    Book Description

Combining unique travel choices, outdoor adventures, and little-known locales into guides where vacations meet adventures, each title in the Hidden series also offers readers the comfort of detailed maps, internet information for each listing, author favorite picks, suggested itineraries, and walking and driving tours. Here experienced travel writer Richard Harris balances coverage of Baja's growing travel facilities, including the new mega-resorts and the villas and beachside restaurants around Los Cabos, with extensive details on the peninsula's many natural attractions, adventure activities, and sleepy coastal towns. Truly two guides in one, Hidden Baja serves as both a travel guide and an outdoor handbook for those looking to experience Baja by foot, bike, kayak, surfboard or scuba. The lost beaches, small towns, and the vast expanses of wilderness in between the two are the focus of Hidden Baja. Tracing the main highways the full length of the peninsula as well as the many side roads down to the beaches and up into the hills, this guide reveals an authentic land of adventure, from century-old mission churches to secluded beaches on quiet bays. 21 new maps are offered in this edition.

    2 out of 5 stars Hidden Baja.......2002-11-12

Not a bad book if you looking at the areas of Northern Baja and the Cabo San Lucas area. Out of 258 pages about 130 pages cover these area while only 58 cover the remainder. There are much better books out there.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling, collective human testimony.......2004-02-09

The collaborative effort of Chuck Fries, Irv Wilson, and Spencer Green, "We'll Never Be Young Again": Remembering The Last Days of John F. Kennedy combines history, narratives, and personal testimonies of the final days of America's 35th President. Over 125 letters written by notable individuals such as Senator John Kerry, Jerry Lewis, Dominick Dunne, Liz Smith and more offer a compelling, collective human testimony to the loss of a charismatic, strong-willed and truly unforgettable and martyred "Camelot" era political leader. "We'll Never Be Young Again" is a superb and highly commended contribution to the growing library books on and about JFK.

5 out of 5 stars Best JFK book ever.......2003-12-28

I was moved and emotionally caught up in the great memories of JFK and Camelot from the thoughts and stories of the many great people interviewed here. The selections here are terrific, and rather than the oft-told, dry history of our greatest president, the personal reflections that are recounted in the excellent book reflect who what and where we were as a country then, what we lost, and what we can aspire to be in the future. An amazing book.

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful Remembrances, Good Gift.......2003-12-13

This isn't really my kind of book, but it's nicely crafted and attractive to flip through. I bought copies for my grandparents for Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars I know what I'm buying my loved ones for Christmas!.......2003-12-11

Growing up I remember two prominent portraits on the wall of my home. Jesus and JFK. I almost didn't read this book. I felt I already knew everything there was to know about that fateful day and I didn't want to remember the painful details. But I did and I don't regret a minute of it. This book is filled with vivid recollections from a cross-section of people that moved me from tears to laughter with a flip of a page. I found the narrative fresh and the timeline helpful. I know what I'm buying my loved ones for Christmas -- this book!

    4 out of 5 stars A Kennedy book with a different perspective.......2003-12-01

I thoroughly enjoyed the many comments by people great and small on their remembrances of November 22, 1963. This well-written narrative of the last days of JFK also provided some unusual comments and insights from friends of JFK from Robert McNamara to Jerry Lewis that I had not read before, as well as the the feelings of shock and despair that prevailed with ordinary people on hearing the horrific news of the assasination. This book has certainly supplemented my information on this well documented tragedy.

The Yellowstone-to-Yukon corridor (Y2Y) encompasses nearly half a million square miles of the northern Rocky Mountains, housing 11 national parks and myriad wilderness areas, wildlife refuges, and forest reserves. But with resorts sprouting out of its valleys and housing developments creeping up the foothills, concerns have mounted over the welfare of the region's renowned wildlife and awe-inspiring landscape. The Y2Y Conservation Initiative, founded in the early 1990s, aims to uphold "this biogeographical region's unique beauty and natural diversity by finding ways for human activities to blossom without overwhelming nature and the overall quality of life."

The famed Craighead twins, wildlife biologists both, discovered in their years of studying Yellowstone's grizzlies that the bears typically wander up to a thousand square miles--meaning that even that huge park does not provide enough forage within its boundaries to ensure their survival in lean years. A Y2Y corridor of safe passage would offer animals like the grizzly ample room to roam, as well as clear migration routes to lessen the chance of extinction due to inbreeding. Already changes are taking place with such knowledge in mind, like the construction of animal bridges over major roadways. But the region's vastness also guarantees multiple private, public, and bureaucratic hoops to jump through in the conservation effort.

