An entertaining armchair voyage on Lake Superior.......2006-11-23
Author Marlin Bree takes his sailboat "Persistence" on a Voyage along Lake Superior's south shore. Along the way, he relates his experiences and encounters with local inhabitants, sharing the history and lore of the lake. Each chapter includes a map tracing the author's progress from the Apostle Islands to Sault Ste. Marie, including a visit to Whitefish Point and the "graveyard of the Lakes" where the Edmund Fitzgerald sank.
Reading this book was like taking my own vacation along the South Shore, and I greatly enjoyed it.
An outstanding book on sailing Lake Superior........2000-08-03
Marlin Bree has authored an outstanding book about sailing on Lake Superior. Call Of The North Wind: Voyages & Adventures On Lake Superior is the story of Bree's crisscrossing Lake Superior in his home-built 20-foot wood sailboat and a 35-foot catamaran. Call Of The North Wind weaves stories of adventure, travel and history along with reconstructions of unusual shipwrecks and doomed crews, voyaging the lake on a Viking ship, tracking a sunken vessel, watching another boat sink, facing storms, and meeting interesting people living alongside the lake.
One sailor 's adventures on the world's greatest lake.......1998-10-08
Storms, shipwrecks, waterfront characters --- all on Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake. This is a fascinating story of a chilly frontier of water and weather. Sail magazine rated this sailor's previous book (In the Teeth of the Northeaster: A solo voyage on Lake Superior) as "...fascinating." I hope other readers will find it so, too!

Mandatory reading.......2007-02-26
The four published reviews of this book are rather biased and show that the reviewers did not internalize what the author wrote. They stand in stark contrast to the 7 personal reviews. I couldn't put this book down. In a very personal way the author and his real experiences embody the reality of the co-existence, or lack thereof, in judea and samaria today. Stangely enough, shortly after a friend insisted I read this book I have shared tea with Era in his home and with his neighbors in Turmis Aya that he descibes in the book and to independently hear them tell the same stories he tells in the book.
This book should be required reading for anyone that wants to offer an opinion about the future of Samaria.
inredible book.......2003-05-11
this book is intriging. it makes you wonder about the other side of the media. letters from tel mond prison is a book written by a man who lives his life with such pupose, meaning and honesty you wonder some times who you feel bad for - the "terrorist" or the "victim"
Inspiring Faith.......2003-05-05
Era Rapaport effectively communicates the highs and lowes of being a settler in the land of Israel today. He is a modern day Zionist who gave up a life of comfort to face ridicule, persecution and imprisonment to stay true to his faith in the resettlement of Eretz Israel. I highly recommend this book to all who love Zion and believe in the restoration of Israel.
A Tale of The Human Spirit.......2001-06-17
This book takes what has become a controvertial impersonal topic and turns it into a tale of the human spirit. Era was an the average American. He had the normal life, but he choose to follow the path G-d choose for him. His acts of desperation would be called terrorism by the media, but it is only after reading this book that one understands he was an everday guy defending his family. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining a true first hand perspective of life in the West Bank.
Powerful honest portrayal of life in Israel.......2000-08-05
Mr. Rapaport's book is one of the few honest accounts of life in Israel today. Unlike reporters who have very little understanding of the complexities of life in Israel, Mr. Rapaport lives in the heart of Israel, and has a great understanding of the problems his country encounters daily. You can't go wrong reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
The knitting spirit is optimistic.......2007-09-18
Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitter's Almanac
I have read the book through as a novel, and a novel it is. Zimmermanns travels with her Old Man, fishing in beautiful lakes, canoing, all while the knitting and plan making for new projects popping up in her head. I celebrate the 50th anniversary for my first knitted garment, and what havent I learnt! Nodding when she tells me things that I found out long ago, and laughing when she tells about how easy you can do things. Her optimistic way of looking at problems impresses me. I will never start the long-tail cast-on with a knot anymore ...
You can't go wrong...........2007-08-23
This is such a value! I read the book cover-to-cover, including Zimmerman's written out patterns. She is amazing.
Getting to know Elizabeth Zimmerman.......2007-07-27
The book is a really enchanting introduction to the work of Elizabeth Zimmerman. Before needing to buy this title for a Knitalong, I had never heard of this knitter. I'm so glad I bought the book, since I find myself learning more about knitting as I read.
various knitting patterns.......2007-07-23
A good Zimmermann read about knitting---with good pattern ideas. This is a Dover publication in black and white. Not extensive, but nice.
