Save your money.......2006-07-10
Given that this is a small guide and that it tries to cover both sides of the Cascades, you can imagine how many common species are absent from this book. The photographs are pretty poor, and some of them are downright miserable. The plant descriptions are solid and some of the introductory material on Lewis and Clark is pretty good, but overall, spend a few more dollars to get a vastly superior Turner and Gustafson book.

Book Description
Violence dictated the daily rhythms of Cole Younger’s life. During the Civil War he was selected to join Quantrill’s Raiders because he owned his own revolver. His participation in the brutal 1863 raid on Lawrence, Kansas, drove him and other guerrillas into hiding as Union troops sought to punish the perpetrators of atrocities including the murder of women and children.
Younger met up with Jesse James in 1866. The James and Younger families cooperated in a series of bank and train robberies over the next decade that led to a feeling of invincibility. That feeling came to an end in Northfield, Minnesota, when local citizens killed two of the gang and wounded most of the others. Cole and his younger brothers were captured, tried, and sentenced to life in the Minnesota State Penitentiary. But even a life sentence could not keep Younger in prison.
Despite a career that included thirty wounds, battles with Pinkerton detectives and Yankees, an affair with outlaw Belle Starr, and a near-fatal confrontation with Jesse James, Cole Younger survived to become a living legend in his home state of Missouri. He died peacefully, a free man.

Who Was Cole Younger?.......2003-10-23
Homer Croy was the first student of the first school of journalism in the world (University of Missouri). He was born close to Jesse James' farm. Cole Younger came from the most fought-over county in Missouri; fighting began before the Civil War and continues after its end. Cole first killed at 17, was wanted dead or alive at 18, rode with Quantrill at 19. He killed 17 men, was wounded 30 times, but died peacefully in bed with 14 bullets in him. In between he spent over 25 years in prison. If you wonder about strife in countries in countries (like Yugoslavia) just read about the Border War in America circa 1860. I enjoyed the style of writing. This is history written by a journalist. You'll not be bored, since it reads like the newspaper story it was. Most of the great Civil War outlaws were born within 30 miles of Kansas City. Henry Washington Younger was one of the richest and important men of Jackson County, and was elected 3 times to the Missouri legislature, and a mayor in 1859. Thomas Coleman Younger was the 7th son of 14 children. One of Cole's teachers was Stephen B Elkins, later US Senator from West Virginia; Cole saved his life.
The Border War was conducted by gangs who were mostly interested in plunder first, flag second. Most families were peaceful, but could not avoid the troubled times. An incident at a dance forced Cole to become a hunted man. The holdup and murder of his father by Kansan Red Legs embittered Cole. Cole joined the Confederate Army, and was famed for his ruthlessness in battle, yet was kindly and considerate afterwards. Cole took part in the raid on Lawrence Kansas.
After the war ended Cole and Frank James invented bank robbery in Liberty Missouri 1866. Since Cole was well known, he quickly left for Texas. They gambled away their loot in Dallas. But they had been recognized, and the Pinkertons put their names on a wanted poster: Cole and Jim Younger, Frank and Jesse James, Jim Cummings, Charlie Pitts. Chapter VIII explains how the James-Younger gang covered their tracks; but they were still pursued. Since their gang was well-known, they decided to strike out for Minnesota. Their attempt in Northfield left four of their group dead, others wounded, without a cent. (The unclaimed bodies were donated to medical science.) The quick-witted Cole created a political reason to rob this bank: General Benjamin F Butler was an owner! Cole would say what it took to escape hanging. By pleading guilty they escaped execution. Cole became a model prisoner to get a pardon.
After his pardon, Cole was introduced to modern wonders: the telephone, the horseless carriage, the phonograph. For the first time in 25 years Cole saw a sunset. When Cole got an unconditional pardon, he returned to Missouri. After failing as a salesman, Cole joined the "Cole Younger-Frank James Wild West Show" until he retired. There is one interesting item: the Youngers were all Southerners, but their father was a Union sympathizer and did not believe in slavery! Was Cole a victim of circumstances (Chapter XVIII)? "In wartime men are rewarded for doing what will get them hanged in peacetime" said Niccolo Machiavelli.
Great Storytelling.......2001-04-01
Homer Croy is a first-rate storyteller in a very casual, homey sort of way. He writes this book about Cole Younger's life in such a way that you feel as though you're sitting around the fire with Homer while he tells the tale. It's very entertaining reading with many good touches of humor and wry comments throughout.
As history...First of all, he doesn't footnote in the traditional way but does include notes about each chapter explaining his sources. It's an informal, rather than scholarly, style. His research was extensive and tended toward finding people who could give him first-hand accounts, or as near to first-hand as possible family stories, along with contemporary newspaper accounts. In this way he hunts down the sources of many of the myths, legends, and rumors surrounding Cole Younger's life and career. Is he right about every particular and conclusion? I don't know. I'd say to read this book hand-in-hand with one of the more recent high-quality works like Marley Brant's "Outlaw Youngers" to compare versions of events.
Croy is very up-front with his opinions, something I appreciated. The author of such a book is the one who did the research, has a feel for the subject even in areas where hard data may be lacking, and I want to hear their opinion on disputed matters. Some history authors won't go out on that limb but Homer Croy has no such problem. He usually is clear on what is his opinion and what he has some evidence on, but he also recreates some scenes and conversations for which there could not possibly be any witnesses. So bear in mind there is an element of fictional novelization to the story.

I bought this book for a class in machine quilting and it's one of the most useful references in my sewing room. A very good hands-on guide to machine quilting!

