Book Description
A thorough exploration of the British locales made famous by the world's leading mystery writer, from London to Wallingford and Torquay.
Customer Reviews:
favorable press reviews.......2000-07-18
This book received favorable reviews in the travel section of several major newspapers in the U.S. and in England: The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Wall Street Journal, a number of regional newspapers and best of all, in the Sunday Times of London.
Plan a trip!! Go armchair travelling! Use as a reference........1999-10-12
Charmingly written as if the author is sharing tea with the reader. So whether you actually head to Christie's England or stay in your comfy armchair, this is a nice way to bring literature to life. Actual locations from Christie's stories are pinpointed. Explanations are provided for some aspects of British life that have Americans puzzled. One could really explore London or Harrogate or other Christie places with the assistance of addresses and phone numbers included. Maps provided are okay for the armchair traveller. Towns and villages outside of London are given as much attention as suggestions in the city. I can't wait to ride the Orient Express myself!!
Book Description
For decades, President Jimmy Carter has been an avid student and teacher of the Bible. In recent years, the adult Sunday school classes he leads at his hometown Baptist church have become famous the world over. As
The New York Times put it, "These weekly sessions...are remarkable for the ability of regular folks to walk in, grab a seat and exchange views with the 39th President of the United States. But they are also remarkable for what Mr. Carter has to say."
Now, this most admired American has selected fifty-two of his favorite Bible meditations from these Sunday gatherings to share with anyone who is searching for new faith...or fuller understanding of a lifelong creed. The result is this remarkable book,
Sources of Strength: Meditations on Scripture for a Living Faith.
For Jimmy Carter, as for countless others, Holy Scripture has been a constant companion, a source of inspiration and strength in both good times and bad. A lifetime of devoted Bible reading has taught him that the truths of Scripture have the power to enrich and transform our daily lives in unexpected ways. As President Carter writes, "The Bible offers concrete guidance for overcoming our weaknesses and striving toward the transcendent life for which we were created."
Sources of Strength is Jimmy Carter's invitation to you to share in the spiritual bounty of Scripture and joyous, more fulfilling life that a living faith makes possible.
Also Available As An Audio Book
"I think the audio version brings a human touch..It permits me to communicate in a much more intimate fashion."
--President Jimmy Carter
Customer Reviews:
Great Book to Read Over Time.......2005-11-29
Thoughtfully written, this is one of those books to keep on the night stand and read one chapter a night and meditate upon the lesson set forth in the chapter. Highly recommend.
Wise words from a great Christian man.......2004-12-29
This is a great devotional that draws on a wide range of scripture and also on President Carter's long, interesting, diverse, and meaningful life. Not only is Carter a good exegete of scripture, but his genuine faith comes through in every page. He writes in a very personal style that makes you feel like you're studying the scriptures with a favorite uncle...who happened to be the leader of the free world some years back.
The book is divided into 52 short sermonettes, I suppose so you can read one a week for a year (though you will almost certainly want to read it faster than that). These sections are further subdivided into 9 sections: The Word Became Flesh, His Healing Touch, Who is my Neighbor?, What We Believe, Christians in the World, To Know and Worship, God's Riches at Christ's Expense, When the Road is Rough, and God's Call. The messages are broad enough that you can likely find a word of hope or encouragement or challenge somewhere in here, depending on what it is that you need to hear.
The meditations are intellectually stimulating, yet simple enough that I have used some of them as reading for my youth group.
In his life, Jimmy Carter has shown what is means to live out your faith. In this book, he reflects on what that can look like for us.
Beautiful, sensational, clear and to the point.......2004-08-16
This is the very first book I read of Carter. I never expected that an ex-president, supposed to be pragmatic and rational, can have written such a beautiful, sensational, clear and to the point spiritual book. Not a few messages, but fifty-two meaningful and insightful ones in this 241 page book. The format is traditional, with three to four pages of elaboration on a particular biblical verse. Nevertheless, the impact is great and you really feel your faith and spiritual strength being enhanced through reading it, of course with intermittent prayers in between for optimal effect. I dont want to comment it as a tool book, but it does serves its purpose really well.
In short, a great read not to be missed! It's the best and the least difficult spiritual book I had read in months, after the intense round of five to six Philip Yancey books I read about half a year before, which I still deem them the very best amongst all christian books.
p.s. Below please find two good passages for your reference:-
Pg 74: The context for Jesus's stories about the Samaritans, ...For Samaritan, substitute black, Muslim, AIDS, Haitian - or perhaps roll them all into one! ... His acknowledging the gratitude of the healed leper and using a Samaritan's actions as epitomizing the Golden Rule are powerful lessons against prejudice.
Pg 112: We argue incessantly about separation of church and state, the priesthood of believers, ordination of women, prayer in schools, gay rights, predestination ... and any number of other "crucial" issues. Perhaps worse than the Corinthians, we forget the solid, unquestionable, unifying foundation of our faith in in the gentle Jesus, full of grace and truth. As Cecil Sherman has said, "Too many churches are majoring in the minors."
One of my most prized books.......2004-07-07
I cannot express in words how important this book is to me. I started reading it during a very difficult time in my life and it really helped me. Many people look for spiritual guidance, but let's face it, the bible can be a difficult read. Jimmy Carter takes passages from the bible and explains what he thinks they mean. However, Carter does it in a very loving and objective way. Mr. Carter speaks of the compassionate and forgiving Christ. There is no finger pointing and moralizing here. Mr. Carter simply tries to relay what God's message is and how me might live it. Although I am not a Baptist like Jimmy Carter, I really felt in tune with what he had to say. If the bible by itself has not helped you to understand God's greater message, maybe this book will.
I Highly Reccomend Sources of Strength.......2002-04-25
I gained a respect for Jimmy Carter that until now was only a fair assessment of the man. I know he wrote this with the intention of being a once a week reading, but I have just about finished it in just under two weeks with intentions to reread it many many more times. His style of writing has left me with the desire to read many more of his works. One cannot help but to find ones faith taken to a higher level after reading his Bible Teachings.

