Book Description
Nahem Yousaf explores the novels of Alex La Guma to reveal their contrasts, their multifaceted dialogues with apartheid, and what they inform us about the oppressive nature of the apartheid system that strove to deny non-whites their humanity. All of La Guma's fiction is overtly political in that he sought to reclaim a place and subjectivity for blacks through his creative writing. All of his writings deal with the violence of apartheid and regard violence as an inevitable aspect of anti-apartheid struggles. Conceiving the role of the writer in the same terms as that of the revolutionary freedom fighter, La Guma's writings reflect the realizations of the African National Congress leadership that only through violent resistance against apartheid would the oppressed find liberation. Although some literary critics regard La Guma's fiction as one dimensional and flat, Yousaf argues that La Guma's characters reveal fully the complexities and contradictions of life under apartheid. Same as DE1
Customer Reviews:
at last.......2001-10-17
I have followed Alex la Guma's fiction and this is the best critical work I have read on the author. Others tend to be too simplistic -- simply biographical or they fall into essentialist terminology. I have read them but been disappointed by them because La Guma, a political writer, a member of the ANC and a writer whose work was banned under apartheid, deserved so much more detailed consideration. It isn't enough to tell us that he wrote against apartheid but how he did so so effectively. Yousaf has written a thorough and thoughtful book. Reading it helped me to look again at novels I know and see new things and read them through new ideas. The book also helped me to see that reading people like Frantz Fanon or Mikhail Bakhtin, critics I have found difficult, can actually help you to read novels in thought-provoking ways. The bibliography is really useful too. Yousaf uses the theorists, but to effect and never lets them get in the way of the novels themselves.
This is a great introduction to La Guma for new readers and for readers like myself, it augments what we already know and advances our thinking on a neglected South African writer.
I cannot understand why Heinemann who publish La Guma's fiction should have decided to price this book so high. From experience, I would say that it would work well for students of African Literature, especially South African Studies. But it would need to be in a cheaper format, like the fiction.

Book Description
Popular quilting expert Ricky Tims presents an imaginative new piecing technique that quilters will adore! Convergence quilts feature two or more fabrics cut into strips, sewn together, then cut and pieced again. They may look complex but are fun and easy to make. Four projects walk you through the process, and Tims shows how to add appliqué, beadwork, and other decorative touches to achieve an infinite number of looks from one ingenious technique!

Ricky Tim's Convergence Quilts.......2007-09-11
One look inside and I just couldn't wait to make won of these. Easier than they look. They can be so very pretty.
An easy technique that makes everyone say WOW!.......2007-08-25
Some quilting books show gorgeous quilts that you know you'll never make. The techniques are complex and time consuming, or the writing fails to give you confidence that you understand the steps involved. Perhaps it'd make sense if someone showed you just once... but the instructions are confusing.
Ricky Tims avoids these pitfalls, with a book that is *incredibly* well written -- and yields brilliant results.
Just how easy is this? I made my first convergence quilt top in two or three hours, while I was also watching a baseball game, using 4 fat quarters that I already had on hand. And I'm no quilting wiz.
Since then, I've made two additional convergence quilts, and I'm sure to make several more (the holidays are coming, after all). As a quilting instructor pointed out, these are like potato chips, in that you can't stop at one. I've loved every quilt I've made, and so has everyone who has seen these quilts.
Do note that the basic quilt is very small -- perfect for a wall quilt but not much more. I think you could create several of these as blocks to turn into a bed quilt, but you'd be on your own to do so. The quilt is so easy to make and I like the results so much that I am tempted to give it a try.
This would be a great book for someone who is fairly new to quilting. I wouldn't suggest it as your very first book (you should do at least a few small traditional projects first), but the forgiving nature of the techique is sure to give you a quilt to be proud of. It's all straight lines, and despite the appearance of the quilt it has no complex piecing. What fun! Highly recommended.
Convergence Quilting.......2007-06-07
This book is a fantastic starting point to creating your own convergence quilt. The step-by-step instructions are very clear and the examples so varied and intriguing that you are inspired to step outside your comfort zone and create something totally unique and different. If you're ready to try a new and exciting technique, this book is for you!
Simple but spectacular.......2007-04-05
What a fun concept this technique is for both beginning and experienced quilters. It is basic strip piecing and takes advantage of some of the fabulous batiks and hand-dyed fabrics available today. Most of my quilting friends who've used this book took their basic Convergence pieced quilt top and embellished/appliqued them to the nth degree. It is a contemporary look to say the least.
This Book is FUN!!.......2007-03-06
Once again I will sing the praises of Ricky Tims and his "think outside of the box" tips & techniques. He understands we are not all degreed artists, and some us are a bit more creatively challenged than others. He, once again, shows some simple, yet at times a bit daring, techniques that will yield results to impress even the best artists. (I know because I was able to WOW a couple of pros with Masters Degrees in Graphic Art.) Anyone can do this, even children. You just need to be able to bring yourself to sew it together then cut it apart, a phobia you will quickly get over. Ricky actually shows you how to "break the rules" and live with yourself for doing so, because the results are amazing & totally unique every time! These techniques work with any fabric or color choice. (I intentionally put together 3 fabrics that normally would not work with each other- purple, orange, and green- just to see, and had fantastic results!) You can't go wrong, no matter what choices you make, and best of all, you don't waste fabric! It takes only a little to "test" your idea, and even that becomes a work of art all on its own. I HIGHLY recommend this book... It is FUN!!!!!