I recently took a class taught by Ann Moore (EXCELLENT INSTRUCTOR) who recommended this book for her class. Although this book may not have a lot of pages, it gives a tremendous amount of information. In addition to basic machine quilting techniques, there are tables giving characteristics of threads, needles, batting, and other useful information. The types, uses, and sizes of threads are made very clear and understandable. The book starts with basic exercises and progresses through really advanced techniques used in art quilts. Don't let the 64 pages fool you into thinking there is not a lot of information here. It covers both "straight-line" and free motion quilting. As with any art, practice is needed before one excels, and this book provides exercises so you can build your skills. I have three other machine quilting books, and this is by far the best one for a beginning machine quilter.

I have been looking at many books (purchased some)in hopes of finding a simple book with some really good instructions on quilting, and this book did the job! It may seem thin, but if you need a book that covers all the basics with clear instructions you can't go wrong. Besides the easy to understand instructions,there are pictures,colored photographs of finished quilts,projects for practice,and even charts for thread,batting,and needle choices. Some of the books I purchased(for making art quilts)gave great directions for many things,but didn't really cover enough on quilt stitching.I didn't need another inspirational or color theory book. This book got me going on the sewing machine! I would say that if you need a quilt book that explains how to prepare a quilt for stitching and then actually learn the different types of stitches in an easy to understand way,you shouldn't be disappointed.

Not the best sewing instruction book or the worst.
At only 64 pages, it's more of a pamphlet than a book on machine quilting techniques. That said, I still like this book for it's organization and projects, troubleshooting and encouragement.
I feel like it doesn't really deserve 4 stars, but 3 seems stingy.

I aleardy own several books with basic quilt patterns but after leafing through this one in the store, I had to have it. The colors are so beautiful. I am a big fan of the Jean Wells and Valori Wells and this book features many quilts using their fabrics and unique color style. The book also showcases some great techniques.
An excellent resource for avid quilters.......2003-07-19

This book is more of a quick reference guide, but works well with another book called "Teach Them Diligently" that teaches you how to be a godly parent it explains scripture through life and the bible. You can read my review also on the book I just mentioned. I bought both of them 2gether and loved them. A must have for all parents
Makes teaching what the Bible says easy.......2006-03-01
For those of us parents who have difficulty recalling the exact passage and location in the Bible of a scripture, this book is a dream. Categorized by topic, such as perseverance, honesty or attitude, the book offers multiple scriptures supporting each attribute, and a "questions for discussion page" about each one. The book is helpful as a teaching tool whether for gentle correction or introducing topics for discussion. As my kids have gotten older, they will say, "Mom, what does the book say about (fill in the blank)?"
This book works in wonderful conjunction with the Bible as it leads the reader to ask questions about where passages originate
and what the circumstances were.
I highly recommend this book, whatever the age of your children.

I have loved using this handy resource with my children. In the past week, I have used it for contentment and anger. We went over the definition she gives and I had my children learn one of the verses. It gives us all a point of reference - we know what we SHOULD be doing!! It is great!!!

When he arrives at Taliesen, Wright's headquarters, he discovers the pervasive presence of Olgivanna Lazovich, Wright's third wife. Her spirit, as well as the spirit of her teacher, George Ivanovich Gurdjieff, dominate the environment. Kamal remains at Taliesen, working with Wright until Mri. Author Kamal Amin was an idealistic young Egyptian just out of architecture school when he traveled to America to join Frank Lloyd Wright's circle, there to become a working member of his Taliesin Fellowship, and a disciple of Wright. Reflections From The Shining Brow: My Years With Frank Lloyd Wright And Olgivanna Lazovich combines a memoir with a biographical sketch of Wright and his Fellowship members, including many details on Wright's third wife Olgivanna Lazovich, who dominated the atmosphere of the group at the time. A unique portrait of Wright from a very different and insightful perspective.

Finlay Comes Clean ... Sort of.......2000-10-06
Fergus Finlay was the chief spindoctor for the Irish Labour Party while Dick Spring was the leader. As such, he is uniquely placed to give an insider's view of what happened in a very eventful period in Irish politics.
In fairness to Finlay, he explains at the outset that he is making no attempt to be impartial. He has his own side of the story, and that's what he's going to tell, without pulling any punches. As such he takes us on a sweeping tour of fifteen exciting years of Irish politics, through the Garret Fitzgerald led Government of 1982-87, Charles Haughey's years of power, the election of Mary Robinson, Haughey's downfall, the Fianna Fail/Labour coalition, the spectacular fall of that Government, the formation of the so-called "Rainbow" coalition and the evolution of the Peace Process.
Through all these events we are getting Finlay's views as distinct from objective historical analysis, but once the reader bears in mind the fact that Finlay has his own fish to fry the trip can be quite rewarding. According to Finlay Dick Spring can do no wrong, Labour was primary force in anything that went right when in government and were as prophets crying in the wilderness when out of government.
The written history of Irish politics is badly served by those who have been active in it, as very few memoirs exists. A fascinating comparision can be made between Finlay's "Snakes and Ladders" and "Another Spin on the Merry-Go-Round", the memoir of the Government Press Secretary under Albert Reynolds, Sean Duignan.
In his book, Duignan gives a very prescient analysis of the role Finlay played in the Labour Party - "I like Dick Spring, but he's touchy, and when he's not touchy Fergus Finlay is touchy for him."
"Snakes and Ladders" is well worth a read for people interested in that period when Irish politics changed irrevocably in the final decades of the Twentieth Century, despite the author's obvious bias. The tragedy is that there aren't more people like Finlay to go on the record with how they saw and helped the Irish political scene evolve into the landscape we have today.
