          Book Description

The many sides of Abraham Lincoln—war leader, humorist, commander in chief, politician, and emancipator—are vividly depicted in this concise and fresh look at his presidential years. Pivotal events, decisions, and issues in Lincoln’s private and public life are scrutinized and explained clearly by noted historian James A. Rawley. During an innovative yet bloody era marked by mass communication, unheard-of national recognition and media attention, and the increasingly destructive uses of technology to wage war, Lincoln did all that he could to preserve the nation as a whole. Principles underpinning Lincoln’s actions and motivations as administrator and war leader included an abiding spirit of nationalism, which contrasted with the forces driving his immediate predecessors, and the encompassing power conferred upon him as commander in chief in wartime. Accessible and informative, Abraham Lincoln and a Nation Worth Fighting For is an engaging and valuable introduction to the career of one of our most memorable presidents.

George McGovern, the 1972 Democratic nominee for President, offers a tragic family drama while confronting the choices of his own life in this story of a daughter's fatal fight with alcoholism. Told in direct prose, the tale is a harrowing one. Teresa Jane McGovern, the middle child of five, began drinking at age 13, was hospitalized for depression after her arrest for smoking pot at age 19, cleaned up for a while in her 30s, but then spiraled out of control until she froze to death in a parking lot after a drinking binge. Her father openly examines his role and the causes of his daughter's demise.

5 out of 5 stars To Drink or Not To Drink - Only the Drinker Decides.......2006-11-11

'Terry' is the heart-wrenching tale of the life and death of Terry, daughter of George McGovern. I was reduced to tears in the book's first 40 pages as he recounts her tragic death. The book was very personal to me because I have lost a daughter (in an auto accident) and alcohol abuse and dependence have disrupted my life. Of course, the setting is familiar to me as a resident of the Madison area (indeed the Teresa McGovern Treatment Center is located adjacent to my favorite local place to walk). And McGovern's quixotic 1972 presidential campaign was the first of many political campaigns upon which I have worked.

Teresa McGovern simply could not stop drinking and in the end effectively drank herself to death. The book tells the excruciatingly sad tale how this bright, sensitive girl grew into an alcohol dependent. Despite untold attempts by herself and her family to get her to stop drinking, in the end the booze won.

The book is a cautionary tale for 'recovered alcoholics' - Terry did stop drinking for some 8 years and had several other substantial bouts of sobriety. In the end, sobriety was more painful than drinking despite the incredibly painful consequences of her drinking. If you think you have the booze beaten, remember that it lurks in wait for you.

The book does highlight the lack of any predictably succesful treatment for alcoholism. She tried many times to get cured, although she did not, apparently, try any non-AA programs. In one section McGovern simply records police, hospital, and detox center reports as she was taken repeatedly to detox. At the end of her life she was basically drinking to the point of incoherence and incontinence every day. One does wonder why the authorities did not attempt to have her committed involuntarily - but whether that would that have worked is highly doubtful.

One thing McGovern does not mention is the woefully inadequate insurance coverage for AODA treatment. Even if you have insurance, it is likely that your policy severely limits the amount that will be paid to cover treatment.

A powerful, honest, deeply felt book. The reader wants to reach out to McGovern and remind him that, in fact, he did try to help his daughter, it didn't work and her death from alcohol abuse really was not his fault. To drink or not to drink - only the drinker decides.

5 out of 5 stars Terry's Purpose in Life-To Help Others Through Her Story.......2006-08-05

This story holds a grip on me that I can't get over. Maybe I am like George McGovern myself in that I too can't explain what causes a beloved child in the family to grow up and self destruct. This story haunts me in that I am watching my own daughter at the age of 43 create similar suffering for every member of her family and friends who love her. I relate so strongly to the McGovern family on every page of this book, even to our own happy 50th wedding anniversary last year, that it frightens me based on Terry's tragic outcome just a year after the McGovern's celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. At the same time, I am so grateful for McGovern's advice as to what he would have done differently, especially in the last several months of Terry's life. I just bought several books for family members, and one to donate to a Milwaukee area hospital Women's Pavillion library that has every subject covered but alcoholism! This book documents one of the most heart rending accounts of alcohol addiction that I could ever imagine. Your tears may stain these pages, but Terry is continuing to help others, like me as she did in life through the courages words of her father.