Fantastic gem with some really outstanding classic designs .......2007-06-18
Left to my own devices, I would had never bought this book. It's missing so many of things that I find essential like (1) schematics, of which there are none whatsoever (2) sizing is offered in general terms. with things like 'babies are different size' (3) The yarn is also offered in general terms, 3 ozs of worsted weight with stitch tension, nothing to allude to the meterage/yardage or row tension. (4) All the photos are in black and white and nothing is displayed on a model. (5) Instructions are brief and may require some interpretation.
However, I had to point out that this is a fabulous book. The designs are classics that are both pretty and wearable. I can easily see the baby cardigan and hat being a favourite. The fair-isle mittens are very wearable and easy to execute. The aran cardigan is superb and stylish. The pi shawl is elegant and worked in cotton or linen would also make a fantastic table cloth. I'm not sure how practical or comfortable the wool leggings would be, but I suppose that depends on where you live.
The anedoctal style and wandering style of writing adds to the charm. In addition to being extremely talented, EZ must had also been quite a character. Her no-nonsense approach to babies and shetland wool, cleverness in infiltrating wool into non-wool jumpers to test the wool allergy theory and love for 'the old man' shone through the book.
While I would recommend this book to all knitters, I would not recommend the projects to most beginners, especially those that require a lot of precision in their patterns. If you would like to see coloured photos/modelled of these projects or the projects worked up in current yarns (with yarn quantities), you can do so here [...].
Customer Reviews:
a good read as well as knit.......2003-12-27
This is the first knitting book that I've wanted to sit down and read, not just use for the patterns.
Its insightful, full of information, but its not just thrown at you. She writes as if she's having a conversation with you. I feel like I'm sitting down with someone to chat about knitting and come up with a few patterns.
This is definitely a book worth having in my knitting library
Full of gems of knitting wisdom.......2001-01-03
This is a little book that is full of big thoughts on knitting. The structure is a chapter for each month. Each chapter is more or less equal parts conversation about knitting in general and then a pattern that is suitable for the month.
The real reason to read and reread this book lies in the openings of each chapter. January talks about guage in aran sweaters. Sounds technical, right? Well, Elizabeth (or EZ as many knitters call her) chats with you through the thought process rather than lecturing you. Later on, EZ opens a discussion of knitting in the dark as follows: "What? You can't knit in the dark? Stuff and nonsense; anybody can. Shut your eyes. Knit one stitch...."
The patterns are a mixed bag. Some of the adult sweaters look a little dated but the book includes some timeless classics such as the layette and mocassin socks.
Finally, at the risk of offending out host (Amazon), be sure to check with EZ's daughter Meg Swansen at Schoolhouse Press before you give up searching for this book. If anyone would have a stash of them for sale, it would be Meg.

Full of solid, practical advice and plenty of how-to pictures, Paths and Paving is an ideal title for those looking to create all kinds of walkways and edgings. Materials include casual railroad ties and stones of all kinds, as well as more formal bricks, tiles, and handcrafted stepping stones.
Designed to be a complete do-it-yourself guide, don't let the small format of this book fool you--it's absolutely jam-packed with ideas for all styles of gardens, and as always, publisher Dorling Kindersley manages to take fairly complicated projects and reduce them to a manageable size that even the home improvement novice can handle. The aim of this book is to get you professional-quality results, and if you follow directions carefully, you'll get the job done beautifully. Inspirational ideas are plentiful--the garden photographs are lush and detailed, and provide all kinds of unusual notions for creating a truly unique gardening space. Whether you're looking to add a simple gravel walkway, or formal patterned brick areas between raised beds, you'll find options for all your projects that will set your plants off beautifully with striking combinations of textures and materials. --Jill Lightner

Fair Content, Horrible Editing.......2007-03-16
We are in the process of adopting internationally and thought this book would be a good resource. The information was good, if a little narrow at times. The thing that distracted me the most was the editing: the authors will cover an idea, then rehash it several times, often using the same wording, sometimes within the same page.
