Book Description
The most up-to-date and detailed source of hard facts for independent travelers and hikers on getting to and around this little-explored but very welcoming ex-Soviet state. Thorough coverage of the increasingly cosmopolitan capital, Tbilisi, and provincial towns are provided.
Book Description
Harry Truman had been vice president for less than a year when he inherited the White House in 1945. With little preparation, he masterfully guided the nation through the last days of World War II, the Marshall Plan, and the war in Korea. The humble, plainspoken man known for the adage The buck stops here took on the challenges the way he knew besthead on.
Bestselling author Alan Axelrod offers a fascinating look at the man who made some of the most difficult decisions of the last century, through more than 150 lessons from Truman's life and career. Divided among twelve chapters such as Bringing People Together, The Right Thing, Hell: Giving and Getting, and Facts of the Matter, these concise principles can be used by modern-day managers in their day-to-day quest for business success. Inspirational and practical, When the Buck Stops with You is sure to join Axelrod's other works as a must-have volume on leadership.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read!.......2004-08-06
Author Alan Axelrod's 156 concise lessons on leadership from the life and writings of Harry S. Truman are vivid but, alas, often repetitive. The bigger paradox of this book is that many of the virtues it espouses - diligence, balance, thoroughness, patience and a thirst for learning - are thwarted by its very structure. Truman, a voracious reader, would likely have found these one or two page chapters frustratingly short. Any leader really seeking to model himself or herself on Truman should use this as an appetizer and move immediately onward to a meaty full-length biography or memoir. With that in mind, we recommend this book to executives and political leaders who haven't yet met Truman - or to those who only want a brief visit, a leadership pep talk and a few pithy quotes.
Lessons on Doing Your Damndest.......2004-03-02
Those who have read Patton on Leadership and/or Elizabeth I, CEO are already aware of Axelrod's unique talent for rigorously examining an abundance of historical and (especially) biographical information to derive especially important lessons in leadership. In this volume, his subject is Harry S Truman. (How much I would enjoy being included during a "fantasy dinner" with Patton, Elizabeth I, and Truman!) Within a dozen chapters, Axelrod identifies and then briefly but insightfully discusses 156 "lessons" to be learned from the life and career of the 33rd President of the United States. Axelrod also provides a "Truman Timeline" and "The Sources of Truman on Leadership" (suggested readings) in an Appendix.
Most experts on the American Presidency rank Truman among the greatest, a fact which would have astonished those old enough to remember when Franklin Delano Roosevelt died and Truman was sworn in as his successor. There was little in the background of "The Man from Missouri" to suggest that he was equal to the task during one of the most dangerous periods of his nation's history. World War Two was still in progress, what became the Cold War was developing, West Berlin would soon be isolated by the U.S.S.R.'s blockade, the Korean War lay ahead, and the quite legitimate threat of thermonuclear weapons created an unprecedented sense of menace throughout the civilized world. Truman did indeed rise to the task and as Axelrod correctly indicates in this volume, there are many important lessons to be learned from his leadership from 1945 until 1952.
Timeless Lessons From The Thirty-Third President.......2004-02-09
When Harry S. Truman left the presidency in January 1953, his approval rating stood at an historic low. But his reputation has been on a steady rise ever since. His blunt, plainspoken honesty has touched a responsive chord among Americans who feel their current leaders, whatever the party, offer them little but lies and double-talk.
Therefore, Truman seems a natural choice for the latest manual on leadership from Alan Axelrod. The author draws extensively from Truman's own public statements and private diaries to extract a series of 156 lessons on leadership, divided into a series of chapters with themes like "Hell: Giving and Getting" and "Do The Right Thing."Although primarily aimed at the business person, these lessons have value for anyone in a leadership role, including, of course, the poltical realm.
Truman's decisiveness, his high moral standards, his unwillingness to accept anything less than the best from himself or his colleagues all shine through in this work. A timeline helps place Truman's life in context, and the bibliography offers a number of potential sources for anyone with an intertest in further exploring the life and philosophy of our thirty-third president.--William C. Hall
Book Description
Rita Smith and Joe Lee grew up alongside their infamous cousins, the Krays. Private and loyal to their family, they have never before spoken out in public. But now, for the first time they share their thoughts and memories with Peter Gerrard, and the result is an intriguingly intimate portrait of the Kray family. Rita and Joe not only offer a wealth of previously unpublished stories and anecdotes about the twins, describe the personal relationships both within and outside the family, and offer a fascinating insight into what went on behind closed doors, they also provide a family photograph album of never-before published photographs. Joe and Rita believe that the record should finally be set straight. Inside the Kray Family does just that, providing an extraordinary insight into one of Britan's most infamous families.