As a book, Yellowstone to Yukon is a thoughtful primer on the landscape and its wild denizens. Striking color pictures and maps accompany narrative text up to National Geographic's usual standards, guiding readers through 2,100 miles of the "most intact collections of wildlife in the world." --Jenny Burritt

    Book Description

Crossroads of wild nature and a rapidly growing human presence, Yellowstone to Yukon -- Y2Y for short -- is both a biogeographical region and a conservation initiative. It encompasses nearly half a million square miles along the craggy Northern Rockies, most of it above 3,500 feet. Y2Y's limited lowlands provide prime winter range for numerous wildlife species -- as well as prime ranchland and prime building sites for vacation homes. Wildlife biologist and acclaimed author Douglas H. Chadwick takes you on a voyage of personal discovery as he chronicles the burgeoning threats that face this region -- and the promise embodied by Y2Y.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!! Now I have new vacation ideas.......2006-01-21

I bought this at Yellowstone in the summer of 2005, in the opening legs of a vacation trip from Grand Teton to Banff. After reading the book, I already have ideas for a trip to northern British Columbia and the Yukon. The only thing that could top this would be a nice two-hour video.

But the book is about more than nature travel, although that alone would be a five-star effort. It's also about the preservation of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem on the U.S. side of the border, and similar land on the Canadian side. Chadwick details how the consciousness of ecosystems, especially for large animals such as grizzlies, has grown in recent years as we try to improve wildlife protection in the 21st century.

A must read to understand what natural history in this portion of the Rockies is all about.

5 out of 5 stars America the Beautiful.......2002-07-12

Rediscover what makes North America such a beautiful continent. The photographs are in typical National Geographic excellence, as is the writing. I had the pleasure of meeting Douglas Chadwick in person and having dinner with him one day. This is not just someone doing a writing assignment, but someone who is very passionate about nature and its beauty. A wonderful gift for anyone you know who hikes or even drives around the country. Explore the splendors that Mother Nature has created.

          Book Description

In 1912, Mary Vaux, a botanist, glaciologist, painter, and photographer, wrote about her mountain adventures: “A day on the trail, or a scramble over the glacier, or even with a quiet day in camp to get things in order for the morrow's conquests? Some how when once this wild spirit enters the blood…I can hardly wait to be off again." Vaux's compulsion was shared by many women whose intellects, imaginations, and spirits rose to the challenge of the mountains between the late-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. This Wild Spirit explores a sampling of women's creative responses—in fiction and travel writing, photographs and paintings, embroidery and beadwork, letters and diaries, poetry and posters—to their experiences in the Rocky Mountains of Canada.

This slender, elegant volume presents a series of brief natural history essays by French entomologist Jean Henri Fabre (1823-1915), who delighted in observing such things as the mating behavior of scorpions and the hunting techniques of grasshoppers. Linda Davis, who edited The Passionate Observer, selected passages that reflect Fabre's careful, painstaking study of the natural world, which he undertook "to increase by one atom the general mass of knowledge, the incomparable treasure of mankind." (And so he did, for which we must all be thankful.) Bright, warm watercolors by Marlene McLoughlin complement Fabre's work and impart the feel of his native Provence.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasure to Read and Ponder.......2001-03-23

Except for a short teaching job in Corsica, Jean Henri Fabre (1823-1915) spent his life in a tiny area of western Provence. When his teaching duties and family responsibilities permitted, he studied everything in the small world around him with such careful attention and clear vision that he became one of the greatest natural historians of his time. Charles Darwin called Fabre "an incomparable observer" and Victor Hugo dubbed him "the insect's Homer." For over forty years, he scrimped to afford a piece of fallow land - L'Harmas - where he could observe native plants, birds, animals and insects in their own habitat; where, as he wrote, "I could ...engage in that difficult conversation whose questions and answers have experiment for their language." The essays in "A Passionate Observer" date from the happy period of his residence at L'Harmas. He writes poetically of the song and life of the cicada, the weeds and the insects attracted to them, the life teeming in and around a small pond. Like other scientists born before the invention of photography, Fabre perfected the art of verbal description, and his writings provide models of exact and evocative prose. The essays "My Schooling" and "Heredity" reminded us of Marcel Pagnol's memoirs of his childhood in Provence.