Even worse (to me) were the gramatical, spelling, and punctuation errors - in abundance! I found one at least every 3-4 pages, and in a 400 page book that becomes very distracting very quickly.
The best advice I can give is to read it for it's point of view (if you are not too annoyed by the editing), but take many things with a grain of salt and form your own opinions on how to raise your child.
Negative, Overgeneralized, Poorly Written.......2004-11-29
I only read through the first third of the book before I had to give up on it. Often the authors overgeneralize - they take a statement made to them by one person of color and then say that all people of color feel the same way. That's not only counterproductive, it borders on perpetuating racism.
They have a very negative mindset that I find to be discouraging. My husband and I are considering transracial adoption of an older child; if I continue to read this book, I am certain they would talk me out of it.
Plus, I find this book to be very poorly written. It lacks any coherent organization. This book is in desperate need of an editor. Even if you agree with their approach to the issues, the typos, poor grammar and lack of structure will certainly make it difficult to follow their thought process. Unless James Joyce's stream of consciousness writing style is appealing to you, you will not enjoy the way the authors jump topics every other paragraph.
There are much better books dealing with these issues available. The only redeeming quality of this book is the quotes from children and adults who were raised in multiracial families.
great book!.......2004-06-08
This was the best book I read on transracial adoption. The authors not only are experts in the field but have experienced it personally. You should not adopt a child of another race without reading this book.
Great Advice.......2003-09-11
When I read this book, I wish I were young again and could adopt children from other races. We went the "easy" way and adopted a baby in 1969 that matched our skin, but did not then proceed to adopt a second transracial child. Frankly, at that time, we would not have been up to the challenge. Today, I see white families in our neighborhood one of which has adopted two black boys who give me hugs when I walk by their house, and the other, next door, have a Chinese and Korean girl. This is wonderful progress which I feel in my own veins. I heartily recommend Steinberg's and Hall's strategies of "concrete tools for operating in a racist world."
Gisela Gasper Fitzgerald, author of ADOPTION: An Open, Semi-Open or Closed Practice?
Know what you're getting into.......2002-05-17
I've just finished slogging through this book and I was very disappointed in it as it is tagged as the best book on "transracial" adoption available. The book is really very narrow and I found it almost totally useless in my wife's and my situation (we are adopting a child from Haiti). Looking at some of the other reviews, it appears that we weren't alone.
The book is the result of two families' experiences with adopting non-white children and their attempts at integrating them into their families. What comes through loud and clear in the book is that the author's were expecting that the children would come out perfectly because they were loved and wanted. The parents seemed to be very insulated from modern society and reluctant (or unable?) to talk to people of their childrens' cultures.
As a step parent to two partially South Asian boys already, I was appalled at the reactive nature of the families in the book rather than looking ahead and being prepared for developmental stages and cultural/race problems. I would have had a lot more confidence in it (and the authors) if they had explained what they had done to prepare for problems to sail through them as comfortably as possible (from both their perspectives as well as their children's).
The book is painfully white middle-America with virtually no discussion of living in a multi-cultural city. It repeats a lot of information that can be found and explained better in other child-rearing books. For my wife and I (who live in a large very multi-cultural city and already have children), we found the material on Black hair care to be the most useful part of the book.
Having said all this, "Inside Transracial Adoption" is probably the best book available on the subject. This is unfortunate because I do not believe that it is anywhere as good as it should be.
Before buying a copy, I suggest that you sit down with it and make sure that it is appropriate for your situation and family. Otherwise you'll end up like I did, skimming through the book looking for something that made me feel like I was justified in buying it.
Book Description
This fascinating memoir, written by one of the greatest American violinists of the twentieth century, recounts an extraordinary life in music. Foreword by Jim Svejda.
Once called by the New York Times "a violinist's violinist and a musician's musician," Louis Kaufman was born in 1905 in Portland, Oregon. He studied violin with Franz Kneisl at New York's Institute of Musical Art. He was the original violist of the Musical Art Quartet (1926-1933) and won the Naumburg Award in 1928, the year of his American solo recital debut in New York's Town Hall.
During these early years, he played chamber music with Pablo Casals, Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler, Gregor Piatigorsky, and Efrem Zimbalist, among others. After performing the violin solos for Ernst Lubitsch's 1934 film The Merry Widow, Kaufman became the most sought after violin soloist in Hollywood, playing in some 500 films, including Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, The Diary of Anne Frank, Wuthering Heights, The Grapes of Wrath, and Spartacus. He worked closely with Robert Russell Bennett, Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Alfred Newman, Miklós Rózsa, Max Steiner, Franz Waxman, and Victor Young.