The 'Wiseguy" of true British Crime ........2000-08-10
The feel of the violent world of the Kray's in 50's and 60's London is terrifying. Definitely a pair that would scrae me from the Pub in an instant. A must for true crime/mobster fiction reader (get it on Amazon UK).
I read a later re-print and my only quibble was the author's repeated slagging of 'The Kray's' movie. Guess he was upset his book was not used as a basis.
Excellent!.......2000-04-10
Very surprised that this is out of print. A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining read. There could only be one pair of Kray twins and for my money only one decent book on them! My only gripe: there could've been more pics. If you're able to get a copy of this highly detailed book - do so.

Married to Ron, she was granted unique access into the shadowy world they inhabited, and was entrusted with some of the darkest secrets they possessed—secrets that could never be revealed until they were both dead. Now with the help of thoughts and anecdotes from the people who knew the twins best, Kate has documented once and for all the life of the world's most famous gangsters, and filled in the gaps with the facts that could not be revealed until now. Gangsters, actors, East End faces—everyone who is anyone in the Firm is here, thanks to Kate's unique access and influence. I ordered this book on the 13th of March, it is now the 7th of May and I have yet to receive this book, therefore, I am not impresed at all.
Whilst I have selected one star as a rating, for obvious reasons I would not give it any stars.

This book is easy to read, and with great illustrations. Lots of the information can be used in many other ways. The information on Appliqued shadows including using sheers and discharging and painting is very useful and very clearly illustrated. A wonderful book to help you in trying experimental techniques in your quilting.
A Wonderful Book.......2006-03-17
I have already made a project from this book. I saw the author on TV and ordered the book right after. It does not disappoint and my quilt is gorgeous.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Very little to it, you could do this yourself.......2006-07-19
I purchased 2 organizers, this one and the 40+ weeks. What a difference. This organizer has 2 main tabs for the two types of pages, that's it. I could make these pages myself on my PC and stick them in a binder for free.
Great book, needs to be longer.......2006-04-16
This is a fantastic record keeping journal. It makes all of the record keeping so easy! The only thing that i feel is wrong with it is that there are not enough daily pages so you have to end up buying a new journal after about a month.
A Sanity Saver.......2006-04-03
Like most first time moms, I was nervous about remembering everything, this book took the pressure off. In the fog of sleeplesness, it reminded me what my baby had eaten last, when she had medication, etc. An added bonus was that I used to to write down all of those "firsts" and I can actually fill in her baby book, a feat that many moms never get to!
This book now goes in with me to every baby shower I attend!

A very highly recommended, comprehensive, core series........2000-07-05
The "Encyclopedia Of Archaeology" series is being published by ABC-CLIO in five volumes under the meticulous editorship of Tim Murray, professor of archaeology at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. The first two volumes survey "The Great Archaeologists" and draw upon hundreds of scholars from all parts of the world to provide readers with accurate and up-to-date information. These first two volumes present 58 remarkable and informative biographies of the world's best-known archaeologists who have developed the discipline from its earliest beginnings to the present day. Essays conclude with bibliographies of primary sources for those wanting to read about the archaeologists' discoveries in their own words, as well as secondary sources to see what critics and admirers had to say about them and their activities. Encyclopedia Of Archaeology: The Great Archaeologists (Vols. 1 & 2) are enhanced with an historical introduction to archeological biography, a glossary of terms, a full subject index, and more than a hundred dramatic illustrations. Volumes 3, 4 and 5 ("History and Discoveries") is set for publication in about six months. The "Encyclopedia Of Archaeology" series is a very highly recommended, definitive, comprehensive, essential, core acquisition for professional, academic, and public library collections.

Book Description
'About Norreys himself too little is known for this to be a conventional biography, a fact freely confessed by the author. However, there is enough information to depict Norreys as a hard-drinking, bad-tempered, hyper-sensitive, paranoid, prickly, awkward, quarrelsome, yet brave professional soldier who fought in the majority of Elizabeth's land operations: the Netherlands, Ireland, Brittany, Portugal and the Armada Campaign in 1588. . . Dr Nolan has deepened our understanding of how the Elizabethan 'army' functioned whilst on campaign.' - English Historical Review April 1999
'This book has begun the revision and rehabilitation of the Elizabethan military machine, although this is a military biography rather than a military history. What is also pleasing that it is such a readable and, on the whole, balanced account. This is a most enjoyable read that I would heartily recommend.' - The Pike and Shot Society Journal, Vol. XXIV/II
'Nolan has produced a highly readable military biography of the best land commander that England produced during an age when the national stage was crowded with larger than life figures.' - Society for Army Historical Research, Spring 2000
'Nolan comes into his own when dealing with both the economic and technical infrastructure of sixteenth-century military life. . . . The book is also full of case studies that will make enlightening reading for any student of military life in the sixteenth century.' - Irish Historical Studies, Nov 2000