The Sunday school classes he leads at his hometown church in Plains, Georgia, are legendary. "These weekly sessions . . . are remarkable for the ability of regular folks to walk in, grab a seat, and exchange views with the thirty-ninth president of the United States," says The New York Times. Now available in paperback, it can be enjoyed on its own or as the companion volume to Carter's bestselling spiritual autobiography, Living Faith. If you have family working in the penal system, read it!.......1998-10-18
Jerome Washington gives you a human outlook on societies "inhuman" population. It is a good read. If you have family in the penal system, on either side of the bars, you will have a different outlook on what they endure.
Washngtons' stories, proactively narrated, are eye opening!.......1998-06-23
Jerome Washington tells the stories that other sources have left out, or undetailed. Prison is a society, not just a group of people from the 'real' society. His own story is remarkable, giving him the unique ability to relate his observations to the reader. Washington strays from his own story as much as possible by examining the life of others confined to the same cage. Perhaps the pain of the recollection is the driving force of the reluctance to spill his own guts. He avoids it untill the end when he just can't hold back any further. Like all real quality writing, the author uses the language of the characters. The eerie result he may have intended has been achieved. The situations are scary, and the hope is bleek. The inmates are wild, hungry, and dangerous, and the prison employees are just as trapped - just as viscous: "They were angry that I was walking out of their prison alive ... and took false comfort in the hope that if I didn't return to prison, I would surely send my young to grow old behind their walls." Just as in other stories of prisoners or patients who believe the 'system' is corrupt, the reader must exercise his/her duty to examine the reality and the haze - and question what is perception, what is real, what is made up, and if the point of view is tainted by paranoia... why? You, the reader, will be a floating eye through a prison, through another world - with foreign rules, sanctions, and truths. And being seperated from the setting, although right there in the thick of it, you are safe from the prison's disease which spreads from animal to animal, through cage to cage, all the way to the to zookeeper.

A Wealth of Information.......2002-11-15
I purchased this book in 1984 at a local pet store. This book provided insight and instruction for the care and maintenance of dozens of local and exotic snakes for me as a youth. Now, as I still read this book from time to time, I realize that it contains BETTER and often MORE ACCURATE information than any modern book I have read on snake husbandry to date. I highly recommend this title to both the beginner, as well as the advanced hobbyist.

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-09-06
This book was great. It was not what I expected at all. I purchased it just out of curiosity about foam. However, the projects depicted in the book are very nice and opened my imagination for other types of works. Techniques are very simple and easy to follow. Lots of nice pictures and templates are also included.
I recommend this book.
FUN INSPIRATION.......2007-02-21
This books does offer a good variety of projects and many can be great for beginners or children as well. The author covers lots of information for the beginner to learn about products and methods which are very helpful in order to make a finish product worth hanging. The photos are great and the text informative. Worth adding to your library. I think kids will really enjoy making these projects.
Easy Sculpting is Right.......2007-02-19
I originally saw this book on the Carol Duval Show. From the beginning this book looked really interesting and I was right. Sculpting the forms was fun and easy. I'm am really enjoying it.
Thanks for offering it,
BLT
Check this book out!.......2007-01-09
That book has so many pictures that help me so much than read just words. I need a visual example. Great book! You know I don't have a kiln to bake clay or can't afford to buy one. This foam sculpture will do and save a lot of money! I have already made two sculptures and everyone was awed at them. They thought they are 100% solid clay. No regret to buy that book but I hope to see more books like this.