          4 out of 5 stars A Father's Tragedy.......2006-03-23

This book was an incredible read. I was riveted from page one. Terry McGovern's death was such a senseless one. It serves to remind me that not all alcoholic deaths are due to cirrhosis(sp?) Alcohol can claim lives in the strangest of ways. Terry McGovern stumbled out of a bar and fell into a bank of snow, freezing to death. I still am shaken up when I think of this.

George McGovern is a great writer but I gave the book 4 stars because his belief that he could have somehow prevented his daughter's death is unfathomable to me. I can't imagine what it must be like to lose a child, it must be the most painful thing in the world. This book feels like a catharsis for his grief and he expresses a lot of irrational thinking in his dealing with it. I don't think there's anything he could have done differently to prevent Terry's death and prolong her life. I'm sure it's little consolation to her parents but Terry is at peace now. I pray the family has come to grips with this tragedy in some way in the 10 years since Terry's passing.

5 out of 5 stars A harrowing and heartrending tale of alcoholism........2003-11-22

Former South Dakota senator, and one time Presidential hopeful, George McGovern relates the sad story of his daughter Terry, who's alcoholism finally killed her when she passed out in a snowfilled alley outside of a bar one cold December night. With an objective honest and insight into both his daughter and the nature of addiction, McGovern tells how him middle daughter grew up and became mired in an inescapable quicksand of addiction. Having recently lost my wife to the ravages of this disease (ironically this book was one of hers and one she quite enjoyed reading) I can relate to McGovern's feelings of anger, frustration, and helpless regret over how the disease warped both his daughter's spirit and mind. This book is an essential for anyone who has ever had to battle, or has a loved who battles, this wretched, life eating disease. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT read!.......2001-02-16

I found 'Terry' an interesting, disturbing, educational read. My ex-husband is an alcoholic, and parts of this book were like reading about him - most reassuring to know I was not the only one to experience such traumas. I think this book is well worth reading for anyone with alcoholism in their family.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......1999-08-02

This book was so filled with good advice and valuable insights, I'd recommend it to anyone, whether they're having problems with their dog's behavior or not. Dr. Vine has been a veterinarian for decades and it shows. His love, respect, and understanding of dogs is evident; but his understanding of people is even more extraordinary. Be prepared to do some soul-searching, because he pulls no punches when it comes to who needs training, the dogs or us humans. I laughed a great deal while reading this book, not only because of Dr. Vine's humor but how well it's illustrated. (The illustrations alone are priceless.) Also, it's full of first-hand accounts with his patients which I found particularly helpful. If you want a read to enlighten while it entertains, this is the book for you. I applied his advice to my own dog (and to myself) with astonishing results. This is a book that should be read and reread if you care about your pet.

            Book Description

Consumers are no longer satisfied with the industrial types of soap available at the grocery store. They want specialty soaps with just the right scent, emollients, and eye-appeal. They want to pamper themselves and their loved ones with personal soaps made to suit their own tastes and preferences. Now they can get that perfect custom-made soap by making it themselves.

Drawing on years of experimentation and fine-tuning, author and chemist Dr. Robert McDaniel has developed simple instructions and recipes for making a wide variety of cold process soaps as well as melt and pour and rebatched soaps for the beginner. McDaniel instructs on how to work with fragrances, skin treatments, colors, and shapes, and discusses the aromatherapy benefits associated with many essential oils.

-25 recipes for cold process soapmaking.
            -Easy to follow step-by-step instructions.
-Time-saving melt and pour and rebatch techniques.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Expert advice with good mix of recipes.......2006-08-08

Dr. McDaniel's book is a great reference for those who are seasoned soapers as well as beginners looking for an introduction. One of the reasons this book is superior to others is the fact that the photos are instructional as opposed to decorative. For example, on page 57, he has wonderful photos demonstrating what trace looks like and how it behaves. I LOVED that because trace was the most elusive thing for me. People described it till they were blue in the face and I still didn't get it. It wasn't till I saw the photo that the "Aha!" moment came.

