Extremely useful book -- for as far as it goes.......2003-05-25
When we scheduled a trip to the Black Forest last year, we rushed to get a copy of this book so we could have a wine- and travel-guide local to the area. (Plus, we really like Pigott's other book on German wine, which is now regrettably out of print.)
There's many things to like about this book, even if you aren't a wine snob. (I'm far from knowledgeable -- I simply like German wine, so I want a guide that'll tell me how to use my time and taste buds wisely.)
The book is organized into geographies, such as "Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg" or "Ortenau." Each section describes the overall characteristics of the area. ("Whichever the soil type, the Pinot family of grapes accounts for a good two thirds of all plantings.") It also provides a list of recommended producers, hotels and restaurants, and places of interest. These descriptions are very short, usually a single paragraph, so don't assume you can get away without a regular guide book as well. The pictures are lovely, too, assuming that you're the kind of person who likes to look at photos of vineyards.
The reviews don't pull their punches, and they give a sense of each place's value ("Excellent meat dishes and good ocean fish... fairly expensive food; moderately priced rooms") so you know what you're getting into. I don't think I happened to visit any of the recommended hotels or restaurants, so I can't tell you how accurate they are.
However, the irksome part of the book is its brevity when the details matter. Perhaps I'm used to having my hand held more than they think I need. When we wanted to find a winery that was listed, we had no idea where to look on the regional map. (Germany has a lot of *tiny* towns.) Nor did I have any idea what to expect in regard to wine tasting customs. Accustomed to the well-marked signs in northern California, I was surprised by how much I had to search for the wine tasting room for the recommended co-op I'd chosen. (It was definitely worth the quest, however.)
I like this book quite a bit, though I think it's a good title to read before you go rather than to take along.
the best of the best.......2000-05-18
Very interesting book with a beautiful color photos, good data for wine collectors and wine travelers in europa. rates, sites, winerys and high level restaurants in beautiful and friendly Germany.

Book Description
A compelling biography of one of the most notorious Mexican heroes (or bandidos, as some say), Francisco Villa, who has the dubious honour of leading the only foreign army that has ever invaded the US.
Customer Reviews:
A Farewell to Mongrel-Gods.......2003-07-29
What I like most about biographies is that they display the struggle of being a man. I like it when the biographees are somewhat tainted, tragical in the dramatic sense of the word, and yet they are able to surmount themselves and render a moment of true glory.
This biography of the well-known bandido Villa is a good piece of biographical writing. It shows a brutal, ignorant man, able to commit huge cruelties, lusting after power and money, who nevertheless had one big virtue: he knew how to be fatihful to President Madero, in many ways his better.
The life of Villa was full of romance and of military genius of the rustic kind. This book gives thorough comment of Villa's impromptu victories, of his instinctive grasp for tactics. And it helps to penetrate into the mystery of the only man who has ever introduced an invader commando into the United States.

Book Description
In many modern wars, there have been those who have chosen not to fight. Be it for religious or moral reasons, some men and women have found no justification for breaking their conscientious objection to violence. In many cases, this objection has led to severe punishment at the hands of their own governments, usually lengthy prison terms. Peter Brock brings the voices of imprisoned conscientious objectors to the fore in These Strange Criminals.
This important and thought-provoking anthology consists of thirty prison memoirs by conscientious objectors to military service, drawn from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and centring on their jail experiences either during the first or second world wars or in Cold War America. Voices from history - like those of Stephen Hobhouse, Dame Kathleen Lonsdale, Ian Hamilton, Alfred Hassler, and Donald Wetzel - come alive, detailing the impact of prison life and offering unique perspectives on wartime government policies of conscription and imprisonment. Sometimes intensely moving, and often inspiring, these memoirs show that in some cases, individual conscientious objectors - many well-educated and politically aware - sought to reform the penal system from within either by publicizing its dysfunction or through further resistance to authority. The collection is an essential contribution to our understanding of criminology and the history of pacifism, and represents a valuable addition to prison literature.