Extraordinary as it seems today, Kaufman was largely responsible for bringing the once-forgotten music of Antonio Vivaldi to its current popularity worldwide among both classical musicians and the general population of music lovers. Louis Kaufman was a 2002 Grammy Hall of Fame inductee for his 1949 recording of Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons
The book includes a music CD with Kaufman's performances of Vivaldi's Concerto 2 of op. 9, Havanaise by Camille Saint Saëns, Nocturne for Violin and Piano by Aaron Copland, Much Ado about Nothing Suite for Violin and Piano by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Jerome Kern, among other favorites.
Customer Reviews:
Not that interesting.......2007-04-23
Given the fact that Louis Kaufman is "the most heard violinist in history" (thanks to his career as concertmaster of film studio orchestras),
I was expecting quite a bit more out of this thick, dust-jacketed volume.
There are some great anecdotes and interesting material about Kaufman's early days as a young violinist studying with the great pedagogue Kneisel in New York, moving out to Hollywood, hearing the scores for such films as "Gone With the Wind" WHILE they were being written, finding unknown opuses by Vivaldi, and premiering new works. However, this is all surrounded by uninteresting, self-important material about all the expensive artwork and stuff he was buying with his checks from the film recordings, and the world traveling that he and his wife Annette were doing and the people they met. There's even a separately inserted color-plate section in the book of his favorite paintings!! As a violinist, I'd much rather have had a shorter volume that cut out all the extraneous stuff and just focused on his life as a musician.
Just me. (Who's that Heifetz guy?).......2007-03-09
Bought this book for an elderly professional musician who's heard all the virtuosos, and knew some of them pretty well. He considered this book disappointing, and little more than a puff-piece, one long "press-agent's blurb".There are many much better first-person books about the world and life of great violinists.
Interesting history many people probably don't know about.......2005-09-07
This memoir was written by one of the greatest American violinists of the twentieth century, and he recounts an extraordinary life in music. Born in 1905, Louis Kaufman studied and played violin with many of the big names of that era. He eventually became the most sought after violin soloist in Hollywood, playing in around 500 films, including Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, The Diary of Anne Frank, Wuthering Heights, The Grapes of Wrath, and Spartacus. The book includes a music CD with Kaufman's performances.
A passion for music and art.......2004-01-18
Lovers of the violin and modern art will enjoy this fascinating story of Louis Kaufman (1905-1994), known as "a violinist's violinist" during his career from the 1920s to the 1970s, and one of the first American violinists to be celebrated worldwide. Mr. Kaufman tells about making music here and in Europe with many of the top musicians of the 20th Century. Louis and Annette Kaufman were also great collectors of art, focusing on Milton Avery and other modern artists, and their passion for art is also in this book. Mr. Kaufman can be heard on many of the classic movies of the 1930s and 40s, when he worked in Hollywood as concertmaster and soloist in films such as "To Have and Have Not," "Top Hat," and "Key Largo." He was also a leader in the rediscovery of the violin concertos of Vivaldi, and an enthusiastic exponent of many works by contemporary composers. A CD of selections from Louis Kaufman's recordings ranging from Vivaldi to Copland comes with the book.
disappointing.......2003-09-19
The book doesn't do justice to its author. There's little to really sink your teeth into. Svejda's Foreward says: "If it weren't for Kaufman, the best-known cue in the history of film music - Tara's Theme from Gone with the Wind - would not have been heard so expressively, but that's another story and one far better told by the violinist himself."
But "the violinist himself" hardly tells the story at all! "One Sunday morning, Max [Steiner] called unexpectedly. "Louis, are you free today?" "Yes, Max." "Come right over with your violin. I have some themes to submit to Selznick for Gone with the Wind. He wants to hear them. It's not very interesting with just piano." Annette and I drove to Max's home, where he had set up a small recording machine. Max and I tried out and played over the themes for Scarlett, Rhett, Melanie, Tara, etc. Selznick enthusiastically approved these samples."
Jim Svejda couldn't tell that story?
Disappointing.