The recipes that he features are a mixed bag. There are the simple ones for beginners, cheap ones for us misers, luxurious ones for the fancy folks, facial soaps, shampoos, milk soaps, and even pet shampoos! Also included is a SAP table complete with KOH values and INS values, directions on how to use it, how to calculate water for your own recipes. It also includes directions on how to rebatch soap and of course, the obligatory melt-and-pours. What I found fascinating was the directions on how to make your own potash and how to make your own essential oils. This guy really goes over how to make everything. For those of us interested in learning about the soapmaking process from scratch, this book is indispensible!

On top of all the good information, you really feel like the author has a deep understanding of the subject. The only thing I would change, if I could, is I would ask Dr. McDaniel to also include information on hot process soap making. He covered everything else, I wondered why he didn't at least provide a cursory explaination of the process.

All in all, if you can only get ONE book on soapmaking, this is it.(Though how could you possibly just get one? Who has that much will power?)

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book to Start With.......2005-11-08

Overall, as a beginner, I enjoyed this book and appreciated a lot of his explanations and directions. I found his explanation of the math/calculation portion a little confusing, however. His step by step soap making was nice. I wish he would have explained different methods of coloring soap a little more. I am interested in making herbal soaps as natural as possible, and this book has helped me to get a basic idea. He goes over melt and pour in a brief overview, and I was glad he didn't spend too much time on it. He teaches the cold process method. I plan to find books that teach hot process next. This book is recommended for beginners.

            5 out of 5 stars A very interesting book.......2004-07-02

I am a veteran soapmaker and really enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars INS values mesh science and soap........2004-05-14

I had to have a friend who is very good with math teach me how to figure INS values. (Math major I am not.) If you like math and are very scientific about soap you'll like them. I am sure INS values would gaurd you from making a bad batch, but it boggled me a bit.
I am a hot process soaper and this book was not helpful for perfecting hot process. The recipes are well balanced and you won't go wrong there, but I am going to buy the soapmaker's companion next. (I have Milk-Based soaps also.)

I just don't think any one book will give you it all. Soap making methods are very personal and I suggest you buy several books and take what you like from them and leave the rest.
Soap making is after all very personal and Dr. Bob has given a good take on his personal niche with soap. With some exploration each soaper can find theirs.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best.......2003-11-02

I have an estensive collection of books on soapmaking, but this is still the one I turn to when I have a problem or when I am looking for a new idea. I have taught classes in soapmaking and recommend this book to all taking the classes.
It is great for beginners but still has enough technical information for those expanding into their own business.
Great real-world photos, too--not some professional photographer's idea of what soap should look like.

5 out of 5 stars A clear and elegant presentation........2005-12-04

If you are only going to invest in one book -- this should be the one! In addition to instructions to create classic and creative candles, there are great explanations of wax types, molds, safety precautions, and more. All this information is presented with words of encouragement and enhanced with well-photographed examples.

2 out of 5 stars Boring, and not much help to beginners.......2003-02-24

De. Bob should stick to soap. His candle making book is not for a beginner who just wants to know the basics in simple terms and get started. Although I am sure some of the information will be helpful to the more advanced, it was not what I was looking for to get started.

5 out of 5 stars Essentially Most Useful.......2002-10-30

I was first struck by the photo content. It seems that procedures to make every common type of candle (and several uncommon ones as well) are fully illustrated with lots of photos that make reproducing the results extremely easy to follow. Not only that but the authors helped to dispell my bewildernment over the many, many ingredients available on the market which are useful (or not) for producing special effects. For instance, the suggestion to forget gloss ingredients and use higher temperatures in making the candle is simple and highly practical.
I own or have looked through almost every candle book on the market, and I think this one is clearly the best resource book available. I just wish it were longer.
Finally, to my surprise, I discovered that this is the only book that is recommended by my primary ingredient supplier. They seem to agree that it is the most factual and accurate book on the market suitable for those getting started as well as for those needing more info as they scale up.