Book Description
Diverse, extensive, and incredibly beautiful, this awe-inspiring collection features the most magnificent rings ever. With designs that range from the traditional to the very avant-garde, each of the 1,000 examples is an exceptional work of art, finely crafted by the best contemporary jewelers. Rob Jackson mixes antique industrial elements (a 100-year-old wrought iron nail) with radiant 20-karat gold and a glowing ruby for a dynamic visual contrast. Tomomi Arat’s collection, Treasure from Under the Sea, captures the exoticism of ocean life: he uses pearls, enamel, and sand to create rings that look as if they were chiseled directly out of a coral reef. Among the prestigious artisans represented: Arline M. Fisch, Michael Zobel, Katja Prins, Paul Preston, and Bruce Metcalf.

Inspirational.......2007-03-19
This book is absolutely beautiful, with all types of rings from wearable to completely wild. It was so inspirational that after looking at this book I took a metal jewelry class in order to make my own ring!
Inspiring is the best definition................2006-03-10
Inspiring is the best definiton to this book;I am a designer and jeweller and I love rings; I found 1000 original rings as a vademecum of inspiration to develope new ideas.
good book.......2006-03-05
Overall this is a great book. my only complaint is that some of the photos are not of a high enough quality. But really its only a few out of the 1000.
more rings than you will ever have fingers for.......2005-11-03
This series of Lark books is awesome. They are visual essays on a theme. I bought this book for my own information as a jewelry designer and bought one for a friend who is a silversmith. We are both very happy. In retrospect say in 2015 this book will probly look very 2005 but right now it is fresh and visually exciting.
inspirational stuff.......2005-10-13
Hello, I'm a Jeweller living and working in rural Australia. I was so excited by this book. I am participating in an exhibition in Perth later this month called The Ring, the book 1000 Rings was perfect for me. I design and make works for exhibition and contrary to other reviews this book does indeed have some very wearable work in it and some wonderful interpretations of what is or isn't. Still a great platform for my work. Believe me I can't afford to spend days on a piece exhibit it and have it come back a month later! So yes its a great book for the open minded jeweller or otherwise. Beautifully put together and the images are very good. I'm glad there isn't a lot of wording allowing more room for more images.....

Book Description
A history of the world's most famous flower as seen through the lens of master photographer Malak with text by Sonia Day. Tulips: Facts and Foklore About the World's Most Planted Flower celebrates this enduring flower and how it has captured the hearts and imaginations of gardeners and collectors for over five hundred years. Lavishly illustrated with photographs by the world-renowned photographer Malak, Tulips is a stunning pictoral history of the flower's beauty and versatility. Arriving from Turkey and taking Western Europe by storm, tulips have endured and are a mainstay for gardeners and collectors alike, with varieties still grown today that originated in the seventeenth century. Tulips also represent the deep friendship between the Netherlands and Canada, forged by the vagaries of World War II and the role this country played in liberating the Netherlands. Any visitor to Ottawa will marvel at the assortment of tulips adorning the grounds surrounding the Parliament Buildings. Included are numerous photographs that reveal the vast bulb fields of Holland, home of the tulip. Readers will discover many little-known facts about tulips, including the fact that they can be eaten and that there are more than 3,000 varieties grown all over the world in every shade of the rainbow and black varieties as well. Master gardener Sonia Day combines tulip lore with practical tips for growing tulips in your own garden. She shares her extensive knowledge of the subject with readers and offers many ideas and suggestions for successfully and easily cultivating tulips at home.(March 2002)
Book Description
Driven by the desire to help her three-year-old daughter settle down into a peaceful night's sleep, Maureen Garth devised meditations that would help her daughter feel secure and cared for. Starbright is a collection of the stories Garth created as her child grew older. These innovative meditations are simple visualizations parents and teachers can read to their children to help them sleep, develop concentration, awaken creativity, and learn to quiet themselves.