Book Description
Children need love, trust, affection--and discipline. From one generation to the next, the challenge of helping children into responsible adults doesn't change. Dr. Dobson's classic Dare to Discipline, a practical, reassuring guide for caring parents, has sold over 2 million copies since its release in 1970. What gives a book that kind of staying power? The ability to meet a real, felt need in the marketplace. Today, a whole new generation of parents is turning to Dr. Dobson's wise counsel. Some things never change.
Tyndale House Publishers and Dr. Dobson are proud to present The New Dare to Discipline, completely updated to meet family needs in the 90's.
Customer Reviews:
Wish I didn't even have to give it one star........2007-10-12
If you buy into his demented logic, then by all means this is the book for you.
However I would recommend any parenting book over this garbage. Try something from the Dr. Sears selection.
The New Dare to Discpline.......2007-09-19
This book tells it well, that if you love your children, I mean really love your children, you will discipline them. By disciplining them, it takes more than making them feel good, it teaches them to take control of their wills, to shape their lives, to understand what is true and good. Sometimes that takes a spanking when they are too defiant. Anyone who has raised children, knows this to be true. Do well for your child by discipliing your child.
Power trip.......2007-08-23
If you are on a power trip over your children, this is the book for you. Adults who would use this book as a guide for child rearing are creating the next generation of child abusers. There are dozens of great books on the market for all aspects of child rearing. Don't let this charlatan who thinks he has a direct line to God, tell you anything. He understands children about like Attila the Hun understood human nature.
I doubt his ability to raise a dog, much less children.......2007-08-15
The episode describing a small dog and a grown man having a tantrum (the author)makes me wonder about whether Dobsdon should be allowed to raise dogs, much less children. When a small dog refuses to go into his kennel, it is a simple matter to pick it up and place it in the kennel. Yet this man who beat a dog for several minutes and is seemingly proud of it, dispenses advice on child rearing.
I also find it interesting that he calls himself a Christian, but doesn't mention Jesus in this book.
I'd rate it zero stars if possible.......2007-08-15
Dobson, himself an acknowledged victim of child abuse, perpetuates the problem by dressing it up in religion. Without qualifications in pediatrics, child psychology, social work or even theology, he twists and tortures the Bible to justify what can only be described as a severe psychological illness of his own.
The techniques he advocates - prolonged spanking, and even shaking - are dangerous, and are documented causes of both severe injury and death.
Please, please, do not buy this book, and do not recommend it to your friends. It destroys children.

Joseph Beuys is a mythical figure in the art world; however, this books shows the real intetions of his art work and social sculpture. An excellent resource, a must read for anyone interested in challenging the fabric of society.

"Our friends suffer from our expectations".......2004-12-14
My subject line quotes Cronin, and serves as a summary of his devastating portrayal of the sadness beneath the frolicking attributed and appropriated by Brendan Behan for much of this narrative. Reading this in tandem with John Ryan's "Remembering How We Stood," it's instructive to find how much the two memoirs of bohemian, post-war Dublin overlap yet each keeps its own particular focus separate even as they cover so many similar events: Behan's self-promotion, Kavanagh's libel litigation, and Flann O'Brien's insular inspiration. The Scots painters "The Roberts" receive greater detail here than in Ryan, as he knows them in London and follows their troubled relationship further. Likewise, Cronin provides a pre-fame Behan in all his exasperating energy as the two bum about France. Ryan keeps his attention on the Dublin setting from which he witnessed the literati's coming and going; Cronin brings in the Continent and Britain to widen the perspective, often offering greater detail if no less a careful analysis than Ryan. As a fellow writer, Cronin--unlike the publican/editor of Envoy Ryan--was seen by Kavanagh especially as competition, and this intensity adds dynamism to Cronin's descriptions of his conniving compatriots.
Certainly there is humor, but more profoundly, melancholy. Drink, sexual repression and expression, and the limitations of what Ireland could offer talented writers in this repressed era makes for cautionary tales about how short-lived fame can be and how crippling it can be for those whose lives outlast their genius. Cronin's briefer, later encounters with his subjects after they have fallen from the heights gain poignancy even as he refuses to sentimentalise his (former) friends, since they too often all too easily refuse to take blame for their own fate.
When I read about Julian Mclaren-Ross, I figured this minor figure was popular in the Edwardian period; when Cronin reveals that this once-recognised author was then--deep in decline--only in his forties, it only underscored the brevity of renown and the long slide afterwards so many must endure from the creative ranks. Cronin writes precisely, without cliche, self-pity, or cruelty. Along with Ryan, Cronin's non-autobiographical (!) memoir marks a celebration and an epitaph for 1945-55, more or less, among a coterie who sabotaged their own potential--even as they tried to achieve more than their society dared allow for them.
(Cronin's fictionalisation, Life of Riley, on this period is also worth reading, as are his incisive biographies of Flann O'Brien and--a figure curiously absent from Dead as Doornails even in an aside--Samuel Beckett.)
Writers and Their Milieu Recalled Well.......2000-09-03
Cronin gives the reader an enjoyable, sometimes amusing, portrayal of three of of Ireland's greatest modern writers: Brendan Behan, Patrick Kavanagh and Flann O'Brien. His descriptions of pre-fame Brendan Behan are excellent. They show the young and adventurous Behan as he was before fame, drink, and self-parody overtook him. It was somewhat disappointing that Flann O'Brien, author of skilled and imaginative works (At-Swim-Two-Birds, The Third Policeman) was himself an alcoholic with, nonetheless, a bourgeois, sometimes puritanical personality. All these writers (and others everywhere)tended to be petty, egoistic, and hyper-critical, especially about their contemporaries' work. But this does not make them uninteresting, and one should always separate art from artist.