            5 out of 5 stars Best value!.......2002-01-11

Ingredient selection for candles can be baffling, but Dr. Bob covers the gamut and tells which work or when there is a better way to do things. Lots of projects with easily available equipment as well as how to use fancy molds, or even make your own molds! Over 250 beautiful color pictures make procedures and results easy to understand. The section on how much wax is needed for a particular mold is invaluable, and I personally love the section on wax characteristics.
The FAQ is quite complete and look for tips on the best ways to make or avoid mottled candles, glossy candles, and which special ingredients can be replaced by the right technique. This is a valuable book for scout leaders, first timers, and experienced candlemakers alike. But then, what would you expect from the authors of Essentially Soap.

5 out of 5 stars Essentailly Candles kindles enthusiasm.......2002-01-07

"To waken interest and kindle enthusiasm is the sure way to teach easily and successfully. " Tryon Edwards (1809-1894)
This quote,(pun intended), describes Essentailly Candles to a "T". Starting with the history of candles, then proceeding to choosing the correct wax, wick and additives, then to the projects and great photos, Bob and Kate McDaniel have done an excellent job of teaching basic and advance skill in candlemaking. The book is easily read, the projects are illustrated with great photos and it is packed full of information useful to either the novice or more experienced candlemaker. I found the infomation on color, blending techniques, wax quantites for molds and differences and uses of various waxes to be most informative and helpful. I have made candles for over 20 years and still learned many new and useful things from this book. There are many books with pretty pictures and directions for projects. Essentially Candles not only gives the projects and the step-by-step directions but also offers the foundation information necessary to explore other possibilities. A must have for anyone wishing to know the why of candlemaking.

Young women are the unhappy victims of their mothers' generation's feminism, says Danielle Crittenden in What Our Mothers Didn't Tell Us. Though they usually don't realize it, feminism has "seeped into their minds like intravenous saline into the arm of an unconscious patient." Crittenden says that feminism doesn't provide answers for the questions that distress young women, such as, "Is work really more important and fulfilling than raising my children?" and "Why does my boyfriend not want to get married as much as I do?" The modern dilemma, she says, is that the success of feminism has cut women off from those aspects of life that are distinctly female desires, such as being a wife and raising children. Crittenden wants us to take a step back from sexual freedom (which she says ends up harming the woman, who gets used and dumped), career (only a tiny minority have stimulating, gratifying jobs), and zealous personal autonomy (often an indication of being too fearful and weak to take on responsibilities), in favor of commitment, marriage, and child rearing. She argues that feminist fervor has failed modern women, and gives her suggestions for how women can recapture meaning, fulfillment, and happiness. --Joan Price

              Book Description

Talk to women under forty today, and you will hear that in spite of the fact that they have achieved goals previous generations of women could only dream of, they nonetheless feel more confused and insecure than ever. What has gone wrong? What can be done to set it right?

These are the questions Danielle Crittenden answers in What Our Mothers Didn't Tell Us. She examines the foremost issues in women's lives -- sex, marriage, motherhood, work, aging, and politics -- and argues that a generation of women has been misled: taught to blame men and pursue independence at all costs. Happiness is obtainable, Crittenden says, but only if women will free their minds from outdated feminist attitudes.

By drawing on her own experience and a decade of research and analysis of modern female life, Crittenden passionately and engagingly tackles the myths that keep women from realizing the happiness they deserve. And she introduces a new way of thinking about society's problems that may, at long last, help women achieve the lives they desire.

1 out of 5 stars The stereotypical and strictly biological dead-end fate of being a woman.......2007-08-27

An unsophisticated analysis of women as simple, one-dimensional creatures who lack complexities or uniqueness entirely. In fact, we shall think of ourselves and our united fate in terms of biology alone.