"Unfortunately, a lot of children have trouble learning these techniques by the time they are seven or eight," writes Garth. "Relaxation and visualization, if taught at an earlier age, could enhance not only children's school work but other areas of their lives. Their concentration would improve; their artistic abilities would develop; they would feel more centered; their daydreaming could not only bring joy, but be constructive."
In her engaging, warm, and personal style, Garth teaches parents how to help their children relax, concentrate, and develop artistic and mental abilities, as well as enjoy a good night's sleep.
Customer Reviews:
a must for your spiritual child's collection.......2007-05-31
I purchased this book for my 9 year old daughter who was trying to make the transition back to school this past fall. She had become very anxious and I wanted a way to help her calm herself before she went to bed each night. Together we read the stories and she just loved them. She even brought the book to school to share with her teacher and fourth grade classmates, who loved it too. I really feel it has helped her! (Since then we have given even copies as birhtday gifts with handmade beaded bookmarks.) Overall, Big Hit!
Child begs for reading nightly.......2007-02-02
Before obtaining Starbright, my 6 year old has asked about fires and bombs (school fire drills & TV news)before being tucked into bed. He now insists on being read about the gardens so he doesn't have bad dreams. In the morning, he relates more and more positive dreams.
I am relieved to have his fears reduced in a few short weeks. I think the "sequel" Moonbeam is next on our list. Thank you Ms. Garth.
Great for all children.......2006-12-15
This book and the others by Maureen Garth have been a blessing in our home. My 6 and 8 year old love them. In fact, I'm not sure they can sleep without them anymore! They are quick to jump in bed and settle down so that they are able to find out what happens in their garden each night. Their imaginations are growing and they are relaxing. Both kids have a history of terrible nightmares and neither have mentioned a single bad dream since we begun these exercises. I'm growing in confidence, too! The other night, I actually made up my own garden story and it's been one of their favorite's so far!
For those of you who are concerned about compromising your faith with these books, don't be! On the contrary, the focus on light, growing your heart in love for all people and feeling safe with a guardian angel are all wonderful images and fall right in line with our Christian faith.
I love these books and I have even begun buying them for friends. What a great gift to give a child: the gift of peace, relaxation, imagination and a good night's sleep filled with pleasant dreams.
My kids love this!.......2006-11-10
I had no idea that my kids age 3 and 4 would love meditating this much I am very happy that I purchased this book along with two of her other meditation books. Moonbeam and Earthlight are also fabulous!
Very Well Written!.......2006-10-29
I was looking to relax my child before bed and found this to be the best one I found. Very relaxing, imaginative and well written. Gets my daughter set in a good dream mode.
Book Description
One of the few women Impressionists, Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) had a life of paradoxes: American born, she lived and worked in France; a classically trained artist, she preferred the company of radicals; never married, she painted exquisite and beloved portraits of mothers and children. This book provides new insight into the personal life and artistic endeavors of this extraordinary woman.
Customer Reviews:
The Essential Cassatt Resource.......2006-07-22
Despite Mary Cassatt's continuing resurgence in popularity as an artist since the 1970s, prior to this volume her biographers had missed the boat. As a result, most people who admire Ms. Cassatt's wonderful paintings are filled with inaccurate beliefs about her life and the condition of women artists during her life. If you care enough about her work to want to correct those mistaken beliefs, please do read this volume. You'll also learn even more if you follow that reading by also looking at Cassatt: A Retrospective by the same author, Nancy Mowll Mathews.
Mary Cassatt is an elusive subject for several reasons. She didn't write many letters, often didn't care what others thought of her and wasn't written about by others nearly as often as she deserved. In addition, her role as an iconic woman pioneer in the Impressionist movement has caused many to "interpret" her life to explain other agendas.