Still relevant.......2007-05-13
Though Asian agriculture may not seem to be of interest to all, this book offers anyone who likes to grow things a look at logical simplicity in the use of land--permaculture at its best. It also adds to the history of the world, by providing obscure details about farming-village life, and many photos. Every culture has wisdom to pass on to another, and this book also features the cultural quirks and foibles alongside the logic.
Book Description
In 1792, when he was forty-seven, the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya contracted a serious illness that left him stone deaf. In this extraordinary book, Julia Blackburn follows Goya through the remaining thirty-five years of his life. It was a time of political turmoil, of war, violence, and confusion, and Goya transformed what he saw around him into visionary paintings, drawings, and etchings. These were also years of tenderness for Goya, of intimate relationships with the Duchess of Alba and with Leocadia, his mistress, who accompanied him to the end.
Blackburn’s singular distinction as a biographer is her uncanny ability to create a kaleidoscope of biography, memoir, history, and meditation—to think herself into another world. In Goya she has found the perfect subject. Visiting the towns Goya frequented, reading the revelatory letters that he wrote for years to a boyhood friend, investigating the subjects he portrayed, Julia Blackburn writes about the elderly painter with the intimacy of an old friend, seeing through his eyes and sharing the silence in his head.
With unprecedented immediacy and illumination, Old Man Goya gives us an unparalleled portrait of the artist.
Customer Reviews:
Goya a go-go.......2007-04-26
If you want dry history and biography, go elsewhere. Blackburn's talent is in immersing herself in a very personal and empathetic way in the world of Goya. I started Blackburn's The Book of Colour years ago, but dropped it quickly - her style annoyed me then but now I see that she hadn't yet found her stride, was bravely experimenting and failing.
More and more, I hear people saying that they are finding their "portal" to history through this innovative post-modern kind of biographical historical melange. Anyone who calls this work self-indulgent misses the point. Anyone who doubts Blackburn's intelligence and skill as a writer in pulling this together is deluded. I am astonished by how vividly she conjured the world that she imagined Goya saw, without relying on turgid passages of description. Love the impressionistic style. Feel that the reviewer who said she's a poor John Berger imitation was being a bit harsh. Let her have her idiosyncratic and at times brilliant style. There's enough potted history about without Blackburn adding to the canon.
Doesn't work.......2007-02-02
This is supposed to be part biography, part personal recollection. Part fiction, part non-fiction. In prose but poetic. However Blackburn does not pull any of this off. The book provides some fluffy overly-poetic imagery of Goya (some of which IS memorable) but not much more. It reads quite self-indulgently too. The part biography part personal story might have worked in principle given the right style - in practice it hasn't.
Might have made a good poem but it's not a good book.
Fantasy.......2002-12-19
Half the book is about the author, not the artist Goya, and her juvenile fantasies of how Goya lived. In between this there is a smidgen of information on Goya, but I'll probably learn more taking out the movie on him. Did anyone read this before it was published?
A sensitive insightful work on the Artist Goya........2002-11-26
Though this work is not written by an art historian it is written with a fond appreciation for art and the artist. I was skeptical and didn't expect to find it so interesting. After reading many dry and boring works on artists, where so called facts are really just history (lies put to written account)-this work is what understanding art is all about. Her visits to the places Goya lived in shed light to his possible personality as one who experiences his work may do also. She uses her experience as a human being with a dying mother who is also an artist to contrast with discovering Goya through her travels. Without the clutter of dates and art historian jargon, we get to experience a human being and the connection between art and life. Goya appears as a human being, with hopes, desires and short-comings and not as some machine who produced art exactly when and where. I enjoyed her attempt at understanding the deaf and what it is really life to live in silence like Goya did. I think this book will help people appreciate Goya's work and the people he loved as well.
old man goya.......2002-09-20
This is a superficial and self-indulgent approach to both the subject (Goya), his art, Spain and Spanish history. Full of factual errors, it also is full of non-sequiturs, vague statements and strangely unconnected self-reflections. A huge disappointment.

Book Description
This edition of the writings of Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763-98), barrister, United Irishman, agent of the Catholic Committee, and officer in the French revolutionary army, is intended to comprehend all his writings and largely to supersede the two volume Life of Theobald Wolfe Tone...written by himself that was edited by his son and published in 1826. It consists mainly of Tone's correspondence, diaries, autobiography, pamphlets, public addresses, and miscellaneous memoranda. It is based on the original MSS if extant or the most reliable printed sources. Tone's participation in Irish politics in the early 1790s and his presence on the periphery of the ruling circle in revolutinary France from February 1796 to September 1798 is enough to make his writings a major historical source. However the literary quality of his writings, diaries, and autobiography enhance this importance. This volume is the second of three volumes and covers Tone's attempt to settle in America, the early days in France, his negotiations with the Directory, his entry into the French army, and the expedition to Bantry Bay. Preceded by Tone's Career in Ireland to June 1795 (1998), it is to be followed by France, the Rhine, Lough Swilly, and Death of Tone, January 1797 to November 1798. Addenda, corrigenda, a bibliography of Theobald Wolfe Tone, and an index to all three volumes will appear in the third volume.