What Our Grandmothers Didn't Tell Us: Why Happiness Eluded the 1950s Woman

Ms. Crittenden (or, I assume Mrs.) makes the assumption that because therapy, antidepressants, and divorce were not as acceptable to 1950s society, and thereby not utilized at any alarming rate, women were fulfilled being married mothers. I pity any woman or man who feels that her or his own lifestyle and beliefs are OSFA. That is the thought process of a child; egocentric and underdeveloped.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful look at the social wreckage left in the wake of Feminism.......2007-08-21

Danielle Crittenden has written a good analysis of why Feminism's promise of happiness for women has turned out to be a sour one. Some points need raising though. Do we really expect men, who've been brought up on equality and the idea of both partners contributing to change their lifestyles willy-nilly just to accommodate those who've realised they made a mistake? The numbers of stereotypical you-stay-at-home-with-the-kids-while-I-work men has fallen dramatically in the First World as men realise the extra burden this places on their lives. We men will forever be grateful to Feminism for helping to distribute the burden more equally on the shoulders of men and women, even if they've only redistributed the best jobs, while leaving all the worst jobs still on men's shoulders. I can't see any large-scale return by men to the way things were. Now that American women with the same education and experience who work the same number of hours are earning more than men [ASIN:0814472109 Why Men Earn More: The Startling Truth Behind the Pay Gap -- and What Women Can Do About It (by Warren Farrell)], men would be morally justified in Mrs Crittenden's world to demand increases in salary over women's to cover the extra costs which the career women who are their job competitors wouldn't have unless they were paying for their children AND husband to stay at home. Ultimately, I'm sure all reviewers here want to live in a world where men and women can both have a choice as to whether to stay at home or work, but once again the chances of true equality seem remote. How many women do you know who would be happy to work full-time permanently supporting a husband and kids at home until they've finished college or left school? Yet until that day arrives, we can't come close to speaking of equality.

3 out of 5 stars I literally took her advice ..........2007-07-25

I read this book as an undergrad and was very impressed. I thought Crittenden's ideas made terrific sense and I literally applied them to my own life, having been in the fortunate position of knowing I would marry my university boyfriend. At 23 I gave birth to our son, and at 26 our daughter. (I am 5 years out of college and am now 27.) Young parenting had been very gratifying for us both and we do not miss the party scene one bit. Life has meaning and direction. Career wise, and hence money wise, however, life is more complicated. For example, my husband is currently pursuing his MBA and I needed to become the family provider this past year. Interviewing was a nightmare. People in HR were shocked to hear that I had focused the last 5 years on raising children, despite my also having worked in between the two pregnancies, and were similarly uncomfortable with placing someone with my age and level of education in a close-to-entry-level position. Also, in addition to money having been tight, socializing has also been far from a picnic. Couples even close to our age with children (especially in Manhattan) are zero to none. So, a caution for the wise: Crittenden's excellent suggestions for feminine self fulfillment work in an ideal world that was never subject to feminism's widespread and hyper-radical influences. Indeed, that entire idea about having children first and then dedicating more time to an uninterrupted career as the children simultaneously crave more independence .... I'll have to get back to you in five more years and let you know...

4 out of 5 stars A clear statement of what I've known all along ..........2006-10-10

An all-around excellent book and a breath of fresh air in the 'mommy wars'. Crittenden has managed to put into clear words what I've always felt, experienced and understood as a 40-something, liberal, educated woman but had trouble articulating: 1)That women CAN have everything -- career, marriage, family life -- just not all at the same time; 2) that a sexual double-standard still exists despite a culture awash in sexual exhibitionism, and this toxic combination hurts everyone; 3) That men are not the enemy; and 4) raising your children is important and valuable work and many women actually WANT to stay home with their children and this should not be considered insane, unreasonable, or treasonous.

IMHO this is truly not an anti-feminist book, it's a common-sense one that takes a hard look at physical, mental, and social realities that exist in today's world. Obviously, my world view and that of the author coincide, but I'd recommend this to any American woman -- especially one with daughters -- and hope she'd keep an open mind.