The reality is much more interesting than the misinformation. At a young age, she was exposed to the leading cultural events in Europe . . . a rarity for any American. Her mother was probably one of the most intelligent and capable women of her generation anywhere. The family moved around constantly in rented homes to stay close to the various children and business opportunities. Only after her father's death was Ms. Cassatt able to purchase and enjoy a home. Contrary to popular belief today, it wasn't at all unusual for women to pursue painting careers. In fact, the Louvre was full of American women painting copies of the masterpieces there. What was unusual was for a woman to be viewed as the peer of the best male artists. Ms. Cassatt clearly reached that pinnacle during her Impressionist years and beyond. Much to her own disgust, she let herself be led into painting the mother and child paintings that we all love so much by the marketing plans of her gallery . . . rather than her own passion. Although profitable, this path was in her view a diversion from her better work. Paradoxically, Ms. Cassatt's two bothers were even more famous in their day than she was . . . even though we have barely heard of them today. Her older brother was, in fact, one of the most important railroad developers in the eastern United States. As head of the Pennsylvania Railroad, he directed the development of the railroad tunnel into Manhattan.
Ms. Mathews does a nice job of balancing what is known from what is not . . . while pointing out what the possibilities were. As a result of this biography, I felt I knew the real Mary Cassatt for the first time.
Bravo, Ms. Mathews!
Thorough, well researched study of the artist Mary Cassatt........2002-03-27
Ms. Mathews presents Mary Cassatt's entire life and incorporates little known details about her travels and associations with friends and family. She mixes facts, anecdotes and reflections on society in such an easily readable way that even her suppositions could be viewed as gospel truth. The (hardcover) book is well illustrated with historical photographs and black and white illustrations of Cassatt's and her contemporaries' work. The author makes numerous points regarding what motivated and inspired the artist at different periods in her life. She gives very specific illustrations of how difficult life could be for a woman of Cassatt's time. Additionally, the author admits Mary Cassatt's opinions and outspokenness often got her in trouble with friends. Those friendships she was able to maintain were based on a mutual, professional respect. Included is a chapter about the artist's work in an historical context. Her work was viewed differently by critics, and herself, at different times. Nancy Mowell Mathews book gives so much life to the artist's character, I wouldn't be surprised if it's made into a movie! It is certainly motivation for any working woman.
Getting to Know Mary in All Her Intricacies.......2001-06-25
Nancy Mathews gets to the point... her book is wonderfully researched and weaves through the intricately woven fabric of Cassatt's life; yet she doesn't bog you down with too many details. I enjoyed every page of this book and felt like I got an honest portrayal of the woman, her art and the reasons behind the decisions she made. I especially thank Nancy for her sympathetic yet analytical overview of the many misunderstandings that have been perpetuated year after year about Cassatt and other women artists in the late 19th/early 20th century. I'm glad to know the truth.
This biography left me in awe of Mary Cassatt who was obviously a focused, smart and privileged person at a time when many male artists were barely making ends meet. She was unafraid of the establishment, outspoken and determined, not to mention a smart businesswoman. The only thing I disagree with is when the author states that at 51 Mary Cassatt "was faced with an unusually hard burden of loneliness." Mary Cassatt was blessed with many friends, family and admirers and moved in a great many social circles all her life. She rarely veered from her chosen path. But the greatest lesson we can learn from Ms. Cassatt is to stay focused on our life purpose and to honour our own lives with the best we can give of ourselves.
A MUST READ for all interested in art during the late 1800.......2000-06-13
I highly recommend as a MUST READ this book Mary Cassatt: A Life. by Nancy Mowll Mathews. The book is a fascinating not only of the life of Mary Cassatt but for the insights on the art circles, family life and historical context of these artists and the times in which they lived. Mary Cassatt was a mover and shaker of her times, with good social skills and a mind for business. You travel with her life and times as if you were present. From my perspective I am so happy that I happened on this book because it puts alot of bits and pieces together on these artists.