We read this book before one of our visits to Provence, and found our way to the site of Fabre's home and garden, now a national museum still called L'Harmas. (In the Rhone Valley, take the D976 road northwest of Orange to Serignan-du-Comtat. The route to L'Harmas is well-marked once you get close to Serignan. Avoid Orange if possible as it's unfortunately a constant traffic jam.) We stood at the gate in the wall and rang the bell to alert the caretaker of our arrival. As with many Provencal museums, the caretaker and his wife are local folk, happy to answer questions about their local hero. We visited Fabre's study, on the second floor of his home, which doubled as his herbarium, pleased to tiptoe around the workroom and laboratory of this great scholar. Floor-to-ceiling glass cases house his exhaustive natural history collections of local birds and their eggs, insects, mineral specimens, his library and his collections of antiquities. We studied the 19th century globe on his mantel, on which "Californie" is a remote and apparently unexplored territory and our own Oregon unmarked. An annex displays over a hundred delicate watercolors of mushrooms and fungi of Provence that Fabre painted, and the modest child's paintbox that he used, as well as Fabre's coin collection and local archaeological finds, including much Roman material. We most enjoyed reading an original letter from Charles Darwin, one of Fabre's correspondents. The French government unfortunately turned the wild area outside - L'Harmas - that Fabre so eagerly sought for his study of native species into an arboretum full of exotics; we would have much preferred to see Fabre's native plants. As our daughter Anne put it: "Why go around the world to see incense cedars, when they grow in our backyard?" Nevertheless, the arboretum encourages a pleasant walk through interesting plants from around the globe, and is home to local birds. Many of the plant contributions to the arboretum are from Japan, where Fabre inspires almost as much reverence as he does in his native France. In this garden we enjoyed visiting with a few other pilgrims to L'Harmas, including folks from Paris, Scotland, England and Japan.

Any student of natural history will enjoy Fabre's essays on the development of a naturalist's sensibility, and any reader who wants to visit Provence prepared to appreciate the landscape that they will encounter should pick up this treasure of a book. It's beautifully bound, artfully designed and illustrated. (Our copy would be tidier if my ethnobotanist husband hadn't stuck so many post-it notes in it as page markers, but that's a tribute to the value of the text.) Marlene McLoughlin's charming watercolors of perched villages, Provencal birds and insects, flowers, fruits, fields and village streets - found on almost every page - are alone worth the price of the book.

                      Book Description

From the catwalks of Europe to the trendiest catalogs and boutiques, crochet is making a very fashionable resurgence. But even with all that popularity, there's no need to pay designer prices for chic crocheted clothes. These stylish, contemporary patterns come from a variety of artists, and they're far from those musty designs Grandma used to make. And because most use familiar and easy to learn stitches, you can easily make them yourself with the help of the well-illustrated basics section. All the classic garments--including a cloche, fringed poncho, Chanel-inspired jacket, and itsy-bitsy bikini--are created with both traditional and specialty yarns, and they feature a range of fashionable embellishments like textured bobble stitches, corkscrew fringe, and delicate edgings.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite trendy crochet .......2007-08-28

Finally, stylish crochet. NOT like your grandma's. The cover sarong is spectacular. Designer Nancy Minsky rocks. The jean skirt is so in! The designs by Nancy Minsky are stylish, trendy and hip. Her directions are easy to follow. You can see the European flair this designer exhibits. Her suggestions are so helpful. The little green and white bag is a cute pattern also and great for jewelry while traveling. I am a novice but can easily follow her directions as well as others in this book. I bought this book for myself and for a couple of my my friends.

                      1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-12-31

I have to agree with the others who gave this book one or two stars. There were one or two patterns that were nice, but when I received the book and looked through the rest, I was very disappointed. 38 out of 40 of the patterns were boring, cheap-looking and beginner-level. If you're a long time, experienced crochet artist, this book is NOT for you.

                      4 out of 5 stars I can't believe the other ratings..........2006-09-01

I had trouble swallowing the reviews that gave this book a one or two star rating. 1st of all no need to spend $25 as it can be gotten for less and 2nd of all it is worth the money. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because I expected more clothing. I would label this more towards the wearable accessories book. A couple of hats & bags, cute bracelet, belts, scarves, ponchos(of which I am not a big fan), shawls, key chain, cute ideas for purchased clothes, stunning skirt, string bikini, toppers, shrugs, boleros and a couple of halter tops. I personally like 28 out of 40 designs. There are a few snoozers as in any pattern book. I just felt this book was rated unfairly and had to put my 2 cents in. Remember though taste is a personal thing.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed- cover and 2 other outfits out of 40 are the only good ones.......2006-04-04

What made me buy the book was the cover for the sarong. I thought WOW, I already had ideas. Then when I received the book, went through the pics, [which they give closeups on the stitches] I was thinking, [Ive been had] The poncho they have only 1 though I dont like the pattern it gave me ideas and the yarn Richesse et Soie impossible to get, which I want for the high content of cashmere, from K1C2, and the silk ribbon form Artemis, you can't even find I dont think they do any more. I was truly disapppointed and have entertained the idea of sending the book back. There is more accessories [wristband, small pouch bag, alot of edging] than there are clothing. I was hoping for sweaters, better designs on hats/scarves. Save your money! :(