5 out of 5 stars For some women, this book is very valuable.......2006-09-25

I understand there are people who do not like this book. However, there are also many women who would have benefitted from reading something like this a long time ago. I personally know many women who are single in their 30s and it is primarily due to the fact that they were taught at a young age that all they need is themselves and any dependency on men is weak and/or pathetic. I hear "He wants to get married, but marriage is such a bad deal for women". These women pretty much all want children and the guys they date are great. So, what's the problem? Many of us grew up with pressure to NOT become a wife/mother. Many of us had mothers who joked (negatively) about "housewives." I should also add for this review that my experience is mostly with middle-upper-middle class, college educated, liberal people.

This author suggests that women think earlier about marriage/having children and some think her advice is "unrealistic." It's not. I did it, am 31, and totally done with the baby thing. My oldest is already in elem. school. For most college degrees, you can complete college by age 22. That is plenty early to have a family young and have a degree waiting for when you want/need to use it. You do need to live a relatively simple life tho. You aren't going to be able to afford the top of the line car, house and vacations if you follow her advice. There are trade offs, but it is certainly not "unrealistic" advice.

As a 30 something, I also see men of my generation with very different expectations than our father's had. Our fathers grew up expecting that they would have to support familes. In my generation, men grew up expecting women would work. So, when women now have babies and decide they really want to be home after all, the men are blindsided. Some refuse to support their families. The women are surprised they want to stay home too! And maybe the women really can't because they are used to a lifestyle they can't afford on one income. I think we shock ourselves because what we always thought we wanted sometimes changes after we become parents. Sometimes those more traditional roles start looking more appealing. But, for some reason we feel we are doing something "bad" by following traditional gender roles.

The bottom line is that we need to educate our daughters realistically about the choices we have to make when we are young. What type of people we want to marry/date. People have to think about what they really want out of life and look for a partner who shares those values. However, some women in the last 30 years have been told to push out feelings of family/marriage as it is "pathetic" or "old fashioned." Men have also learned this and think that this is how women think. If they hold "old fashioned" ideas of marriage/family, they are great fodder for mockery by their female peers. They walk on eggshells making sure they don't do anything "offensive" to a woman's independence. Ask questions before you get married about family/children/expectations. Trust your gut. If you really want to be a wife/mother more than anything else..be sure you look for a guy who supports that and has similar values. They are getting harder to find. Not impossible, but make sure you discuss it before getting too attached. You may find the guy you are dating has no plans for you to be home more than 6 weeks after any future babies are born.

                Book Description

Novelist Ross Feld remembers his friend, the acclaimed artist Philip Guston, in a beautiful blend of memoir, biography and art criticism interspersed with extracts from Guston's vibrant letters.

Painters have needed writers from the time of Vasari. By words visual imagery is given a second vividness, and writers recast it into a descriptiveness that's infinitely portable. The figurative painter Philip Guston found such an interpreter of his art in his friend, novelist Ross Feld. Guston in Time is Feld's final appreciation of Guston and his work. Both a complex study of one of the twentieth century's greatest artists and a testament to a wonderful friendship, it is ultimately a tribute to a great character. Philip Guston lives and breathes in this book. The excerpts from his letters are brash and brilliant, and Feld's fantastic images of the man are a mosaic of his grandiosity of spirit. As Feld writes, "he was like a Zero Mostel, a supernova of personality," and here Feld has created an unforgettable portrait of a man and his art, crafted with love and genius.

Philip Guston's life was, in many ways, a chronicle of twentieth century American painting. He was a muralist with the Federal Art Project in the 1930s, an abstract expressionist in the fifties and sixties, and in the last and most important decade of his life, Guston's work changed yet again. His late, figurative work--crude, bold and beautifully painted--enraged the art establishment, but helped embolden a younger generation of artists to risk a new style of painting that became known as Neo-Expressionism. He died in 1980.

Figurative painter Guston's life was vibrant; he was a muralist, then an abstract expressionist, and finally a figurative artists. Here friend and novelist Feld, Guston's friend, interprets his works and his friendship with Guston, adding many personal insights and embellishments from the friendship which will lead artists to a fuller appreciation of his life.
