and then be able to say Okay.... I am ready to get married. Plus your partner will be nicely surprised to know how much he has been sharing, you actually remembered about him.
Good Questions - Often Overlooked!.......2007-01-07
As a part-time minister who helps couples design and compose their own wedding ceremonies, I found this book helpful - as a 'tickler' to me in my interviewing and working with couples as well as a book to recommend to couples who are thinking about getting married. In my day job, as a therapist, I see too many couples who did not take the time to ask themselves and each other some of these important questions before deciding to marry.
This book can be helpful if given without judgment in the spirit of friendship and support.
Get it...Do it.......2006-02-18
If I had read and answered the questions in this book before I got married the first time, I most likely would have not married my first wife and it would have saved us a lot of heart ache. This second time around, not married yet, I am going through all the questions of this book and they are very poignant and practical. Every couple contemplating marriage needs to buy this, read it, answer all the questions together. It will give them a better picture of the realities they will be facing as a married couple and it will cause them to reflect and ponder the real issues perhaps causing the poor thinking due to infatuation to subside. I highly recommend it.
A Good Beginning Point for Serious Couples.......2005-09-10
This has been a great tool in getting my boyfriend and I to talk through different issues before marriage. Some of the questions we've skipped over simply because we knew the answers already. Others we've asked before, but it's always good to get a refresher! Other questions were ones we've never thought of before, which are exciting to ask.
I would recommend this book for any couple who is seriously thinking about marriage because it gives a bunch of ideas for you and your special someone to talk about to get to know one another better. It's also a good tool to help determine whether you guys are really right for one another. There is also a section of questions to ask family and friends, which is nice.
Still good stuff!!!.......2005-04-07
I received the book through Amazon's Marketplace, at a reduced price. The sender the very courteous and the book was sent in a timely manner and in very good shape. Thanks Larry! I've already glanced through the book and, wow!....I'm impresssed with the content. I'm looking forward to sharing those questions with my new-found friend. Yes, I'm liking him in that way :).
Thanks Amazon...and thanks again Larry. Kudos to you.

It gets you talking.......2007-09-26
I purchased this book for a friend who's in a commmitted relationship heading down the marriage path. The questions are really just things to start a couple talking about issues that are most important when you try to combine two lives and raise a family together. I liked this book because it covered the largest spectrum of issues.
Book Description
Beginning in the 1970s, Andy Warhol collected and stored the remains of his most unusual life in 612 brown cardboard boxes, the so-called Time Capsules. To date, only 100 of these boxes have been opened and examined. Everything Warhol deemed interesting and worth keeping--from precious objects to the most quotidian of souvenirs--was gathered together in these prosaic containers. The collecting strategy was straightforward enough: Warhol would keep an open box beside his desk, dropping in the daily flood of correspondence, magazines and newspapers, gifts, photographs, business records, collectibles, and ephemera that passed through his hands. This Time Capsule in progress would be taped shut and dated by an assistant when Warhol deemed it complete. Today, Warhol's leftovers provide us with the possibility for entering the atmosphere and curious cosmos of a life whose 15 minutes of fame may never really end, despite its physical end having long since passed. This first publication of Warhol's most personal diary will help the careful reader to reconstruct the artist's personality. Each and every item contained in Time Capsule 21 is meticulously revealed. This particular box was chosen because it contains a phenomenal amount of Warhol's art from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as common documents that have turned out to reveal facts about Warhol's life and work--that have, for instance, led to the dating of the drawing Dead Stop (1954) and the establishment of an approximate date for Warhol's first meeting with Leo Castelli. Also included are many images that Warhol used for source material. Leafing through Time Capsule 21, the reader has only to let each object take him or her on a journey into the murky past of The Factory, Studio 54, and Warhol's other haunts.

"Box 21" is an interesting package, but not something I'm likely to ever go through again. It's interesting only the first time 'round.
The people left in charge of Warhol's world are trying so hard to make money from it. They are sure to be selling each and every "time capsule" he kept. It's a way to keep themselves going and what he would have wanted.
The people in charge of Warhol are not to be trusted. I suggest anyone wanting to really learn about him not buy anything from the Warhol institute, foundation, museum, whatever guise his money is still feeding them.
Believe me, if this book had been good, I'd be praising it. Don't waste your money. Although Warhol would've liked it if you had.
Just in time.......2005-08-29
Brought to us with care by a colloboration between the Andy Warhol Museum and a German museum, the Museum for Modern Kunst.
Currently (August, 2005) you can see an online exhibition of this time capsule at the Andy Warhol Museum web site. There's information about just 50 of the time capsule objects (more info than in this book for those 50), including not just text but also audio and video. You can see and hear Andy and Candy Darling among others. You can also zoom in on an object, which you will wish you could do with many the picutures of many objects in the book. Even with a good magnifying glass, some writing may not be readable, being either too light or too much a scrawl.
The book is well-packaged with good binding, cover, layout, foreword and guided tour of the time capsule. The text of the contexts is at the end of the book, which does give more room to depict the object in the main body of the book, but means having to go back and forth to the back in order to learn a little about the object. The text for each object is sparse, but you often learn, for example, just who it is in a certain photo. Unfortunately, the text often doesn't tell you any more than the picture does. To be really helpful, the 7-page guide could have been considerably longer.
As it is, this book provides a good sense of how diverse Warhol's interests were. It will take a good deal of time to get to know all the objects and, to do that well, may take searching around for supplementary info. Who's Roslyn Drexler, subject of several photo strips? Who's David Tudor, who presented new piano works?
Who's Andy Warhol and what do all these objects from just this one time capsule, tell us about him?
After reading this, you may very well feel ready to begin filling your own time capsules. As a supplement to or alternative for, a diary, it seems an easy but effective way to capture an interval in your development. Ten years from now, you may find your own time capsules more engaging than Andy's.
Boxing.......2004-05-12
Ok, we all know Andy Warhol kept everything, but how boring is that? Not so boring at all, as it turns out. Maybe the Warhol Museum picked the best time-capsule box, maybe they are all full of interesting goodies, but box number 21 is a doozey. And everything Andy packed away is there on the page ready to comb over, connect to paintings, make assumptions and check out like any well trained obsessive. For fans of Warhol this book is a must and the best of fun. Lots of pics, not too much elevated art talk and beautifully produced.