                      4 out of 5 stars Crochet Book.......2006-02-21

The book has beautiful illustrations of some unusual designs. I haven't yet made any of the items so I can't speak to how good the directions are, but in general I'm pleased with the book and looking forward to many hours of crochet pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!.......2007-05-10

This book literally changed my life! I was sleeping in the bed with my child (while my husband slept in the guest room), my child was waking up all through the night and I was nursing him back to sleep. My husband and I hadn't shared a bed for 10 months and I had not had more than 2 hours of consecutive sleep in months. The situation just got worse and worse until I found this book. I read it, and found that parts of it addressed my situation exactly!!! We set a time to get started (on a Friday night since we both work full-time), and followed the books instructions. I couldn't believe how quickly my child was sleeping through the night! It's two months later, and he is STILL sleeping through the night - usually 10 to 11 hours. When we wakes up he puts himself back to sleep pretty quickly. I was convinced that my child was going to be the exception to the rule because of all the bad habits we had instilled in him, but instead, he's doing awesome! I HIGHLY recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars Helpful but not the best I've read.......2007-01-15

This book was a pretty quick read and you can rapidly begin the techniques. It is divided by age group so you can jump right to the section appropriate for your child after reading a brief introduction. It did include information on eliminating nighttime feedings, developmental factors affecting sleep, and getting baby to sleep in his/her own bed, but overall, I did not find it to be as comprehensive as West's "Good Night, Sleep Tight." It is a less gentle approach, but I think it would bring results faster. It also seems slightly out of date. I chose to modify techniques from both books.

4 out of 5 stars Good step by step guide.......2006-11-04

I like that this book is broken up into age groups and different factors that affect your childs sleep. I have a problem with letting my son cry it out, so using the combination of this book and the "No Cry" book, I felt I had enough tools to achieve what I wanted. I would've given it 5 stars if there was a section on how to deal with naps. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

                        4 out of 5 stars What a relief!.......2006-06-04

Our pediatrician's office recommended this book when I called to plead for help, in desperation after almost a year of extreme difficulty putting our daughter to bed. From the beginning, our daughter fought bedtime. Even at a year old, she had amazing stamina, managing to stay up until 11 or midnight before finally crashing (at which point my husband and I were totally exhausted, too). After baby #2 came, my first child (then 20 months old) started climbing out of her crib... and then it was just too much to take any longer.

Within a week of reading this book and applying its lessons, our daughter was finally going to bed at 8:30 pm on most nights, without screaming (most of the time). She will still get up repeatedly some nights right after we put her down, but we've learned a reasonable, no-nonsense approach that doesn't reward her delaying tactics. She still isn't the best at going to bed, but we no longer have the hours-long battles we used to have. Very straightforward and practical. I highly recommend this book. When you read it, if you're like me, you'll marvel that you didn't seek help sooner!

                        5 out of 5 stars **Update**.......2005-05-18

I wrote a review of this book 7 years ago when my son was 12 weeks old (scroll down -- July, 1998). He is now a happy, well-adjusted 7 year-old who gets plenty of sleep every night. He has always had excellent sleep habits, including very few nightmares. We used this book faithfully for years since it spans from newborn to age 5, the few times we needed it. I attribute our (and his) success in large part to this book.

Buy it and live it, and more importantly, sleep through the night, every night.

                            Book Description

"Bloomsbury on the Mediterranean," is how Vanessa Bell described France in a letter to her sister, Virginia Woolf. Remarking on the vivifying effect of Cassis, Woolf herself said, "I will take my mind out of its iron cage and let it swim.... Complete heaven, I think it." Yet until now there has never been a book that focused on the profound influence of France on the Bloomsbury group. In Bloomsbury and France: Art and Friends, Mary Ann Caws and Sarah Bird Wright reveal the crucial importance of the Bloomsbury group's frequent sojourns to France, the artists and writers they met there, and the liberating effect of the country itself. Drawing upon many previously unpublished letters, memoirs, and photographs, the book illuminates the artistic development of Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Clive Bell, David Garnett, E. M. Forster, Lytton Strachey, Dora Carrington, and others. The authors cover all aspects of the Bloomsbury experience in France, from the specific influence of French painting on the work of Roger Fry, Duncan Grant, and Vanessa Bell, to the heady atmosphere of the medieval Cistercian Abbaye de Pontigny, the celebrated meeting place of French intellectuals where Lytton Strachey, Julian Bell, and Charles Mauron mingled with writers and critics, to the relationships between the Bloomsbury group and Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein, Andre Gide, Jean Marchand, and many others. Caws and Wright argue that Bloomsbury would have been very different without France, that France was their anti-England, a culture in which their eccentricities and aesthetic experiments could flower. This remarkable study offers a rich new perspective on perhaps the most creative group of artists and friends in the 20th century.
